- Despite April Fools' Day, today's video will try to answer one question: Can Windows 10 run on a Pentium 4 from the Windows XP era of computing? Watch to find out! For those interested, the computer I used was a Dell Dimension 8400, which was designed for Windows XP.

***** No I have not done that yet. I'm sure a core 2 duo can run Windows 10 decently though.
+SonicKnuckles1998 No he can't put Core 2 Duo and Pentium D on Dell Dimension 8400 because motherboard with latest bios not support it.
+SonicKnuckles1998 Only Dell Dimensions 9200 or greater can support Pentium D, Core 2 Duo, and Core 2 Quad. Dell Dimension 8400 was built in 2004.
+Donmonic21 you mean socket 775 systems
Good video, sir!! You have have helped the humanity (with join community efforts, of course) to try Windows 10 ok P4s, only if is a Prescott one. Not a Willamette 478 or others without NX, PAE and SSE2 support
That Means it doesn't have NX Support, Which is, By Default, Needed to Run Windows 10. However, their is a way to mod the image to disable the NX Requirement.
And how do you do that please?
*Socket 775's has NX.*
*Even, Core 2 Duo can run Windows 10 because of the NX.*
And, Pentium 4 *_has LGA775._*
on my pentium e6300,i installed win 10,deleting win 7,because in win7(nx-bit not supported).Pentium E6300 supported it,motherboard.But,Nx-bit was turned off....In BIOS!
I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 from 2003 with 512mb ram Pentium m 4 that ran XP professional... When I put Windows 10 Home on a 32GB flash drive and booted from it, It got to the windows logo and restarted/bootloop before it could even reach the spinning icon. I even configured the flash drive to use ReadyBoost but to no avail.
The Dell Dimension 8400 was from between 2004 and 2005. It had a socket 775 which was the newer socket for the Pentium 4. Windows 10 can run on a socket 775 processor but not on a socket 478 processor. Windows 8 and Windows 10 require NX on the processor while Windows 7 or earlier doesn't.
You can install windows 10 32bit by going into the sources file where setup executes a other file.
Pentium 4 socket 775's work with Windows 10. Not 478.
***** Good thing socket 479 totally exists. But, really, I'd love to see a picture of that.
+thecomputerman100 479 only been seen on laptops, used in core2duop core2quad, dual cores and celerons.
remleiable Thank you for telling me! I didn't know that! Sorry ***** !
My 478 Dell Dimension 2400 runs it well enough
AIO inc. Okay, sure.
My expectations were low because it's April Fools day. You exceeded them. Great job. #teammjd
Linuxguideontheair It's always a pleasure to make videos for you all! :D #TeamMJD
@@MichaelMJD do you remember this comment?
I should also add that SOME later P4s supported these features, but the majority of them do not. A little bit of googling should help you resolve the issue.
Does that procssor support PAE, NX and SSE2?
i've tried to install w8 on an old pc but it doesn't supporta those instructions, so it can only get up to w7.
I work with several Pentium 4 computers. Technically, as long as it's a P4 HT 2.0ghz+ and more than 2 GB of RAM it should work. However, an older P4 could have trouble. I have a few P4 computers that could not even boot to Ubuntu. Still, If your computer is older than 2004-ish, and you can add a bit more RAM, you should be able to get it to run at least Windows 7. Windows 8.1 and later use a few modern components that aren't common at this era and are not easy to add (TPM for example). Win10 also uses RAM compressed caching which does make it need more than 2 gb, though the requirements say so.
Good luck to any person who tries to upgrade!
more then likely the chipset is too old to support windows 10 preview.
SteelCity1981 Yes that is the only thing I can think of.
I mean it might work if you use a program called RT Se7en Lite and put the chipset windows 7 drivers in the windows 10 installation.
