I’m a white guy, but this song genuinely brings a tear to my eye, mostly because of the injustices that were around at the time & how important those lyrics were. There is something magical in the way this version is sung by Bob & Marcia, the perfect blending of the voices, the magnificent vibrato in the voice of Bob, but mostly it is the authenticity of what it means and the way the song is presented by the artists. It is a thing of beauty and one of my top 5 songs of all time … all the more surprising because I am a Rock fan, but this song is very special indeed.
What's amazing is that we sing this at graduations till this day. We sung this marching into the auditorium at my University's congratulatory program for the Black students. Then on the way out we danced out yo "Ain't No Stopping Us Now"!
Just dig those hand & arm moves Bob makes. And what a great outfit Marcia is wearing. Still have the original single and still think one of the best of the 70's. Lets bring back the 70's for a rerun??
RIP Brother King Bob Andy, Been blessed to meet and reason with him at Marcia Griffths' home in Kingston, JA in June 2011. We reasoned about his days with my mentor and his bredda Joe Higgs. He was such a humble genius. Condolences to the entire family circle. .
Hey everyone,, I've just watched Bob and Marcia on a more recent video version of this, singing together and Bob has his white locs, white beard, Marcia in all her finery, and they didn't miss a beat! When I see them here in this from 1970,,,, Oh my dayz I danced to this and bought the single,,, RIP BOB ANDY,,,,, We still love you and you're so missed ❤️❤️
DJ Soca Sam is definitely feeling Young, Gifted & I am most definitely Black.. Great Classic song - was always played by both of my Parents George & Veronica back in the day..
This is such a beautiful song, their voices really make it special in a soulful feeling way. Although written by Nina Simone, this version is the best by a long long way. The ska beat really add something to it. Basically I can't really explain, let's just call it a masterpiece!
As a white guy whose gifts are somewhat limited, I think this is a such an uplifting tune. Always liked it. It's in my personal top ten of favourite pop songs. I was only ten in 1970 when this was in the charts so, I was able to claim the 'young' part of the song once. Sadly no longer.
You're still gifted though to be able to love the song and not let 'white guilt / privilege' get in the way. Love, black woman, no longer young either!.x
@@michawill6599 What a lovely comment. My day wasn't going too badly at all, but switching on my computer and reading your response has made me feel that much better about myself...thank you for that. It is indeed a song that I very much love and will continue to love and enjoy until my dying day. And a great big X back to you, lovely lady.
It started playing as I was shopping in Tesco. Great song, took me back to my teens so of course I started dancing up the aisles. People gave me a wide berth, no problems with social distancing!
Reggae's breakthrough in the UK was epic in the early 70's. Even though Ska, Bluebeat and Rock Steady were a great music sub culture in the sixties. I love this song.
How blessed this island of Jamaica is to have so many talented persons coming from here , persons who have had a great impact on this world in all aspects.
This great record enhanced the presence of reggae in the UK charts in the spring of 1970. It spent eight weeks in the Top 20: 15, 6, 5, 8, 7, 7, 13, 18.
Produced by the legendary Harry J., of Harry J. All Stars' fame and composer of the classic "Liquidator." The original Jamaican Mix has no orchestra arrangement, it was added later in the UK release. Arranged by Johnny Arthey.
takes me back, sta press tonics, ben sherman, brutus , l loafers, great times, great music, never to be repeated, 70s, best time to be a teenager, ever
lewisner… She's was eventually rated as Jamaica's greatest female Artist, this song is only the tip of the iceberg for both, Bob Andy is Superseded by only Bob Marley in terms of Jamaican song writers, he wrote many, many great songs for Marcia, Himself and Ken Booth, if you surf Utube and punch in their names you will hear the Plethora of songs,, Marcia went on to join Rita and Judy Mowatt as Marley's backing singing group, also had a huge longstanding hit entitled ''Electric Boogy'' here in the U.S. unfortunately Bob Andy Died yesterday 3/27/20 RIP.
Always really liked this reggae string and drum arrangement, each verse being a variation on a theme. That tune could have got a bit repetitive, but the clever arranging kept the song fresh all the way through. It received a lot of plays on UK radio when it first came out, and was a favourite disco dance song. Seemed to do quite a lot better here in the UK than it did Stateside.
Absolutely adore this song my uncles played this constantly, and Marcia's cover of ''The FirstTime Ever I Saw Your Face'' is the penultimate cover of Roberta's original, so many beautiful Reggae 45s from the mighty Trojan label I was 6 years old my mum had me, my big brother and sister sing this, along with The Beatles ''Yellow Submarine'' am from Glasgow and songs like this got me singing way back then and still in 2019 and am still singing, LOVE IT!!!!
i,m 70 yrs old and white and was born in tredworth gloucester and was amongst alot of jamaican,s and african,s and of course alot of white,s as well and growing up i did not experience any racism what so ever. i did,nt even notice skin colour differences.there,s good and bad in every race no matter what your colour. over the years i have worked with some black carpenters and we used to joke with each other and the irish we got on great. people who are racists need to fucking grow up and see the good in people instead of listening to ignorant bastards and makeup there own minds. in more recent years i have worked with quite a few bulgarians and i found them good blokes aswell Speak as you find, thats what i say.And as far as Black music is concerned its Fucking GREAT ! Young gifted and black is a great song and i like the sentiment of the song ! Quite simply there is a lot of young gifted and black people , equally with all other skin colours to .I like them all. its a pity more people don,t try and get on with each other, life to short. kind regards to all of you , Rob from gloucester
They were shell shocked remember we were still running from the national front so lots of other factors how can you like and hate at the same time, than jah a lot has changed, Bob & Marcia got real guts

This song reminds me so much of my brother he used to love this song and sing it. He is no longer with us may he Rip😢
So sorry to hear of your loss, I hope this song brings back pleasant memories of your brother.💯❤
Memories of the 70s as a teenager.! Those were the days.. Disco Queens.! 😂 ❤️
What's amazing is that we sing this at graduations till this day. We sung this marching into the auditorium at my University's congratulatory program for the Black students. Then on the way out we danced out yo "Ain't No Stopping Us Now"!
A happier simpler time.Sadly missed,wish I could go back.
Just dig those hand & arm moves Bob makes. And what a great outfit Marcia is wearing. Still have the original single and still think one of the best of the 70's. Lets bring back the 70's for a rerun??
VauxhallVictorMan.. if only we could.
Of course 1970 was actually the last year of the 1960s.. but yeah..
What a superior feel good tune makes my hair stand on end .....makes me feel young and full of life's enthusiasm for the future 😜

This is such a beautiful song, their voices really make it special in a soulful feeling way. Although written by Nina Simone, this version is the best by a long long way. The ska beat really add something to it. Basically I can't really explain, let's just call it a masterpiece!
Yes, this was played a lot in childhood, mostly by my Mum and Grandad… rediscovering brought a massive smile to my face… been on repeat since lol👍

It's definitely the best version.
It is a Massive Masterpiece 🙏🏾

The production in this track is outstanding, a great mix of the string section with different variations of each verse.
Produced by the legendary Harry J., of Harry J. All Stars' fame and composer of the classic "Liquidator." The original Jamaican Mix has no orchestra arrangement, it was added later in the UK release. Arranged by Johnny Arthey.
