  • Ok, ok - let me just say this first. I have no idea what I'm doing and I'm winging it. But: I'm open to suggestions! My goal is to be able to re-paint some sets with some completely custom figures. I'll be modifying many of these with polymer clay, creating new molds and recasting unique figures out of solid resin. Hit me with your ideas!

I did this professionally for about 8 years and have a couple of tips for ya! You will have much better results if you orient your Polly differently within the mold so that you’re pouring into the flattest part of her body, while the mold is already assembled. So, pour into her feet and her hips. You won’t lose any of the original detail this way. Look up “How to make a two-part mold” by Tap Plastics on CZcams and it will give you a much better idea of how to make molds for 3D figurines. It is so much easier to sand the castings, and any air bubbles will sand off easily and be more hidden. Additionally, when you’re making the molds, you can make extensions on the pieces with cured polymer clay. (So picture a short cylinder added to the bottom of her feet.) If you get an air bubble, it will be in the extension piece you added, which you’ll cut off. If you want some more advice, I’m more than happy to help!

I love this! Looks like the beginning of a wonderful project which I can't wait to see 😊 I'm sure a custom compact with your own custom figures would look amazing 🤩

So cute and fun. Great job so far! I have dabbled with resin and am also just a beginner... I use a self healing mat under a very similar mat that you use. I use it so that I can "shimmy" the mold to softly shake the molds... saw someone else do this. It just provides a sturdier base. You just want to gently shake/shimmy the mat to help move the air bubbles. Might give it q try. Good luck!!

Aw yay! Molding and casting is so much fun. Maybe when you need to make more molds in the future you should try the Sorta Clear silicone. I'm not sure how much that would help for such teeny pieces, but being able to kinda see into the mold could potentially make a difference. I can't wait to see what you get up to with these!
Also if you want some resources about molding and casting, I would recommend both CrafsMan and Rybonator. Rybonator makes dice but I think his videos are still useful outside of dice making

I would also recommend if you're planning on making any sculpted additions to your figures that you use something like milliput or epoxy sculpt rather than polymer clay. They work similarly to resin where you mix two parts together and they harden on their own over time, so you don't have to risk damaging the resin by baking it. You can get some little containers of epoxy sculpt on amazon. I would personally recommend that over milliput because it tends to be softer like clay

Thank you for this! I don't know if this will work for my (non-Polly) applications, but it's so tempting to pick this up! I loved seeing your process.
The messed up figures can definitely be used for paint test later!
Have you considered just drawing an arrow on the outside of your star mold and base in order to line it up more efficiently every time?
P.-S. I love your makeup in the intro. Happy holidays!

Thank you for this video!! So helpful for us diy-ers! Could you do a video of how you cast the figures? I've tried and have no success!

This was SO fun to do - I will absolutely be doing a video about how to make the molds, just waiting on my handy-dandy fancy new mold tool coming in the mail supposedly tomorrow!

There's one channel I watch that does some casting and the hostess of that uses a flame to pop the bubbles, though the example I saw this on used clear resin, you might be able to use a drop or two of resin from your next batch to fill in the faces of any that didn't turn out beyond the ones being used for your project too