+SteelCity1981 Chipset doesn't really matter, it matters if the P4 have NX Bit support (No Execute) or not (not supported by CPU/BIOS or is disabled on BIOS..), Only Pentium 4 5x0J, 5x1, 6xx and all 64 bit Pentium 4s support NX bit, there no socket 478 P4s with NX bit support though. All Athlon 64s and it's variants (Opteron, Semprom..) supports NX bit
Carlos Santana Montjoy yes it does if windows doesn't support the chipset drivers nothing on the board will work. windows needs the chipset drivers in order to function the board properly
SteelCity1981 as i know. Windows have generic drivers for many old chipsets (generally Intel, VIA, Sis...), also moderm Windows like 7/8 and newer still recognizes old chipsets as the i440BX (1998) uses in Pentium II/III and several virtualization software like VMware
Michael? Did you ever try using a later version of Windows 10 on the P4, not the preview?
The worst is these people testing old cpu on windows 10 and then saying that it does not serve nowadays for nothing. For cases like this, there are only two options: Put an OS from the cpu era or put a light linux like LXLE that besides running very well is still updated.
Windows 8 and above requires NX bit to be present in the processor.Apparently I also tried it on my old Dell PC and failed.
That old mjd intro tho
i got an old socket 478 pentium 4 rig with a geforce 2 mx400... should i even try windows 10?
If you are working for Windows 10 on a Pentium 4, you have to use a Prescott 500 seies with J suffix or 600 series or extreme edition (And of course the BIOS has to support NX as well). Things like Dell OptiPlex GX280 will work with Windows 10 after a processor upgrade to J and GPU upgrade. Things like OptiPlex GX520 will work with Windows 10 x86 right out of box as long as you have enough RAM.
thank you for this very important information!! i have an Intel Pentium 4 (Northwood) Processor 2.80 GHz, 512K Cache, 533 MHz FSB and i was straggling with no result to install windows 10 32 bit! thank you for this comment!!
On one of my old HP desktop PCs it actually works, it has a Pentium 4 HT processor in it (HP dc7600).
When you booted up, you didn't get an architecture error, but after that, the console prompt out memory locations for the OS
I using Windows 10 on my Intel Celeron D 336 since 2020.02.01 and it runs with a usable performance. Btw my CPU is way worse than a Pentium 4. Win10 will run, but I recommend lower down the system settings like the animations and other things for the best performance.
I'm trying to upgrade from Windows 7 with a Pentium 4 531 CPU. It keeps telling me it doesn't support PrefetchW... Is there no way around this? Also it's trying to upgrade from 64 bit.
To my knowledge, there is is a missing cup feature
I have windows 10 running on my Pentium 4 specs:
Intel Pentium 4 3.06GHz (64 bit capbiable)
2GB DDR2 Memory
@Belchy 94 Me too. But the 64-Bits version of Windows 10.
HOW 64 BIT WINDOWS 10 ON X32 PROCESOR only windows 10 x 64 on pentium 4
@@NedimMerdan My processor is a x64 bit processor. And this is a Pentium 4 also.
Pentium 4 775's does not have LAHF/SAHF bit, which is required by 8.1/10 x64.
@@P1utia Yes.
Simple question: Are there ANY Pentium 4 Socket 478 processors that are Windows 10 compatible (Desktop CPU, not Mobile/Laptop CPU)? If so, which model numbers?
have you tried going to BIOS and configuring the hyperthreading?
also have you tried again with more recent builds?
+Johney Five I had hyper-threading enabled on this machine when I originally did this, and I have not tested any of the recent builds of Win10, but I doubt they will work either.
i am at 1:10, honestly a p4 should do fine on windows 10 if you pump it full of memory, the 4 gig (well, quite a bit less than 4 gig usable) limit should be plenty and the core itself is actually pretty strong. it's hyperthreaded so it should do alright if you treat it like a phone. should be able to pass stuff off to the gpu ok for very light gaming if you toss a gpu in (if it even has decent options though).
i don't think ur CPU has virtualization technology but just out of curiosity u got the 32 bit version right?
that P4HT might actually be a 64 bit capable chip... I had one at one point, if it's a Prescott chips... then it should have some sort of x64 support... especially a late Pentium pre-Core2 chip!
just to think i have one asus eeepc 701 netbook tooo... but in white. still running XP, a nLite'd version
what speed did you burn the DVD?
