CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Khaila (Halle Berry) and Margaret (Jessica Lange) agree to help raise Isaiah (Marc John Jefferies) together.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Two women of dramatically different social, economic, and ethnic circumstances find themselves locked into a bitter child custody dispute in this emotionally powerful drama. Khailia Richards (Halle Berry) is a poor and drug-addicted single mother who, while stumbling out of a crack house one night, accidentally leaves her infant son Isaiah in a cardboard box near a trash heap. The next morning, Khailia realizes to her horror that she left her baby behind, and she runs back to the crack spot to retrieve him. However, the baby is missing, and after much search, she presumes that he must be dead. As it turns out, the baby was spotted in the nick of time by sanitation workers and rushed to a hospital, where at the insistence of social worker Margaret Lewin (Jessica Lange) the baby's life was saved. Margaret's heart goes out to the baby, who, along with illnesses brought about by neglect, suffers from emotional and educational problems often associated with children whose mothers used cocaine during pregnancy. Margaret adopts Isaiah and raises the child with the help of her husband Charles (David Strathairn). Four years later, Khailia has successfully gone through drug rehabilitation and holds down a steady and responsible job as a nanny and housekeeper. She learns by chance that Isaiah is still alive, and she quickly hires an attorney, Kadar Lewis (Samuel L. Jackson), to help her reclaim custody of her son. However, Margaret loves the child and is not about to give him up without a battle in court. LaTanya Richardson plays Caroline Jones, the attorney Kadar Lewis squares off against in court; in real life, Richardson and Jackson are married.

He should stay with the adoptive family but the birth mother should be allowed to see him and be involved.
I loved this movie and I hated it at the same time..... I hated that the biological mother tore her son away from what he knew as love and family because she was selfish and couldn't live with what she had done to him.
I love the scene when the child is in the bathtub still clenching on to the hair barrette his adopted mom gave to him. A child only associates their mom to be the one that protects and nurtures them and not the one who looks like them or who happens to be their biological mother. Halle's character thought she could just reappear in the child's life and the child was going to embrace her as his mom. His mom was the one that comforted him while he was sick and the one that protected him. There is a movie with something similar to this called Fort Bliss.
Since the birth mom got sober she should have visitation rights but custody should go to the adopted mom.
That hug between the two mothers..... Powerful! The beauty of forgiveness & peace, love it.
When he turns around and sees her and starts running to his mom it almost feels like for a minute that he's your son and you've been away from him too. Almost like you wanna pick him up and say I've missed you. They took that baby away from his mom.
His 'white' Mother was ready and willing to do all the hard work to raise a drug affected baby from the beginning, and her character must have know how difficult that would be. The reality is that she should have been allowed to keep custody. Shouldn't matter if she'd been white, black, Asian, whatever, she never abandoned him and just showed up when it was convenient to take a kid she left behind and then go back for help when she realized she had no idea what she was doing.
the natural mother had a good idea in the end .....let him stay with them until he can understand it......and then they can just focus on getting to know one another, have the biological mother over for dinner, etc. let isiah have play time with her in their home, be consistent, etc. then if he feels ready at some point to go with her, the adoptive parents will have a better transition too, like Isiah will.
the teacher was like at the end I'm done I'm so done
they should have just did an open adoption. the bio mom can still see him and be a part of his life and his stability with his adoptive family wouldn't be turned upside down.
Love has no color!
That was nice when they hugged at the end. How simple was that, everyone working together.
The way little Isaiah smiles and calls mommy feels so genuine, truly a child that final,y reunites with the mother, great actor that lil kid was.
He was one of the best child actors I've ever seen 😭
That hug between the two mothers ..... Powerful! The beauty of forgiveness & peace
"Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!"
The ending is so touching grabs your heart
It's gotta be confusing for any child to be taken away from any family he or she's ever known.
I wish it didn't end like that. It felt more like a "to be continued" kind of ending...but it was a very good movie.
I feel like every mom has a love hate relationship with this movie. I try my best to be companionate to those with drug problems, but be real she left her baby in a box high out of her mind and he almost died ! In what world would she have been given custody back ?! Just because she finally decided to get clean, that doesn’t mean she’s entitled to have him back. I’m sorry
