    I'm pleased to have recently acquired a Steel Tongue Drum from @LOMUTY Musical Instruments. The model I have is a 12", including 11 tones. The range on this instrument is 1.5 octaves (G2-C4). I have enjoyed having it and experimenting with it. It would make a lovely addition to any musical home, because it's simple and fun to play (and it's sound doesn't overwhelm the house).

    Hi Doug, I got forever hooked on your channel when I heard your reviews/analysis of Yes - Close to the edge and ELP - Tarkus. Not sure where to make requests, but I'd love to see your breakdown of Steely Dan's title cut of Aja, their longest and most complex/ambitious work.

    Reminds me of the Hang drum.
    Same kind of design but different sound.
    I think the Hang drum came out like 15 or 20 years ago.

    Hi Doug, I treated myself to a cheap (£6, 6 inch) single octave tongue drum in the summer. Your absolutely right they are so much fun, and a great way to work out the structure and timing of a melody. I'd always struggled with Ode to Joy, and now I've realised it was my rhythm , not the notes that were wrong.
    From Beethoven I gone to the other end of the alphabet to Chariots of Fire by Vangelis and King of Pain (in C not D as the original) by The Police.
    Thanks for this post, like you I believe music should be about participation, not merely appreciation.

    I recently bought another vendor's version of this, of which (mine) is not as nicely constructed. One note is that you can increase dynamics by using fingertips to strike the notes. One thing that I have found doing this is that becomes easier to exploit the difference / range in where I strike each "tongue" of the drum. Another suggestion is that if you use one hand for striking notes, then you can use the other to give some "pedal effect" to the drum, muting overtones and trail/tail to the note's envelope - similar to how many latin percussionists will sometimes use one hand for manipulating the tone and envelope (qualitative) and at others as a second striking instrument (quantitative). Definitely fun and unique instruments that are becoming available to the ordinary musician and music-curious! Once again, you are making music accessible to the masses, which is a great thing for all!

    Such a lovely sound. I used a VST for a short 1 minute composition for 5 instruments (recorder, classical guitar, bass, ukulele and steeldrum) that was the only instrument I didnt actually own ...
    I mean I loved the way the VST sounded but it certainly pales in comparison to the real thing.
    Thank you so much for presenting (or interviewing) your little metal friend. Quite an interesting character :)

    Hi, Doug!
    My name's Fábio, I recently discovered your channel and fell immediately in love with It! I'm from Brazil and watching you react to Angra was fun and brought a warming feeling to my heart. I love Angra ever since I was a little fella and Andre's vocals inspired my to start studying singing, something I still do to this day. Well, now that I got that out of the way, I'd like to suggest a Band for you to react to. Please, react to something from the progressive metal legends Cynic. They've been around since the 80's and recently faced some dark times with the passing of 2 of their original members. But that didn't stop them from recording a new album, due to be released in November. The first single is amazing and you should check them out.
    Thanks for your channel, Doug! I wish you all the best!

    Hi, just as a recommendation; there is a major spanish recent rock work which I do recommend called "mayéutica" from Robe; the track I would like you to react to is Primer movimiento: Después de la cararsis. Its a solo rock Album but as a composer I think you would enjoy it. If I don't mistake, Robe has little to no musical education.

      so you think the multiple layers of harmonics would be improved by removing clarity ... intriguing ... how exactly ?

    • @matdemaz
      @matdemaz Před 2 lety

      @@EvilSean62 Er, well, the sound itself is already pretty dull and atmospheric, similar to a Fender Rhodes keyboard, would just work as an aid to make those types of compositions sound nice and smooth. Of course the drum could work with it's full frequencies. I'd love to try it one day, it's a beautiful instrument.

    • @EvilSean62
      @EvilSean62 Před 2 lety

      @@matdemaz hmmm... i disagree ... i think the drum sound is very rich in harmonics and reducing the "fi" ...well wouldnt that be reducing the fidelity of the original instrument ( yes viewers thats whay lo and hi fi mean ...low and high fidelity to the original )
      and in doing so wouldnt you lose the resonance of the drum and make it ...well ... less?
      i would like to apply a variable granular filter on a pedal and play it like a wah wah
      im intrigued by your suggestion but i need more info
      feel free to ignore me but i only just discovered you can bend the tongues upward enough to let me get a bow on them!!!
      i like the idea of intelligently fucking with any given signal

    • @matdemaz
      @matdemaz Před 2 lety

      @@EvilSean62 Oh, nah, you're right, I think I worded it wrong, I meant just running a high pass on the drum, still wanna keep the bass and whatnot, otherwise it sounds horrible. I just did a test on a sound sample in Reaper, and it basically showed me that. It loses a bit of presence in a mix, especially if you are using a lot of stuff. Better off with a presence, unless it's a really minimalistic thing. The mids are also really important, when I scooped them you can't even hear the drum in the mix, lol. Barely...
      Hopefully you have luck getting a bow for it. Happy signal fucking... around.

      @@matdemaz i have a bow ... im a bass player ... including upright ... 2k for a big drum and they are tuned like blues harmonicas ... so id need at least 3 ...also they are tuned major or minor so thats 6 to play in one key at 2k each to sound like an app my wife has on her i pad
      edit ...
      i have a handsonc but the sample pack is crazy £££
      ...BUT ...the handsonic accepts any sample in the correct format so i am hopeful ..
      id really really like one though ...the dynamics of striking are going to need adjustments on the handsonic ...not sure it has enough channels , its basically midi so 16

    the big ones are expensive ... bass players are always on the naughty step ... my strings are £ 130 a set ,,to punish me
    normally im the natural predator of the drummer but these things are great ... soooo ..i was going to say spiritual but i really hate that word ... is there a word that a non spiritual person who feels the same things can use without drinking the wholesome natural fruit based cordial
    id not like to settle for the small tinny one ... i heard the 20 plus inch one ... its , well i was going to say biblical ... yeah ... but it really is spinally resonant all the way down and all the way both arms all the hairs
