- Can I guess the real British item versus ALDI knock-offs? Let's see!
While blindfolded, I taste tested branded British products versus ALDI knock-offs to see if I could tell which was which! I was actually really surprised at some of these.. I had no idea they would be so similar!

Hey! I'm Alanna - a thirty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a CZcams video every Tuesday plus an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT/BST on Twitch.

I think Aldi gets extra points for calling the not-Snickers 'Racer' as a play on 'Marathon' which is what we used to call Snickers, and a lot of brits are still kind of bitter about them changing.
Should try their knock off Mars, called Titan.
Like an astronomy lesson but in chocolate 😀
@@stephenlee5929 isnt titan one of the moons of mars? bravo on the name play
I watched a Series 10 episode of Frasier this week where Martin Crane saw a Marathon in the vending machine, so presumably the name changed later in the US? Answering my own question, we changed in the UK in 1990 so was Seattle somehow behind the rest of the world?
@@hairyairey Did a bit of digging. Snickers were actually always called that in the US. However they had an unrelated choccy product called Marathon, which was basically an american version of a Curly Wurly, but its no longer available.
I love the aldi version names, particularly "anti-establishment IPA" for Punk IPA
I also love that brewdog rather than getting mad used it as a fun oppurtunity to Create Ald IPA and both brands benefitted 😂😂😂
Great video, Alanna - the things you do for science! I wonder if the fake Snickers being called Racer is a reference to Snickers previously being called Marathon here?
Thanks so much!
And the fake Mars is called Titan, one of Saturn's moons.
As for the fake twix being called jive, I haven't got a clue 😆
I'm glad the knock-off Penguin impersonator got your seal of approval.
Davidstow pronounced the same as Davids Toe. I live a couple of miles from the Davidstow creamery here in Cornwall ❤😊
Indeed, her mispronounciation of that was driving me bonkers!!!!!!!!!
I love a good Adventures and Naps food video!
☺️
A lot of Aldi (and other supermarket own brands) products are made in the same factory as the branded stuff, in many cases being the EXACT same product as the branded products. Most of the Aldi crisps are identical to the branded counterparts and are made at a couple of different factories (Golden Wonder make most supermarket crisps but also any crisps that used to be Smith's crisps but now sold under walkers brand name are still made in the golden wonder factory) and the Aldi tortilla chips did used to be the same as Doritos, off the same production line. The only difference being, after a run of Doritos come to an end, a big roll of Aldi or Lidl or Asda etc bags are loaded on to the hopper and are filled up with the exact same product. Not only have I bought Aldi multipack snacks and had an actual monster munch packet in the big bag, but I also used to work at the factory in Scunthorpe doing this. They may use a different grade of seasoning or flavouring, but the chips/crisps will stoll be the same. And this process of using the same item for multiple stores is the same for most products throughout these stores. Kwik save used to sell a six pack of yogurt for 69p but the exact same yogurt went in to M&S yogurts that were £1.39 for 4. Kellogg's, who DON'T make cereals for anyone else actually do, under a separate company name but in an identical factory setup. So technically not Kellogg's, but it is Kellogg's. There are only 4 main fried pasta factiries in the world, so if you have dried pasta in your cupboard, unkess its a soeciality dried pasta frim a dpeciality company, then it came from one of thise 4 dried pasta factories. Every custard cream biscuit is made in the same factory but uses different recipes and grades of ingredients for different brands. Having worked at various food factories it is quite suprising how the same products get repackaged for so many different companies.
Also having workied in the ONLY supplier of McDonalds burgers in the uk and ireland (and partial suplkiwr to europe) i was not impressed with how it was run. It was a long time ago i wotked there, but it was mainly afency staff, and they just didnt give a $hit to vehinest. Any meat that falls on to the floor from the production line was supposed togo straight in to the waste bin. Nope they weee throwing it back on to the production line because they was too lazy to walk across the room to the bin. One or too other things i saw put me off wirking there for much longer, and also put me off eating McDonald's for life. This wasnt McDonald's practixes, it was just some lazy bastards the agency used to supply them with - i was also with that agency but i actually wanted the work as i had a family to provide for. But i couldnt do it working in there. I think i lasted about a month. And that McDonald's factory is still going in Scunthorpe to this day. I hope they have betrer staff now.
Hi, Alanna, that was very enjoyable. You could almost make a video just on eating pot noodle blindfolded, it was entertaining. That was an extremely fun video. Well done.
Thanks so much!
