Ja just shared this exact same sentiment in his recent interview with Kenny. He was asked "30 points or 20 assists?" Without hesitation, he said "20 assists. I feel like a lot of guys can get 30, but not everyone can get 20 assists. I like to involve and trust my teammates."

I think that the refs have relaxed the new rules quite a bit recently as well. Each game I have watched recently there have been soooo many fouls called and soooo many free throws. Even though scoring was down and we didn't see a lot of crazy performances earlier in the season I enjoyed watching the games more and I hope that they don't continue to call ticky-tacky fouls, especially in the playoffs

I definitely disagree with the statement that it would be a lot more entertaining to watch these players go for 50 every night. There’s a point where you just get desensitized to it. Also, as an NBA team going against these players, the key to winning the game just shifts to guarding the other four on the court a lot harder. If the stars are going to put up 70, why not shut down every one else. You can’t carry a game without your team and ultimately, it’s a lot more exciting to watch team basketball than a one man show.

one factor to consider is that we are close the end of the regular season and fatigue/injuries starts to have a bigger impact. It was already near impossible to defend the elites mentioned at the start of the season. Also this year was much more physically demanding given the new rules which could be yet another factor.
it would be interesting to see stats comparing defense vs offense at the start/end of seasons, how they trend over time, and how it compares with playoff season.
Whatever the factors are, 2022 has been the most entertaining season since 1998 Jordan days.

Wrong 2018 and 19 were way better than this season because players like Harden were scoring 40 and 50+ points almost every single game and they were red hot shooting the ball almost every night and not putting up so many shooting slump games like what's been happening to almost every Superstar in the League for stretches of games, weeks and months this whole season plus there were no Play in Tournament's back then like there are today and players were allowed to lean into defenders and initiate contact back then which we can no longer do in today's game which has made the game worse because it's already bad enough that players are afraid to play defense because playing defense has become a foul and now since players can't initiate contact to get to the Free Throw line anymore players are now becoming afraid of contact and not even trying to drive to the basket as much anymore because the refs are either going to call an offensive foul on them or let the play keep running even on plays that should be called a foul.

8:26 I’m sorry, but this is a very flawed point. When looking at games that Durant scores more than 30 points, one could reasonably assume that he scored 30+ points because he shot well. In other words, one could assume that KD scored 30 because he attempted more shots, yes. But more relevant is that he attempted more shots while maintaining the efficiency that allows him to consistently score 20+ points. All this to say that you’re looking at the wrong thing. What you should be looking at is what are Durant’s splits when he shoots less than 20 shots (his per game average this year), and 20 shots or more. With a little research, one can find that KD shoots 56% from the field, and 45% from three when he takes less than 20 shots. He shoots 50% from the field, and 34% from three when attempting more than 20 shots. Yes, Durant scores more when he takes more shots. That much is obvious. But a 6% reduction in field goal percentage, and an 11% reduction in three point percentage is exactly why players play the way they do. Durant averages 20 shots a night because it’s the sweet spot between scoring a lot, and optimizing his efficiency. It’s not like KD can consistently shoot 23 shots and maintain the efficiency he scores with when attempting 20 shots. That’s why he doesn’t shoot more than 20 shots every single night.

Obviously the players would have known of this change before the season’s start and had been practicing with it throughout the offseason, then you plus on all of the regular season games and reps in between games, etc. It makes sense for a change of ball to have an impact on a players shot but I don’t think what we’re seeing now this late into the season is influenced greatly by the change.

    There's an easy solution
    Restructure how points are distributed
    OFFENSE:
-3 point line becomes the half point line. Shots behond the line award 2-1/2 . Shots within the line remain 2 points.
-Baskets made within the paint area are now 3 points
-Assists are a half point. So a kick out to the perimeter is again a 3 point shot. An assist in the paint is 3-1/2 points.
    DEFENSE:
-Blocked shots are awarded 2 points. Blocks behond the perimeter earn 3 points
-Steals are 1 point. So a steal resulting in a breakaway dunk is a 4 point play
    FOULS:
-Freethrows are reduced to 1 with the exception of flagrants

Shooting more also means having to stay more time on the court and make a greater physical effort. Besides efficiency tends to drop when you are tired. I don't think it would be viable for players nowadays having to play 48 minutes in order to score 50 points every game when there are players who don't even play back to back games for example or can just play 30 minutes a game.

Nice video, very informative. Agree with most of what you are saying. One aspect I don't agree with would be so many players being able to average 40 points a game for a season. The major hurdle to doing this is fatigue and injury in my opinion. Another aspect is team's would focus even more heavily on double teams. When I see analysis on extrapolation and then saying Kobe could have scored 100 when he scored 81 its not so easy. Is it possible? Maybe, but let's not disregard how much harder it is to score 19 more points after scoring 81 points. Fatigue plays a major role in this. This is why Wilt averaging over 48 minutes a game in one season is likely one of the most unbreakable records ever and is also underrated in terms of how hard this is to achieve (especially since he was an elite player and not a role player).

