      I'd go so far as to say "If you downloaded and played AM2R you need to buy Samus Returns". The games may be different enough for someone to say one is better than the other, but Nintendo needs to hear Samus Returns checks all the boxes we want in a Metroid game. Also, don't violate trademark and copyright laws so frivolously. Either fight to change copyright law, or suck it up and accept Nintendo has all the control over Metroid- and then play exploration games that don't violate either law like Axiom Verge.

You were on someone else's script because of the x parasite, but once you start powering up you go off script, to the point that you go and unlock a security level without authorization and basically you have your agency taken away early on, but slowly you begin to take it back. • @legionbeast

      Indeed. Many folks have championed the idea of a Metroid Spin Off where you play as perhaps a elite team of troopers (around 4 ALA Left 4 Dead) during the Phazon war during Prime 3 and pick up the slack while occasionally crossing paths with Samus who curbstomps whatever is in her way at the time, which may have been a full on boss for your team previously. Moments like that are in Fed Force, but as said, the franchise was in limbo and possibly due to be killed and the chibi aesthetics and soccer game didn't help these matters. Throw in a storyline that makes no sense (how did they capture samus if samus is one shotting everything?) and it really was not in the right place or right time.

      I still think Federation Force was pretty good. Nerrel judging it in terms of it being "the next Metroid" seems confused at best, but I think that explains a lot of the reaction to the game. People wanted the next Metroid, and Federation Force was a mission-based co-op multiplayer spinoff. It's explicitly *not* the next Metroid. Nintendo didn't read the room. It's not a true Metroid game, but Mario Kart 7 isn't a true Mario game either. The difference is that if you wanted a true Mario game, they were still coming out left and right, whereas Metroid was kind of AWOL at this point.
      If you go into Federation Force without expecting it to be "the next Metroid," it's an entertaining mission-based co-op multiplayer Metroid spinoff. That it doesn't hit the hallmarks of what a real, mainline Metroid game should be is irrelevant, because it's not trying to be one of those. Other M was a failure because it was *supposed* to be a real Metroid game and failed in most of the meaningful ways. Federation Force was a failure because people *wanted* it to be a real Metroid game but it was just a spinoff.

    I'm playing through super metroid for my first time currently. I felt so insanely smart when I figured out you could use the grapple beam to kill that boss, and it was almost a pure mistake. I saw there were guns on the side, figured I'd deal with the smallest problem first, so I blew them up. Then I got picked up and thought it was weird how long it held on to me, so I assumed I should do something. I happened to be hovering just in front of one of the guns I'd blown up and the spark from it reminded me of the grapple beam, so I did a hail mary and grappled on to it. Proposition: A romhack/remake of Other M, where you have to balance obeying and disobeying Adam's commands. Like, disobeying Adam allows some degree of sequence breaking, introduces new lore/gear, and uncovers government secrets and conspiracies, but if you do it too much, or uncover the "wrong" secrets, Adam may start working against you, leading to him possibly setting off a self-destruct at any point in the game. Conversely, if you uncover secrets that he himself didn't know and is interested in, he will back off and give you more leeway, and may start actively assisting you. Depending on the story route you uncover, it can become extremely meta and break the Fourth Wall, to the point where one ending is Samus and Adam deciding to blow up the ship do they don't have to live and die for your amusement anymore.

      @zacharybierstedt1423 Před 5 lety +17

      I recently played Fusion, and the ambience of the game is on point. Zero Mission feels desolate as you explore ruins, Super Metroid is a bit claustrophobic but highly immersive with detailed environments that are memorable and engaging, and Fusion is downright creepy, with the limits of screen, the sound design, and the hinting at future bosses (X-Ridley, the Nightmare screaming around ARC for 2 or 3 visits before you deal with it, etc) making me jump at even normal enemies appearing from offscreen. The SA-X in particular brings dread like I rarely feel in games. It helps that Fusion is also hard as nails, though in part simply because everything hits like a truck.

    Think back to when Halo and Metroid Prime were released.
    The first one is an action shooter that charmed everyone with its fast-paced gameplay and many other games tried to replicate the formula while Prime decided to take it easy and add mechanics that even today are used within modern games.

In the game, Sakamoto had a lot of control over the voice acting of the localization process, so even though he couldn't speak much English, he wanted Samus to sound like she did in Japanese. In Japan, someone with a flat monotone voice is considered a badass and/or a mature adult who has control over their emotions. So, when he told Samus' voice actor to talk like she had a lobotomy, he thought he was making her sound cool.

    there's nothing wrong with having a story, prime 2 and 3 had dialogue boxes, and 3 had a lil conversation stuff, and It wasn't detremental. It's just that the story in other M just actually takes away from the feeling of the character in the exact same way the gameplay does. If the gameplay was open in exploration, and the cutscenes were out of the way and not interfereing and didn't create busy work for the player, they would still come off as grating as they are still the reason behind you having to wait to unlock your powers and it builds this demeaning attitude towards your commander and even samus. Honestly It's not that metorid doesn't need a story to do well, it's that It has to know when to get out of the way, and not to drag on, and when not to make the player feel like an underling. Sure you don't NEED a good story for metroid, but having one isn't a death sentence, it's if you manage to make it work. Story should be minimal and similar to how prime games or fusion games. a good chunk of knowledge should be optional and implied but if you want character interactions you can do that, and they can be brief when they need to be. But they could bookend story beats between areas ONE time when you get to a new location, and not force the player to meander around for Adam. I think that because other M failed on *all* counts it turned people off from this stuff, much how nintendo didn't get the issue with gameplay and focused on removing story, but in the opposite way as well.