My absolute favourite Aldi Knock off is the Dr Pepper knock off called Professor Peppy 😂
A true knock-off winner
I absolutely love this you use to do this when you lived at the other flat.great to see it back again.thank you Alanna
Thanks so much! ☺️
Another great video Alanna, very entertaining ! Love the names stores give their knock-off products, Morrisons coming in at no.1 with their Milky Way --- a "Celestial " bar !😂😂😂
Aldi chocolate is yummy! One of the only ways Americans get European style chocolate organically. Growing up, I thought aldi was like dollar general... but it's my favorite shop now (living in rural America, not a lot to choose from but whatever! 😅)
That's awesome!
Or they can by Ghirardelli which is owned by Lindt.
@@charlestaylor9424 "one of" :)
That was very entertaining Alanna. You are a cheese freak!
That cheese she prefers, should be lots better than the Aldi version. When something costs about two and a half times the other, it goes without saying.
There are basically two factories that make all of the powered instant soups in the UK. There is pot noodle, and there is Symingtons. I suspect that the imitation pot noodle tastes so similar because it is made by the same people, in the same factory, to the same or nearly the same mix.
I think it is Golden Wonder
@@jamesbeeching6138 Pot Noodle hasn't been a Golden Wonder property for decades. They've been a Unilever brand since 2000.
@@Nimmo1492 ahhh OK.... 😉
Same with cakes and biscuits, almost all made by Mr Kipling regardless of which 'bakery' is listed on the box. Made alongside the branded products but to the customer's recipe.
Aldi is great. Often the knock offs are as good or better than the orginals. I find that after a while I can't go back because the orignal taste wrong!
My wife used to work for Thorntons chocolate and they made some products for Aldi. I think many of the "knock offs" could have been made in the same factory as the originals?
@@kevanparker908 A great (read: profitable) way to utilise the machinery and factories after they've finished runs for themselves I guess!
Great vlog Alanna. I mostly buy the supermarkets own brands, and I especially like Aldi zero cola. I did laugh out loud when you tried the pot noodles with no noodles on the forks 😂 Looking forward to your next vlog 😀
Aldi ZX cola is my favourite cola. And I drink a lot of the stuff. Definitely prefer it to Coke/Pepsi, and it's a fraction of the price.
Hey Alana...... I was that person in Aldi that recognised you. What a surprise. 😮 I thought you were quite quiet compared to how we see you on CZcams. Nice video again.
A 'Close Alanna Encounter of the Third Kind'.
7:29 The whole soft drink/pop range is a brilliant skirting of a copy :D
I laughed when you put the fork upside down in your mouth with nothing on it! TWICE!!! I mean I laughed out loud! Too funny.... Thanks.
Thanks Alanna, that was a really great taste test!
Thank you so much! ☺️
Another sweet video, Alanna. Cheers from the Pacific West Coast of Canada.
You are so silly and I love how much you got wrong. So relatable.
Oh I just knew cheese had to be involved! Thank you, now I need a snack. I feel a cheese, tomato and mayo sarni is just around the corner... and it will be Davidstow! Great vid by the way!
Thanks so much!
The mint Seal bars are really nice too (green wrapper), my Mum always has them. I can't buy Cadbury fingers, they're too addictive and I could scoff a whole box very easily!
Shops own products these days from any supermarket are generally as good as if not better than the branded stuff. There are some things you can’t skimp on like Pepsi but almost everything else is shops own. A great video.
Loved your video. The cheese test was not exactly fair though as you pitted Aldi cheddar against your own personal favourite.
hahaha! there is no sexier description than " i am dripping in pot noodle!" ;-p lmao. keep up the great work Alanna, big love to all people :)
I love that you're shocked when you're right and shocked when you're wrong 😂
As an aid to your continued Britification and obvious love and respect for our cheese 😁can I just mention that it's pronounced 'Cornwull' and 'Davidstoe'. Superb video, as always 😊👍
My mum came up with the the famous "P-pick-up-a-penguin" slogan as part of a competition and McVities totally ripped her off! I will never forgive McVities! Bastards!
Great video Alanna. I am shocked the Aldi cola was so good. I thought that would be obvious like Prof Peppy was lol.
I thought so, too!
I thought it would of tasted rank
When I were a lad, we had Canadian cheddar ! Cos it were strong n cheap. Maybe they called it racer, cos a a race is like a Marathon
Well that was very interesting Alanna..... I have to make some substantial savings, but don`t want to lose the quality..... Just goes to show that I more than likely wont have to.... Cheers for that info..... :-)) xxxx
In the UK - "Snickers" was once called "Marathon" .. hence "Racer" for the knock-off.
I get Embarrassed with like racer, seal bars things like that, I wonder if Alanna does?
