Keep in mind, this tale has multiple layers. Polyphemus is a Young/Child Cyclops. Still like 20 feet tall, but a child. Hes also physically challenged/handicapped because he's a Runt/Dwarfism Cylcops. Hes smaller and weaker than even others of his age. The sheep are given to him by Poseidon as gifts to be his friends since the other Cyclops either ignore him or abuse him. So Odysseus came in, killed the favorite and only friends of a child, took them all, ate them (later of course), FURTHER crippled/mutilated him, and left him there to be abused more. At least if he killed him, then he wouldn't have been out in any more pain, which is Poseidon's point. Odysseus' mercy was crueler than just killing him

“Mircsy when I get you” is such a common phrase from the people I’ve seen watch this lol

A fun fact about Survive is that, according to Jorge in one of his videos, the first hit with the club only _injured_ Polites. The _second_ hit is what finally killed him. And the rest kill one man each. I counted like 15 total club smacks, so that's roughly 13 total deaths.

It would be 14 total deaths, polities + 13 other soldiers

That hospitality thing is called the law of Xenia. The law was so important that Zues himself oversaw that law as one of his major domains.

See the name was on the tip of my tongue and I did remember it was something Zeus himself oversaw. Man took that VERY seriously... despite many, MANY other flaws.

These two videos are why Mircsy is my personal favorite when it comes to the animatics. The expression work along with Polyphemus' design and the timing of the animation is fantastic!

Oh crap! The hospitality thing makes this SO much worse! Especially because even Poseidon realized, "Freaking hell, I just killed almost his entire crew and I didn't know the whole story, dammit."

this is why i love Mircsy animatics and Anniflamma s Ruthlessness, both potraid Polyphemus and Poseidon in a scary and powerfull form

I like Gigi's ruthlessness more in a storytelling perspective with how it meshes with the other songs and story, but I like Anniflamma's more visually as its own discrete entity, with the very cool Poseidon design.

19:30 I just noticed the little lotus eater holding Odysseus’s hair (so cute!!!)
Edit: 21:58 the little lotus eater trying to reach out for Odysseus is so cute but so sad cause if you think about it could look like it doesn’t want him to get hurt by the cyclops

Hear me out, I think the background for the stage should have a giant screen that would have effects for things. Like ocean waves during Storm, etc. Like imagine when Zeus comes in in the Horse and the Infant to have a little clouds and lightning for ambiance. So Polyphemus is a giant red eye that appears on the screen then disappears. Then they treat the Cyclops like they treated the giant in Into the Woods; they face the audience and look up like they're speaking to a person. In the song where they're fighting him, they could go out into the audience and look like they're fighting, leaving Polites onstage.

I particularly love mircsy’s design here. Odysseus is in the wrong from an objective standpoint especially when you take the Godly Laws of hospitality into account. Odysseus invaded Polyphemus’s home, killed his friend, and then tried to steal everything else. He even dismissed the value Polyphemus attributes to his sheep by calling what is murder from Poly’s perspective a simple misunderstanding.
The question, or rather theme, of “When does a Man become a Monster,” is excellently displayed here and is all the more accentuated by mircsy’s design of Poly, the focus on the sheep during “no bloodshed in here today”, and the addition of horns to Odysseus’s shadow. Who’s the Monster here? The utterly terrifying and hideous creature (again, exceptional work Mircsy. My favorite cyclops design ever.) or just a man?

When it comes to Polyphemus, I think it would be really cool if they did something like what Starkid did for Wiggly in their musical Black Friday. That was super cool and would definitely add to the surprise when he appears.

The play doesn't bring up hospitality in Act 1 at least, they might bring it up in Act 2.
    Spoilers from snippets/the original stories
The suitors are abusing the $#!& out of the hospitality rules and basically cant be evicted until they literally try to murder and assault their host.
Edit (made the comment too early): you talked about it already for the polyphemus being a bad host, that may still come up with Odysseus's silver tongue though

Polites dying here is entirely a Jorge original. In the Myth i believe he dies during the Scylla/Charbdis section or when their boat gets Zeused.! This was entirely designed to just traumatize the audience and Ody!

In correction of my comment on the previous video: Despite the storytelling possibilities of Odysseus'... Relations with Circe and Calypso (especially in consideration of the dubious nature of his consent in those relations), with further research into the events of The Telegony I think it was probably for the best that ties to it were cut. My greatest interest in Epic beyond seeing the end of the story is whether or not Jorge is planning to do The Iliad and The Odyssey, and how he would shift events there to tell a story as well.
Tl;dr The Telegony is *pretty bad.*

The gods and monsters were all bound to the laws of hospitality. It was one of the single most important aspects of Greek culture and Zeus himself oversaw the law as one of his -major- domains.
