  • Machete defense. This came up the other day again so I thought I'd bring this video to the public page as it was done LIVE on our Members Only private page.
    Something to keep in mind...there's obviously much more training involved than this 5 minute video. The video also is predicated on the fact that folks understand our overhead stick defense and the importance of bursting in and of the simultaneous counter attack.
    EDIT: We thought it wasn't necessary to mention you've tried everything else to be safe and that you CAN'T run away for whatever reason. Apparently not. So to answer those in the comments that say 'run away'. Um....DUH.

    First rules of machete offense is to not let any part of your body get ahead of your blade, your partners leg is sticking out. This is unsound offense. My machete has a very sharp point so my first offense is not an overhand chop. An overhand attack would be used as a feint, and the attack would either be a lateral slash or straight thrust, either of which would be fatal! Best defense is run or pull a pistol!

    I have seen tons of videos about defence against knife/machete attack, and I have not yet come across one that can convince me that it works in real life situations, not even Bruce Lee’s barehanded defence against a blade attacker.
    Most videos still have the mentality using bare hands only, I came across a titled Thai boxer coach from a rough area and a head bouncer, they both claimed they would immediately pick up something to defend themselves, and I had to agree with them wholeheartedly.

    • @ColoradoKravMaga
      @ColoradoKravMaga  Před 3 lety +5

      You won't always have the time to pick something up is the issue so you need to have your hands and body trained to react. The overarching point is: Train hard and you'll be more prepared than if you didn't

      Ideally with a left handed attacker you would switch and use your right arm.
      But in reality, the angle of the attack carries more weight in deciding which arm to use to defend. For instance, a right handed attacker coming at your from your right side might necessitate a defense with your right arm if you're late and can't get your body turned to square off and use your left.

    How to defend if attacks by cross movements ! I meant right-left instead of up-down

    • @ColoradoKravMaga
      @ColoradoKravMaga  Před 6 lety +1

      Initial movement to keep from getting cut allows for only 2 options, be out of range or be inside the arc of the machete's swing/range. If you burst in initially, you'll have to use a blocking movement on the arm (not the machete of course) as opposed to a re-direction like the overhead attack in the video.
      If you are able to move out of range, but still close, you don't have the option of continuing to run backwards, since no one can run backwards fast enough to avoid a forward running attacker. So if you move out of range initially, you'll need to be prepared to move (burst) quickly back into very close range but using that blocking movement again as stated. We'll try to get another video up on that soon.

    • @ColoradoKravMaga
      @ColoradoKravMaga  Před 5 lety

      As I stated in the video here, you really only have 3 options: 1) Be out of range. 2) Be inside of the swing. 3) Get hit by the machete.
      I think we all agree #3 sucks.
      #1 can be accomplished but for how long? Moving backwards is never as fast as someone else moving forwards. Of course if you have time and distance you can always run away, and we NEVER advocate making a defense if you can actually run away first. Not to mention, if you are out of range and run away, there is no defense to be made.
      So #2 is the answer to your question. We'll try to post a video on this in the near future.

Also their is no magic pill any martial art or fighting technique that will guarantee you to be a immortal fighting machine, but at least you increase your chances to come out alive in a life or death situation. Rather be prepared than clueless an get hammered to death. An one thing no one can be 100% aware nobody is going to be paranoid after training thousands of hours. Ideally you should trap the weapon in your armpit, that is actually easy to do. The real issue is that your opponent still has a solid base and good center of gravity. If you use this method I would try to stop that ankle in so I could get him to the ground. It might be better to make him miss the and trap the weapon to you opponents body.

    • @ColoradoKravMaga
      @ColoradoKravMaga  Před 7 lety

      Reda; It's a given that he'll try to pull back on the machete. We mitigate the possibility of the attacker regaining the use of it by doing 3 things;
      1. The overhook on the arm is actually quite strong, especially when someone is holding something in their hand. The size of the fist with the object in it also forms a bit of a 'handcuff' in the armpit.
      2. We are continuously delivering violent counter attacks, forcing the attacker to choose between taking damage and focusing on getting the weapon back.
      3. Although not show much in this video lesson, while we are delivering violent counter attacks, we constantly drive forward, forcing the attacker to back peddle. That makes it harder for them to get good leverage and establish a base.

