  • Do you really need a 131 Stage 4 for your Harley Davidson bagger motorcycle? What about the new 135 crate engine? It sounds nice, but is it practical for the average rider?

A CVO used to come with a Twin Cam 110 and that was perfectly fine. Ever since Indian cam onto the scene with their 111, Harley has been pushing the limits further and further with the Milwaukee Eight. In the end it's all about how much power you think you need, and how fast you think you're going to go.

I think you said it…do I need a 131 or do I want it? I certainly don’t need it but I did it anyway. Picked up my 2019 cvo flhtkse this weekend with a 131 installed. Let me put it this way, I couldn’t get the smile off of my face! She has a rumble that I don’t think I have heard on a bike. And from a stop, she has a ton of torque! I live in Texas and the roads are relatively straight. There was a few times that I didn’t know I was doing XXX until I looked back in the mirror and see my wife struggling to keep up in her Q60. Needless to say I put her cruise control on at 75mph for the rest of the ride home. Even at touring speed, she sounds awesome. So do I need it? Absolutely not. Do I want it! Yes, yes I do!

Local dealer told me $12,500 "installed" for that 135. And yeah, you bring up an excellent point. We built a Twin Cam 107" that made 126 hp and 128 lb/ft for my 2008 Road Glide. All the power I could imagine needing for touring and fun. My son has that bike now. My current bike is a '15 Road Glide Special. We built a 113" for it and it does 137 lb/ft and 127 hp. Again, I am not sure what I would do with more power realistically. If it boils down to dick measuring then fine, bring your check book and carry around your dyno sheet if you got the money. And, obviously if someone is legit racing, then I get it. But, I find it kind of laughable how the current trend is bigger and bigger motors with more and more power. Not sure what the point is really. The average HD rider will never "need" all that power and, quite likely, will never really use it. And I question how the primary and transmission will hold up in the long run.

On the ride back up to Wisconsin I wasn't sure. When I was in Tennessee, I had ridden it just a bit with a helmet on. But the very first time I took it out back in Wisconsin. It was hard not to smile. Took me a second, but I realized I was smiling. At that point it was well worth it and I still hadn't really got on it at that point.
I had a Yamaha R1 in an R6 track bike for the last 22 years
So even though I got the Harley brand new 2021, it lost its luster pretty fast. Just wanted something with some good power for my riding style. It's not for everybody. but if I hadn't done it I would've sold the bike.

I talked to Jamie at fuel Moto. it would’ve been a whole lot cheaper, but the bike was brand new at the time and they need a year before they can get into the software. Moonshine just came with a two year warranty on top of my warranty, and get into the software immediately because there was the stealership.

I decided my last bike would be a naked bobber (after leaving sport bikes and being old). So I bought a M8 114 Street Bob (a naked bobber). An 1800cc / 114ci engine on a bare / small frame is most definitely enough (I was actually imagining something smaller). If you want performance, Harley is not for you. However, this naked thing is pretty fun to ride. I ride more than the majority of the baggers I meet. People call bobbers barhoppers, yet I go on long rides and the baggers I know barhop (or equivalent). I though about a stage IV upgrade, but it would be ridiculous. For me, the ideal motorcycle for me has as little as possible beyond the motor. The ironic thing for me, is none of the screaming eagle upgrades I've seen are actually motorcycle riders (trailer their bikes, very short rides, wrap the throttle through town.... you know the type..... profilers).

Add their stage 2 kit and a lloydz tune to the 116ci and you're pushing 140ft lb of torque and still be under warrantee for a lot less $$ than HD. Not to mention the Lloydz 121ci Thunderstoke kit that totally surpasses HDs 135ci.

Then swapped into a S&S 475 cam and power vision plus air cleaner..WOW (I got over 105 hp and the HD “lope”..totally awesome)… and then I went full S&S internals, 131 Kit and new tune. Holy shit… pull your arm sockets out! Light the rear wheel up on demand.. 150tq and 144 hp..
And you know what… it’s intoxicating.. but it’s like going out with a stripper every time I take her out… quite frankly, stick with the “librarian (or teacher/nurse depending on your taste) and go with the S&S 475 cam and power vision or the preprogrammed module that you can get…It will give you that classic harley sound that the M8 misses… the power is exactly where we ride most of the time…

Harleys and Jeeps are the same addiction and when I spend quality time alone (with my Amex in hand) I tend to think I “need all that”….. but in this case, that S&S 475 cam is by far the best modification that transforms the bike. No need for the cam chest or any of the other stuff (except for a quality exhaust, power vision tuner and accompanying “tune”, and a good air cleaner. If you check fuel Moto, they have all of the parts and he has “canned” tunes that most likely will match the setup you go with. The owner has an ST so I suspect that have rounded out the options since I did my bike. I actually purchased all of my S&S parts from them and my dealer (Empire in New Rochelle Ny) did the install (they are fantastic to work with if you guys are close to the area… I drive up from Brooklyn to use them. Lastly, I had the bike dyno’d and tuned at getlowered.com in Pennsylvania. (They are another great shop to deal with….) Lastly lastly, I have a bassani 20th anniversary exhaust… it was nice for the 475… but loud and with the 131.. it’s really loud. So I’d look to another direction for that… probably HPI.

