Sneak peek from Rodney Jerkins' "Inside the Track " series, in which he shows you how he produced the song "Hard Place" by H.E.R.
We’re excited to deliver our debut series with Rodney Jerkins! Also known by his stage name ‘Darkchild’, the urban music producer extraordinaire garnered two Grammy nominations for the featured record of this series - ‘Hard Place’ by H.E.R. Join Rodney at his Calabasas home studio for a walkthrough of how the soulful and gritty record was created.
He recounts the origins of the song and how the artist wanted a dirtier aesthetic to her acoustic guitar-based piece. Jerkins reveals how he infused hip-hop and soul elements by sampling beats from vinyl, adding crackle, 909 kick, Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and more. He shares his approach on how to enhance a song’s storytelling, elaborates on structure and arrangement, and examines the vocal parts. Furthermore, he explains how his production style has evolved and refers to his communication with the artist and mixer.

Diane V you can definitely make the argument that he’s up there with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis... I mean he’s literally got several songs on a Mary J album with Babyface and Jam & Lewis.... DarkChild is definitely in the realm of Jam & Lewis. He’s got a huge catalog of hits that he not only produced, but wrote. He ain’t Babyface, but he’s pretty close to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. You could also argue he’s closer to Timbaland, but I think Darkchild’s style is more in the realm of the Jam & Lewises of the world haha.
Nah! Jam and Lewis are in a league of their own. Not taking anything away from DC, he is talented, but JJ&TL are legendary.

You have to download “razor” from native instruments it’s in that expansion

Wrong. Rodney prolly should have put a lil Distortion on the bass like Decapitator or Fab Filter Saturn 2. Then it would put out of the phone or laptop. Sick bass sound tho!
@@stylzkeyz Wow. Someone knows a little something about music production. People weren't distorting their basses like that in the 90s, early 2000's though. Today, bass is crazy distorted.

There's a Glide option on the left side of Reaktor. Turn it to silver mode, portamento, and adjust the time setting.
