  • 2-06-1990. FYI: Master was almost an F grade, so this version is much improved even if not up to my usual standards. Blazers by 89/90 were a good team, that year's Western Finals participant. Every game against them for the next couple of years was a battle, and it's always hard for Laker teams winning in Portland, since time immemorial. I purposely left in moments where you could tell the refs were being cute and trying to make the game into a game for the ages. Magic Johnson was the 1990 NBA MVP.

    The passing and unselfishness of this Laker team is a fuckin beauty to watch. It makes me feel like I'm Ricky Fitts watching his floating bag and crying. My heart is about to cave in. It helps me remember....I have to remember...

      I just saw a doc on Muhammad Ali on HBO yesterday and I spotted Chick in the ring w/ the mic at the end of Norton/Ali 2 in 1973. It was held at The LA Forum, so it makes sense. He must've been the ring announcer. Chick was EVERYwhere in the day! We all wish he was born in 1950 so's we could all have him today. RIP Chick and Marge. And Duckworth. .Hell, and Jerome Kersey, and Cliff Robinson.

    39:40 - Magic Johnson, the most underrated clutch shooter in the history of basketball 💰

    • @nonplayerzealot4
      @nonplayerzealot4  Před 3 lety +1

      True, and I was thinkin/pondering something cogent. In 88 and 89, the Lakers still continued to defer to Kareem as The Kaptain, even tho he was no longer the 1A man on the team. This extends to 87, even, frankly. It is somewhat akin to Corrado being named Boss while Tony struts around as Underboss when he's actually the de facto Boss. Meanwhile, all the govt's heat goes towards Corrado/Kareem. What's your take on the cogence level of this theory, Davo?

      Also, Byron Scott, the most underrated COACH in the history of basketball. What do you say to that? Sound hypothesis, that?

    • @nonplayerzealot4
      @nonplayerzealot4  Před 3 lety

      Davo, watched parts of this again rite now. Your cogent Clyde clutch conclusion carries considerable courage cus clearly Clyde cowardly capitulated clutchness, crosscourting to Kersey, causing a culminating clank. Kersey clearly can't can Kobelike clutchshots. If you're the superstar on the team, you DON'T pass crosscourt like a hot potato to Kersey. Loved him on the Lakes despite his scalp, but he wasn't hittin no clutch shot.

      @@nonplayerzealot4 NPZ, here's what I'll say about Byron Scott. He coached the most exhilarating performance I have been blessed to witness in person - Kobe Bryant, 60 points, 4/13/16. I believe Byron's coaching that night was crucial, and I'll always be grateful to him for it.

    I don't recall seeing Magic foul out many times, NPZ. Turns out the Blazers have always been choke artists though. The refs gave Drexler and Porter every helping hand they could (DOUBLE the trips to the FT line!) and they STILL couldn't finish the boys off.

      @@DavoBirmingham2 Yep, as a 12 year old w/ much more cognizance of what he was watching than when he watched Jamaa Wilkes at age 2-7 like he has claimed in the past numerous times. At age 2, Kobe hated Drexler and was a huge Riley fan. He was glad when Westhead got dumped in 1981.

    This game went into OT, and the two teams played a 2OT game in Los Angeles a week later that the Blazers won! Of course, these teams played in the WCF's the following year with the Lakers winning in 6 games!

    Just peeped in full, not FF'd as in edit process. Great game by Myc T. One of his last excellent games, pretty much. He was a nonfactor after the first few months of the 91 season, his last.

  • @DavoBirmingham2
    @DavoBirmingham2 Před 3 lety +2

    You know, NPZ, it's interesting. Your recap does a great job of showing that Clyde Drexler had ZERO impact on the game in the final minutes of the 4th and the entire overtime. Surely with the MVP fouled out this would have been the perfect stage for him to shine on?
    This is not the first time I've seen this happen, Drexler playing hot potato with the ball and coming up small in a big game. Remember his Finals debut where he shot 5-for-15 with 4 turnovers? Or the Spurs' clincher in '93 when he went 5-for-16, didn't take a shot in OT and ran as far away from the ball as possible on the final possession? (The game's on CZcams, feel free to check it out.)
    Disappointing to say the least, but I suppose this is the difference between great players and truly transcendent superstars. Magic and Mike were the latter, Clyde was not.

      The Trailblazers did choke a lot. The only times they didn't were against San Antonio and Phoenix in 1990.

    • @DavoBirmingham2
      @DavoBirmingham2 Před 3 lety +1

      @@mikefolknation2851 Mike, you're right. Three times in Drexler's prime the Blazers had homecourt advantage and lost the series. Pretty damning stuff. Let's not forget Game 6 in Inglewood in '91 (the Magic ball toss game). Clyde wanted uhh, zero part of the last shot, flipping the ball away to Porter like a flapjack flipping flap ass. The team reflected its best player - brilliant, but lacking cojones and clutch genes.

      @@DavoBirmingham2 The Blazers' choking habits have been recession proof since time immemorial. Is that what you are attempting to convey in your aforementioned post, Davo? Are you saying that the Blazers and choking are one of only 3 recession-proof industries since time immemorial? 1) Certain aspects of Show Biz, 2) Our thing, 3) Blazers choking. Is that a correct analysis?

    I love the Lakers man, but they seemed uninspired here, settling for perimeter shots instead of slashing to the basket. Must be the time they were getting fed up with Riles.

    25:42 Riles to Mike Mathis: "Horse SHIT!...Make it a competitive game, Mike! Both sides!" Mathis was the ref that Chuck chased into the tunnel at MSG after Mike said somethin about Chuck makin money off of ejections or somethin, forgot. I know that Chuck was vexed by Mike since time immemorial. W/ Clyde, it was Jake O'Donnell. The NBA fired Jake (forced him out, more accurately) after a game where he boo-bopped Clyde with 2 quick Ts. Clyde made a big ol stink as if he should be allowed to say whatever the hell he wanted to refs.
