- I've had the Garmin Epix Pro 51mm (Gen 2) for 6 months now, wearing it every single day and night to make the most of it. Thoughts of a 70-year-old man. Running on my mind has been so encouraging since Saturday. When I received my watch received it at 1:30 on Saturday had it set up and fully functional by 3 o’clock on Monday afternoon. I reckon this is pretty good for 70-year-old who is not very techie. This watch seems to be a marvel and is very user-friendly. Besides one glitch I had no trouble setting it up. I’ve watched this channel and others for a week prior to receipt of my watch.I returned an instinct 2X in exchange for the Epix Pro 51 mm worth it. Admit to getting very stressed while setting the watch up.But now it’s done, I can relax and enjoy it. Now I can use it and exercise and diet and decrease my fitness age. I highly recommend this model, Garmin.

I love my gen 2. Also the fenix 6x pro was a fine device, but the absolute bonkers battery life and that gorgeous display sold it for me.

I've been using my epix pro gen2 47mm titanium for a little over a year and i absolutely love this watch. I did a lot of hikes... a lot, uploading gpx and then using the offline maps for hours and hours. Great product.
I also had some issues witg the OHR sensor, specially when it's cold outside, for me it will show too low BPM.... a bit annoying.
But when it's cold and i go for a hike, then ill use my polar H10 ecg strap.

@Runningonthemind avec plaisir. I had a look to some Garmin forums and I saw a lot of users complaining about the OHR sensor. But for me it's mostly good. But when I was hiking in cold weather, sometimes my watch was showing 80-90 BPM when I was going up a hill and it was pretty hard so that's impossible. A Swiss youtuber told me it could be linked to blood vessels constriction due to the cold and I think this could make sense. And when it's hot then the opposite happens... vessels will dilate. And since the OHR sensor leds depens on vessels, veins and blood flow... that could be the issue. Anyway I solved this by using a H10 sensor. Hopefully this comment helps? Greetings from Belgium
I've got exactly the same watch. Epix pro 51mm sapphire gen 2. I've only had it for a month and a half. I've had an instinct 2x before. But i needed more. I run 5 times a week, between 40 and 50 ks weekly in total. I completely agree with you. The epix is the best you can get. I'm getting the same usage percentage you are getting, no complaints. I don't have that hr issue you mentioned, my only complaint is the nap tracking, usually doesn't track any naps. But I've heard that it's transversal to garmin watches, it's a bug that they haven't fixed properly. I've been babying my watch, maybe because it was so expensive. I'm gonna start using it at the beach, or pool. I guess I'll have to pass the fear of scratches. Great video!!! Thanks
@@carloscssr thanks for the kind feedback Carlo, glad you enjoy it as much as I do. It really is super rugged, but like anything that you care about lot about, looking after it is a good idea. I’m careful but obsessive about it because it’s not needed. I’ve panicked a few times when I’ve bashed it accidentally on a drawer for example, and absolutely no marks at all. I have the instinct 2x and was looking at the epix pro 51mm. Is the size similar, does it feel a lot heavier. I wear the instinct 2x 24/7
@@billscully2521 the size is the same, the screen is larger and much more readable. I don't find it heavy at all, its heavier than the instinct 2x, but not heavy. I wear it 24/7 ,run 40k plus 4 days a week, i don't even feel the watch. It's extremely comfortable in my opinion. And has much more features than the instinct. I mean much more, even the flashlight is stronger. It's a different watch league.

Ive the Forerunner 965 a fantastic watch but this watch has caught my eye
@@markhill8590 the forerunners are great but these (fenix 7 pro and epix pro) are very rugged and pretty much bullet proof. The 965 is nice though.. possibly worth waiting for the Fenix 8 as that will come out with the same display sometime in the near future.
I wish there was a smart watch for normal blokes like me. I have zero interest in steps, walking, running, training etc, and find it quite annoying that every smartwatch is stuffed with features for it. Especially find it annoying that most of the nice watch faces have steps etc on it. All I want are health related functions like heart rate, oxygen saturation, sleep monitoring etc.
I hear you. Most of the watch faces on Garmin are customisable, so you can see or not see whatever is important to you. Also the same for the Garmin app mate, you can set it up to only show you what you want to see. Have you looked at the instinct 2? Maybe a good option for you.

