    Popular history doesn't give this mission its due. It gets overlooked falling between Apollo 8 and 11. It's good to see this historical footage detailing what this crew accomplished.

      Very true and Snoopy from Apollo 10 is still floating out there and makes an orbit back to us here and there, they should make a mission to capture that historical piece of history and bring it back home. We waste money on other programs that we see nothing and get nothing from, this would actually be something worth doing in my opinion.

    Rusty Schweickart was an interesting dude - definitely a bit left of center vs. "typical" 1960s era astronauts... a bit of an unsung hero - cut himself out of the flight rotation to try to help NASA understand space "sickness" more and with his engineering background, he was one of the primary "brains" behind saving Skylab after its very problematic deployment... Great video - thanks for continuing to release these !

    Retro Space HD, it's with great sadness that I must inform you that Astronaut Joe Engle (X-15 pilot, pilot of the Space Shuttle Enterprise for the Approach and Landing Tests, STS-2, and STS-51i) passed away today.

    Nice job as usual with this video! Interesting note that just a bit prior to the 26min mark McDivitt was describing a burn test of the lunar module decent engine with the two ships docked to simulate a service module engine burn in the event the SPS became inoperable on the way to the moon. Of course this all came into play on 13!

    Thank you for putting out this marvelous video!! Maybe a few people who are trying to get us back to the moon might have a watch and learn a thing or two since right now they have a really weird flight and Orbit process to even get us there and then 1 guy finally came out and told them it won’t work.

      Really? It's about time, Artemis has yet to show outward signs of being a serious attempt to reestablish a human lunar presence. Having only one landing opportunity per week means problems which simply delayed landings on Apollos 14 & 16 would instead lead to aborts. Lunar Gateway is a pointless and counterproductive exercise and should have been canceled years ago. Also, aspects like EVA suit design should have been pretty much finalized by now. Possibly, another external threat will be required to focus energies, such as China taking the lead.

    • @DrMackSplackem
      @DrMackSplackem Před měsícem

      @@RideAcrossTheRiver It's not necessary. I don't expect Artemis can be fixed with more money which will only be spent on the same vendors who proposed the silly Lunar Gateway and other "make us mission critical please" ideas which only threaten the value added by placing humans in harm's way. And make no mistake, this is what leaving Earth orbit means.
      Minus outside pressure, dollars with no strings attached will just get us more of the same.
      OTOH, part of NASA's charter was to pave the way for private sector space interests, and while they have not really delivered on this, the era of privately funded missions past Earth orbit is finally dawning.

      @@RideAcrossTheRiver I might as well write and demand they cancel Gateway for all the good it will do. This isn't a simple problem of not enough money to throw at something.

    Can't believe Slayton could so casually insult McDivitt, commander of the first US spacewalk mission and first all-up test missions of Apollo and LM, by relegating him to Shepard's LMP. Deke did a great job until Shepard muscled in and started screwing with the program.

    When are these kids going to realise that running things through a computer to "clean things up" ruins it? Since you have the footage on film run it again at a higher resolution.