Alanna, you do realise that some of the items you compared are actually the same product, but with different labels!! Many, if not most items sold in Aldi in the UK are actually made in Britain, not in Germany. So, Aldi v British is not really an accurate title. The video was fun, though, as are all your productions. You are certainly my favourite Kentish Ontarian! 😅
Some products are the same but pretty sure Cadbury’s and coke don’t make the cheap knock offs so your not correct.
@@kenvoysey8222 They almost certainly do. It's a misconception that the looky-likey product is the same as the big brand, it won't be, but it will be made for the customer to their recipe alongside their own products and generally from the same store of ingredients. If you visit a cake factory for example you'll see the Aldi, Lidl and Sainsbury's etc cakes being made alongside the brand.
@@Tom_CZcams_stole_my_handle lol ! Yes some companies make for multiple companies and sometimes are exactly the same ie biscuits. But if you think Cadbury make a lower grade chocolate for Aldi you have never worked in the industry. All Aldi products are tested to the same standards as others and focus on other savings to bring price cuts. They have less waste with a smaller range to stock allowing a wider range of product in a smaller store. Tesco etc have to factor in waste to the price hence they are more expensive. They just bully the market buying land to stop others having stores to compete. Where I grew up tesco tried to block a new store in an area with a small Morrisons and them just to keep sole market.
@@kenvoysey8222 You're putting words into my mouth. I never suggested the Aldi products were in anyway a lower quality. With a few exceptions I'm quite aware of who makes what for whom in most categories. Draw your own conclusion from that.
Great video Alanna!! Interesting that Aldis version of Snickers is called Racer...As many years ago Snickers were called Marathon [ a running RACE] in Britain!!!!
Interesting and fun!
WELCOME BACK - Did you have a nice time in Canada or did you get home sick?
I love your comparison videos. Oh sod it let's be honest I love all your videos. Some are educational some are amusing but every one is entertaining. We actually have more varieties of cheese than France. I am a bit of a cheese lover and I think Davidstow is so good it's almost sacrilege to serve it with pickle.
were have you been, i been looking all over for you and could only find old ones
I think its less a case of they 'dont even try' and more a case of 'they try super hard to copy as close as they can in a way thats not legally actionable"!
Fair! 😂
I remember trying Aldi choc bars about 5 years ago and they tasted so different and I really didn’t enjoy. However now they keep stuffing the branded ones with less quality stuff I think they are probably a more similar as I don’t really enjoy a Mars anymore.
Fun video! Will have to go pick up some knock off pot noodles and cola to try myself haha
Hugely enjoyed the video, Alanna, but c'mon... surely the curry Pot Noodle is the only one that matters?😉
Snickers originaly were called a Marathon Bar in the UK, I think internationaly they were renamed
My parents and thier frends enjoy telling me how they would cut up a Mars Bar into 4.... so everyone got a nicely sized part each!
Eating pot noodles blindfolded!!..... that's got to be a new sport😂
😅😅
7:39 your gonna make me adventure down to aldi just to get this magical cola 🤣I have to know if your crazy or not
Thanks Alanna. Wonder if any of them made in the same factory? Interesting allsorts 'meal' for you & Mr Naps to finish off after! 🙏🙏
I used too work in a factory that made cream cheese and dips, the Aldi foods were made there too
@@heatherhursell3721 St Ivel/Unigate dairies used to do the same with various brands years ago, the factory just put different labels on the yoghurt pots.
@@eze8970I used to work for St. Ivel in Chichester before they closed and, yes, you’re totally right!
@@johngreen6375 I've been there! Went there one day, saw all the trifles going along the automated production line, & wondered what 2 ladies were doing at the end - they were sprinkling chocolate chips by hand on the tops, as no one had designed a machine for that!
Shoulda done the cheeses, then dipped the better one in the pickles. Very fun vid.
Thanks for sharing.
Have a good Day 👍
fun fact i think racer is a play on marathon the TRUE name of snickers
On the Pot Noodle you will probably find Golden Wonder make them for Aldi as well...But just put a different label on!
I love how you apologise for dropping food on the floor - we can't see it and we're not cleaning it up! 😂
I too found that very amusing... ☺
Great vid. If you like your cheddar then try the Cornish Crackler at M&S. It comes in a black packet. At Christmas (maybe all the time at a big M&S food hall but I only have small one local to me) they sell a 5 year aged version in a gold packet which is the stuff of dreams.
Great concept, great video. Has anyone ever done a battle of the knockoffs and pitted Aldi vs Lidl (vs the original)?
Great idea!
