My 03 Beetle Turbo S smells like a box crayolas too
Everyone that ever got in my car told me that. It started to annoy me, not the smell but the constant comments I would get about it.
It comes from the sound deadening layer that is applied to the floor and sub-chassis of the car to reduce sound and heat, ... I learnt this from ChrisFix

I have a 1.8T Jetta MK4 and is my first car. I love it!!!! 😍 Greetings from ARGENTINA 🇦🇷
Me too! Just got it today I have the hatchback
Hey James, the "Crayon Smell" comes from the breakdown of the interior adhesives used during manufacturing.
All cars have that. Why was this smell so distinctly crayon-like?
@@EliasTheHunter i read somewhere before that it's because of the the adhesives that german car manufacturers used the time so around early 2000's I guess leaving the cars out in really hot weather affects the adhesives . My friends mom has a Mercedes from that era and it smelled like crayons.i guess Japanese car manufacturers used different adhesives so their cars doesn't have the crayon smell.
Anthony Datuin makes sense. Thanks for the reply!
After I purchased my GLI I researched it a little and found numerous things pointing to an anti rust underbody coating. Who knows though..
Last I heard, it was specifically the carpet adhesive. However, it seemed to only affect MKIV from 99.5 to 02. My 03 GLI didn't smell, but a friend's 02 completely reeked.
I love how that old crash test of the Jetta being rear ended made it a Golf. So if you got rear ended you now have a functioning hatchback.

Great information and very entertaining video man. My first car in Brazil was a VW Gol, a Brazilian version of the the Golf and a car to substitute the Beetle in BR. When I moved to the US in 1989 my first car was a 1985 Golf GTI, then a 1984 BMW 325e (amazing car), 1991 Corrado G60 and from that on I go into BMWs and Porsches and it became a VICE. Today, 30 years later, I live in Europe and I found a very low mileage (52k kilometers) 1997 Golf CL with a bunch of options and I ended up buying it for my son. Luckier me, I found an 1995 Audi S6 Avant (URS6) one owner and I couldn't let it pass. What an engine!! Keep the good work my friend and we'll keep watching. Cheers. L

I drive a 5 cylinder 2.5L N/A mk5 Jetta, AKA Bora where I live. It's definitely a solid daily car. It can be exciting if you don't care about gas mileage, and the engine sounds pretty good without modifying the exhaust or intake. I got it past the 205 thousand kilometer mark, (about 127k miles) and quite honestly keep it in pretty good shape. I recently changed all of the suspension components but the springs, steering (rack and linkage), and all brake components were changed to give the ride quality an overhaul, and it worked wonders. Needless to say it starts to show it's age (it's a 2006) like the A/C not being as effective, windows being slow, and interior wear and sometimes the gearbox likes to slam reverse in when selected (I know, automatics are for pansies but it's just more comfortable). I constantly travel to a neighboring city about 200km away, and it does damn fine, comfortable cornering at about 160 kph and doesn't break a sweat. being able to adjust seat height and having a telescopic steering column are great features to have, as well as the smaller details like automatic windows and trunk latch. Visibility is also great, except for the small side mirrors. What's with the 2000s trend of making side mirrors small anyway?
Overall it is a very solid car to daily drive and not too expensive to maintain, though I am looking at options to increase the power output (150 hrsprs, 230 nm factory spec, minus a few over time) slightly as the acceleration is sub-par. Cornering is surprisingly good, though it tends to understeer at tight turns being FWD even though it stays relatively flat when not bashing it. The ride quality is not great as it's a bit bouncy when a single occupant is in the car, but it is smooth as silk when on interstate travel or with 4 people in it. The trunk space is incredible, I constantly fit a whole drum set (minus the 22'' kick drum) and sizeable amplifier without needing to fold the seats over, a feature which is also good to have. Finally, another positive is the sound system. Pretty loud without saturation and It has Bluetooth from the factory and an integrated equalizer so it delivers more than enough without the need to modify it.
All in all I love the little car. I would rate it 8/10 as a daily driver, Though I hope to afford something a little sportier for the weekends at some point (maybe newer too).
OH YAH BOY! Still building my jetta flair from 1990. It is only the year when vw made wider bumpers and littlebit lower car. Loving it!

