Ima be honest this goes to another player for me, but lebron is definite a legend but I don't see him up there with the greatest. I never saw him as a true ball player I just saw someone that played within the rules of the NBAs version of the WWE. When I think of ball players I think of Jordan, Kobe, Iverson, Steve Nash, nawitzki, magic, etc etc etc.

Jxmmy is the goat of yt nba content but i disagree with this one. have you noticed stokton and malone's games played numbers. They are two examples of players that played non stop for almost 20 years. Think about the medical technology developing. Taller players last more bc they have this advance. Also think about the evolution of 3pt line. Look at the all time top 10 points leaders and notice how many 3pts half of them have scored. You see where this is going. One day, not so far from today a guy will step in have the playing longevity of today and even more as the med will provide (combined with his athletic state). Also when the organisation will choose the 4pt line will be there. i think Lebron will probably be the first breaking the 40,000 pts limit but the next one may break the 50,000 as we already have guys like steph, luka, trae, damian etc that are capable of scoring from such an extreme distance today. So what is expected is that one guy who will have the bag, distance scorring ability, physicallity and motivation. All that are in the hands of the nba organisation. If they wanna let the next point leader to be they will make rules that lead to softer defence and more productive offence. If they don't they will make the defence even harder. At this point i think non of them are necessery as the game have the attention needed. But economic crises may lead to a bad turn. If the game needs more attention meaning more money then something extrordinare have to happened and it will. And besides the bad ref calls i dig Adam Silver's work as much as jxmy's. Nba is in good hands.
@@user-zd9vy4nw1e lets have a healthy discussion on this one, you have a great point on medical advancement and with better nutrition these days, if there is one kid who is genetically good with good nutrition, proper training and with medical advancements that can omit injury, the chances of him becoming the next scoring leader will also be steep, cause he needs the psychological state as Lebron, the love and determination he has on the game to maintain and play for 20 years, other factors that affects current players like kyrie is mental state, and for this there is no "advancements" that can help, it's all based on how much the player wants it, and let me tell you my friend, is even rarer than the best genetics can give you to have a mentality like that, what are the chances that someone that can play well, play long and maintain not only your skill, but your mentality for decades. Not in our lifetime I suppose, and I hope that happens because it will be a phenomenal player to watch.

Not only was he a capable score from Day One, and started at age 18, and avoided major injury for most of his career, he was also in a situation that allowed him to score like crazy from the get-go. Everything worked out in service of LeBron breaking this record.
Ya but longevity is more of a testament to how he treated his body and kept it healthy, most top draft picks are in a situation to score from the get go, they just don’t stay healthy or have the longevity of determination of king James

Unless the league changes significantly (adding 4 point or 5 point lines, increasing mins per game, adding more games to a season, officiating changes etc...), this can't be broken at my lifetime. With scoring talent like Jordan, Kobe, Malone etc..and changes in how the games played and officiated, and it still took someone decades to surpass Kareen's record. No way anyone is breaking this without a bunch of external factors.
I bet the player who'll do that is already born. See you in 40 years ;)

Yet, 40 years later, here we are.

Of course, Curry will still be considered the GOAT shooter by many people, even if (when) someone breaks his 3Pt record.
Just because he impacted and changed the game, and did it better than anyone before, when nobody was doing it.
And Lebron's record is sure way harder to beat.
But still, the evolution of the game makes it so that there are probably a few players that will beat Curry's record in the next 15 to 25 years.
This reminds me of a fascinating story, of a man you may have heard of, called Roger Bannister:

The interesting part is that, after he did, a lot of athletes around the world started doing it as well.

And a thousand followed until now.
Roger Bannister had just made the impossible, well, possible.
I understand Lebron's record is a different situation, but my point is, someone probably, eventually will beat his record.