Yes ! Just they do it better not just shoving the food in without a palate cleanser. That would be why so many tasted the same and using your fav cheese is hardly fair.
@@kenvoysey8222it's only a bit of fun not to be taken seriously.🙂
@@dave_h_8742 if your going to do a job best todo it correctly ! The fact she still thinks Cadbury is British shows how little knowledge about the UK she had.
Great vid
I always wondered about Americans talking about preserving stuff in glass jars calling it "canning" but Alanna called the pickle jar a can so Canadians do it too!😁
Canning is actually the name of the process. We refer to a tin can, ie a can made from 'tin', the can can equally be made from glass.
@@Tom_CZcams_stole_my_handleisn't a glass can a jar?
@@jackchatham3947 Yes, but the contents have been canned.
We say bottling 😊
You're brilliant. You make me feel.proud to be British lol I personally want to go canada. Happy you've loved moving here. Kent is nice...I'm one up in Essex. Keep up the good work 😊
I am happy you refer to the UK not just England. i occasionally pop into you videos.
Havent watched one of your vids in a long while... Your Canadian accent is fading
Good thing you went out for a run or walk (I don't remember what you said you did) after this. Gotta get that gag reflex churning lol
Jogging after that lot 😮 🤢
Pickles are always, always, best home-made. I won't buy commercially prepared pickles and I loathe Branston with a passion. My home-made Apple & Date chutney is similar in texture but thicker and with a deep, out-of-this-world flavour. Eating Branston is like eating a frankfurter compared to sirloin steak; it's like swigging coke instead of Moet & Chandon.
I am reminded of all the weird food warnings, like "may contain nuts" on a bag of nuts (peanuts aren't nuts, incidentally). A comedian once pointed out "Pot Noodle. Not to be taken internally!" 😂
May contain nuts is a health issue as the factory making any product has to be made in isolation any nut.
There's always one ^^
Tell people with nut allergies your peanut comment !
@@kenvoysey8222 every day's a school day. Peanuts are legumes not nuts. You can be allergic to nuts and not peanuts and vice versa. That's why they are listed as separate allergies.
@@hairyairey the list of allergies is endless but most with an allergy will include both. A strawberry is not a berry etc etc !
13:16 Cheers ears top left on screen 😅 So British 😅❤
Great video. I am also an ALDI shopper but don't try too many of the obvious 'knock-offs'. Their Meat/Fish/Cheese/bakery are first class.

@@primalengland Peter says it as “Row lah Co laah” which makes THAT even funnier - because it’s that “Nertherrn accent” that does it 😉 (says me, a softy Lunndun suvnah - us lot saying it - wouldn’t be even funny 🥴😣)

Did you enjoy your Trip back to Canada 🇨🇦. Nice to see you Back in your 2nd home .1st in my opinion I believe in CANZUK. .
It’s pronounced “David’s toe”, because David rubs his feet on every block of cheese before packing.
🤣
Alanna is earning money eating cheese !!! She is living her best life :)
Thanks for the laughs Alanna, that was great😂. I'm a lidl shopper but that's purely for geographical reasons.
Thank you! ☺️
I've got both on either sides of a main road prefer Lidl too don't know why but i do. Maybe it's the ( Portuguese knock off ) custards 😍
@@dave_h_8742 That's a good enough reason.
Excellent!
'The United Kingdom, a place of cheese' should be our national tag line
Interesting watch. I love the racer vs snickers. Still annoyed they're not Marathon. Not as much as my dad who loved Marathon and refused to eat them when they changed the name 40 off years ago as he said Snickers sounded too much like knickers. 😂
I don't think we have Aldi in Croatia but we do have Lidl and I do most of my shopping there. Some things are poor quality like their bread and their cornflakes but a lot of it is good. I can't get anything remotely like Branston here and it is one of the products I miss the most.
Most Aldi foods sold in the UK are made in the UK.
Usually the same factories as other supermarket own brands.
In Australia the person who cane up with the Magnum ice cream rated the Utopia by ALDI far Superior than his own creation
What you should do is a full taste test with foods that you don’t use all the time (branded own brands v unbranded)
You could buy a few different brands (eg Heinz beans v Asda v Sainsbury’s v Tesco v Aldi/Lidl v basics)
Alanna, what are your favourite cost-cutting methods? E.g. do you make British meals from leftovers e.g. Bubble & Squeak or do you batch cook meals?
No citizenship until you 100% embrace marmite.
