I saw the deleted scenes, for exaple with the first Nuclear Man and the figth that ensues between Superman and him.... it was BAD, REALLY [HORRIBLY] BAD, so bad that it made me grate ful the film was release how it was. Just take a look on Action Comics #1 and most early covers (and insides) of Superman featuring comics. Including Fleischer studio cartoons which were made after original Superman. Even Lois Lane was scared of him first time (not like in Superman The Movie, but for real) she met Supes in comics. Superman started same way as Batman, and went trough same softened phase (and then back into darker roots,in comics that is). The only difference is that first Superman movie was made after soft phase, while first Batman movie was made when character went back to darkness. But yeah, Chris predicted it right. More than that, I think if accident never happened, and if Donner got another try at making movie in 2000's, we'd get something like comics that he co-wrote with Geoff Johns Superman Last Son, which is a lot more similar to Snyder films than to his own.
I still can't get over the fact that parts of this movie were filmed in Milton Keynes. Its insane!!! Then a year after filming this Michael Cane and Pierce Brosnan turns up in M.K for the forth protocol and the famous tea room scene from Withnail and I is filmed down the road in Stony Stratford.
It’s hard not to feel for Ms. Kidder in this clip. She wasn’t sugarcoating anything here and in a lot of ways, she was right. Even during the “on-the-set” clip where Reeve is hugging her, she looks unhappy.
I think it would be good if they restored the relevant scenes and added updated special effects. Not all deleted scenes made it to the DVD special features.

Though I do like Margot Kidder's honest the whole 'women in Hollywood get old' attitude she is exhibiting does work. Since Superman: the movie, there has never been a real romantic relationship between Lois and Clark, more like a gawky older brother and the outspoken younger sister who tells him what to do (with the exception of her finding out his secret in part II). One of the aspects I liked in Superman III was the Clark/Lana relationship, somebody who saw Clark's kindness and decency and more attracted Clark than Superman.
That was a big mistake for true messing with the Lois and superman love story... Look at the incredible romantic ending of the Richard donnar version of superman 2..
It's funny listening to them talk about age 30 yrs ago, like 35 is old. Lois is like only a few yrs younger than superman. Christopher reeve thinking he's too old or getting too old, now all the superstar superheroes are starting in their 30s and into their 40s. RDJ was like 45 as iron man.. Ben affleck same age. Now RDJ like 55 and I don't see the problem. Perception has changed, especially in Hollywood. 50 is the new 30.
yes back in the 80s ppl in their 20s/30s were considered full adults and in their late 30s/40s middle aged etc. now ppl in their 20s are still considered pretty much as teens. and 30s is like the way point between childhood and adulthood. 40s is like ok you're an adult now..but not really if you don't wanna be lol. And regarding superman Reeve was only about 24 when he filmed Superman I and about 27 when he did II and about 30 when he did III but he is a complete 'adult' in all those.. in III hes almost like a 45y old in his mannerisms/demeanour etc (as you say RDJ is doing what he did in his late 40s). so by Superman IV hes almost like 'old man' Superman.. it was basically his 'Logan' lol
Chris was 34 and Margot was 38 when part 4 was filmed. A man with a love interest older than him at all is still pretty uncommon in movies. Gwyneth Paltrow is 7 years younger than RDJ. Mariel Hemingway is 9 years younger than Chris. Annette O'Toole, a.k.a. Lana in Superman 3, was just a few months older than Chris. I don't know what other mainstream movies are out there where the female romantic interest is several years older than the male. Lois and Clark in the Superman movies seem to be a rarity in that regard.

It was the Studio’s and other Producers fault not Reeve’s. He had a great idea for a Superman story about nuclear weapons, but it was unfortunately scr-wed over by Cannon Films.