The double digits in 1140 straight games is the most impressive to me. Luka got hurt in the first quarter of a game last month without having scored, and that killed his streak. Amazing that something like that never happened to lebron
Some players get lucky with lack of injuries. Lebron is like that, as was Jordan, who in his prime, only had 1 major injury, and that kept him out for like 60 games.
For whatever reason, some guys are almost immune to them, while others get bit the by injury bug.

One of my favorite Lebron facts is that when he got injured in 2021 for a couple months he only had 7 points in the game. However, as he was limping up the court they passed him the ball in the corner where he hit a one legged three to get 10 points and then subbed out. Also when he got ejected the one time in his career against the Pistons, he had exactly 10 points 😂

Been a LeBron fan since 2008 and this is crazy man. As a kid I never understood the stats, but I always heard Bron being the youngest to break scoring records. Never thought I would see the day someone would not only pass, but obliterate Kareem's scoring record.

I think his longevity must be taken into account. He took down raptors during the mesozoic era and was still around to defeat the celtics during the medieval period, giving him a career of well over 65 million years as a major world power. Some may point towards his inability to defeat large, highly trained troops of warriors in the series of wars from 1015-1018, but they fail to account for the fact that the range of their curry, as well as their natural gold reserves gave them a significant economic advantage, which was how they were able to dominate the third and fourth years of the war. However, I do think Jordan's ability to defeat the power of not just one sun, but several suns is a more impressive feat than Lebron defeating thunder itself, although victory against a force of nature is always tough.

With today's load management trend, these 2 are absolutely unbreakable records:
1) Wilt Chamberlain played 3,882 minutes on the court in 1961-62.
2) AC Green played in 1,192 consecutive games over 16 seasons.
The truly unbreakable records are ones that the current rules and meta of the game will not allow a player the opportunity to break it. Those are two good examples of it.

Really great video! The statistics and comparisons were super helpful in showing just how insane this record is. I personally see LeBron playing more than four more seasons because he has also hinted at wanting to play with Bryce as well.
I'd argue the record he's held already with combined regular season and playoff scoring may be even more unbreakable. Because not only do you need to be individually great, but your team needs to be consistently great to make deep playoff runs almost every year.
So true. Its crazy how little press that record gets compared to the regular season one.
Because not all teams can compete in the postseason and not all series consists of the same amount of games, so sweeping a team impact your playoff total.

Given LeBron isn’t done - 40,000 is a very real possibility and 50,000 combined Regular and Post Season isn’t out of the question - I think the most realistic case for someone beating it is massive rule changes, something stupid like adding a 4-point shot
I believe that dating back to Wilt there has been legitimate candidates to beat the All-Time record. It is very likely that no one in the league at the time of LeBrons retirement will be close to 1. being on track, and 2. have a realistic chance to last long enough to beat it.

Only one of his Lakers years (19-20) would see him eligible for All-NBA based on recent changes (although this may push him to play the more games.
Even 4 point shot wouldn't change anything. Nobody will ever brake Lebron's all time scoring record.
What you have to consider is that when that article came out of who had the best chance of breaking the record people emphasized that theyd have to keep a similar trajectory for years without injuries and little drop off which many deemed impossible, I think it’s more impressive when you had people like Colin Cowherd say that LeBron’s superstar career would’ve start to decline nearly a decade ago in 2015 when he turned 30, the biggest emphasis is that anyone can “disqualify” it by saying “it’s just a longevity record” but if you lived through the ups and downs of his career and you’re not a hater than you can admit the greatness of this record, from the many careers that could’ve been and where derailed by injuries LeBron is one of the few greats. As I become older I appreciate the game more than just the players, so I really look forward to see the rise and journey of the next great whoever it will be

I'm from Cleveland, and I'll never forget the moment we found out the Cavs won the number one pick (which of course would be Lebron). My parents were inside watching, I was out on the driveway playing on our hoop (which was on a huge slope) and suddenly I started hearing huge screaming and yelling from inside the house. I was 8. I couldn't understand why they were so excited. The winning of the pick that would be LeBron is one of my earliest, solid memories
13 years later I got to watch CLE win the championship from inside the Q. I somehow got tickets from a friend. It was probably one of the most magical moments in Cleveland history.
Hoping to see LeBron come back next year and bring it all full circle

If total points includes playoff games, that's a chunk of points for LeBron there too. The consistency of LeBron getting a team deep in the playoffs almost every year is also just as impressive.

