One interesting note: take a look at the colors when they the bedsheet and the cheap shower courtain. They have a slight purplish blueish tint character to it.
And when you check the bleached muslin, there’s a much more balanced color of light, being the explanation of why it’s used in professional sets.
    Amazing video, really

Many white sheets (and vinyl curtains) use a blueing agent that makes them appear 'ultra-white', and helps delay the inevitable UV yellowing that naturally occurs. As long as you account for that when white balancing, it will look okay on camera.

I'm using black voile as an ND alternative, you can't really shoot through it but its great if hung or taped outside a window to drop the exposure level if you are lighting with natural light. I also use black and charcoal grey shower curtains as negative fill or to completely block out a window or to flag light spill. Thanks for the awesome content!

Watched so many videos about softbox and etc. This is the only video that touched on the difference between the diffusion materials from two worlds, photography and film making. It would be nice to have a side by side comparison of the natural light and other diffused light, and point out what exactly you are looking for or what you don't like to see, and in the end a quick summary. For instance, my takeaway from this video is the diffusion material also matters. Before I stumbled on this video, I thought the size of the diffusion was the only thing matters, since pros must have figured out the best material long time before.

Honestly, I've been shooting a video every day since the beginning of the pandemic, and my go-to method for softening lights has been to blast them against walls and ceilings. I've been experimenting each day with my positioning vs the spot the light hits and how far the light is from the wall or ceiling it's pointed at.
I seem to have the best luck in rooms with higher, vaulted ceilings, which put the light source at a similar angle to what you'd typically aim for with more traditional lighting styles.
Great video! I'm probably gonna go buy a shower liner now 😂

For corporate interview shoots, a 3x4' softbox with internal/external diffusion and grid (if I'm going for spill control). It's very quick to setup, easy to direct, and doesn't take up too much space when set at the typical height just over the talent's head. Having a grid is crucial if I'm in a white-walled room, or limited space. 42" umbrella is quicker, but spills too wide. Octobox took too long to setup, but was more flattering in terms of catchlights. When spill isn't an issue, go big for beauty, 4x4 book light or larger if I'm working with an assist.

I like Rosco or Lee 1 stop diffusion and will often do multiple layers of it. In a quick pinch, I'll tent it loosely over a panel with masking tape. Will also blast HMI, tungsten or LED through a ScrimJim with 1 or 2 stop diffusion. I've even used white tee shirts directly over strobe heads for 2 reasons. Depending on the thickness, it can act as neutral density to take stop off and add softness. Various frosts are good too if the skin is young enough to take it.
Aesthetically, the most flattering professional diffusion is Elinchrom's. Chimera is 2nd. Love unbleached mus too. I shoot beauty ads mostly for what it's worth.

Nothing sucks worse than spending a fortune on a piece of gear that works half-assed, It's a real motivation killer. The one thing I did stumble on that looks killer is to use a well diffused cool blue white (5500k) for the keylight and a warm background (3200k) or an light orange gel on a bounce for the fill. The more corporate projects I take on the more I appreciate ease of setup and speed. Modern's stuff is great, I love setting up large frames, but the speed and ease of using something like the Aputure lantern just works so well for those small office spaces. The inclusion of a skirt is icing on the cake for spill control.
My favorite diffusion though is Half Soft Frost. Basically similar to a frosted shower curtain. It doesn't eat much light output and is perfect for diffusing bright light sources like the sun outdoors without looking too shaded.