Aldi do a knock off version, that should be your final big boss taste test lol 😋
Davidstow Vintage cheddar will blow your socks off, and it's available in Aldi. 😉
Funny vid. You should of got the red label pickle the green one is diff so not a proper compare , not that it matters , if your on a budget like most are you'd get use to it 😊😉
I always get sainsbury's Jaffa Cakes and Cherry Bakewells. They taste almost as good for half the price! Don't notice a difference after a while
My wife is the Jaffa Cake aficionado, her favourite is from Lidl.
Raspberry jafa cakes I found in Aldi were amazingly good, ate the pack but I was on a hike so needed the energy honest😂
Yes! Alanna you have legit created a proper Citizenship test 👌😂
Great stuff!
Yeah Branston is savory so the comparing with sweeter pickle was off
For the future, can you use the printed prices per 100g (3.5oz) for a proper comparison ?
Loving your confidence with ...cheese ...chocolate ...tortillas 🤔
"Racer" 😂 from back when Snickers were called Marathon, I guess
It would be interesting to know whether it's the sugar and salt content that make some products have richer flavour.
Since Aldi have become renown for producing better tasting copies of the well known brands, I think they're selling themselves short by using meaningless sub brands like Bramwells. Time for them to step up and be proud of who they are and what they do.
Its David'stow' as in toe or owe! Been sending that to my gorgeous g/f in the U.S. for years. She knows its the best, and the 18 month matured is even better! She has been maturing for longer than 18 months, and she is the tastiest in the world! ( and that is not a cheesy comment either! ) 😊😋🥰❤😎
I’m in the bath with a bottle of red. I’m ready to get out, then, hey ho, Alanna comes on and I have to pour another glass and top up the hot tap.
The Specially Selected West Country Vintage Cheddar 300g Strength 5-7 (7 is my fav) from Aldi is £2.99 has the taste and the crumbly texture very similar to Davidstow Extra Mature Crackler 320G which costs £4.40 in Tesco
I'm kinda sad we didn't get the joke from the penguin wrapper
I always get the joke….
My neighbour was a chemist who spent most of his working life designing pot noodle flavours and ingredients.
Can I thank you for telling me about the M&S Southern Style Chicken Breast Tenders as they're awesome.
So I wanted to return the favour by telling you about the best Cheddar Cheese you need to try also from Marks & Spencer the M&S Cornish Cruncher Extra Mature Cheddar Cheese. You won't regret it!
Hi Alanna, so interesting video, I was watching this one with great interest to see you take on Aldi food. So after watch this I was I’m going to Aldi tomorrow to get me some of those items. So Pot Noodles, the last time I tried Aldi’s brand of noodles, I gotta say I wasn’t impressed, oh no not for me thank you, but having seen your take on them, I was thinking maybe it time to try them, so I popped over to Westwood Cross Aldi ( I’m sure sure you know where this is Alanna) an bought me 4 of them purely on your recommendations and I gotta say you were spot on with the taste. They were so much better than the original. 👍
I hadn't noticed an Aldi near here, so I decided to look up the nearest branch: I'd have to go past 3 Sainsbury's, 2 Tescos, a Co-op and a Lidl (we used to have a Waitrose as well, until quite recently) to get there, so I don't think I'll bother. However, Lidl, of course, is quite similar and some of their knock-offs aren't bad...
Oh, and the "-stow" at the end of Davidstow should sound like the "stow" in "stow away" (in other words: it almost sounds like it means part of David's foot - "David's toe").
aldi is the only supermarket i shop at. top quality and decent prices. their knock offs are a wee bit cheeky but it sells i guess. excellent vid dude.
I can't wait for your verdict on M&S lamb shanks.
Tum-te-tum-te-tum.
Not clickbait.
No Siree goddamnnnnnn..,.
Would recommend the Aldi Colombian coffee as a decent swap for Taylor’s Lazy Sunday.
Vive actually have the best sugar free Dr. Pepper knock off going. It's called Professor Peppy 🤣 but it's so good
I hate to correct you about one of your favourite products, but the 'Stow' in 'Davidstow' is pronounced like the stow in 'stow it in the cargohold' or 'stowaway', to rhyme with 'Row, row, row your boat'.
Edited to add: If you really want to blend in as a Brit also get used to saying 'cad-brees' rather that 'cad-berry', but I know that the pronunciation difference and the addition of a possessive 's is more a variation between different countries in fairness (to us Brits the brand will always belong to Mr Cadbury and therefore always be a possesive noun). Davidstow is named after a specific village in Cornwall though, so that one can't be chalked up to the pronuncation being different in different countries.
I presume you were getting help here getting set up off camera, otherwise the blindfold is pointless. Good video though. Should have been sponsored - by Lidl! 😂