Didn’t further the point by clarifying that KD’s 53 and 51 were in games where Irving didn’t play; or that Irving’s 60 and 50 were on ridiculous efficiency (that you wouldn’t be able to keep up for a season) which likely lead to Durant taking a back seat those games.
Also in the case of the Nets - they were expected to be a top team in the East and contending for a Championship, but are currently seeded 8th, with two teams hot on their heels.
Likewise many of the other players trying to keep a spot for the Play-in, solidify a playoff spot, get home court advantage, build momentum etc.

Moreover, points scored is a function of two factors: field goal / free throw attempts and field goal / free throw percentage. That his efficiency is practically the same in both columns is perhaps related to the fact that efficiency is one of the factors that affects points scored.

I’ve been having this same thought. Watching LeBron go from facilitating the offense to running it is a perfect example. He could give you 40 or 50 every night but when he knows his team is capable he’ll try to get everyone involved as much as possible.

Nah it isn’t just about putting up shots. A lot of those performances they were shooting way above their averages.
Ja shot 73% overall with 100% on 3s.
Lebron shot 61% overall, 55% on 3s, and 92 fucking % on 13 free throws.
    Tatum shot 53% overall, and 53% on 15 3s.
    Kyrie shot 79% overall, and 75% on 12 3s.
    Lebron shot 72% overall, 67% on 9 3s, and 100% on 8 free throws.
KD’s 53 point game is the first one where it was mostly about how many shots he took.
    Trae shot 65% overall, 70% on 10 3s, and 100% on 14 free throws.
Trae’s 46 point night was just shooting a lot.
    KAT shot 61% overall, 64% on 11 3s, and 94% on 16 free throws.
    Steph shot 64% overall, and 50% on 14 3s.
    Kyrie shot 65% overall, 67% on 12 3s.
    Bey shot 63% overall, and 71% on 14 3s.

But even shooting above average was intentional for them. Look at all them games. You see that in every one the player not only more deliberate and more locked in, but they actually taking advantage of their hot hands. Like catching the ball and attacking asap. Not looking for a play cause the already know they’re the play and they taking it.

You think they turned a switch that allowed them to shoot 65-70% and they intentionally don’t have that switch flipped every game? 😆
Also hot hand is a fallacy. You only acknowledge it when it seems to be working but ignore all the times someone might be streaky and then misses. Averages are averages for a reason. And with law of large numbers they become more accurate. If someone has a 15 year average of being a 50% free throw shooter, they don’t become 90% free throw shooters for extended periods of time. Same for 3s and 2s.
The crazy hot games are the opposite side of the coin where they have shit games. Like Curry scoring 8 points on 17 shots.

@@Frostshokula nah I don’t think it’s a switch they turn on a switch… but let’s nit act like the phrase don’t have its evidence.
Anyone with a talent they can lock into know that sometimes on a good day, shit is just easy and when you recognize it, shit gets even easier. So once you hit a few shots and they go in, maybe that day you feeling good and you can lock in to be great.
Also your reply ignore the long known fact that these players don’t always play serious. We all heard of load management and heard Bron, the goat candidate himself say he don’t take reg season serious. Heard Bron himself use the phrase about cutting on the switch and he has been able to do it a few times on que. so has MJ been able to “flip the switch” with player stories and fan stories to back it up. We’ve heard stories of greats telling other players how many points they’d put on their heads.
So you also ignoring some facts that numbers can’t account for.

You mean when he activated playoff mode and missed the playoffs 3 years ago 😂
No one locks in and chooses to shoot well. It just happens.
I never said players don’t take the regular season easier. But higher intensity doesn’t see a marked increase in shooting %. For instance, Lebron’s true shooting % is slightly lower in the playoffs than in the regular season. In fact, most players are like this. Chalk it up to better defense probably, but it certainly isn’t because they aren’t focused enough in the playoffs. It’s straight luck. If it was only a focus/intensity thing, we’d see more of it cuz there are players out there who play hard no matter what.

    • @zaybrielclanton
      @zaybrielclanton Před 2 lety

@@Frostshokula it’s definitely chopped up to better defense. That’s already been said plenty and I’m not saying they just choose to shoot well. I’m saying they’re noticing when they’re shooting well and instead of bullshitting and going through the motions like they do some games, they lock in. That makes their percentage higher. It’s easy to see when players like KD or Bron try to lock in cause they usually play down to their teammates but go back and look at Bron last game from Cleveland… can’t tell me he ain’t doing that shit on purpose. His fades even had more swag to it.
Not something any player can do, but plenty greats describe it.