I don't remember haha
+mjd7999 retry it burn the ISO with a for sure working burner at 4x burn speed. Boot from the freshly burned DVD on a known capable pc. exit with out installing then try it on the old pc. if it still fails try a different DVD drive. I have a few DVD drives that read games and movies fine, but will get errors installing windows.
The almighty Prescott 531! I love that processor, still have mine.
I have a Dell Latitude XT2 designed for both Windows 7 and Windows 8 thru 8.1. Windows 7 was pre-installed. Dualbooted with Windows 10, really good.
WindowsFanMade aaaand I also have a Dell Dimension 8400 as my first computer ever. I still have it today, but it's dusty and all that.
Zorin Lite 32 bit worked on P4 Intel 875 chip set from 2002 for me. PCI wifi card, ATI 4670 graphics card, New ASUS audio card, ether net on board , Brothers printer and a Cannon scanner (both from 2002) booted off a ISO DVD.
+Max Hughes When I built this PC for work. I paid 200.00 for XP and 500.00 for Office (Lotus). Zorin did it all for free. I couldn't even find a driver for my old printer for 32bit Window's 7. LINUS is SUPERMAN
that intro is really good! why did you stop using it?
you need SP1 (if you can get this to work)
The P4 does not support one of the Instructions code that W10 requires. Go read the advanced system requirements. However, it will boot if the hard drive already has a Windows 10 installation it. Try installing it from a different computer
Like the intro!
HOLY SHIT 5 YEARS AGO
I remember trying to run Windows 10 on my Windows XP computer. It was a cedar mill Pentium a little over 3 gigahertz with v//v technology. I couldn't get it to boot windows Vista. I couldn't get it to boot Windows 7. I couldn't get it to boot Windows 8/8.1. I couldn't get it to boot windows 10... It was all something about "ACPI compliance" or at least that's what Windows 10 returned every other operating system just blue screened. I ran Windows XP until 2016. My G-Force 7300 LE and Pentium 4 would have held up okay-ish I mean they would be able to do desktop things and the kicker about my motherboard is that it only supported Pentium D architecture as it was one of the early 2000s LGA boards. Had I seen this tutorial I would definitely have kept that system running....
I tried it on a Dell Optiplex GX260 and it did not boot, but I also had a Optiplex GX280 and it works for the GX280 but not the GX260. Both of the machines are Pentium 4, the GX260 a 2.6Ghz and the GX280 2.8Ghz. I luckilly got it installed on the GX280 and then found out it needed a newer video card. I had a old PNY Geforce 210 video card so I installed it and it fixed the video driver issue. All other hardware worked but were old buggy Microsoft drivers. If you want Windows 10 to run on your Pentium 4 machine and it installs, be prepared to run into driver problems.
My school's got a PC with a Pentium IV HT 2.8 GHz running Windows 10. It animates stuff at like 10fps.
Миша я не понял, у тебя получилось установить win10 на это компьютер?
Hello Michael MJD from 2021 xD
I have installed Windows 7 on P3 450 MHz with 512 MB of RAM. Well, it worked, but very slowly.
I have a Celeron N3060 1.60 GHz (2 CPUs) and its run fine
i have over 60 Pentium 4 CPUs including this model (P4 631), i remember back then when i had only like 15 P4s like in mid 2014, but i picked too many xD. i guess only like 20 of then support NX bit
Possible to just decompress the windows install.wim using ImageX, then manually build the MBR and see if that makes it boot. Fun fact: you can use this method to install windows onto a USB or SD drive. Make sure your SD reader is on the USB bus or you won't be able to use a SD card though. *(DAMN I HATE LENOVO'S BRILLIANT IDEA TO HOOK IT UP TO THE PCI SLOT)*
It's about the NX-bit feature that old processors do not have.
The socket is just a coincidence.
Only 775 P4s 'that have' NX/XD bit.
Hello, how can I install Windows 10, on Intel Pentium 4 640 HT?
