Pat was trained in musical theater and opera from an early age. Her voice was special, especially given her small frame. The very popular music video was directed by Bob Giraldi who also did "Beat It" and a number of other popular vids from that era (c. 1983). There was a lot of "group dancing" in vids from that particular time. .

Wife and I saw her twice a few years back. Her and her husband Neil Giraldo, her guitar player, have been together longer than we have and at the time they had been together 35 or 36 years.
It’s a true love too, because onstage they only have eyes for each other. He is criminally underrated as a guitar player too. They put on a great show and you should see them if at all possible.

My favorite song of hers is "Hell Is For Children". It showed just how stupid parents groups and the media can be. They tried to get it banned saying it was promoting Satanism to kids. Obviously they only read the title and never listened to the song because it's really about the horrors of child abuse. She wrote it after reading an article about a really bad case in the newspaper one day. Very powerful song with a very powerful performance by her.

Single greatest singer is impossible to name, but, in the rock genre Pat is top tier along with Ann Wilson (Heart), Janis Joplin (in a class by herself), Stevie Nicks, and Tins Turner.I will stop myself there. Great reaction y'all. Looking forward to more Pat Benatar.

  • @PatternSeeker...

Fun story: Back in 1975, before she became a rock singer, Pat Benatar was singing cabaret songs in a pub when she was approached by Harry Chapin. He wanted to hire her to perform in a futuristic rock musical he'd written. During rehearsals, he and others would come and compliment her singing, but then say, "You gotta rough it up a little." She finally got it. :)
Without Harry Chapin, Pat Benatar may never have become a rock star.
(Watch her tell the story in "A Tribute to Harry Chapin at Carnegie Hall" here on CZcams, starting around 24:18.)

I’ve recently start playing Bass again and this was the first song I started to learn. Such a nasty sounding bass line but it’s not intensely hard to play.
I was born in ‘89 so I missed the ‘80s greats like Pat and Cyndi but I jam out hard to their iconic feminine songs.
Edit: This song was in 13 Going on 30 with Jennifer Garner. That’s where I first heard it all those years back and why I picked it to learn on guitar.

Pat is the rock 'n' roll QUEEN! Others are great, too, but Pat ROCKS. The song wasn't written as part of a soundtrack, but it was used in a lot of shows, most famously in "13 Going on 30," starring Jennifer Garner. Pat did a ton of great songs, but one you probably won't hear about is *"I Want Out"* from her "Get Nervous" album. Saved my soul when I had to leave my husband. Also, I was from Long Island, like Pat, and we're around the same age. She and her husband, lead guitarist Neil Geraldo, are still touring.
Have loved her since the early 80s. *Go vote for her to be inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, FINALLY.* Long overdue.....More great Pat: *Shadows of the Night, Hit Me With Your Best Shot, My Clone Sleeps Alone, I Need A Lover Who Won't Drive Me Crazy, We Belong* -- the list is a long one.

The song wasnt featured on any 80s films that i’m aware of, other than 13 going on 30 (2004) and Small Soldiers (1998) which are both 15-20 years later. The reason you think it features on a movie is because….lots of 80s hits sounded cinematic or dramatic, its why its the most interesting decade for music, i’m glad to have grown up in the 80s.

The scene where Pat was in a bus she wasn't fantasizing. That was her leaving her home and going to NYC and heading into a life of a private dancer or a woman of the night.
But this song is more than just the typical romantic love between two lovers. The music video showed that the love between a father and daughter can be a battlefield because of the lack of understanding between them. I certainly can relate to the story line of this music video in terms of my relationship or lack of a relationship with my father.

    LIPSTICK LIES,
    SEX AS A WEAPON,
    & YOU BETTER RUN,
were some definitive Pat Benatar tracks from the decade that was the 8o's. Power, beauty and rock solid, you could always depend on Pat and guitarist/ husband, Neil Geraldo to bring their best with each album. This song was born in 1983, which a lot of songs shared DNA with the Michael Jackson sound as it was the most popular at the time. Songs like CARIBBEAN QUEEN by Billy Ocean, SWEAR by Sheena Easton, SHE BOP by Cyndi Lauper and others rode that wave. Now, how about ONE THING LEADS TO ANOTHER by the Fixx or MANIAC by Michael Sembello, which is from the movie FLASHDANCE.

Madonna said herself a long time ago - "I am not the best singer, I am not the best dancer, I am not the best entertainer - but I can do them all well." That is why her concerts were fantastic. She combined them all in a way that was always new and different and breaking some sort of norm. Yeah, in the 80s, most entertainers did start out in an effort to shock or sell sex or to push boundaries to get ahead. But in order to have staying power, they had to adapt and have talent to last. Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, etc. If they didn't, they flamed out quickly. Pat Benatar was someone who said she wouldn't play the game of shock and awe. She was a classically trained singer in opera - she and hubby Neil G. just trucked on based on the power of her golden pipes and his rocking guitar licks. They still have that power all this time later. Songs like Promises in the Dark, Hell is for Children, Heartbreaker, Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Treat Me Right are great places to start! I totally loved songs throughout her long career - fantastic singer and great role model.

Pat and her very talented guitarist-husband wrote a lot of songs about really important issues, like domestic abuse etc.
Thanks for acknowledging the difference between a singer with no FX, and players really playing instruments in real time, vs stuff programmed on computers or pre-built before a show. The former is like the latter with an added layer of considerable difficulty.

@@DashcamRiprock Now that you mention it, I now recall that was the song. When I saw the clip, I wondered how Pat's lyrics fit that part of the movie, but let it go. So thanks for the head's up. I'll edit my original comment.

Promises in the Dark! Then, Hell is for Children. This song does NOT showcase her voice. She was just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!! Definitely check those songs out before the ceremony.

The guy in the white shorts is a dancer. He has been in Michael Jackson's, and Lionel Richie's videos.

She has "Invincible" from the movie soundtrack "The Legend of Billie Jean" You two nailed it with the Michael Jackson Beat It connection. This video came out shortly after Beat It. Pat was enormous and why she's fallen off public awareness I don't understand. Her hits include: All Fired Up (my favorite), Hit Me With Your Best Shot, We Belong, Shadows Of The Night, Heartbreaker, Outlaw Blues, Invincible, Promises In The Dark, Anxiety (Get Nervous), One Love, We Live For Love, Hell Is For Children, Fire And Ice, My Clone Sleeps Alone, Treat Me Right, Le Bel Age, Wuthering Heights, Stop Using Sex As A Weapon, and Strawberry Wine.

I love Pat Benatar, and i saw her twice. she has a lot of really good songs.Looks and image have always mattered, but back in the day, before music was made on computers, if you wanted your songs to sound good, somebody had to play those instruments. Somebody had to play those guitars & bass & drums & keyboards, and they had to play perfectly through the whole song for it to sound professional, there was no copy & paste, and already made up drum beats, and stuff like that, and of course there was no auto-tune for vocals, its not that nobody has talent these days, but you can become a star without it, because the computers do all the work. Frankly I don't give a shit what computers can do, I'm impressed by people who can actually play an instrument or sing