For one thing we are presented a one sided argument that nuclear weapons are "SO EVIL" and need to be gotten rid of, yet we don't see any counterarguement that nuclear arsenal would actually help prevent possible wars OR extermination. In simple terms people or countries have no right to bare arms. Which is stupid because everyone has the right to bare arms so long as you don't screw around with each other. If you launch the first attack, you are automatically labeled the enemy and you will be dealt with. And another thing, Superman has no real reason to take part in this. In the story, Superman basically just turned into a totalitarian ruler when he announced FLAT OUT that he would take away everyone's nuclear arsenal. If Superman even felt like the world was a huge risk factor by doing this, the counter argument from all Earth would really be, well what the hell about you? You have the power of a God, and you could exterminate anyone at anytime? Imdb says his pay was $250,000 for the first movie, then $500,000 for the second, $1M for the 3rd and $6M for the last one. Even assuming these numbers to be correct, the total spread out over the 4 movies he made as Superman averages under $2M per picture. Now compare that with Brando's alledged $3,7M + 11,75% of the box office gross profits ($300M for the first movie if I'm not mistaken), and Christopher was basically paid peanuts as the actor who effectively carried the whole thing past the first 45 minutes or so of the first movie. So I'm gonna say I hope he did the 4th at least in part for the money, and wouldn't consider it greed; merely self-respect...
I hate to disagree with Margot, but she did not age as well as Christopher did at this point and indeed she DID look older than he did. I'm sure her chain smoking didn't help in that department.

Look up Margot Kidder’s TAB soda commercials from 1986. Same year Superman 4 was filmed. She’s absolutely gorgeous. The problem wasn’t Kidder. They filmmakers wanted Lois to look like a matronly sister in this, instead of the female romantic lead, so they styled her accordingly. Kidder looks gorgeous in every film she shot in 86 and 87. Superman IV is the only film where she looked like this.
don't see any problem with introducing a new love interest to freshen things up (abit like Bond) the lois/superman/clark love triangle story had been done in 2 movies and its not like lois was written out (like she was almost in III). and there was abit of it in IV anyway - Lois still sort of 'with' Superman and the flight scene (that probably should've been written out when the budget got halved), whereas Lacey wants Clark

RIP Margot Kidder but I must say the romance between Clark and Lois had been exhausted during the first and second movies and ended with Clark breaking it off. For them to go back down that road again and fall deeply in love again would have been anti-climatic. That's why Margot was barely in Superman 3. I don't think it was an age thing at all. I think it was a story decision....
Kidder's role in 3 was reduced as punishment for savage comments made about the stupidity of 3's storyline, her attitude towards the Salkinds after their dismissal of Richard Donner from 1, and she slept with Richard Pryor.

I think Chris should have stuck to his guns and not returned for this film given it was set up for failure from the start. The studio was in no position financially to produce the kind of action-packed superhero film this was supposed to be. In fact, they were going bankrupt and eventually folded before the end of the decade. As a kid, I enjoyed the battle sequences between Superman and Nuclearman. As an adult viewing it the movie comes off as a dorky cringe-fest. Chris was not given time to get in shape for the role. He appears underweight, with no muscle tone. Too thin to be Superman. As for Margot Kidder, it wasn't that she was too old physically to play the leading love interest. Years of abusing drugs and her turbulent life made her look far older than she actually was. In the end, Superman IV turned out to be nothing more than a quick payday for everyone involved and an embarrassment that essentially put the final nail in the coffin for the Superman franchise which was already in bad shape thanks to Superman III, which was a horrible Richard Pryor vehicle. The over the top comedy did not fit the tone established by Superman The Movie and Superman II. Superman IV would have worked had it been produced by a better studio with the money to pay for quality special effects, if key elements of the story had not been cut out, and if Chris had been given time to get in shape to play Superman.
You are 100% incorrect about Kidder’s looks at this point in her career. This movie was filmed in 1986. If you look up the movie “Vanishing Act” or Margot’s TAB soda commercials from 1986 had on youtube, all shot mere months before this, she is absolutely stunning. Like as gorgeous as Superman I, if not more so. Kidder looks great in everything she shot in 86/87, except Superman IV. They wanted Lois to be the matronly sister figure in this, versus playing up the Lois/Clark romance, and the make up, hair and styling reflect that.