My dad had a Jetta when I was little, drove it across North America many times. I vividly remember it had a melted tail light from a car fire it was parked beside that never got got fixed. It also had custom interior that my mom and dad splashed with red white back paint on the beige interior that I would always try to pick the paint off. I spoke my first words in this car and it honestly started my love for cars even though it was a straight bucket. Near the end of its life whenever it idled the dash would shake violently rattling the change in the dash, it always made me smile and my dad loved it. He had that car for 18 years. Sadly the ball joint snapped off, my family was pretty pour at the time and my dad had to sell it for parts, I never seen I man to this day so sad to let go of an inanimate object. I always told my dad when I was little I’d buy him a viper (didn’t have much of a concept for money obviously) but I think he would love an old Jetta more than anything

Mk4 was sold in Europe as VW Bora. They started selling the car under name Jetta in EU from the 5th generation.
Same in Argentina, Jettas were sold as Boras over here and never used the Jetta name. We got Ventos as well
Same in Brazil. It turned into Jetta with the Mk7 Golf design.
Until the sixth gen, only the first two generations were globally known as Jetta:
* MkI: Jetta wolrdwide (in Mexico ut was initially known as the Atlantic whereas the Gold was known as the Caribe)
* Mk II: Jetta worldwide
* Mk III: Jetta in the Americas and Asia, Vento in Europe (the Vento nameplate would be later reused for the sedan version of the Mark V Polo)
* Mk IV: Jetta in the Americas and Asia, Bora in Europe
* Mk V: Jetta in NORTH America and Asia, Bora in Europe and Latin America
* Mk VI: Jetta worldwide again (except in Argentuna, it seems)
* Mk VI: AFAIK, due to sales, now it's only sold in North America, still under the Jetta nameplate, although since MkVI the name is only a marketing device, as starting that generation it is no longer a sedan variant for the Golf.
@@madurera47 We got the Jetta MK5 that started selling here around 2007, it coexisted with the Jetta MK4, which was under the name of Bora until 2011 in Brazil (right when the jetta switched from MK5 to MK6). It was a weird move from VW, but i guess it actually was sold as a middle range between Jetta and Voyage.
@@VeggiePopper MK V is Jetta in Europe too
Hello guys what about the forgotten VW CORRADO WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW
I went from a 2001 Oldsmobile Alerp (puke) to a 2010 Jetta Sportwagen. I LOVE this vehicle. The gas mileage on the diesel is insane.
Thankfully, I haven't needed any major repairs yet.
VR6! We miss you! My 94 jetta vr6 glx was a blast to drive! So was my 02 awp 1.8t Jetta! Totaled both!
you should a up to speed on the mitsubishi chrysler collaboration (eagle talon , mitsu starion)
They did it's the eclipse and gt 3000

We need an episode that you all tell us all the cars you've owned
I learned to drive on my mom’s MK2 automatic. Didn’t appreciate that car till many years later: nostalgia- I’m old.
Got me a 2014 jetta tdi and it definitely turns heads at the pumps. People think I'm stupid for putting diesel in a car. Always love the looks people have when they actually see it
2019 GLI is one of my babies and I love it 😍 my first car ever was a 2002 bottom trim Jetta lmao VAG for life
Love the bringing up of the "crayon" smell! It was so true on my Wolfie, the glue they used throughout the cabin was largely composed of wax.
Just grabbed a Mk 5 Jetta last week and immediately came looking for this vid for a rewatch lol
I had a Mk1 and a 4 door Wolfsburg Mk2.I always planed on getting another one as a project car one day.
Dunno man, this car got jesse killed
Truth
Jesse got Jesse killed
Jesse used NOS too soon Junior
His fault
He probably had more than a hundred grand under the hood of that thing
I know this reference

