Fwm
how many software's you learned yet
Exactly what i need right now. Thank you!!
One point in particular stood out for me: keeping the process a little loose and allowing some freedom in changes (even in the last steps). Coming from a one-man production mindset I always found it tedious to work down my task list when I started out "top down", structured everything beforehand and had the expectation to stick to it completely. Similarly to Olof I found that keeping some things open for happy accidents helps the long term motivation massively, as there are still things in the process to discover!
I respect the fact that you keep it honest while inspiring future animators to keep at it. One thing that sticks with me from another video Olof made is “ while practicing figure drawing why not make an animation with those sequences “. Much respect @ Olof
i love your videos because you encourage so many people to create something, something we are passionate about. you've helped me understand the inner beauty of animation and storytelling and i aspire to create something people can learn from. Thank you and keep it up! You're amazing!
I look forward to the rest of the videos, I always enjoy seeing how different creative people work and their methods. Oh and it should have its own playlist!
Ngl man I'm nowhere near ur level but u never cease to inspire me- heck, I did an extra credit project for class analyzing your animations, so in my eyes you're already one of the greats ❤️
Seeing this type of content and hearing from people like you encourages me to learn.
Your advice is grand and so helpful and well delivered, thank you!
You're the best animator i have ever seen , you are great
I learnt so much from you
You help so many people creating their projects and making their dreams and ideas come true . so, thank you very much
Thanks so much for this insight! I'm working on something myself and am currently in the writing stage; I totally get what you mean about forcing yourself outside to focus better. It's been really interesting seeing how you break down a project into scenes and shots, especially the stages of blocking! Really looking forward to more in this series in particular!
Thank you for the insight into your work process, I'm looking forward to the rest of the mini-series of your workflow(?)/process.
Thank you for this look at your process! As I just start off a journey into animation, this is incredibly valuable and inspirational! Coming from the world of live-action, there's a lot to learn. very excited! 🔥
Your animations are fantastic, and your voice is so calm, it's good to listen to it. Keep up the good work bro!
The music was really calming and actually helped me focus on your voice thank you for this video!
When it comes to planning a story, I'm an index card guy. Helps me a lot when generating new ideas and
stops me from getting anxious over my writing skills.
We love what you do, its so inspiring and helpefull
Your work is amazing. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Love everything about this. You the man!
This is amazing and so inspiring, I am so glad I found you. Your videos are so great!
I quickly liked just for the title! We need more of this!
...
Ok now I've seen the video I'm trying to hit like again. This helps clear up my head so much. Getting tangled up in big projects that never finish I get so frustrated sometimes. Good insight. Thanks.
Olof Storm excellent videos. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for showing this!
i am excited to witness this journey. all the best, good sir
Thanks for sharing theses thoughts, it's very conforting and inspiring! It is good to be reminded that making a film by yourself is a possible! Makes me want to dare too
very helpful! thank you and i'll be waiting for the next one!
Holy Cow! Being a climber as well, I am already excited to watch the final short film!
Hey olof your are a very passionate animator and teacher thank you for teaching us the way everything I know about animation is from you and your work is beautiful ,thank you very much btw great video!!!
Olof, ypur videos are so challenging to me. I realise that Ive been making excuses for myself for the last couple of years and this just opens my eyes to alot of tjings I can do with my limited resources. Thank you.
Really wonderful art! I wish that one day you can do this work full time. Your animations and inspirations make the world a better place
Beautiful. I'm going to absorb all I can from your experiences
I really liked you showing your pre-pro shot list and spreadsheet, would love a tutorial on a good way to make those
Thanks for sharing. Came up with a plan. Short 2 min that all add up to an entire story. Should take a year. Leaving myself a month per. Will definitely have to check out the rest of this series. Being my very first project I am certain you have a pile of insights I had never considered. Thanks fellah.
Just wanted to say thank you for your videos, although I do class myself as an artist, I am not an animator. However I have really enjoyed receiving your videos over the months, (they are always wonderfully calm, collected and inspiring) - I express this out of thanks and the knowledge of the effort involved in just sharing your craft, all the best to you and yours and look forward to the next ..:)
You have given me confidence again to reach my small animation projects. Thanks Brother and Please don't stop, making this kind of videos. Once in a while its better to upload this kind of video. Keep up the Great Work :) .
Here's a tip that I'm going to share with most animators who are doing this on their own. And that is to reduce the time from the standard and or traditional way! You don't need to follow what has been cemented in the traditional sense. What you need to do is reduce the time of your projects then and only then would you be able to manage it! For example if a episode is about 22 minutes long you want to reduce it not one time but three times 1/3 of the time that it takes to create one full animation one full episode of 22 minutes or basically 24 minutes.
Here's an example of what I'm talking about.
If you're working with a small team then you reduce the time to 11 minutes that's half of the 22 minutes that an episode usually runs for.
Now if you're working by yourself you reduce it yet again from 11 so that leaves you with 5.3 minutes.
Now you'll be able to tell your story how you want it we would have to make some sacrifices though and that is that a lot of these animated series have a bunch of fillers to the story that aren't really part of the store main story line kind of like one piece how there's so many different types of fillers before they get to the actual part for the fight well when it comes to this you're going to have to make some sacrifices there and probably reduce that a lot make it fast make it simple make it less! This is how we can adopt a new norm for solo Developers!
I am giving my thesis in animation and YOU ARE A BLESSING!
I really appreciate the knowledge you have, you are an inspiration, keep it up, I really like your work, successes !!!