Good video, I would just like to add, I have 47" and have not noted any wrong HR's readings, especially not so high as you mention, up to 120. As for my walking sessions, I have tested few times with HR belt linked to my FR 255 and now using just Epix Pro, so reliable was HR. Was catching pulse in 5 metres when suddenly increasing speed or decreasing or going uphill. However I must admit I never run, just power/fast walk. In winter I'm always using HR belt.
@@mp7925 thanks for taking the time to give feedback. My wife has the same as you and she also doesn’t get the strange increases. I was walking the other day (without HR strap) and the HR went to 223!!. I had to delete the walk and reset it and then all is fine again. Great video, thanks. I’m just in the market for a new Garmin (after 4 happy years with a Fenix 5 in 47 mm). The problem you are having with the OHR could be a size related. I just talked to a sports outfitter. He mentioned that the OHR could be problematic if the watch is too big in relation to the wrist. Because of the size and the weight the sensor would simply slip too much off center. I’m no expert but since I have small wrists (17,5 mm) the 51 mm version is a big and heavy one. So I tend to buy a 47 mm version again. First world problems. 😉
Thanks do much for the positive comment. I did hear that about wrist size too. I do have a fairly chunky wrist and the smaller versions do look and feel a little small for me. I also had the Fenix 6 x and 7 x (for a short while) and neither had the same issue, but it definitely could be placement. It really does happen only rarely so I can live with it. I think the fenix 8 will be released soon (in a few weeks) and it looks very similar to the Epix, but likely with a small speaker for text dictation and maybe Bluetooth calls 👍
Love mine and love the flashlight,use it all the time

Great review. Just picked one up for £478 (47mm). Loads of websites showing low prices for these and the Fenix 7 Pro. Looks like the 8 will be out soon.

@@RunningonthemindIt's a present for my wife. I've had my Fenix 6 pro pretty much the week they came out in 2019. It's amazing that the battery life is still really good. It has dropped off a but not enough yet that I want to change it. I only take it off to charge up. The sleep data is brilliant. Many times I have woke up from a dream looked at the time and it perfectly lines up with the data on the app in the morning. Crazy stuff.
@@Ecoroof1986 ah she will love it, my wife has it also. I had the 7x for a while also, but ended up giving that to my eldest son for his health journey. Fenix 6 and 7 are both amazing 🫡👍

Waiting for sept for garmins new release to upgrade from my fenix 6. I’m hoping for more accurate sleep/health metrics and better measurement of strength training
That makes sense, the fenix 6 is a great watch but I suspect the 8 will be a decent upgrade for sure. I agree that the sleep metrics are the weakness, although generally is roughly right but just not as accurate as some other options out there. However, if I have to compromise anything on a Garmin the it would be the sleep metrics over the gps accuracy etc. I hear a rumour that Garmin will be releasing a subscription service as part of the new tech announcements, not sure I like that idea.

The new Fenix will be interesting as if it has the Amoled display then I’m not too sure there will be any new versions of the Epix, but let’s see what Garmin have up their sleeve? 🫶🏻🫡

I am 70 years old and I am concerned about my health, hence I decided that’s a Garmin would enable me to remain aware of my health. I expect that it will enable me to slowly improve my physical abilities. A fitness trainer so to say. I ordered an instinct 2X tactical a couple of days ago and sent it back today. Decided to get the epic gen 2 pro sapphire. Cost a lot of money for the use I will have of it,but money spent on health is money well spent. My only concern is the life span, I’m likely to get of the battery and whether it can be replaced?

The time to comment sir, and good for you for thinking about your health, I agree anything that helps you be aware and promote movement and good health is always money well spent. The Epix is a lot more than the Instinct, but it’s way more for your money and a great decision if you ask me. The Amoled displays have come a long way since first being around, and I’ve no doubt the ones used on the Epix and Fenix will run many many years. The battery used in the Epix is amazing you don’t need to worry about that at all.
You cannot replace the battery of any GPS watch currently available.

