- The 59$ Hyper Tough 20V Impact driver from Walmart steps into the ring to square up against tool heavyweight Makita. Does the Hyper Tough offer value? Is it perhaps even better than a drill 5X the price? Only one way to find out: watch the video!!!
This is my every day impact drill it’s awesome!(affiliate link)

Thanks for watching!
why did you use a 2 amp battery for hyper tough but you used a 4 amp for the makita seems unfair also seems bias for makita
Honestly I’ve been impressed with Hyper tough. They’re inexpensive but for someone on a budget I think they’re great.
Totally agree
I one hundred percent agree. Every hyper tough tool I have used so far has outperformed its low price tag.
I love my hyper tough weed eater. I just ordered a hyper tough reciprocating saw as well. I am amazed by how cheap they are. I only use my tools maybe once or twice a month so I don't need some heavy duty expensive tool.
I am a technician at a European car dealer. I use the hypertough to take off the covers to change oil and it works great. Have used it for yrs now and love it. Totally worth the money.
Absolutely especially just have to hang pictures or fix the odd thing that breaks but it has no business on a jobsight
I was using the Hyper Tough electric impact at my work for along time until I bought my Milwaukee and let me just say it is a very good impact and served me well at work .I bought it with the drill bundle and an extra battery for well under $100 at Walmart and I use it at home now and is still working great .For a few more dollars you can add the 2 year extended warranty plan 👍
It’s not a bad tool at all for the price!
Value
The value is great
The build quality may be bad but the functionality is amazing
For the low price of 39.88 it is amazing *value
I needed this video frfr
The tools are for very different people. If you want an impact to just do small projects around the house or even a minor construction project. The hyper tough would probably be fine. The makita is definitely geared towards professional daily use.
I was surprised by how decent the hyper tough was. I definitely wouldn’t want to use it every day but like you say for minor projects it would be adequate.
I use the hyper tough for daily professional use (primarily driving 13mm lag bolts into 4x4 and steel c beams so pretty damned heavy work) and it’s a god damned beast. It’s my first impact driver so I’m probably severely biased in how impressed I am.
I own the hyper tough. Question is were you using the stock 1.5a battery? Put a bigger battery in like the 2.5a or the 4.0a and it works way harder
300$ vs 50$ ... not much of a fighting chance
@Arthur Wilk $349 plus tax!!!!!! in canada for the impact!!!
Well, you are paying a lot for the name and advertising that these name brands have, the Walmart tools are not spending money on advertisements.
The battery in the Makita was twice the capacity. Not a fair comparison.
@Arthur Wilk Using a battery of the same size would have been more scientific. Hyper tough goes in my trunk DeWalt stays at home.
Did you try the 59 dollar impact drill with the 4om battery they just came out with it here in Washington
Stick a 4.0ah battery on the HT and see how well it keeps up with the brushless, seeing the brushless seems to have 4.0ah or thereabouts already.
My girl bought me a hyper tough tool set and they’ve been great so far. Been over a year and they are going strong. I built a 14x20 deck using that set. Not bad for 50 bucks. Once these go out I plan to get me some legit drills but these are def worth the money if you are on a budget.
Dude your videos are awesome. Keep it up. I ended up with a corded drill because the batteries were always dead when I went to use it. I just don’t use them enough.
Curtis McHale thanks mate, I’m happy to see your channel doing great as well! Your obsidian videos are a big hit. Have to chat some more CZcams next time I see you on the trails.
I disagree on your thoughts about the Hyper Tough.
You can get a 20V reciprocating saw, impact driver, drill, and two batteries for $80 at Walmart. As you’ve shown here the Hyper Tough can do all the things tools worth about 5x it’s price can do, just a little bit slower.
As you mentioned earlier in the video the more expensive, quality, tools would be great for a tradesman who’s speed is imperative. That extra speed directly contributes to the money earned that the tradesman will use to buy said expensive tool.
For home repairs and hobbyists where time doesn’t matter, hyper tough cannot be beaten.
