To me, the great and unique thing about Polly Pocket was the portability and convenience. It was a tiny dollhouse that you could take with you, like in the car or to a doctor's office or something. There was nothing else like it. I used to bring them to school all the time. Once they stopped making the compacts and made it a bigger doll, they missed the point. They used to be unique and different and they decided to change it to be like everything else, for some reason.

I love the Bluebird compacts. I always loved the pastels and liked how many of them were just revolving around Polly having a normal day-to-day life, you know, living in a cute house, maybe having a job (I remember a zoo one with a panda), going to a fun fair once in a while or something. Either that, or they went full escapism, and Polly would be a princess or a fairy. I hated the taller ones as a kid, and I don't like the new ones either, the colours look garish to me and I'm just not into that whole "fashion queen pop star" thing. And as you said, all the small details that made the original Bluebird sets worthwhile, are gone. Mattell really took a wrong turn there, in my opinion.

I grew up with the fashion polly pocket like the 2002-2005 sets especially. I remember how much I loved them and I had a little airplane set that I loved so much. Only got to know the earlier polly pocket versions from the 90s through my childhood best friend who had sets left from her older sisters. And she had that disney Cinderella polly set and a kind of fairy playset. I always thought they were so cool, though I didn't understand why you couldn't change polly clothes etc. Personally think a mix of the fashion polly with the intricate playset designs from the 90s would be perfect. Also I had a click limousine and that was super fun!

I think the last think I got was the 2007 advent calendar. I can't exactly pinpoint the other stuff I had cause my friend and I swapped stuff (that's how I'm in possession as a quick click doll and some outfits).

The 80’s Polly hits the nostalgia so hard for us millenials. Those sets where amazing and the aesthetics it’s so beautiful, they have never reach that level with the new lines. And funny enough it’s seems like the bigger Polly gets her world become smaller.
That’s my concern about the movie, because the doll line doesn’t have a story line, the interesting part about Polly it’s how small she is and her world, how could they translate that into a movie?

I've always loved the idea of small dolls
I was born in 2000 so I grew up with Fashion Polly, I loved her as a kid, but now I have reevaluated her, she was just a miniature Barbie, especially when she had brushable hair
The rubber clothes pulled her away from what made her unique
So I love the 2018 reboot, they restored the original concept of pocket playsets with a modern twist for today's kids
I find the new playsets super cute
True, the first dolls of 2018 had rubbery legs to stick them to the playset, but now they have changed them, they are entirely plastic and articulated at the shoulders, waist and hips
I don't like the idea of a live action film about Polly at all, it makes sense for Barbie (in fact, the 2023 film with Margot Robbie is absolutely necessary to revive her image and allow Mattel to make a Barbie reboot with a new face, 2000s body, high quality and returning to the glam and elegance of old times ) but Polly Pocket in live action seems trash to me, we don't need it

I didn’t grow up with the original Polly Pocket play sets and I was born in 2006. However, I grew up in the 2010s and owned a couple of the Fashion Polly dolls with the rubber clothes. I feel like due to the immense success of the Barbie film, Mattel is going a bit overboard with live action films based off toys. I do agree with you on all of your points: I’m impressed with Polly Pocket’s reboot because the brand went back to its roots and modernized its compacts to appeal to a younger demographic, Fashion Polly reminds me a lot of Mattel’s #1 selling doll, Barbie and I’m skeptical about how this Polly Pocket live action film will turn out. Some things you need to leave alone

so I was born in 2000 and I only had the rubber clothes dolls and a Lucy Locket house (basically a Kelly sized Polly Pocket style house. Lucy Locket was also made by Bluebird.) I had no idea what the original Polly Pocket was until Hot Topic announced they were collabing with the brand. The purses were heart shaped over the shoulder bags and the inside looked like a compact house. I was so confused cause I had never seen that version of her before.

The supermini compact Polly's were ICONIC, but man the rubber gummy clothes from the early 00's were a GENIUS revamp. It's a pretty radical transition when you think about it and it totally worked. I loved my compact Polly's but the gummy clothes one was perfection. I never had a bad collection/Pack. Also, the Polly Holiday pack brought me back, I had that one!! My favorite outfit was the pink glittery evening gown with the furry shawl!! But I totally agree, bring back the pastels. I can't stand these limited palettes with garish magentas and purples.