I love my four door diesel Jetta mk1. It’s slow as all get out but it’s such a fun car to drive. And rolling coal on a ram is hilarious!
I had an 84 turbodiesel about 20yrs ago.
A little tweaking and it ran low 15s getting the same mileage as before.
You are the absolute best at your deliver. I love this channel!!🤣😂🤣😂😆
No mention of the glorious 2.5L 5 cylinder except the beginning sting :(
Yeah, I'm so disappointed. Plus the MkV had independent rear suspension and a super rigid body and was actually really good, but they just skipped over that.
Being an owner of a 2.5L that thing is complete trash both in power and gas efficiency so really it doesn't hit the mark anywhere
It only sounded good. It was a nightmare mechanicaly. Then 2.5l i mean
It was half of a Gallardo engine and it sounded like one too, I can't believe they didn't mention it.
@@Maroco918 How's it mechanically a nightmare? It's one of the most reliable engines to come out of Volkswagen, probably only second to the 2.0 / 2.Slow. Sure it didn't get the best fuel economy on paper mainly b/c it was competing at the time with Direct Injection 4 Liter turbo poppers while it was using a Naturally Aspirated Port Injection. From personal experience you'll see way more 2.0T needing work then the 2.5L. Now they moved the block up to the RS line up of cars like the TTRS & RS3 from Audi.
THE SMELL
From around 98 to 10ish the padding under the carpet had had a chemical that when broken down by heat made the crayon smell. In some rare cases people had thier carpet replaced when some customers complained of headaches
Correct! My e46 bmw smells the same.
Same thing with the new beetle
Actually. Vw used beeswax to seal all the welds in the frame and when it got hot enough it would melt. You could see it in the door frames on most of the mk4s
wasn't that the same problem with the early 2000's bug, but it was beneath (above really, depending on how you look at it) the headliner?
I heard it was the injection mold release wax for the door panels and such that made it smell like crayons
THE CRAYON SMELL!! Top 10 most nostalgic scents for me lol
Working on a rebuild of a 1.8l 8v '90 mk2 Wolfsburg edition. Bought and owned by my grandmother for 27 years before it fell into my brother's hands who ultimately destroyed the engine with his driving habits. Wasn't much of a head gasket left. Working on a full rebuild with lifted cam.
I used to own a mkiv. She was the most fun car I've ever driven. She was gentle on the road but could move if you needed her to. She wasn't fast but was a blast to drive (I owned a 2.0l) and had good acceleration. Unfortunately, a transmission failure killed her and I had to sell her. I was so sad to lose such a great car. I've been looking for a replacement ever since.
Whenever I feel sad... I just watch an episode and feel that complete 180 degrees of feelings when student pumphrey pops up...
Former MK4 Jetta owner here. The lovely crayon smell was from the sound deadening BAYBAY!!
I just bought a 03 jetta in near perfect condition for 1500, it's the manual too. Can't wait to get my license 🤘
Just got my permit, hell yea
Hey love how far the show has come, keep it up you guys should do episode on when people first started detailing the interiors and exteriors of their cars ,or when it started to become more popular. Keep up the good work👌
Awesome fun video, great presenting. I'm currently driving a mk5 Jetta 2TFSI, and despite just spend the whole day rebuilding one of the rear callipers, I think it's a great car. It covers all bases, family car, sporty car, towing car, fits a load of firewood in the boot, and (as I recently discovered) even has launch control
I love my 2011 Jetta SE. The manual and automatic drive is one of my favorite features. The interior is cool too. I had a 89 but was really slow. Would like to have a 90s with a turbo engine. Probably would be faster than mine. Mine has more weight I'd think, and not turbo, but pretty fast. 2.0
I just got an MK6 a few months ago. I expected it to a project with 82,000 miles, and *two* previous owners, one of which did a muffler delete, which I love, the welding is top notch. It’s actually a very nice regular car, with the ability to go fast… Everyone who sees it says “this car will last the rest of your life”. She’s my souped up baby, she ain’t for pushing the limits, she’s for “oh hell naw, you ain’t cutting me off”.
That’s why I do upgrades, I just want to coast, but I want other people to know I don’t appreciate them breaking my peace, and ruin theirs.
I got the same jetta as the one in background, with it being a manual makes it such a fun little car