Yes
MJD I CAN INSTALL WINDOWS 10 HOME IN MY DELL DEMISION 8400
How can u enable transperancy on windows 7 on P4 :0
Please tell me
+Yasa Chowdhry I was just able to go into control panel and change to the Aero theme. If your graphics card does not support it, you will not be able to change to Aero. This machine has an after-market GPU inside it.
my computer is a dell demention e510 with windows 7
Me, I have an older hp laptop from 2005 with an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ with 1.25 GBs of ram. I doubt if it would be able to run Windows 10 either, but I'm using Windows XP on it. I actually tried loading Windows 95 and 98 on it, but kept getting errors on boot. I guess if an operating system is too much newer or older than the computer hardware, then I guess there will be problems with compatibility.
Did you up date bios? You need Explorer 11.
I have a hp Pentium 4 with ht computer that worked on Windows 10
i had it in na p4 3ghz that i guive tho my dad and the p4 was fast on booting
you may have problem with your ram!
check them with memtest86. also HD may have bad sectors...
Well it's possable to run it but not on the model you have. It only runs on later revisions such as the Prescut line but that's the only line I know of. You could try and boot it off a USB and if USB booting is not supported use Plop witch is a free boot menu you can download and then try. That's how AA Computers and Tecnoligy got it running.
I guess the system requirements for Windows 10 only call for a 1ghz processor and 1gb of ram, so I imagine even a 1.3ghz p4 machine can run it as long as it supports enough ram.
But only the later models of Pentium 4 which include the NX Bit, which is required since Windows 8.
All 64 bit variants of Pentium 4 should work (Socket 775)
@@MultiWirth However, I highly doubt that those Pentium 4 CPUs would be able to run Windows 11. I did however get Windows 11 running on a Core 2 Quad PC from 2008 and it runs okay even though it's not officially "supported"
@@sburton015 Yes it also runs on my old Q6600 and i´m pretty sure it will on a Pentium 4 "Prescott" with the same patches required to run it on the Core2 series.
Somewhere i have an old P4 HT and another spare 775 mainboard/system.
8:15 you should boot up from the dvd, not open setup.
Great video.
Matlockization Thanks!
You can run win11/10 but only on Cedar Mill pentium 4s (631-661)😊
7 on a PC with a Pentium 4 would be cool, but i wouldn't use it as my main pc.
Some months ago I thought the P4 was a 64-bit processor (x86_64), but about a week ago I read the specs and then I saw that IT only supported 32-bit memory transport.
There are 32bit and 64bit models
mine was 64 bit..intel pentium 4 541 presscot. running on windows 7 64 bit and planning to upgrade it to windows 10 maybe.
I'm so glad I just found your video. I have been running a clean install of Windows 10 32-bit on my Dell Dimension 8400 for a few weeks. My problem is that I can't shut it down without the Blue Screen restart loop. It seems to be caused by the 128mb PCI Express x16 ATI Radeon X300 SE graphics card and the Vista driver does not work. I'm hoping you can suggest a Windows 10 compatible and inexpensive card that will work in the 8400. It won't be used for gaming. I need it as a backup before I upgrade my Dell Inspiron 7537 laptop. My specs are Pentium 4 w/HT, 3GHz 800 FSB. It has 3 GB RAM, 1TB SATA. It is a Prescott 630, Intel EM64T, PAE, NX, SSE, etc. (Everything except Virtualization). I initially planned to just run Windows 8.1 until I happened to get the offer for Windows 10 free upgrade. It runs great and Cortana is even working with 2 out of 5 of my 5.1 surround sound speaker system with subwoofer. Unfortunately, the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS sound card has no driver either. But my floppy drive works. At the time, I could afford the top of the line, but now I have to live with what I have now. Any suggestions from you or your viewers would be greatly appreciated! Sorry for the long post, but I just can't seem to get anywhere with my searches and Windows 10 is pushing the install on my laptop and Dell drivers suck even more than their support. Hopefully, this will help anyone who has a Prescott 6XXX!
