    The first one was designed built and paid for by Tommy flowers, before the war he was working on a design for automatic telephone exchanges and realised it could be used for code breaking etc

      ​@@twinscrollturbo4410 except alan's bombe and the polish bombe worked on completely different principles and ideas .
      And after 1 may 1940 when germans made an upgrade to enigma machine and the
      Polish bombe relied on the Germans repeating the same three-letter key setting twice at the start of the message, was rendered useless
      So brits and turing had to start designing new stuff
      The much more complex Turing bombe searched for contradictions in the actual message text, based on a known or guessed segment of plaintext. It worked regardless of how the key settings were sent. The operating principles were completely different.

      You are confusing the Bombe machine with the first electronic programmable computer Colossus (built by Tommy Flowers). In fact the Polish were the first with an early version of the Bombe.