    • @ColoradoKravMaga
      @ColoradoKravMaga  Před 7 lety +1

      We disagree with trapping the weapon in your armpit. It slides out too easily.
      Bursting forward and delivering immediate, constant, and violent counter attacks are meant to break his base and make him back-peddle. You may have missed it in the lesson that along with the defense comes a simultaneous punch to the face. This tends to catch them by surprise and helps break their base.

    • @ColoradoKravMaga
      @ColoradoKravMaga  Před rokem

      Any angle of swing is dangerous and difficult to defend to begin with.
      An upward angle is less likely and will have somewhat less power behind it, but still very dangerous.
      The same "principle" of redirection can apply here, but your outside hand/arm will have to come across to help protect your head/neck since the momentum is upward therefore any redirection that the attacker follows through with will continue upward.
      This is assuming the angle of attack is closer to vertical than horizontal.
      The best chance for success in ANY machete attack is to burst in close, inside the power arch of the weapon, and damage the attacker early and often.

    A good messer type wielder would not make such telegraphed attacks in real life. They would adopt a more long-point position and snipe at you from there, and all the knife/dagger defences unarmed will end up losing your hands or end up running into the machete as you are rushing in to arm wrap. Note: the attacker isn't using an ice-pick dagger grip, but the conventional one.

    I'm perplex. What you say makes totally sense, it's good, but while I check videos about street fight with machetes I never ever see none making a whole swing like that, using his full arm lenght.They come closer more than keeping themselves out of reech. So to pass the guard seems much complicated. You showed a quasi ideal machete strike, I would say, but in those fights, they allways are much shorter (and obviously quicker).
    So How to pass threw it in that situation ?

    You'd be lucky to find anyone who holds a machete like that let alone uses it like that. You also seem to believe unrealistically that you can step in faster than a person can strike with their hands....you wouldn't be teaching this against hammer fist or punches.
    More than likely the sword is going to sit out in front and is going to be wiggled (flailed more accurately) in your face really quickly. If you present the outside of your arm it's going to hack into it. You'd have to be fighting someone who's been taught bullshido to really find yourself in the situation in the video. Another thing is the person might themselves be afraid to get in range and use the sword as a point you're not allowed to cross. I'm not sure of what is an effective way to get inside (why would you want to try?) but this isn't it...you also ignored their other arm.

      If somebody is trained in the use of the machete or sword and gets within striking distance you're dead no matter what. Wild swings to the head is the way an untrained individual would attack with a baseball bat or machete. People who train in arts like kali, silat or any other weapon based system will not attack you with blades unless you try to take their life or threaten their family.
      The same defense (more or less) is taught by Lee Morrison of Urban Combatives, a renowned expert in the field of self-protection. If you can't escape this is the way to try to get in and minimize the damage. There are no perfect answers to this type of life or death situations: even if you carry a gun and can get it on target quick enough you could still get killed if you can't evade his attack at the same time.
      How do you know how a sword will 'most likely' be used? Did you study crime statistics and reports relating to machete attacks? If so please write a detailed analysis and publish it so we can all learn from it.

      If you have his arm trapped at the wrist properly, it will be difficult (but not impossible) to draw it back. Add to that the fact that you are delivering strong solid strikes all the while, it makes it harder.
      Now, if you somehow have trapped the blade instead of the arm/wrist, then it will come out. It might or might not slice you on the way out since it's flattened, though you'll have to get your forearm out from below it.
      The key here though is to destroy the attacker with strikes.
      At some point, you could sweep or throw to ground the attacker and get away.

    It was a good defense but after you lock off arm with cutlass instead of going on the attack it's better to disarm the attacker first because if he pulls back his arm and gets free you're in trouble

    • @ColoradoKravMaga
      @ColoradoKravMaga  Před 3 lety +1

      Your control and attack in this scenario happen as simultaneously as possible preferably to the head to jar their brain to make the attacker think about something other than attacking you.
      We also dive in to the shoulder because we fully expect more swings if we do not catch them and the shoulder is the least moving part of their swing.
      You need to reset their thought process and cause damage so they either lose control of the weapon, or give you a chance to disarm.

      We never said a machete is not more dangerous than a stick. What we said is that the attack itself, the motion and angle, is similar. So we have a similar approach to defending it. The only difference is that against a stick you are safer if you DON'T get "inside" the arc as much. Against the machete, you really want to be far inside. Hope this helps clear things up for you.