Get a Geforce 8400
😄funny thing I got that same error message when I tried to get windows 8 developer preview running on a virtual machine
i got my dell dimension 4700 to run windows 10 it had a pentium 4 2.8ghz and 2gb of ram and it was pretty smooth but i went back to 7 i felt like 10 was to new for it lol
it needs nx support I tried to install on Dell dimension 2400 and that's what it told me
Tried to count the "uhs" and "umms" in the narration. It's not easy. Lost count in the 70's.
Umm good for you
Sorry, man, it just really stands out. Too bad about the failed test.
Sry it just happens sometimes :)
With some quick research the cpu needs to support nx to be able to run 8/10
I installed Windows 10 on a pentium 3 desktop and I use the computer as my main computer now
My family's old pentium 4 2.66ghz machine with socket 478 from 2002 unfortunately cannot run anything above windows 7 because of the nx bit requirement. It also doesn't support sse3 which means chrome 88 is the last version that will run on it. Aero is enabled because of an ati radeon 9550 graphics card, and at least it installs windows 7, but even then it doesn't support booting from usb
That PC won't boot Windows 10 because it doesn't have CPU features like PAE and NX. These are needed since Windows 8. I think some Windows 8 builds supported 478 CPUs.
I actually think it is impossible to play some of resent games on a P4.9
My mom has the same pc. I tried 10 on it we had to downgrade back to 8.
Lol I'm currently running a music stream PC with a pentium 4, 1gig of ram in my garage and it works like a charm
Thanks men
علاء الدين للمعلوماتية No problem :D
The computer that I use has a pentium 4 HT 3.2GHz in it and it runs Windows 10 just fine it could be a bit faster for my liking but it works no problem and it plays games just fine as well
you need to turn off the paravizuation
Has anybody told ya that you're voice is somewhat similiar to the older Teds voice from How I Met Your Mother show? xD
Daxe TM Lol no but thanks :D
ye that's easy, i have a 3.2 ghz pentium 4 ht extreme, it runs quite well
The reason it doesn't work is because how to CPU manages memory locations and the registers
in the CPU. In reality it should've worked, because the P4 is based on the x86 architecture from Intel (32 bit). Maybe they use the newer architecture x86_64, but they support 32 bit locations (32-bit vars). I don't know.

I did this on an ancient Fujitsu Siemens Pentium 4 and damn it was slow...
My old Dell Pentium 4 (with 4GB ram) runs Windows 7 Pro with almost no delay but can't play any new games.
I installed it for shits and giggles but it can barely keep up. Its using the built in graphics card and it really doesn't do much other than slowly move the cursor and use a notepad.
have a hp desktop socket 775 3.06 ht 2GB ram and it ran Windows 10 but went back to xp because I heard of Windows 10 tracks u easyer
Windows 10 runs on a dell latitude d620 which has 1gb of ram, i2 processor, and 60gb ide hard drive. it works, a little on the slow side.
I tried the final version of Windows 10 on the same machine and it works. Probably the technical preview didn’t support the Pentium 4
Interesting, might have to see how regular 10 works on this sometime
Windows 10 only works on 775 Pentium 4s.
Well some how I got it working on a Pentium 4 478 (with no patch) and it worked!
@@nigelcooper1191 Never mind it not working on 478. It works on the 5x1, 517, 524, and the 6xx series. Also 5x5J, and 519J.
i got windows 10 works on my pentium 4 pc
spec
pentium 4 ht
2 gb ram
I want a thinkpad with win xp :/
It's not about the socket, its about the cpu series.S478 prescott will run but s478 northwood wont, because the prescotts have the PAE bit. Socket 775 had prescotts and not northwood. so there is 100% compatibility with Windows 10
Pass the step1 on the other machine, after the first reboot reinsert the hdd and try again :)
i remember using the 8400 up until 2015
+ryan perkins it was really damn slow
I got windows 10 running on my old pentium 4, it was really slow.. xD
Dude, the pentium 4 will bottleneck every modern piece of hardware xDD
+HamDerDanskeren The best is Windows XP for Pentium 4 :)
win 8 will on a pent 4 3.00 chip 64 bit system duel core i tried it
Trust me windows 7 is much better
+Ljubim te Strehar! xp is much better than Windows 7
MarStro Not anymore
+Spoder News I use an smartphone... HAHAHA
yeah, windows 10 is so bad
XP is better, but XP death ; (
I agree with thecomputerman100, socket 775 motherboards will work but that is a CPU CLASS and chipset class issue that kept windows 10 from working. I am actually surprised Windows 7 pro worked! But hey,it is only software. It can be tweaked and fooled. Just check out nLite and vLite and now NTLITE software. It allows customizing Windows CDs to boot unattended and even to over come some of those HARDWARE limits!

