Stam Fine Reviews looks at the 1987 film Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.
Starring Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman, Mariel Hemingway, and Margot Kidder; Superman IV is, in a word, yikes!
The film series' original producers offloaded the film rights to Cannon who made what turned out to be the last movie to star Reeve, who in turn wanted a specific storyline in order to appear as the Man of Steel. Budget cuts turned this into a, well, have a look.

Went to see it with friends in the theater, so would have been 13 or 14. It started off with an ominous scene on a playground with a plane flying over. Then it cut off, and we had to change theaters as they had the labels switched between Superman and La Bamba. Even at that age we realized pretty quickly we should have stayed.

You're a tiny bit nicer to this than everybody else who covers it, so kudos for being different. I also kind of liked Gene Hackman's and Jon Cryer's chemistry. Too bad they never teamed up in anything else.
The comics adaptation (which sticks closer to the original concept and doesn't have to worry about having its budget slashed) is actually a good sight better. Superman IV was probably never going to be a "good" movie, but it didn't have to be the disaster it was.

Milton Keynes was, and still is, good for ground level and interior scenes. It does fail with the fact that the buildings in Milton Keynes were low level (at the time there was a hight restriction on buildings). There were no skyscrapers, something that Metropolis is know for.
It shows in some scenes with Superman flying off or landing. You see too much sky.

Its heart is in the right place, conceptually. Reeve hated the comedy of parts 2 and 3 and only agreed to coming back for a 4th on the proviso he could use it as a platform for a very serious issue he wanted to address, the arms race and nuclear disarmament. Unfortunately the productiom was a nightmare and the budget was tiny, so it suffered the same fate as dozens of sequels and killed the franchise.

That way instead of taking Lacy into space for no reason he could be taking her to Bizarro World and the third act would take place there. Then we could tie it into the themes of the movie by having Superman discover that the people of Bizarro World are not evil just misunderstood and teach Bizarro how to lead them in a more peaceful direction.

    • @dhenderson1810
      @dhenderson1810 Před rokem

@@arcadeassassin7176 I think the Bizarro world idea would have been great.
But it wouldn't have happened because were making this on the cheap.
Cannon were notorious for buying franchise movies and spending little on the budget,
They spread the equivalent of one movie's budget, and spread it across three films ("Superman IV", "Masters Of The Universe", and a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie called "Cyborg", with the majority of the budget going to MOTU).
They did this to make maximum profits off tent pole movies and stars, without too much outlay.
Of course all three movies flopped, and Cannon folded as a result.
So I can't see Cannon spending more money to build a Bizarro World set.

  • @tristandunn4628

The Salkinds totally mismanaged the whole franchise. Not letting Richard Donner finish Superman II was the first mistake. Richard Lester made that a lot cheesier that it should have been. Donner's work saved that from being the dreadful mess that a 100% Richard Lester mess is (see Superman III). Getting rid of the whole franchise for part IV was an opportunity to reverse that. However, totally the wrong company got hold of it and just kept hammering the nails into the coffin. Learning how this whole project was doomed before it started is tragic. Christopher Reeve was totally screwed over with this. It's interesting how TV shows (Lois & Clark, Smallville and Superman & Lois) can get it right, yet the movie industry seems to find it so hard.

    • @RoaryUK

The Donner cut of Superman 2 is awful for the most part, what Lester did with it was campy in places, but what some conveniently forget is that Donner had plenty of campy stuff in his version too. Some changes Lester did really made a difference too, like replacing Brando with York that makes far more sense to Supermans return, which was ridiculous in the Donner cut, while the ending to that version was just as bad for a number of reasons.

Im really happy that cannon films went bankrupt and Golem and Globus the owners lost everything possibly. Because they really cheated the fans by taking half of the movies 34 million dollar budget which they were GIVEN by Warner bros to make superman 4 and spent it on another film they were making at the same time (masters of the universe), just so they could make more of a profit. So this film only had 17 million spent on it instead of the full budget. I think if it had the full amount of 34 million spent on getting the best writers, best FX teams, real locations ect, it could have been one of the best because of Christopher Reeves enthusiasm for the project because they promised him he could have some creative input into the film. But pure greed of those two cousins cheated the cast and the fans.

I honestly think this film is at least trying to attempt a worth while story, as opposed to the third film, which seems to be just throwing stuff at the screen. Yes, it's dispiriting......but at least it failed trying to do something. What is 'Superman III' about?

I'm not questioning Cavill as an actor. In fact, I would love to see him as the next James Bond. Firstly, because he could carry off the role, and secondly, WB could scrap the DCEU and focus on superhero movies that DO make them big money (Dark Knight trilogy, Joker, The Batman).

I think he could have easily fit in Donner's films. As for Cavill as Bond, he would be a good candidate but he's getting up there in years. If they pick him, he would probably be done by his third film. They really should have retired Craig after Skyfall.

I was almost 20 when this movie came out and it's a poster child form why certain movies shouldn't address complicated political issues. It really should have ended when the kid's classmates laughed at him for the idea because it's a childish premise. It pretty much ignored that Superman set himself up as dictator of Earth. What happens when he decides there's another issue he can "solve"?

As disappointing as IV is, a bad Chris Reeve Superman movie is still more enjoyable than a modern box office hit grim Superman. The closest (though still not the same) I've seen to capturing that Reeve's aura as Superman has been Brandon Routh reprising him for TV's Crisis on Infinite Earth's multiparter. Close enough in fact to almost make me feel like I was back the day.

I went to see Superman IV in the theater. What a disappointment. When the scene showing superman gathering nuclear warheads in space to throw out to interstellar space came, my sister & I looked at each other and laughed out loud. So did the audience. Superman III was a burning wreck descending from the sky and Superman IV was the fiery crash ending. I feel sad that Christopher Reeve & Gene Hackman had to go out this way.