When I got my 21 RG CVO, I really wanted to put a stage 3 on it but opted to get the stage 2 instead and I’m glad I did. I consider my riding style to be moderately aggressive and I also like to cruise. My stage 2 gives me what I’m looking for w/o breaking the bank. So with that said, GREAT VIDEO! I upgraded my SG suspension and got rid of the factory lean condition replacing the ecm, pipes, cams and intake. It's a much better bike now than when new. I considered building the motor but instead took the $10k and purchased a 2009 ducati 1198S with 3500 miles. When riding the SG I just don't feel the need for speed. I bought it to chill but I still need a bike that boogies so the Ducati was the answer. 400 pounds and close to 200 hp stock does the trick plus it's a twin!

It'll never run like a sport bike. 117 CVO is strong. Just get the headers and dyno tune it to its full power. The problem is the delayed feel of the throttle. Even if you have the 131 or 135... if it's tuned from on a normal tuner device, you will still feel that lack of instant throttle and consistency. Dyno tune it professionally and you'll feel the difference, even on 114 stock.

Cost, practicality and time? Cost = you only live once. Practicality = ???? you ride a motorcycle, isn't that self-explanatory? And Time = Have a dealer do it in the winter when times are slow for them and they might give you a break on labor. AND: having logged in excess of 20K miles on a crate 131 with an aftermarket cam and tuner, all I can say is that there's no replacement for displacement.

I totally agree! I had a S&S t143 motor on a Road King at the same time that I had a 103 on a road glide. They both merged on the freeway just as good and I pretty much rode them about the same. Aside from the t143 sounding like an absolute monster nothing else was different and in the end I found it was a waste of $14K in motor, transmission, and upgraded drivetrain parts such as clutches and compensators. A lot of people don't take into account all the extras that you have to do to the drivetrain and fuel system when adding that much power. Not to mention the labor.

I like the comfort and looks things. Seat , sound system upgrades. All a lot cheaper to do as well.
My concerns with above a stage 2 are increased heat , decrease potentially in reliability, burning more $$ fuel. I did suspension on one bike and the bike handled so much better and in curves would probably have beat a 131 in a timed race on a road with a lot of curves.

The problem is your factory Harley is not made to handle the power that 131 or 135 or 140C.I. engine is putting out. I used to put big bore kits on scooters. One thing you will take away from your bike is reliability. When you hop up something doesn't matter what it is. Things will break more frequently and the cost of those repairs will eventually drain your bank account. Harley Davidson is just trying to market something that make a man feel like a bigger man without actually being a bigger man. I personally don't like Harley Davidson because their business practices are not invested in the customer they are invested in the corporate profits and the motor company never gave a damn about 1 of their customers that's why I ride a Honda. Best choice I made, I ride a 2022 Honda gold wing. The Honda motor company uses common sense and makes the best corporate decision based on the consumers idea. Honda actually cares about building the best quality product for a fraction of what Harley Davidson is charging.

The design and layout of the Harley power train dates back to the days of 35 or 40 horsepower. “Yes”, it has been strengthened, slightly improved from those days. However it is not designed for continuous 120 horsepower, plus high RPMs. Torque numbers over 125 or 130 will destroy the drive train in short order. So you spend a pile of money to transform a reliable user friendly motorcycle into a high strung, unreliable high dollar junk pile. If you are a unlimited horsepower and speed junkie go to the super sports bikes. In them 200 plus horsepower isn’t a problem.

    Reliability.
We travel the country two-up with the side bags, trunk and trunk bag packed to the max on our Ultra Limited. I've got the Stage II in the 114 and although it has more power than we really use I still think about the "Cool Factor" of the 131 c.i. crate motor. Traveling all over the country and reliability over stock would be of concern plus.... I have to remind myself.....it's a Geezer Glide not a V-Rod, what am I trying to do here?? Lol

Great points there. Reliability versus the cool factor as you mentioned I will definitely pass on the 131 for now. Ride safe and thank you very much for watching!

I’ve had a 117 stage 4 and to be frank, it was a very fast bike. However, a 122 stock would’ve been just as much fun in my CVO Road Glide. I’m not sure anything over a 122 is really “necessary” unless you’re newly in from sports bikes? Nice vlog 👍

    • @TyFromTennessee
      @TyFromTennessee  Před rokem +1

I agree. A 122 would most certainly be nice, but the 114 in my RG at plenty for me at the moment. Thank you very much for watching! I appreciate your time today!

I believe the Stage 3 for a 107 is now a 119. It use to be a 117. The 114 and the 117 can get a Stage 3 which would be a 122. (Screamin’ Eagle)

No one needs a Hell Cat, but sure is better than a base model, most people don’t need a 131” or bigger but I definitely do! And yes it how I drive and ride. Average people need average shit, and people who need more get more, plain and simple. There’s Mustang v6 people and theirs Mustang GT v8 people. I would never own a base model anything, just not me. And many others! You only live once! Live!!!!

I am in this boat currently. I just upgraded to stage 2 with a star 30/30 and jackpot header in the 23 Streetglide ST and the power itch got me. I think I am going to do it because there’s a few kits floating around for low cost and have an excellent mechanic with a very reasonable labor rate. I have been trying to decide on 131 vs 128? I know it’s only 3ci but for what I want to do with the potential of future modding should I got 131? I’d like to retain my 30/30 and think getting really big might be out running my cam.
I plan to stay stock head for a bit (those are more pricy then the bore kits)
Probably going to go 55i take and 5.5 injectors
Going to chat with fuel Moto and get some guidance from those that are mired in informed then I

Thank you again Ty for your time and thoughts. Great video and topic. I'm sure it will get through to a lot of riders thinking of dropping all that cash only to "keep up with the Jones" and not really need it. Like you said , if you have unlimited resources then go ahead but if not then just get out and ride a road like you are on and let the wind blow your worries away 😎Safe riding Ty 🏍
