      I think there’s still vital work to be done in that field- it’s just that the approach needs to be tweaked. What was notable about Sasha Baron-Cohen’s very Brass Eye-inspired show “Who Is America” from a few years back was that while Chris would ask conservative MPs to condone obviously made-up issues like Cake etc., Cohen could get Republican Senators to support and campaign FOR his insane and made-up schemes (guns for toddlers, etc). So that sort of satire still has a place and has more power than ever. In this video he proves he’s still got it and his voice is still vital. Hearing him talk now is like finding water in the desert. But Chris seems to suffer from the same creative paralysis that caused Andre 3000 to stop rapping and only to communicate via flute. I wish I knew what wand I have to wave to get them back in the saddle and to put their bloody flutes down, so to speak

      There was such a lot of stuff that they got on the nose...or were extraordinarily prescient about...in Blue Jam, Jam (TV) and Brass eye...I think both Chris Morris and Armando Iannucci have continued to be very spot on...especially about the nature of 'rolling news' and the consequences of the 24 hour cycle...but I also thought that whilst 'Jam' was very horrifically 'surreal' (I used to be sort of fascinated and haunted by it when I was a teenager...especially the 'fuss, fuss, fuss, fuss, fuss' mortuary 'welcome', and I would stay up late into the night to catch it on channel 4) I think, although low key and more 'implicit' than actually stated, a lot of what Jam and Blue Jam was doing was commentating on the fragmented, isolated, shattered and actually quite sociopathic nature of our economic system and society at large in an extremely absurdist way...now the absurd has become actual reality completely!

    My neighbor and friend suffered a catastrophic stroke overlast weekend. she lives alone, is epeleptic, and has already suffered a stroke leaving her with very limited mobility last year. she had been laying alone in her living room unable to move for atleast 24 hours. if my ma hadnt climbed thru her window, worried after my neighbour hadnt responded to my ma's txts, my neighbour would have certainly died there, alone on the floor. shes not likely to recover, according to the hospital, who rang my ma asking HER if it was worth operating, because she had no "quality of life". they rang my ma asking her to act as next of kin because this woman, whos only 45 btw, had no one else in the world. where were her carers? where was the concern for her as a disabled person from the health service? they dont want give her an operation which could potentially sort her out, because coupled with her epiliepsy and other physical ailments, is a deep depression and "personality disorder". they let her almost die and shamelessly shifted the responsibility of her care and well being and her fucking life onto my ma. things are bad. having been treated for almost a decade for my own mental health issues ive become so jaded seeing services disappear and the nhs fall apart. ive had alot of different gps,and i can only say there was one of the whole rotten bunch who listered to me. the others i canf. i cojld rant on this for ages but i'll leaveit there;: i pray to god that my friend and neighbour survives.

    When I first told people I was planning to move abroad a common response was "what about the NHS?"
    What NHS? I pay all this tax to be put on a waiting list, or to have a 5 minute phone conversation with an overworked GP, forget a face-to-face meeting unless you are elderly or an infant. Everyone in between is left to fend for themselves.
    At this point I would rather pay insurance and be seen as a paying customer, instead of a resource drain that the NHS doesn't want to know.

    - appointments with police that say I AM RIGHT to whistleblow
    - 3 witnesses, police not spoke to any of them yet, refused to take details
    - refused to take laptop which contains evidence of wrongdoing

    The best GPs know their medicine ( not surprisingly) but have the ability to communicate in a down to earth manner. This is something sorely lacking in some GPs in Britain, especially those under 40. Medical schools really need to impress on trainees the importance of empathy and warmth to patients, which goes such a long way in making the relationship work. I have been astonished by the po faced, remote attitude of some GPs in recent years- something is clearly going wrong. In contrast, in France GPs are much more relaxed and affable in my experience. They are happy to chat and chew the fat for a few minutes, largely unheard of here. If they have not got compassion and empathy (people know it when they see it), they should do something else that is not public facing.

      I’ve yet to meet a GP that understands a proper diet, how to avoid diabetes, what fasting is and how it is good for you. In short they are some of the most unhealthy people I’ve ever met, they think getting on a drop handled bicycle and getting to work is healthy. GPs do not get educated these days on how to prevent anything only how to feed drugs to slow things down.

    • @fossil98
      @fossil98 Před rokem +26

      They probably start out like that, but your emotional circuits can only handle so much every day before burning out. Especially if any extra time spent on being warm or doing small talk eats into the time necessary to check boxes and hoop-jump.
      Basically, its less the people than its the system. I don't know if its true that older GP''s were taught more empathy but if so I'd guess that they learned it over decades (less stressful decades at that) of experience.

    • @TheAxeaman
      @TheAxeaman Před rokem +22

      Maybe because the British healthcare is under more stress? Just a thought. Empathy is also very taxing, I can say that as a former healthcare professional.

      @@ragetobe you nailed it! GPs spend the majority of their careers trying to reverse the ravages of metabolic disease. But they have very little deep understanding of what it is, nor how to prevent it. Most of these maladies begin decades before diagnosis and medicine is involved far too late to have any meaningful effect on reversing most people’s decline into unhealthy oblivion. Do you really think that the stiff arses on the panel realise the true importance of exercise, quality sleep, getting as far as possible from the standard American diet and maintaining good social networks. Modern medicine is really just the frontman for big pharma……kicking the can down the road, dishing out endless little white ones and watching over the steady decline in their punters health. Society expects too much from it’s doctors, who exude a veil of misplaced self-importance, seeming unaware of their own limitations.

    The kind of General Medical Practice I was involved in in the late 70s seems a far cry from the lack of service I now get as a patient as a nearly 70-year-old retired community paediatrician. Is it just the pressure of stupid HMG targets and protocols, or have GPs simply lost the ethos of family medicine, and care more about their remuneration and leisure time [sorry - work-life balance] than their patients and their vocation?

    Any particular reason why the UK trains half the doctors that Cuba or Greece do . Maybe they are richer countries ? Any particular reason why 2000 triple A grade A level holding students were turned away from medical schools in the UK? Have doctors ever gone on strike over this artificial shortage of doctors . Have the BMA ever voted against increasing the amount of medical students ( apart from in 2012 ? ) . Maybe the BMA think that less doctors per capita equal better health outcomes???
