Stam Fine Reviews hits the first Bond film of the 21st Century. Die Another Day was Pierce Brosnan's fourth turn as James Bond 007, a film that was as massively successful as it is now critically derided. Also Stars Halle Berry, Toby Stephens, Rosamund Pike, Rick Yune, Judi Dench, John Cleese.

I remember seeing this at the Cinema upon release. And in fairness the pre title sequence and let's say Bonds incarceration, hand over & subsequent escape did up the ante for a more edgier Bond & something for Brosnan to sink his teeth into. Then after the hotel sequence it totally jumped the Shark & morphed into an entirely different movie. And the shift in gears was jarring. Suffice to say I still have a soft spot for the crashing plane sequence at the end. Spot on review as always. Keep em coming.

Absolutely agree! The pre title and Bond being swapped in the demilitarized zone etc was not only brilliant but this could have been the best 007 movie ever. But then it went to complete crap, which is what I find frustrating about this film.

The tonal inconsistency is baffling. In one corner you have Bond being tortured in North Korea for 14 months, an ice cold head of Mi6, a rogue agent pursuing a terrorist, and even a subtle reference to 9/11. Then in the opposite corner, "DNA replacement", ice palace, giant diamond laser in space, an invisible Aston Martin, and a rip off of the Holodeck from Star Trek. At the very least, the writers and producers should have aimed for something in the middle.

Absolutely bang on, in respect to this film not ageing well. Casino Royale, a few years later, felt like a breath of fresh air by comparison. Sadly, the Craig era ended with a little "shark jumping" of its own.
No idea where the producers go from here, but once again, they would do well to get back to getting the basics right.

Was No Time To Die really an example of Shark Jumping though? Certainly biowarfare (considering that we have just moved on from COVID) seems more realistic than using the Sun as a Giant Weapon.
In fact, the bigger problem with NTTD is how undeveloped the antagonist actually is.

The one thing I did like was that there was a through line from the pre-credits scene, the credits covering his months of torture, and then flowing into his escape and the rest of the movie. Yes, a shame Madonna had to have a cameo, but it was a short one. Regarding Jinx, I remember an interview with either Halley Berry or Samuel L Jackson, where Samuel L Jackson said her character name should have been Cinnamon Buns, LOLs. Personally I think Pierce Brosnan had another 007 movie in him (maybe if the Remington Steele producers hadn't been such shits when he was first up for the role, we might have got one).

Look, a gritty James Bond that's in keeping with the novels is all well and good, but I can't help feeling that the James Bond film series lost something after this one. Audiences had a very clear picture in their heads about what to expect when going in to a James Bond movie, and really, Die Another Day really was the last time we got a 'James Bond movie' in that sense. Some people might claim that they couldn't keep making Bond movies with cheese, nonsense stunts, and over the top villains with massive planet destroying lasers after Austin Powers had thoroughly skewered those elements. But all of that was what audiences expected from James Bond. I enjoyed Casino Royale, but quickly tapered off the Craig movies, and I don't think I've even seen them all. Because the essence of a James Bond movie is entirely missing from them. In the cold light of 2023, I think what audiences would respond favorably to would be a wholehearted return to this kind of James Bond. Quippy, able to hold his own, an unashamed womanizer who women actually want, battling against over the top cartoon villainy using improbable gadgets and not breaking a sweat while doing it. That's what 'movie James Bond' is. Embrace it.

I liked the story, the opening title theme, the evil Bond Girl...there's a lot to love in this film...if only Halle had bought it in the end during the sword fight. "Jinx" in every sense of the word. She had as much business being in this movie as she did playing Catwoman.

Brosnan was saddled with scripts written by committees, weak villains, and producers who either stage managed good directors or hired crap ones. He desperately lobbied to get the producers to buy hte film rights to Casino Royale, to get some meat into the role, but was denied, in favor of ridiculous product placement, pointless stunts that don't advance the plot, bad CGI, and a lot of actors who took the cash and wanted to be in a better film. However, the point I knew this one was bad was just after the opening credits. the point where I knew it was the worst POS in the entire series (including View to a Kill) was when Graves parachutes in, to the sounds of the Clash, selling out. What was even sadder was that they did the same for Jaguar ads. Yes, there is nothing more punk than allowing your songs to be used to sell Upper Class spies and luxury cars. Phony Beatlemania may have bitten the dust, but phony White Riot was choking on irony.

The Brosnan years of Bond is a reflection of what happens to all major franchises, it becomes too iconic for it's own good. Producers fear new ideas so they only make regurgitations of the past material. Yet on the other hand, I am starting to sort of pine for these years because these days, the producers seem to actually fear what this series once was.

And not jus because we were sat right at the very front and my neck hurt afterwards (as did my eyes from watching some trash). Some Daniel Craig films have come very close to taking the title, but DAD still reigns supreme in the shit list.

I'll be honest, I've probably seen the Halle Berry sex scene roughly 20 times more than the single time I saw the entire film. I was one and done. I was never a Pierce Brosnan fan and this was the worst of the James Bond junior high school boy theatre. Bond has dabbled in science fiction before - I mean, look at Moonraker. But even that had some suspenseful scenes. Suspense is all but dead in movies in general, and in Bond films in particular. I have my criticisms of the Craig era, but this was the worst 007 film for me. Diamonds Are Forever and A View To A Kill had editing issues and Die Another Day is a better made film than those ones, but the script is the worst of the series, particularly the dialogue. Did they just pick a random 13 year old boy and have him write this? Invisible cars, VR sex fantasies and general cringe abound. People complain about Bond dying, but they must just be the Zoomer and Millennial Marvel bunch. This is the movie that almost killed my fandom. At least we got Casino Royale 4 years later.

I think Bond being killed is really offensive. I think it's more aggravating than anything in Die Another Day. At least this film has some respect for James Bond. These last two Bond movies tell me that the producers really don't care about 007 anymore.