You gotta lemon drill or something I use all the hypertough 20v mainly the impact doing commercial maintenance I've had them over a year now with problems yet I constantly change roller bearings that have a 19mm rusted bolt securing them in I use a snap on 19mm shallow well chrome socket and a 1/2 drive adapter breaks them loose every time
I grabbed this impact driver, drill, and reciprocating saw in a bundle from Walmart for $89. I'm a new homeowner just needing some tools with no real projects planned other than building some skate ramps. I've been shocked how well the Hyper Tough gear has performed and really happy with the value. That being said, I'm well aware that it's not a quality product and if I was using it weekly, I'd want something like a Makita or similar.
It actually is pretty shocking how decent the stuff is for the price. I don’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t that!
Now put your makita up against Milwaukee
I'd never bought this Hyper Tough. But when my Milwaukee didn't have the torque to get my kids racing Go Kart lugs off, belive it or not the Hyper Tough did. I was blown away.
The Milwaukee is currently at the shop, but the store guy said there might not be anything wrong with it since it takes 15% more torque to loosen then to tighten
I've had the hyper tough impact for a few years I do special event set up alot of furniture assembly and wooden frames and I've found it gets the job done no problem and for the money it's the best really charges quick holds a charge has enough power to sink 3inch screws into lumber no problem undo bolts and set bolts and your not going nuts over it thinking some one's going to steal it cause it's a Walmart special
I just wish i could find another unused battery for my Hilti 18v impact i love the three speed setting at just a press of a button and it lights up showing what setting but being a few years old maybe like 6 or 7 finding batteries is hard or so expensive i can get a Dewalt amd battery for the price. Which is dumb cause the battery consists of 16 18650 batteries
Great video.
I noticed to are also using a bigger battery on the mosquito.
So if I want to win a race and then drop a drill 25 ft get a Makita? Can't think of any reason I'd be in a race or intentionally dropping a drill 25 ft
Very interesting video. I knew hyper tough was going to loose before I wached the video ofcorse LOL. But that being said I own the hyper tough hammer drill and sawzall and the impact. I use them every day at work. I'm a plumber so I use them a every day. There under powered yeah but they work. I also own all tools in Milwaukee but I leave em here at home. Milwaukee's tools seem to disappear on the job. Anyway thanks for sharing and God bless
Yes those Hyper Tough tools are actually quite competent!
I’ve had name brand tools like Milwaukee and they fail and the chucks break etc very often. I’d say unless you are doing constant daily heavy use better just to go with the cheap stuff.
I would have been more impressed if the batteries were on a level playing field. Battery power makes a huge difference in performance and the makita is wearing a huge block.
Great video. I got a lot of use out of my Hyper Tough impact for a few years. Not bad at all for the price.
Good to hear!
To be fair of course your drill will be better it's a top of the line drill. Hyper tough is a budget tool. Hyper tough is a great tool for the low price of them. Of course hyper tough isn't the best tool on the market. But they still are a great tool. What you did here was took a nascar car and a family car and raced them. That's totally unfair lol
Is that Canadian dollars? Theyre $39 all day every day for the impacts... I am on the ridgid platform and dint want to pony up the $ for a recip so I got the hypertough cordless for $39 a few years back and it bangs out projects around the house. It is weak vs a legit or even my corded aeg but with some diablo carbide demo and metal recip blades it does well for what i have asked.
Theyre like the hi points in the firearms world.
Agree, all in all it’s impressive stuff for the price. Ya that was CDN $
Does anyone happen to know if the charger for this hyper tough is the same as the drill master charger from harbor freight?
I do love makita just had to upgrade my driver sadly mine took too many swims but survived enough roof drops to amaze me
Once you get used to a certain company’s drills it’s tough to switch!
The Funny Carpenter definitely the weight and balance though do love the hitachi/hikoki nail guns brilliant bit of kit great not needing gas or a compressor
Who's going to toss their drill 25 feet into the air for it to drop. I didn't get that one. I have Hyper Tough tools and I'm very pleased with mine. I'm not a tradesman of professional. I use my tools on an as needed basis maybe 4-5 times a year. Hyper Tough is all I need.
That's the typical height of a 2 story house.
Chuckaluck it's not that you do it on purpose but when your on a roof or going on a ladder in a building it might happen and you don't want your money just go in the trash that's the way I see it.