I actually had the Japanese tea house - I always thought it was a medium-posh restaurant, though. Then I also had this show? or wedding chapel thing? The flower shop. The heart -shaped with the lady and the pets. The castle. I also had an island one. A jungle one. A more Fairy one... . A clock one, soap dish swimming pool,
make up - box with handle, pencil case house, a lot of different lockets, particularly schools and nursery, and common houses. PollyVille favourites: sleepover, school (the basketball hoop would be easily to break down on that set), hospital and toy shop and pet shop. Not to forget that you could buy the rings and individual items. Like the camper van with the bike and boat. The good thing about the locket Polly Pockets: they didn't take up much space. I would have liked the dolls to be a bit more flexible or movable though. But apart from that the tiny doll house approach was so liked.

This video is Amazing 🤩☺️ Thank you ☺️ as a little side note there was beside Bluebird and Mattel a 3rd companie that had the licence for Polly Pocket. It was the companie Bandai that had the Angel Pocket. Short Bluebird was for the UK market, Mattel for US, Europe market and Bandai for Asian Market. Under collectors in US/Europe the Angel Pockets are really searched while in Asia the others are really searched 😅 and at some point the Angel Pockets looks acording to the color sceme a little cuter than the other but that is personal opinion 😂
Also in 2018/19 Mattel started the launch from the Keepsake collection. A rekame from the Vintage ones. There is a Keepsake made in 2019 (30th aniversary from Polly) 2021 Keepsake Starlight Castle, 2022 Keepsake jewelry and Mermaid. (Jewelry is remake from the Vintage the Mermaid is a new Compact)
The Mermaid one still not avalable in Europe😬 hope for it at Christmas time🙏
AND in 2020 Mattel did reuse the Dolls with the hinge instead of the sticky feet. That means at 2020 Mattel did create new Compacts with the hinged dolls that went up to the collectors😂
As a Polly collector (and Barbie addict) the newer Pollys first were controversal because the details that we love in the vintage ones are often missed in the ones 2020-2022. BUT they are starting gettin better at that and so I have to say that I start liking some of the newer ones 😅 which is sad for my wallet😂
And I'm exhited to find out which Compacts or maybe Keepsake Mattel is creating for 2023🤩

Bluebird miniature Pollies were amazing, they are my favorite childhood toy with the exception of videogame consoles. They were so well-made and rich in detail, it's where I started falling in love with miniatures (even my parents and grandma were sometimes taken in by just how nice and detailed they looked). Fashion Pollies were ok but it's another concept altogether. Mattel miniature Pollies were and are only a shadow of the original, they are much less detailed and well-studied and have hideous 'toy' colors. I really wish the miniature 'Polly' idea would be taken further and with the old level of detail, given how much millennials and even older people drool for things like Funko Pop (I don't understand but whatever), I think a 'Polly' concept applied to pop culture fandoms would be a success.

First of all I'm from the 90's and I really appreciate this video, I enjoyed it so much! So thank you. I had a couple of Polly pockets from the Bluebird brand as a child and they definitely played a difference in my childhood, I loved my Polly pockets with my little soul! I did not realize how lucky I was to have them, in my opinion the earlier Polly pockets are the best ones and all the newer ones do not compare. The 1989 - 1993 Polly pockets truly gave you so much food to feed your imagination in endless ways! I remember putting water in the little pools and rivers, me and my cousins even put ants in our Polly pockets! Polly fashion is not Polly pockets... I just wish that they kept up the original shape and details of the Polly pockets. Even if they made different ones and shapes, like a cupcake Polly pocket, or a cookie shaped Polly pocket, or like a small library Polly pocket but keeping the details, the details and the very tiny doll.... I can't lie I do appreciate the newest Polly pocket in the bigger shell but it closes up, and has a tiny like one inch toll, I've been buying them to keep and collect.

