  • Ever played Monopoly, Catan, Pandemic, Carcassonne, UNO, Scrabble, Jenga, Wingspan, Ticket To Ride, Clue, Great Western Trail, Forbidden Island and simply learnt how to play it the wrong way? I certainly have many times. Learning how to play a brand new modern board game can sometimes be overwhelming as there are a lot of rules to learn. In this VLOG, I share with you 10 rules I got wrong whilst playing some of my favourite board games.

    My worst mistake was in Gloomhaven... specifically with using the helper app... I didn't realise that the enemy attack cards actually added the base attack and move to the card, so you don't have to add the base move and attack to the card... so every time we were playing they would move 7 and attack for 8 - we were playing at such a high difficulty it was insane...

    The most recent mistake I made was in Dwellings of Eldervale. I had thought that every time you place a unit in an elemental realm, you ended up gaining power in that element - which made for a game in which everyone is getting really high on almost all of the elemental tracks (especially since you also gain power when you Regroup after you buy some of the Adventure cards)...
    Then I went back and now I realize that you only gain power WHEN YOU BUILD A DWELLING in that elemental realm, NOT when you place a unit in the realm (in addition to the Adventure cards) - so you don't advance on them that quickly.

    After the first play of Honey buzz, I noticed little icons beneath the honey contracts, I asked: what do these drawing mean? I learned, look for little icons om the board!

    Thank god I’m not the only one who played Viticulture that way. I was discarding vine cards for two years before I realized that was not the rule.... funny how I still really liked the game regardless, it was just longer I suppose 😹

    My mistake was for Terraforming Mars, playing the solo game, I didn't know al the tracks started at 1, I started at 0... and I felt like the game was unbeatable. Then I read the rules and was liek "Oh... derp."
    Beat the game next playthrough. A turn early even.

      Wait... they start at 1? Oh... maybe I’m not as bad as I thought then hahaha

    I love INIS, but it is a bit of an acquired taste and I agree that the rules can be a bit tricky. Honestly though, it sounds like you have clashes pretty much figured out! You didn't talk about the citadel step, maybe for time, but first everyone involved in the clash gets to place one clan at a time in any available citadels, until there are none available. Then, the clash lasts as long as two conditions are met: 1) there is at least one "exposed" (rulebook term meaning "not in citadels") clan in the region, AND 2) at least one player wants to continue the clash. This second condition is my favorite bit: if at ANY point everyone agrees to end the clash, it immediately ends. But as long as the clash continues, players involved in the clash take turns doing a "manuever" action: attack, withdraw, or play an Epic Tale Card that says it can be played "as a manuever". That is the best I can encapsulate it. Sometimes I think confusion is generated by the fact that *technically* the clash continues even after only one player has exposed clans left: they can then unilaterally end it (they are "all of the involved players" all by themself) OR they could do withdraw or epic tale actions if applicable (but of course there is no one to attack). I will try to answer any follow up questions if anyone has them, although as usual there are some good threads discussing these rules in the BGG forums for INIS as well.

      Thank you for this very concise explanation. Yes I didn't mention the citadel step mainly because I didn't want to talk too long about the game as it was a list video. I really appreciate your explanation as to how a clash ends because thats the main part where my brain just can't seem to comprehend how it all works. Thanks once again.

    I had probably played 20 games of Little Prince: Make Me a Planet before I ever realized there was a penalty for the person who had the most volcanoes. Completely missed that rule...

    The guy who introduced me to Orleans taught us that you can still take an action even if there aren’t any remaining associated followers - you would get the bonus, but not the follower. I loved the game and got my own copy, and it was a nice surprise to see the actual rule (you can’t take the action if there are no more followers). It made the game even more of a tight race.
    It was a bit awkward the next time I played with that guy and tried to point out the rule.

    In Gloomhaven, I was burning a card for each damage I wanted to prevent, rather than 1 card for the entire instance of damage. I figured this out after playing Gloomhaven digital... and the best instance of this new discovery helping me was when I prevented a 14 or 16 damage instance (monster drew 2x attack modifier) with only 1 card!