@@uriel0002 : For the price, I'll just buy another one. Lil.
@@uriel0002 : Plus I'm afraid of heights. LoL.
For using at home every now and than the hyper tough is better no need and getting an expensive one if you don't use them alot
Its often better to just get the Hart brand which can often hover around the same price point. Hart is generally a rebranded Ryobi, same manufacturer.
Hyper Tough is made by a low tier manufacturer known as Test Rite, based in Taiwan. That said, they do make some decent tools from time to time.
Good review!, it's how you compare: IndyCar (Hyper tough) vs Formula 1 (Makita).
Lol I’m not sure about that first screw test. The pressure with two hand on the left and Just one hand with minimal effort kinda bias lol
I have a small handyman business and all I use is hyper tough tools and they do me just fine ...two reasons..
1..they are so much affordable
2..if they get stolen I'm not out as much and easily to replace.
I know there's better tools but I have to say I've used hyper tough for years and they preform just fine....
But I am a budget minded guy ...
I use that hyper tuff drill everday mechanic work it's had oil water all kinds of stuff spilled on it and dropped and I've been using it for like 3yrs still work s
It’s not bad kit at all
@@TheFunnyCarpenter the battery started wearing out they just now made bigger batterys and it works really good with the big battery
I bought a hyper tough for a quick job in my house thought it would give out fast and still holding great did a whole 55 foot fence with it and still had charge I was very impressed because I've always used Milwaukee ones..
It’s not a bad drill at all for around the house!
Only Makita, Makita number 👍🇯🇵 Thank you sir 👏 Hello from Vietnam 🇻🇳
Thanks for checking out the channel:)
I like my ridgid had makita many yrs ago during the 12 volt days when it died went to corded for a long time I was skeptical about Wally worlds junk
Tremendous value with Rigid, they make some nice tools.
If you need power tools on a budget IMO you can't beat the Bauer stuff when it's on sale at Harbor Freight. They blow the Hyper Tough stuff out of the water completely.
It works so fast then the small battery that comes with it
Are the battery packs the same amperage?
Doubt it... People never make honest videos
I have the hyper tough impact driver and the new milwaukee m12 fuel surge. The hyper tough was worth every penny of the 29.99 that I paid a couple years ago. Still works fine. But yeah, the milwaukee is better in every way.
Not every way. It costs far more. If one uses them only once in a while, I would prefer the Hyper Tough. TO me spending a LOT and not using it often is wasting money.
So cool, loved the video. I'd buy an Makita after watching this, especially because you said Grandma's should have one. Keep up the great video work.
Thanks Alana, you never know when you might have to pop out into the yard and throw a lag bolt into a fence post:)
@@TheFunnyCarpenter So true!
Haha good stuff. I wonder how a Rigid would hold up...
Sounds like a future video:) That old Makita takes on all comers until it finally dies!
This was a great review, but idk about that drop test. The hyper tough is a brushed tool. There was no way it was going to survive the drop
Could of just taken it apart and fixed and put back together would of worked just fine ...
do you the hyper tough cordless hammer drill ?
I do not
People don't usually realize this but these tools are somewhat of an investment. The makita will be a tool you purchase and likely pass on to your kids while the hypertough will definitely get the job done but not a long holler. Especially with hard use
I don't do heavy duty, but I do use my hypertough on a daily basis
I saw a painting video were this guy dressed up like Bob Ross the painter and gotta be honest idtenticle
Now I assume you’re always standing on a soap box if I can’t see your feet
I like your Latin voice
Hyper tough did hit the floor at a more aggressive angle not really fair
That’s like throwing a Honda at an Audi. Kinda one sided. I really like my hyper tough tools. I don’t do abusive tasks so they’re not for everyone but they are for me. Also brushless vs. brush and don’t forget the price
Dude. Apples to oranges. Anyone who intends to drive 10's of thousands of screws would buy a higher quality tool. However, the vast majority of impacts sold are to weekend warriors that rightfully factor in cost/benefit on tool purchases.
do you like black & decker?
I haven't used a lot of Black and Decker, but the ones I have tried....No!