Adjusted for pace no player comes close to MJs numbers, not even James Harden and he has been the best scorer of this generation about to retire.
He just hit 39,000 points. He's still averaging 25+ a game. He'll retire with well over 40k. Nobody is ever touching this record. I'll put my entire life's savings and everything I own on that.

Not only is it the luck and talent required to even get close to this record but the will and desire to do it. They asked luka about the record and he said he doesn't want to play 20 years. Lebrons game isn't just a testament to his skill but his love for the game. He wanted it. He wanted it more than anyone else in the history and future of the nba. No one will ever match this. No one.

As Jxmy said a player will have to come into the league already playing at a high level, not scoring 18 points his first 2 seasons until he gets acclimated. For those that did not see LeBron play the year he got drafted, he was expected to score 20+ a game for the Cavs and he did, and it went up from there. @@renstein8210 that really is the perfect circumstance which will probably never be replicated, he had to have the ability to score over 20 points right away at 18 years old and few players ever were that talented at 18. I can see a player having a chance if they switch to what Europe does which allows players to go pro at 16, at 16 they'd not be expected to do much but they will have a couple of years to grow and maybe they will have a chance to be scoring at LeBron's level at 18. I really think the NBA should have some kind of program to start developing the best young players in the country/world by age 15 or 16.

The only way I see this being broken is if they allow 18 year olds to enter again combined with advances in the health field which we have seen even in the last 10-20 years. If they could prolong athletes careers from mid to late 30s to early to mid 40s that’s when it will happen. But even then the odds will be slim to none
Lebron also played heavy minutes most of his career, with load management a young superstar will probably not even be allowed to play that many minutes. Especially since they are getting paid way more at a younger age, it's a liability and financial risk for the organization

Another point which helped to propel LeBron's scoring was that his first several seasons in the league, his Cleveland Cavs had very minimal additional scoring options, so despite his desire to pass often he was required to take it upon himself to score. This situation will likely need to some degree be replicated for a player to surpass Lebron's career coring mark.

One of the biggest issues I see about catching Lebron is this trend of increased load management. I don't ever see it going away because teams value the playoffs over regular season volume. Because of that I don't see how anyone ever breaks Lebron's scoring record.

I drove from Houston to Dallas to watch my first live NBA game ever yesterday and man... what an experience. To see these players live on the court is so different. Luka, Kyrie, AD... but especially to see LeBron was amazing. An experience I am glad I finally got to have. And boi what a great game that was. I also got to see some of these fouls and even no calls on players that on t.v. look like nothing... yea no, these dudes do get hit pretty hard going into the lane when you see it in person. I wish I was old enough/in a better financial situation back when Kobe and Dwade were playing to see them live at least once too. Bron, Kobe and Dwade were my favorites ever to watch play. Started seriously watching the NBA around 05/06. Also it was interesting seeing the crowd react to LeBron live. You could tell his presence was felt around the arena. No joke. People love watching him play. When the game started it was all types of heckling that you would see on social media, you know the typical "cry baby" or "LeFraud" etc.. but you could tell they really do enjoy him being on the court. End of the game it was all cheers and excitement and running as close to the court as possible to get pictures and videos of him. Even the people who claim they hate him really do love him. It's hard to tell from social media but in person you see LeBron is really at that stage of his career where everyone is deep down a fan

It won't be easy, but someone could eventually pass Lebron as long as nearly every factor that has contributed to Lebron's record happens again. Lebron has really been a beast at taking care of himself physically, but if a player who is similar but with a higher 3pt and FT % can manage to stay healthy and play 20 ish years it's possible, but not probable