    How Nintendo could've used Other M's narrative driven purpose and story and made it into possibly one of the BEST Metroid games in my opinion:
    1. We know from Metroid Fusion that Adam must die in order for this game to make any chronological sense right? Well, if you are to keep Adam's role the same as Samus' navigator, that's fine... BUT, Nintendo could have used this as a massive plot and game design devise in itself by removing that ability part way through the game where perhaps Adam is either killed or kidnapped early on to allow the player freedom of movement entirely whilst also creating an uneasy atmosphere. Think about it, up to that point, you'd have your hand held, be given tips and tricks to look out for, but removing that ability after say the 2nd boss would add a very similar tension to Super Metroid upon landing on Zebes the first time; the player is now under complete control, and they must figure out what to do on their own - Navigation rooms have been hacked and perhaps can only give you suggestions on where to go with no actual map markers.
    Why is this a good idea?:
    To me, regardless of the improvements to gameplay this has? This also fits it's narrative role 10X BETTER than what we actually got. It fleshed Samus out as a character and achieves what Retro Studios did with her by allowing us to be molded with her. It also gives more purpose and perhaps more options to take the side story mystery that was oddly dropped mid game: a man who goes by the name - 'the deletor' (if I'm remembering correctly). Which brings me on to point number 2...
    2. Using the Deletor as a secondary antagonist was not a problem in my opinion. It's something new Metroid hasn't delved into much. Yes, we've had characters impede our progress before in prior Metroid titles, but non as calculated, and meticulously as Other M's mysterious secondary villain. The character had two problems for me. First of all, the character got forgotten later on, and two, he didn't do anything massively impactful to be realised as a massive threat to SAMUS' MISSION. Yes, he sabotaged the team on numerous occasions and killed them, but Samus was still more than capable to handle him. Instead have him perhaps kidnap Adam and be the plot device needed to GROW Samus as a character into what we know and love.
    Why is this important?
    Metroid, as a franchise often features some of Nintendo's darkest themes which play on the atmosphere a lot. If you're trying to build atmosphere whilst still being a Metroid title, this is how it's done! Not by going into obligatory investigatory segments where you can't shoot... POINT 3!
    3. A lot of the mechanics are gimmicky, unneccesaary and sometimes downright pointless or annoying. The core gameplay of this game is really fun imo, but both the first person transition and the over the shoulder no shooting sequences are ridiculous. The side scrolling segments and core 3d dmc styled gameplay were both perfect how they were, the other two were simply immersion and gameplay destroying in my opinion.
    Why is this important?
    Forget Metroid for a second, games are not and never will be fun when developers put thematically useless portions or mechanics in them. These segments are stale and serve no intelligent purpose and are almost always stand ins for actual content! Ohhhhh baby they're useless... Speaking of babies...
    4. Samus' character was misinterpreted and butchered from the previous games particularly Fusion which it was heavily inspired by obviously (not super). The emphasis and relationship shown in Other M between her and the baby are PREFECT EXAMPLES of how the devs took a story element at base value without evaluating the purpose. Her relationship with Adam was also somewhat lacking of using the source material properly. You can try argue against this, but I swear blind, Metroid Fusion was their source material for her relationship with Adam and Baby Metroid as the game gives you plenty of exposition on both through the ADAM computer and the Metroids helping against the SA-X being meaningful to her. NO, Samus' voice actor was not the problem, her tone was believable to me tbh. Her script however was a massive problem as was her character's pathetic progression throughout the game.
    Why this is important?:
    If a game is story focused? You need a strong protagonist AND IF IT'S AN ESTABLISHED FRANCHISE AND YOU'RE FOLLOWING THE STORY OF THE FRANCHISE, YOU NEED TO FOLLOW THE DAMN SOURCE MATERIAL! Other M is not a reboot which is why this is all essential to me.
    That's my 4 points I wanted to talk about. Lemme know if you think this'd make an interesting video and if happily convert this into a fully detailed video in the future ^^
    Thanks for reading tho and lemme know what you think and perhaps what else you think is thematically wrong with this game!
    Great video by the way

    The developers guiding players in Super Metroid is the best in any game I've ever played. The hidden e-tank in the room filled with the jumping leech guys is a perfect example. The developers expect you to jump and shoot in all directions, which uncovers a hidden energy tank in the ceiling. Brilliant.

      It probably would have been fine if released at a different time when the series was in better shape. The main point is that a spinoff that didn't reflect what Metroid is about was the absolute worst thing Nintendo could have put out at that moment.

      Chariot Goblin I’d say it’s slightly warranted since Nintendo must have been pretty out of touch with Metroid fans if they thought showing a game like that after not getting a new Metroid nearly six years after what was an otherwise disappointing entry in the series. People would’ve most likely been a lot more receptive to it if it was unveiled at E3 2017 along with Metroid Prime 4 and Metroid: Samus Returns instead.

    • @Spore_Spawn
      @Spore_Spawn Před 5 lety +9

      To me Federation Force feels like it was never ment to be part of the metroid series, but was overhauled and re-skinned mid way through development to make it fit the series mould. They either didn't under stand how Metroid worked, had a rushed development cycle, didn't give a shit and half assed it, or any combination of the three. In the end it was an ok hand held shooter, But a horrible excuse for a Metroid game.