Not true. He did it because he was given creative control, which was essentially the chance to direct and star in a film. But whatever he got it was more than the other actors because he was the star and he had story writing credit. The economic part - "MONEY - Let's be realistic" M.Kidder - was a bad choice. Part III should have endet. If you do something just and only for money - money shows his ugly face. That's what I have learned in the past years.

Comic books and newspaper comics have always deviated from reality to some degree. In addition, Superman was never completely within the Science Fiction genre. Like most things in the DC Comics Universe, every Superman story has always been ‘Fantasia meets Science Fiction’, similar to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

That happened, but it wasn’t on set. It was at the premier. He warned Cryer before the screening that it was going to be hot trash.

In all fairness, Christopher Reeve will always be my favorite Superman. There's no question about that. But if he was alive today, and if I was walking up to him face-to-face, there would only be one question I would want to ask him: "What the hell were you thinking with Superman IV?"
It was the Studio’s and other Producers fault not Reeve’s. He had a great idea for a Superman story about nuclear weapons, but it was unfortunately scr-wed over by Cannon Films.
@@randomericthings7506 Technical issues aside like special effects & budgeting is one thing, but the story itself has a lot of holes in it. For one thing we are presented a one sided argument that nuclear weapons are "SO EVIL" and need to be gotten rid of, yet we don't see any counterarguement that nuclear arsenal would actually help prevent possible wars OR extermination. In simple terms people or countries have no right to bare arms. Which is stupid because everyone has the right to bare arms so long as you don't screw around with each other. If you launch the first attack, you are automatically labeled the enemy and you will be dealt with.
And another thing, Superman has no real reason to take part in this. In the story, Superman basically just turned into a totalitarian ruler when he announced FLAT OUT that he would take away everyone's nuclear arsenal. He was not given consent from any country whatsoever. It's just called tough crap, I'm doing it anyway, and you can't stop me. If Superman even felt like the world was a huge risk factor by doing this, the counter argument from all Earth would really be, well what the hell about you? You have the power of a God, and you could exterminate anyone at anytime? If you wanna lecture us about being bad people, maybe you should either leave Earth or renounce your powers like you selfishly did for Lois, and look where that got you? On top of the fact that everyone in the UN is "okay" with him suddenly taking their nuclear arsenal? LMFAO!!!
I could almost be on the side of Lex Luthor when he says nobody wants war, that he just wants to keep the threat in light. But actually again a scene which was deleted would have been more plausible where Nuclear Man almost has both sides get ready to launch their nuclear weapons would have made slightly more sense, but Superman stops it from happening just in time. Still the point should be made more clearer that self ownership of the decisions we make play a huge role in deciding when to get into a war and when not to.
Superman IV is fine, especially after seeing that insulting abortion known as Man of Steel. By far, the absolute WORST Superman film.

Imdb says his pay was $250,000 for the first movie, then $500,000 for the second, $1M for the 3rd and $6M for the last one.
Even assuming these numbers to be correct, the total spread out over the 4 movies he made as Superman averages under $2M per picture.
Now compare that with Brando's alledged $3,7M + 11,75% of the box office gross profits ($300M for the first movie if I'm not mistaken), and Christopher was basically paid peanuts as the actor who effectively carried the whole thing past the first 45 minutes or so of the first movie.
So I'm gonna say I hope he did the 4th at least in part for the money, and wouldn't consider it greed; merely self-respect...

Look up Margot Kidder’s TAB soda commercials from 1986. Same year Superman 4 was filmed. She’s absolutely gorgeous. The problem wasn’t Kidder. They filmmakers wanted Lois to look like a matronly sister in this, instead of the female romantic lead, so they styled her accordingly. Kidder looks gorgeous in every film she shot in 86 and 87. Superman IV is the only film where she looked like this.
don't see any problem with introducing a new love interest to freshen things up (abit like Bond) the lois/superman/clark love triangle story had been done in 2 movies and its not like lois was written out (like she was almost in III). and there was abit of it in IV anyway - Lois still sort of 'with' Superman and the flight scene (that probably should've been written out when the budget got halved), whereas Lacey wants Clark

