This week I have another technique exercise for the left hand. This time we're looking at high speed - wide stretch lines so take things slowly!

Hope you enjoy the exercise. First video for a while after I had a pretty bad dose of flu! Back on track now though! See you all next week
I wish I were able to engage in this lesson but, I fear I have somehow contracted you flu, ergo I am going back to bed until I am human once again.
You get that flu at NAMM?
glad you're feeling better, boss
Busta Bass LoL!
@@bustabass9025 I don't think so. The kids had it when I got back. The jet lag probably knocked me out a bit so I was bad at fighting it off. My wife has escaped it. So far...
Another awesome lesson, and "just what the doctor ordered"...
I only have 10 or 20 minutes a day to sit down, and practice; so I feel like I get "more bang for the buck" with this type of excercise!
What’s brilliant about your lessons is that they can all be done at every level . Something for everyone to work on beginner to pro
amazing lesson, this is a real finger buster, thanks!
Thanks Mark, this is gonna help me a lot
another great one, Mark. Keep us stretching!
Great exercise. Hope you’re feeling better. I too have been sick.
Great practice
*Great* practice! Thank you Mark! Hope you are feeling better :)
Thank you
Hi Mark, recently subscribed and loving your lessons, vwould love you to do a simple funk groove with fills for all us beginner's! Thanks Mark.
Great video
Thanks a lot!)
I have to move my hand down in the first exercise. Not sure if it’s because my stretch needs improving. But I will keep trying. Thank you...this will help me immensely in building up speed 😊👍🏾
Hey Mark, you know this is a good idea because you play the first six tones of the major scale using the index finger position on the D and G strings, and what the student could do is to start out slow and say the alphabet of the key as they’re playing it, or, as an addendum, could be to do this .. on the way back down right before the end of the phrase, instead of playing the maj2 play the major seventh with the index figure finger behind the root, so you basically capture the whole scale in each key in the one position. You could also do the exact same stuff on the E and A strings using the same scales/position, only 2 frets lower down on the neck 👍.
PS. Glad you’re starting
to feel better !!!
My fingers are tired. Thanks Mark.
Mark I have been having trouble soloing and making bass riffs, they keep sounding repetitive and boring I was wondering if u could make a video helping me out
sounds like you were away on tour with "The Flu" :)
Mark, you have set me a fine task here! I am left handed but play right handed. You would think that my fretting hand would be very dexterous, as it is my dominant hand, but it is not that flexible. I struggle with "one finger per fret" and there is no way I could manage the Mr. Spock "Live long and prosper" salute! My fingers seem to be magnetically attracted to each other. However, I'm going to give this one a good try - it should be fun!
I'm sure there's a reason you're playing right handed, but why don't you play left-handed? The plucking hand probably has a more difficult job in keeping the rhythm than the fretting hand, which is mostly muscle memory.
Paul B Yeah Paul, I’m confused as well. As bluemonday said, why don’t you play left handed? Do you play baseball? Which hand do you throw with? Are you ambidextrous? Have you tried playing left handed? I would suggest that you give it a try.
Playing right handed began when I first tried my hand(s) at the classical guitar. I took lessons and my teacher told me that, as I had never played guitar before, I should go right handed as it would give me a wider option of guitars to choose from and that re-stringing a classical guitar for left handed playing was not as simple as it may appear. The bracing of the guitar top is designed for right hand stringing and the nut would need to be changed. It was not a problem for me, even though I am very left handed. He also pointed out that you don't get left handed pianos or trombones etc so why should a guitar be different?
We don't play baseball in the UK but I use my left hand for every thing. Interestingly I use my knife and fork as a right hander (knife in right hand and fork in the left - which I was made to do at school) but if I'm cutting something or spreading bread with butter, I use my left. Eating soup or a sweet course and the spoon is in my left hand.
It's not being left handed that is my problem it is that my fingers do not spread apart very far on either hand. I gave up the classical guitar because there were some times when I simply could not reach the notes I needed while holding down other notes. I started playing late in life (I'm now 68) so I don't think my fingers are going to work much better from here on! No matter, I develop my own style of playing and enjoy what I do.
@@paulb8587 You have a few years on me but not that many. When I was a kid I remember horror stories of parents forcing their kids to use their right hand because there was some supposed shame of being left-handed. I even think nuns did it in Catholic school although I am not positive about that. Anyway, it is nice that the world has grown up and there is no longer a stigma attached to being left-handed. I don't presume to know that this was what happened to you but your story brought back those memories. I was trained as a classical trumpet player when I was 9 and went to college as a music major. You know, I can not recall a left-handed trumpet or trombone although I do recall an excellent trumpet player in college who looked rather awkward the way he held the instrument - he was left-handed. Anyway, best of luck in your bass pursuits. It is the coolest instrument.
La isla Bonita and Papa don’t preach is a very good left hand exercise too
OMG! Will my fingers ever get as fast as your! How long does it take?
I've been playing over 30 years but I got my technique together in the first 3 or 4 years. Don't focus on finger speed though. That comes with time. You just want a good technical foundation. Then it's just putting in the hours.
