The American people stayed in a a country, they had no obligation to protect or build, for over 20 years. Attempting to teach them how to defend a dream none of them believed in. The US aren’t untrustworthy allies they just no when the game is lost.

Having now spent some time in Vietnam it is funny to read some of the commentary here. I believe US intervention in Vietnam was totally wrong. Like it or not, the Vietnamese have the right to choose their own type of government even if it is a bad one. After the war, Socialist Vietnam descended into decades of unrelenting poverty and economic stagnation. This has started to change as the government has loosened economic controls and allowed some private enterprises to exist. Today, I see ordinary Vietnamese wearing US flags on their shirts. Too many of the young people here the US is a country that is the definition of success. I suspect many of the commentators or consumed by envy and hate then any rational assessment.