The back in the day black and decker corded stuff from back in the 80s was very good, have a handful of them going strong that I got from my dad and uncle's. Starting in the 90s about the time cordless started being a thing they kinda went down hill slowly till about 2010, they are a bit better than hyper tough but not alot. They own/are owned by Stanley and Craftsman. General feeling is the hand tools for Craftsman are very good, the Stanley ones are decent not as comfortable but fairly strong and do have a lifetime replacement warranty. The electric tools are mediocre. For a hobbyist or handyman. I wouldn't expect to see a dedicated builder carrying the black and decker wouldn't be surprised if the plumber or electrical guy had them but most have Milwaukee, Snap-On or Mikiata whichever is more prevalent in their area so they can steal charged batteries on a job site.
I like the video, but from my point of view, it is a little unfair. Hypertouch is obviously not superior in compare to makita, but it is able to comply the same work that makita does.
The test looks unfair, he has a 4 amp battery for the Makita and a 2 amp for the Hipertough, you get much more torque with bigger batteries
That makita seems kinda slow, my brushless ryobi is way faster. Although a dewalt would probably make both look like shit.
Excelente 👍👍👍
Can't see paying $275 for a home use drill.Im not gonna throw my drill up in the air knowing that it's gonna break.Home use is hyper tough construction use is makita.Happy drilling
Brushed VS Brushless..... brushless will always win
do you like craftsman evolv craftsman craftsman proffesional
Hyper Tough Walmart tools are better in some regards. They sell a 4 pound steel mini sledgehammer that annihilates anything I want with it, but then again it’s hard to mess up a literal chunk of metal bahahaha
Until they made in Japan or Germany..they all the same..just have a diff sticker name
They all made in a Chinese factory just come out a diff door with a diff name...
Different battery doesn't count
Milwaukee won this test
I call BS! Man give the HT a chance against a beast and use the same size batteries. Looks like 4amp Mikita compared to 1.5 or 2 amp for Hyper tough.
the makita outpasses hyper tough
These review channels that test budget household-grade tools against WAY more expensive professional-grade tools are freaking stupid. They only prove they don't know the actual value and use of what they're using. OF COURSE the WAY MORE EXPENSIVE professional-grade tool is going perform better than the budget household-grade tool...NO ONE IS DOUBTING THAT. And, he CLAIMS the Makita won the competition? I don't think so. Look at the data: The Hyper Tough actually won the competition, because of its power versus it's value. The Makita LOST the competition because of the same reason. They both got the jobs done...but, Makita did it only A LITTLE BIT faster. If the Makita is over FOUR TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE than than the Hyper Tough, I would want it to perform FOUR TIMES BETTER than the Hyper Tough. But, the Hyper Tough, which is 1/4 of the price, did ALMOST as good of a job as the Makita.
This is where the ACTUAL value and ACTUAL use of the tools matter: How often do you do household chores which require a drill/impact driver? RARELY! If you're doing household chores for HOURS and HOURS everyday for months or years...YES...buy the Makita; it will save you a small amount of time over a long period of time, which will make it a lot of time saved. However, MOST PEOPLE whom do household chores every once in a while will BARELY notice any time lost by buying the WAY cheaper Hyper Tough. That's value and use explained by example. I haven't seen a single one of these review channels explain it like that. They just keep saying the EXACT SAME THING: "Hey! I just tested it...and, this $10,000 tool is better than this $50 tool. WOW!!! I never expected that! And, you know what ELSE I found out? This 20 Lb professional sledge-hammer is stronger than this budget household 1 Lb claw-hammer. Hurr-durr! I'm a review channel! Durr, ba-durr, ma-hurr, durr, durr!"
Either way, had some fun making a video. Thanks for watching🍻
Yeah let's compare a Yugo to a Rolls Royce...not
Anything's better than Makita
This video is a complete whitewash. Made to sell Makita. Who throws their tools in the air? Brushless vs. brushed. Are you sure you are not a shill for Makita? Seat the battery in the Hypertough and it'll work.
Thanks for checking out the video
@@TheFunnyCarpenter It will be the last "funny carpenter" video I check out.
Larry Guthrie we will see about that....😢
Im sorry yet battery makes difference makita has a bigger battery.
Fair point
