  • If you are visiting Maui, driving the Road to Hana is a given must-do activity. But what about continuing on the backside of the Hana Highway to complete the Road to Hana Loop?
    Is it too dangerous? What if I get a flat tire? How much time will this take? What should I see?
    We spent a ton of time debating this instead of actually enjoying ourselves traveling, so I made a video that answered all my own burning questions about this off-the-beaten-path trail of driving the backside of Hana.
    Hope this helps your decision!

    Your math is spot on. We started the road to hana at 6am, did the full loop and probably didn't finish till close to 8pm because we made a lot of stops. It's doable in one day but you better start when the sun rises!

    do it! I did the loop two days in a row through different routes, one back to Paia through Kula Hwy and Haleakala Hwy and one back to Wailuku through Pi'ilani Hwy and Pulehu Rd. it's beautiful and so much fun!

    I just did the loop! Did it over two days. Took the front road there, stayed the night at Joe’s Place in Hana (recommend it!) and then did the back road on the way back to Wailea. We almost didn’t because it had been stormy the night before, but I’m so glad we did! It was absolutely beautiful! And the road wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I highly recommend it too!

    Both times I went to Maui, the back road was closed due to flooding :( . I STILL want to do it, though, and your video showed me that it is worth it, so I definitely will try again! Your advice is great!

    Last Friday we did the full loop from Kihei and it took us 10 hours but I wished we allowed for more time. It was dark by the time we got to the winery. The road past Hana was not as bad as I was expecting, bumpy and dusty, worth doing once. We saw lots of wild goats, cattle and horses. Not only did I check that the spare had air in it I also made sure there was a jack and lug wrench. Next time we will start out much earlier and drive to Hana and back the same way, getting a different perspective on the way back.
    We also drove the loop around the top of the island via Lahaina(an expensive tourist trap) a much more thrilling drive once past Napili. Also very scenic but at times much narrower,twistier, with very high vertical drops and no guard rails, quite scary at times!

    Love your video! Beautiful shots. I was in Hana two weeks ago and just posted my video about it. I wish I could have driven the back road but I just didn't have the right vehicle for it!

    We did the there and back trip a few years ago. Seeing this........I will loop next time! You can also loop the other side of the island and see a cool little town called Kahakalui, sorry for miss-spelling.

    I decided to do the loop on a chevy suburban and oh boi I did not plan the trip that well. I thought I had enough time but ended up driving the back portion at night. It was horrible because 1. It was pitch black and 2. didnt get to see any of the view. In all it took me 12hrs to drive the loop from Kaanapali.

    Always good to have a "spare flat tire in the beck"! I prefer that the spare is not flat. Ha ha!

      Ha! So true! I meant to say "spare tire"... you definitely don't need a spare FLAT tire. Thanks for watching! :)

    Are the roads mostly on the mountain cliffs or open land away from the cliffs? Heard the roads are quite dangerous especially if a person is scared of heights. Cant decide if taking the tour bus is best, but i get motion sickness.

    • @AMillionPeopleandPlaces
      @AMillionPeopleandPlaces  Před 6 lety

      Hi there, the roads are a mixture of mountain cliffs and also open land away from cliffs on the backside of Hana. I think you have the right idea that driving the backside would be scary if you're afraid of heights. The tour buses personally make me nervous because they are so wide and the road can get really narrow. It might be looking into though. As far as motion sickness, you might consider taking an over the counter motion sickness pill the night before (here's my "I'm not a doctor" disclaimer :) ). Always does the trick for me. Good luck!

    What rental car companies allow or not allow the road to Hana? Not sure how that would even work considering most of the people on that road are tourists without a car there.

    • @FredBTs
      @FredBTs Před 4 lety

      All rental cars are allowed to take the road to Hana, it’s the road that continues around the island where they are not supposed to go.

    • @mikekoehler9664
      @mikekoehler9664 Před 4 lety

      Pretty sure most rental companies verbally deny it and may even hold you personally liable if damage occurs while driving it.
      We ended up winning a BOGO for a guided tour beginning with the back side and I'm thrilled we didn't try to drive this. Going up/down Haleakala for sunset was enough; the tour offered plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and ourselves!

    It is true: You should plan to do this on two days. I was doing this in one day and I was driving this road in the dark, with fog and while it was raining. It is not so easy to drive this in the dark and you could get stuck when it rains. And by the way. You do not see much of the scenery ;-)