I was so fortunate to get to play with the old Polly Pocket compacts! Those were perfect! The details, the little hidden gadgets and gimmicks in each one. I had a Star Shaped PollyWorld compact with an actual light up feature that they made a huge deal out of. "Wow! It really lights up!" Ah the 90s.

I loved Polly Pocket as a kid! I had the mermaid one as well, and the horse stables which was my favorite. I also had Fashion Polly’s boutique and the clothes you could put on her. Sometimes the shoes fell off and it got annoying 😂 This was a great retrospective and it was so nostalgic!

I still have most of my Polly sets including the mansion and the magnetic village, I even still have my magnetic Polly too. I am surprised by how many of my vintage sets I didn’t see you cover that I still have. I also had a large mat that Polly sold with a road and a pond and you could place all your houses and shops on the mat to make a little town. My brother and I would spend forever setting it up and then we would use a small piece of grey Lego who would be the ‘werewolf’ and all the Polly’s would need to run inside their homes; primarily the attic in the mansion to escape the werewolf. Not everyone survived. The mansion also had a garage with a car that closed. Many Polly’s were saved in the Knick of time because of that closing garage!!!!

polly pockets were my whole personality as a kid. i was born in the late 90s but my dad was a big ebay guy in the early days so he would order me the old school bluebird polly pockets. i loved those! my sister and i used to fight over who got which set all the time lol. but the main thing i loved were the fashion pollys. the early 2000s were such a great era for toys :’)

I was born in 1985 and the original less than an inch, only bends at the waste polly pockets were my JAM. I had a storybook one too! My best friend and I would get all our little houses, cafes, schools, etc. together and set up a whole polly pocket town and play! It was a BLAST. My sisters who were born in 1992 and 1997 played with the new ones and I always felt so bad for them because they weren't as cool as the OGs. 😂

I wish they would make the Polly pockets like they did back in the day. The blue bird company really put love and time into their work, they cared about what they were putting out on the market.
I personally think the new company who makes them now only wants to make money, they don't care about the quality. They don't have the love that blue bird had and probably never will.

I played so much that the tiny little dolls ink that made their face faded, so they had no face after a few years. However, this was all 1994 and after. These were definitely bought after 1994, but maybe because I am in a tiny European country where everything came later that's the reason :) loved the video, so many memories!

  • @okayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

I had *such* a huge collection of Polly Pockets from the early 00’s - I had a couple Barbie’s and one Bratz doll, but Polly Pocket was the one that beat out every other line. I always wanted one of her friends too, but somehow never managed to get one so I just gave up and gave all my Pollys different names and personalities based on their hairstyles. At some point I managed to get one of the classic compacts at a garage sale, and even though it didn’t come with a doll I would spend so much time looking at the compact and all the little details inside. Oh, one of the very last sets I got was this Blockbuster themed doll, that came with what I remember as VHS tape cases? (Maybe they were DVD cases cause those were more common at the time, but I thought they looked a little too chunky for that). It kills me that I don’t have my Pollys anymore, I think I must’ve given them away to one of the younger kids I used to know. I love her so much and I really wish I was more into the modern dolls - I think she’s cute and I love the canonization of the size thing but I just don’t see any particular set that I really want for myself? Maybe if the tiny sets just had a little more attention to detail and colors I like…? Idk. I wish her the best.
The live action movie is gonna give me Honey I Shrunk the Kids vibes and IDK how I feel about that.

man this was a nostalgia blast and a half. I recognise all the ones I had, but also can name which of my childhood friends had what as well. Was born in '91 but inherited a lot of my sisters' collection as she aged out of them, so my parents deemed i had "enough" by the Mattel/bluebird take over - but i remember the online flash games from the bigger dolls

2 things regarding the modern Polly- the sticky feet are the same material that the clothes for the three inch doll are made out of. That material sticks to a certain type of slick paper which is what the little stickers in the play sets are made out of so the doll sticks to them. If they ever stop sticking you can just rinse them with water and air dry and they work. Secondly, they did get rid of the sticky feet! They are now jointed and now there are clothes in that material that are for the micro doll!