This reminds me of the fascinating story of Roger Bannister:
Before 1954, most sports specialists had come to the conclusion that no human being could ever run a mile in less than 4 minutes.
People wanted to do it since probably at least 1886, everybody had tried, and yet nobody had ever succeeded, in about 70 years chasing that record.
Because it was simply "impossible".
Then comes the 6th of May, 1954, and against all odds, Roger Bannister does run a mile in less than 4 minutes, for the first time in history.
Cool story, right?
So what?
Well, that's not the interesting part.
The interesting part is that, after he did, a lot of athletes around the world started doing it as well.
The same year, in 1954, someone beat his 3:59 time.
The next year, three other guys beat them...
In the same race.
And a thousand followed until now.
In 3 minutes and 59 seconds, Roger Bannister had just made the impossible, well, possible.
He "made God bleed".
Of course, I understand Lebron's record is a different situation, but my point is, someone, eventually, will probably beat his record.
Because a lot of these crazy records often seem impossible to beat at the time, until someone inevitably does.
It's the nature of human evolution.
But I might be wrong, as often.

There's another side to this story, that's that through out history major breakthroughs in technology and sports both occur around one another often. Like the telephone was invented by multiple people working independent of each other during a similar window. Sports a similar thing occurs where when it's time it's time and many hit the new plateau separate of one another. I love the story you've shared here and am familiar with it
It just takes someone to break the mold
The 4-minute barrier is a bit mythologized. Those within the sport considered 4 minutes to be less impossible and more overdue when Bannister made his run. If not for WWII culling and distracting a generation of athletes, plus Sweden's Anderson and Hagg receiving bans from competition, the barrier most likely falls years earlier. Until those two events the record was falling incredible fast, from above 4m 10s as late as 1931 to 4m 1s in 1944. Not exactly indicative of a record with a mental barrier. Compare that to the 100m and Long Jump, which saw Jesse Owen's records remaining unsurpassed for 20 years since the mid-1930s in disciplines that drew much heavier competition.
I think the difference there is athletic capability evolving for a chance to do the extraordinary in one race at the height of a runner’s career. The scoring record isn’t just about the game’s evolution, it take’s timing, skill, and luck to be that good, that young, and for this long. It’s like Cal Ripken’s game’s played record.
It’s going to be a sad day when Lebron retires, I’m glad I’ve got to see his career. The impact he’s had is unbelievable.

It naturally shifted to more offense because of the rule changes. For example, making hand checking illegal in 2005. Less physical means more scoring.

Nah... it would honestly take a steph like player who stayed super healthy and played 20+ years. But now with all the numerous stars on one team.. one player isn't required to do the things LeBron had to do on the cavs the first 7 years of his career. He may not be a 35ppg average player.. but hes been a 25-30ppg and done it for 20 years. Only players his age are on the bench or on their couch.. he's still putting up 20+ in playoffs games at 38 years old without putting in too much effort.

His playoffs tenure and scoring should be taken into consideration here as well. Not only he played for 20 seasons, but most of them were deep playoff runs, and half of them were Finals runs. No current player is anywhere close to breaking his Playoffs scoring record, a record he already set years ago.
That is what irks me. No one is talking about the total scoring! He score 7500, and MJ is 2nd at 5900. That by itself is an impossibility to break! The guy NEVER missed a playoff game while his team is in it. He missed playoffs for 4 seasons. I guess the new player to break his record can exploit that I guess.

I always taught my kid when he got into sports that defense players are THE unsung heroes in all of sports. Imagine a poster shot of Reggie Miller denying Michael Jordan the ball. You'll never see it, but that's how the Pacers nearly dethroned the Bulls in the epic '98 eastern conference finals.
Can’t really include anyone who guarded Jordan because Jordan got the most preferentially biased treatment of any player in nba history. I’ve watched almost every game of Jordan’s, the amount of fouls that were called on his defender without actually touching Jordan are ridiculous. If you out a percentage on that amount I’d say about 60% of Jordan’s foul calls are phantom calls. Possibly higher.