Introverts rock! Totally identify myself.
as a 19year old who just got into the industry....this is soo helpful
Hi,
I must thank you from the bottom of my heart......all these years after having learnt animation about thirteen years ago and drifted through life without having done anything that satisfies me......today after watching this video I realized what I really like to do for life......this video has inspired me to even start writing a short sequence to animate on my own.
I dreamt imagined and longed to do something I liked to do but nothing materialised because everything remained as thoughts.
Now I know what I really like to do....... though I like all kinds of animation yet hayao miyazaki animation stood out for me......your animation is of similar style........I am not looking to please someone or make money out of my work or develop portfolio to get a job........yet I don't know why I didn't do it for all these years........now I will really start something small for self and finish it.......I Will share it here as well just as acknowledgement and gratitude to this video.
Thank you so much.......🙏
Amen! I am truly inspired also.
U r awesomeness. Thanx for this video. Very encouraging. Keep up the gr8 work
I just found your channel today, and it's been perfect for me. I'm working on my own film using clip studio paint and blender, so your process videos are extremely useful, even if we aren't working in exactly the same style.
Wonderful. Thank you. I have done some crude animations, stop motion, and I have toon boom studio, I hope to give it a go again someday with fresh programs, and a fresh approach, thanks for sharing !
Currently in my project, I'm stuck in the story writing process. I wrote the beginning with a series of events leading to part 2 but now I feel stuck because, this part will be going into the fantasy world. I had a general idea of what I wanted for the world but didnt REALLY work on it. I'm also undecided on the art style I want to use as well. For a few months I was set on anime, my problem is my characters look great, but my backgrounds don't lmao I think I'm going to start playing around with different cartoon styles to see what fits.
I like your pre-production process, for myself I will need to create storyboards as a base. It's great that you don't need to do that and still stay focused. Also I LOVE that excel sheet you have, can I use that for myself? I think staying organized that way will help a lot for me :) And thank you Olof! This is what I was looking for (commenting on another video yesterday with this question) ^_^
Thankyou .this series is to help me a lot.
I love your videos so please keep it coming. Beautiful stuff and the take away for me is that a one man band takes time (obviously) and having previous little experiences/projects makes a big difference. And of course, storyboards.
Wow, you've gotta subscriber outta me! I loved this so much. I'm nowhere near ready to do this, but it's exactly what I needed to see. Thank you!
Very encouraging video my friend. Thank you.
This is just so amazing ☺
Dude, your videos are Aweosme!!! You inspire me so much :)
Very very helpful video....lots of great advice here. I'm making my own animation short and needed to hear some of this. Thanks! :)
I really wanted to see a video like this. Thanks.
Thank you for sharing it. Many things got to learn..
Lovely video Olof! Very inspirational. And I love your accent and curvy thumb while you typing :P
This was great! I have so many unfinished projects because I annoyingly do things out of order. I'm going to try and actually 'finish'' my stories first because I tend to get lost along the way or lose momentum.
Thank you for sharing your experience!) These are important tips. I have long conceived a project. While inspired by your work.)
Thanks for sharing! Congrats from Brazil!
Loooove your animation style!
Truly inspiring. I'm wondering if you ever use video reference when animating characters? Your character animations look so lifelike.
Yes he does. It's a must thing for animation
Everyone should. It's a way to learn; at a point you won't need video refferences as much.
Great insight! Thanks for sharing!!!
your backgrounds are legendary
Cool stuff, thanks for sharing!
I am really glad that i found your channel.

Valuable knowledge 👌
Hello Olof,
I'm a 16 (almost 17) year old who wants to pursue animation as my career. I've just begun my first short film for my university portfolio that I hope to be accepted into in 2022. Art and animation are one of my most prominent passions and I thank you for your high-quality videos on the animation process and how you approach animation yourself. This is the start of everything and I thank you for your advice, this has even further inspired me to be the best artist and animator I can be. I hope to animate like you one day!
From an Artist with a dream.
Inspiring and informative!
I was going to make one for a while, thanks!

Inspiring ! thanks
love you man
You give me hope
It's helpful and amazing thanks 😊
It would be awesome IF you could make an in depth tutorial on how you do e.g. the 2d paint projection to 3d. Your channel is such an inspiration gold mine.
Nice, I enjoy your videos. I also am a solo creator, at least for now. I made my first 5 min short end of 2014, (I use Blender (but I love 2d and ah I can't wait to do more) and then in April 2015 I started a feature animation, a zombie apocalypse taking place in East Africa (I lived in Tanzania for ten years, I was there when I started it actually). Ok, last year I took a break to make 2 short films, just to put into practise some lessons I'd learned, and do something different. My goal is to be done animating 'soon'. End of May. I've committed to that. I liked watching this and could relate to so much. For the feature I have tons and tons of notes in notebooks, and it was good to have freedom to add new stuff as it occurred, or modify the script when i found some things didn't actually work in production. Many, many lessons. I did rough out storyboards sometimes, mostly for action scenes, as dialog I just composed on the fly. But for one of my shorts, 'Pigmeats', it's on my channel, I based it on a comedy improv done by my brother, so I first had to nail down the story, and then I thumbnailed it sort of, and then did an animatic, because if you watch it, there are many shifts in time and a lot of surprises so the timing was really important to nail donw, which I did in the animatic. After that I went into scene building and so on. This helped in this way because i also wanted to go fast. It was about 120 shots, and it's so crazy and I'm quite happy with it. It was also an experiment in directing more than doing absolutely everything, so I used every trick I could to cut corners. ok, enough of my noise. Keep it up, I love watching your work progress.
Something that scary me a lot about making a huge project on my own, it's the amount of disk space that you need. And the neccesity of a backup for that. I work with krita and blender on my laptop currently, but i need a good pc for go forward.
YES
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this!