I’m quite excited.I’v been all week watching reviews of Garmin watches and I’ve familiarised myself with them. Of course, it will take some practice for me to utilise my watch.I’m looking into joining a gym, and will be doing some exercises at home. Followed by some extensive walks. Watch arrived, seems to be in good order Being white, I got a deal on it £545. It will keep me busy for a very long time so much to learn about it. No regrets for exchanging the Instinct 2X I originally purchased. Besides Keeping it clean the white strap and watch are growing on me. Going to spend lots of time learning about the watch. @@FrancisPierre-rk6fw enjoy it, and if you decide you prefer another colour strap then remember they are quick release so you can get alternative colours, my wife did the same and got a blue one which she much prefers compared to the white. Thank you, it is expensive that’s for sure but it’s a great watch and does so much. The forerunners are also good and less expensive and also the Fenix 7 solar is almost as good but with the MIP display.

Have a Fenix 6S trying to justify the upgrade and this has really helped, especially as I’ve found the Pro gen 2 S for £479, but now wondering if the 51mm @ £525 is too big (even if the battery is better) how is it living with the larger size?
You are welcome Michael. The smaller version is exactly the same functionality (my other half has it) so if you don’t mind charging it every 8-10 days then you’ll be all good 👍
I link my Epix Pro, though I wish I went with the 51 mm version.

Just bought fenix 7 pro sapphire solar- and find it not very comfortable for running- its too heavy. Was debating whether to get this or Forerunner 965. I might return this fenix and go for 965 even though im not very keen on the looks of 965 and not a fan of amoled but i think it will be more comfortable
@@vaidasmince553 It’s definitely a heavy watch (the fenix 7 pro) my eldest son also has that. But the battery life is incredible. I actually like the 965 it it’s not as rugged as the fenix or epix. I think it’s a good idea to try it out and to see if it’s comfortable as you say because you need to feel great when you run. Silly question maybe but are you wearing it tight when you run? I find that it’s less noticeable if it’s tightly fitted during exercise. Another option to consider is the epix pro that’s the smaller size at 42mm, it’s the same watch but has a smaller battery in it so weighs less. My wife has it and it’s noticeably lighter.

@@SharaRuns it’s almost the same Shara, just the display is different. My son has the Fenix 7 x and it’s identical. The fenix 7 has a longer battery which is also fantastic.

One Question: Is the watch able to receive SMS/emails/messages/notifiations via your Android phone's BlueTooth and/or WiFi, and can you reply to these received messages via the watch itself?
@@charltheron2769 yo can get notifications yes, on both Apple and Android. Notifications from iPhone are more restricted than android though - for example, my ring doorbell notifications have the image of who is at the door on android, but Apple disable it for anything that isn’t iWatch. I don’t think you can reply to messages other than some short pre programmed responses on the Epix, but believe there are other Garmins like the venu that you can.
@@Runningonthemind Yes, a quick preset of responses to notifications on the Epix Pro2 will be what I also require.

Awesome - the Fenix 8 will be out soon. If you are using the 3 then you’ll love all of the new features of the newer generations. Are you planning on the next gen of Fenix or Epix? I guess they will be very similar now as they will change the Fenix screen this time.

There are quiet a few between the pro gen 2 (the one I have) and the Epix. Size options, bigger battery, touchscreen, flash light etc. the Garmin website does a full comparison between the different Epix versions which give the full list 👍
Do you pay a yrarly fee ? For maps or data ?
Nope, it’s all included. There are rumours that Garmin may introduce a subscription service soon, but one of the great things about Garmin is you get maps, training support and loads of great metrics all included when you buy the watch.
Great video mate, do you ever use the watch for phone calls or texts?
Thank you mate, appreciate you saying that. There is limited functionality on the Epix Pro for that, you can’t make any phone calls on it but obviously get the notification as you’d expect. You can read texts but there isn’t the freedom to write much but you can program some simple replies on Garmin connect to use. There are other garmins where you can do much more in that regard, think the venu 3. Hope that helps mate 🫡
What do you think of the tactix 7 pro with the fancy screen ?
@@Spongerob2449 it actually looks and performs a lot like the Epix pro, has the same battery in the 51mm also. The screen is the same and price is similar. I’ve not used it but it looks like the Epix pro but with different functionality aimed more at military type activities. Hold my hands up though that it’s just based on what I see on the Garmin website and not real world experience.