@CarlosColumbia10 That is exactly why. Mjd, Pentium 4 processors don't have NX built into them. So, Windows 8+ are not OFFICIALLY supported. HOWEVER, there are several YT videos of people using some basic programs to patch boot files, and using gimagex and such, to install W8, 8.1, 10TP (not sure about 10 final), thanks for reading!
thanks for the video buddy, didnt answer my question right enough, but appreciate the data from the video regardless, im hoping 10 runs on my old optiplex, its pentium 4 and has 1gb ram, will be testing myself soon anyway :) fingers crossed lol
TartanSpartan01 Sorry, what was your question again? And thanks for the feedback, good luck! :)
mjd7999
sorry lol was more of an internal question, i have an old ultra small form factor dell p4 1gb ram, i was watching your video hoping it was 1gb of ram you had just so id get an idea of its performance. since xp is fast becoming obsolete now im going to need to bite the bullet anyway. if i may offer some constructive criticism or advice and its just my opinion/preference, for basic usage i would have loved to have seen youtube and perhaps some browsing or somehing at the same time to get an idea of real world performance. but anyway, i cant stress enough how great youtube is for videos like this, its important i think that people know it helps, and yours did so thanks again. I may actually come back when i test it and post here incase it helps anyone.
TartanSpartan01 I think this Dell has 2GB of RAM. I might do something like that to see how usable XP is in 2015, but I'll have to think about it. I would like to see your results for Win10 on your Dell, so if you ever get around to that then go ahead and post it! Thanks for the comment! :D
mjd7999
sounds good,i still think its a really nice OS, i would be very curious to see a video like that, especially interested to see how it holds up in terms of security these days, i imagine with windows 10 around the corner it might actually become less and less a target for hackers/trojans etc as time goes on. It would be great to have a lightweight window os to fall back on for older machines or specific uses. might be controversial to some extent, but id like to see some linux distros vs xp for older machines or something, the only reason i dont have linux mint as a main os for example is just the sheer compatability and support for apps and everything else that windows offers. But yeah man il let you know how i get on i might even upload a video if i feel it will be helpful to people, i wont post the link here but tbh id feel like i was awkwardly trying to snatch up your viewers or something lol, tbh i dont care about the success of my little library of vids i did them purely to give back to the community as it was videos and the youtube community who gave me a lot of help and advice towards my pc build last year and im getting to that age where i realise the importance of contributing and the value of community lol
if anyones curious i installed windows 10 on my old optiplex sx280 pentium 4 1gb ram 40gb hdd and cd rom, i found it to be unsuitable for use, it was functional, but aswell as having problems with updating the drivers (dell probably will never update them to windows 10 as they pretty much stopped supporting my model at windows xp), i found it to be just a bit to sluggish, this without the basic anti-virus and security programs that we all use, it was close, but i think the best suitor in this case would be linux mint 17.2 xfce edition, lightweight enough that it should run great and give me basic apps etc. yet to try it right enough but i dont see there being a problem, getting the nano wifi usb to work i see that being a problem, hopefully not a big one. Anyway i hope this info can help someone save a lot of time, its just my findings and opinions but i gave it a good shot. I feel windows 8 may work better, less reliance on store apps unless manually loaded, but if anyone is going to experiment with that with specs like i have you will likely want to disable windows updates completely in windows services, then in the control panel.