    Made lots of mistakes when I started and that discouraged my non-gamer hubby. But then I started playing all games first (two-handed if needed), make all the goofs, play again 1-2 times before introducing to hubby (except if it's a really simple game). That really works well, he doesn't get discouraged anymore, I can counsel him on which moves are the best, why, and he can enjoy himself a lot more!
    I play ALL my games 5-6 times when I get them and within a week. I don't have an unplayed ones. By doing this, I have found that I remember the rules even if it's been a while I haven't played. The games I didn't do that for when I first started my collection, to this day, I still struggle each time I get back to them. So always 5 games minimum in a short amount of time. If I don't feel like playing 5 times in a row, obviously I made a very poor choice to buy that game. So that is also a very good way to know if a game is for me! :D

      I did the same at first but it makes your fellow players very lazy, it’s a lot of work, and you condition them into expecting a lubricated experience.

    I played Imperial Settlers wrong the first three times: did not notice that Production buildings automatically produce as soon as they are played, in addition to the beginning of every round.

      Yes. I think I also missed that one too on my first play. I always thought you had to wait til the production phase. Makes a difference with all of those extra resources!

    The first time I played 7 Wonders: Architects I somehow missed that each civilisation's deck had to be face-up. We all silently wondered how could this game be so random? How you could you ever plan a strategy if you couldn't see the cards to draw? 😬

    6:39 Even after I figure out the rules to Mage Knight, I don’t think I will ever be able to play it right… Because there are just too many persnickety little rules in that game!

    • @BoardGameSanctuary
      @BoardGameSanctuary  Před rokem +3

      Yes... I do find it frustrating when a game teaches you a set of rules and then introduces 5 little exceptions or situations where those rules apply. I can't seem to get my head to remember those types of rules.
      With Mage Knight, as long as you enjoy how you play the game the way you want then its fun!

    My worst mistake was with Nusfjord but I really like playing my accidental variant more lol I didn't realize when you used your elder, it was part of the 3 action you had for the whole turn! So very limiting if following the real rule. But I was actually using them freely (while feeding them which still required planning and using my short fish supply to do so). But by having them play without using up one of my 3 actions I was able to keep combo-ing them in different ways from game to game according to the cards available in the market. The combos were really fun and took longer to work out but so much more satisfying than the very tight original game where you barely scrape by and you have to end up with cards that are very subpar and lame cause you just don't have the resources. Makes the game longer but so much more interesting! I tried the real rule twice after 3 games with mine and went back to my version. :)

      @BoardGameSanctuary  Před rokem +1

      That is so cool that you discovered a much more fun way to play. Yes sometimes I like a little bit more freedom in my Euros, so I think I may also try your rule variant!

    Thanks for this! I also take rules notes and highlight my rule books!
    one of the mistakes I made was with the tea dragon society Autumn harvest. The mentor token allows you to use an extra growth token. I knew that when you used it you had to give it to the next player, but I thought you could choose when to use it! actually, you must pass it to the next player anytime you purchase a card. so I played that wrong the first few games.

      In Splendor, I didn't realize that the golden seal token and the reserved card could be taken rightaway and the token used in any later purchase . I thought you placed the gold token on a card in the market, making it so no one else could buy it, and when you could buy that card, then you got the golden seal token! Fixing that was honestly so cool because it felt like I was falling in love with a new game! Also, in Agricola, I didn't realize people don't take turns being first player--and my boyfriend actually prefers we ignore that rule, so we still aren't playing it correctly! :P

    • @BoardGameSanctuary
      @BoardGameSanctuary  Před 2 lety +2

      @@quibily Yes the Golden Seal Token is also a wild gem too!
      Sometimes it is better to play your own house rules as it matches your own preferred play style more. I always write a series of house rules for my favourite games and put them in the game box.