I still think using GPS for speed metrics, is way too slow to react to changes in speed. The only real solution is a footpod.

Fair - it’s expensive. I justify it because I use it a lot every day and don’t spend money on other things like alcohol but it’s definitely an expensive thing for what is as you say, a digital watch.
@@RunningonthemindThat’s a very tolerant reply. Because as we know it is far more than a digital watch. As you implied, it’s a sports computer with back up from sports scientists and athletes. Truly an amazing machine to have on your wrist. When I lost my previous Garmin Fenix I was really down for a few days until I had a replacement. O’ and it also tells the time!
Can you see $100k for a mechanical watch?
I disagree about Amoled strongly.
1. After 2 + years burn in happens left and right ñow with AoD amoled epix. We can be pretty sure that life expectancy is much shorter.
2. It's simply unusable as bike computer as the screen dims after 15sec and you don't see shit. Have always to tap the screen. This is an absolute joke and near no reviewer mentions it. This as a multi sports watch.
3. The battery at 42 and 47mm is a joke compared to Fenix. Especially if you want to listen to music huge difference.
4. Gesture mode has a time delay and in a race is a problem
5. Despite what reviewers say in direct sunlight MIP kills amoled.
Yes amoled is shinier but there is zero functional advantage only negative points.
The day Garmin changes completely to amoled will be a sad day. All about shiny stuff
At last but that's subjective. Amoled looks like a candy store but not a watch at all. As a 24h watch also at work MIP is looking much better and more natural like a clock and not a small TV on your wrist.
Firstly thank you for taking the time to share you thoughts, it’s appreciated. I totally get your points and in your use case I can understand why you feel so strongly. I had time with the Fenix 6 and for a short while the 7 solar and I wasn’t against the MIP display, I liked it actually but just for my circumstances for running the amo display works very nicely. The battery life for the smaller versions is definitely a consideration if you are coming from the like of the Fenix and want the always on display, but to be fair compared to the iWatch it’s also reasonably good. For me though, if I hadn’t gone with the 51mm with the decent battery life then I would have stuck with the 7 for that reason.
I appreciate your feedback and taking the time, and it certainly shows that for every person that likes something there is also somebody who prefers something else for their own reasons. I did hear that the Fenix 8 will be Amoled which I assume isn’t that you wanted to see.
I agree with every point, that's why I switched from epix back to Fenix
@@Runningonthemind Fenix 8 Amoled was to be expected, as Garmin tries to go hard for Apple customers. Sadly only leaves Coros as a serious competitor with MIP displays and I don't like the Coros watches I have tested. But yeah if Garmin goes full amoled I will go full "not Garmin " in the future.
There’s no difference between multiband and single band gps it’s just a gimmick
@@stevegraham3041 Interesting you say that Steve. I Can say that I got way more gps errors on the fenix 6 with gps creep than I do with the epix that’s for sure. Well if I use multiband the track is measured much more precise as is pace. It's quite a huge difference especially with trees around
@@listrahtes that’s exactly my experience too, which is why I was surprised at the comment and would like to see the literature to show that it’s the case. For me there is a significant accuracy change between the fenix 6 and the epix which is also the case for my sons fenix 7 x also.
The #1 thing that bothers me (I assume its just the EPIX PRO) is that you cannot see the BPM when you look at your HR zones (watch or connect). It just shows percentages. If I switch from Max HR to HRR, I cannot see the difference in BPM….It’s odd that they would change this function. My old Fenix 6 will show you the BPM and %.
I also like to know how Steve's statement can be substantiated by his assertion. Can you provide details sir?
