I have a hearing loss so it is almost unbelievable to understand how anyone could create anything that beautiful without being able to hear it. And so sad that he wasn't able to hear the audience applauding.

He had the understanding of music theory and harmonization pre-hearing loss. So it isn’t inconceivable that he could create beautiful works. Musicians hear things in their mind first before hearing it on an instrument.

I always thought it might be due to his father boxing his ears too much and too hard. This is such a huge discovery in the world of music. Thank you for reporting on this!! 💞 He was, to me, the most amazing and best composer of all time. And he was completely deaf for much of his life. A-MAZ-ING.
    I ❤ Beethoven

03:14. The Ninth's premiere was not conducted by Beethoven. He was unable to do it.
"Although the performance was officially directed by Michael Umlauf, the theatre's Kapellmeister, Beethoven shared the stage with him. However, two years earlier, Umlauf had watched as the composer's attempt to conduct a dress rehearsal for a revision of his opera Fidelio ended in disaster. So this time, he instructed the singers and musicians to ignore the almost completely deaf Beethoven. At the beginning of every part, Beethoven, who sat by the stage, gave the tempos. He was turning the pages of his score and beating time for an orchestra he could not hear." (Wikipedia, supported by multiple contemporary and academic sources.)
Also, the alto singer Caroline Unger is credited as the one who made Beethoven to turn around to watch the ovations.

There is a really great and moving movie named "Copying Beethoven " in which he is struggling whilst composing the "Ninth Symphony ". He is joined by a young aspiring composer named Anna to help him finish this masterpiece which is performed towards the end of the movie. Anna is the one who grabbed his arm to turn around and see a rapturous audience applause. For anyone interested, this is a very moving and beautiful movie.

Not just wrong but outright lies.
The story of Beethoven conducting while being completely deaf and needing to be "tugged" to turn around is completely false. That's the fictional scene that was in the movie "Immortal Beloved." It NEVER happened in real life. By the time his 9th was written it was a well known fact by everyone that he was stone deaf. He had been using conversation books for years at that point.
And NO ONE other than 2-3 close friends EVER got a lock of Beethoven's hair while he was alive. But at his funeral his coffin was mobbed by fans that literally shaved his corpse's head bald STEALING any of hair that they could get their hands on.
One detail MSNBC sort of got right was the use of lead. Lead was used widely for drinking goblets, plates that people ate off of, utensils for eating, containers for food and drink. Lead was cheap and VERY easy to get and work to make items people used every day. It something made of lead broke it was easy to fix. And most people did not wash all that often. And those that did wash their hands before eating simply poured cold water over their hands then used either their clothes or whatever cloth was available to dry them. IF they bothered to dry them at all.
Read your Solomon if you really care to know about Beethoven.