RIP Margot Kidder but I must say the romance between Clark and Lois had been exhausted during the first and second movies and ended with Clark breaking it off. For them to go back down that road again and fall deeply in love again would have been anti-climatic. That's why Margot was barely in Superman 3. I don't think it was an age thing at all. I think it was a story decision....
Kidder's role in 3 was reduced as punishment for savage comments made about the stupidity of 3's storyline, her attitude towards the Salkinds after their dismissal of Richard Donner from 1, and she slept with Richard Pryor.

@@jedijones Storylines can be easily rewritten, and sometimes backup scripts are kept just in case. So they sent Lois on vacation. Kidder never held back on her opinions about the movies, as you can see in this interview.

I think Chris should have stuck to his guns and not returned for this film given it was set up for failure from the start. The studio was in no position financially to produce the kind of action-packed superhero film this was supposed to be. In fact, they were going bankrupt and eventually folded before the end of the decade. As a kid, I enjoyed the battle sequences between Superman and Nuclearman. As an adult viewing it the movie comes off as a dorky cringe-fest. Chris was not given time to get in shape for the role. He appears underweight, with no muscle tone. Too thin to be Superman.
As for Margot Kidder, it wasn't that she was too old physically to play the leading love interest. Years of abusing drugs and her turbulent life made her look far older than she actually was. In the end, Superman IV turned out to be nothing more than a quick payday for everyone involved and an embarrassment that essentially put the final nail in the coffin for the Superman franchise which was already in bad shape thanks to Superman III, which was a horrible Richard Pryor vehicle. The over the top comedy did not fit the tone established by Superman The Movie and Superman II.
Superman IV would have worked had it been produced by a better studio with the money to pay for quality special effects, if key elements of the story had not been cut out, and if Chris had been given time to get in shape to play Superman.
You are 100% incorrect about Kidder’s looks at this point in her career. This movie was filmed in 1986. If you look up the movie “Vanishing Act” or Margot’s TAB soda commercials from 1986 had on youtube, all shot mere months before this, she is absolutely stunning. Like as gorgeous as Superman I, if not more so. Kidder looks great in everything she shot in 86/87, except Superman IV. They wanted Lois to be the matronly sister figure in this, versus playing up the Lois/Clark romance, and the make up, hair and styling reflect that.
@@jaquen1977 I don't think she would have let them use makeup and hairstyling to make her appear older and wiser. She was having a midlife crisis at this point and was confident that she did not look "old". It does not take long for drug abuse to wreck a person's physical appearance.
With that said, I believe what we saw of her in Superman IV was not an image created by makeup and hairstyling.

She knew that Chris and pretty much everyone involved with the project thought she was washed up and I think she was determined to prove them all wrong and in fact, cheating to make her look older would validate her point.

A fortune? The movie only had a $17 million budget, half of what it was supposed to be. If Reeve was paid a lot, that didn't leave much for anything else.
Not true. He did it because he was given creative control, which was essentially the chance to direct and star in a film. He was becoming interested in directing by this point in his life and this was an opportunity for him to test himself. Yes getting a check was nice but he would not have got on board if he was not given creative control.
As for Margot, she was bitter, jealous of Mariel Hemingway, and suffering from a mid-life crisis. This was not the first time she bit the hand that was feeding her.

But whatever he got it was more than the other actors because he was the star and he had story writing credit. The final box office take was 36.7 million so he probably got an additional check from that.

Christopher Reeve took himself and his portrayal of Superman way too seriously. At the end of the day, Superman is a fictional character in a fictional universe. You mean that Superman, the comic book character, appears ‘campy’ to audiences? You don’t say! Just look at the original meaning of the word ‘comic’. Comic books and newspaper comics have always deviated from reality to some degree. In addition, Superman was never completely within the Science Fiction genre. Like most things in the DC Comics Universe, every Superman story has always been ‘Fantasia meets Science Fiction’, similar to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
