Mehdi Sits Down with Two Ex-Israeli Soldiers to Talk Violence in Gaza

  • "After serving in Israel’s war against Gaza in 2014 and seeing their country’s military operations up close, Benzion Sanders and Ariel Bernstein, two former special forces soldiers, turned into anti-occupation activists and have been speaking out ever since against their country’s brutal oppression of Palestinians.
They joined ‘Mehdi Unfiltered’ to discuss what they learned from their own Gaza experience and how they view the current Israeli campaign in Rafah - and the right-wing trends in Israeli society.
“Destroying a whole neighborhood and all the buildings that we've seen and been inside for no apparent clear reason, seems to me - I don't know if it's a war crime or not, according to international law - but it seems like a crime. It seems like something that I am ashamed that I took part in,” Bernstein told Mehdi.

When Israelis claim antisemitism anyone criticizes the Israeli government or Zionism, that's their conscience in conflict with reality. They need others to agree that they are the good guys. Psychopaths don't care what the world thinks.
People will go to great lengths to calm their conscience. The best way to to realize what you are doing is wrong and adjust your actions. The worst way is to bend reality to your actions, suppress your ability to empathize and just keep doing what you are doing so you don't have to change. Though Ariel appears to be further down the path of healing, both seem to still be at a level of denial when it comes to the heinous crimes committed by their psychopathic gov't leadership and its gaslighting justifications for such brutality imposed on innocent civilians. Therapy as victims of narcissistic abuse (imposed by their gov't) could be a positive first step in their healing journey. Either way, this current catastrophe in Gaza must have opened up for them the horrors of 2014 all over again.

The fact is that the illegal stolen land from the Palestinians didn’t belong to (eastern) Europeans, who where shipped by thousands in the beginning of 1900. And isreali politicians had always the goal to expend the stolen land. So a peaceful society can never be achieved by those who sheet, steal, lay and kills.
A peaceful society (like before for hundreds of years, until the Belford declaration) can only be achieved by those who follow the way of the prophets (Muslims)! For us we have absolutely NO problems with living and sharing with others (Muslim or none Muslim), but we don’t like those who oppress and spread corruption on earth.

As a Muslim myself, I know what Muslims are; they are human beings. Some are what you describe: tolerant, accepting of others, and willing to share with people of different beliefs. Unfortunately, there are also those who are violent and intolerant, and who view religion only as a tool to dominate others and use it to beat them into submission. The way I look at the world, this applies to people of all faiths; those who lust for war and dominance rise to power through their relentless obsession with imposing their will on others, and those who crave peace rarely stand in their way. That's why both Israel and Saudi Arabia are ruled by mad men who bomb and starve thousands of children without a second's hesitation or remorse.

@skyelark5511 The land is sacred to all the Abrahamic religions so its only fair for it to be a democratic one-state with them all living together. So I agree with your view. However, these two groups have this embedded hatred that has grown within themselves, so, to me, even though my dream is for a one state solution, this just seems extremely difficult to achieve. Children on both sides are taught to hate the other. I've seen videos of this from both sides, it's disturbing. As a Muslim, I feel that this notion that ppl think we "hate J3ws" is absurd. What's sad is Isra3l has tied their policy toward pals as a J3wish policy which I find absolutely wrong. Also, the idea of a country to be ONLY a specific religion is not possible because everyone has their own thoughts and beliefs anywhere you go. Here's to hoping some ppl (moderate pals and isra3lis) can come together for a resolution. ✌️

@@krazed1102 I agree with you all the way. One state would be nice, but it's unrealistic given what has taken place there in the last 100 years.
I think the further away we get from the time those religions appeared, the less sense it makes to judge people based on them. Some Muslims do hate all jews and will say the worst things about them while others don't, and the same applies for jews and how they view Muslims. Good and evil exist in all groups.
Yes, it would be nice for moderates to prevail, but moderates by their nature are tepid and non-confrontational as opposed to the loud, persistent, and relentless extremists

David Theo Goldberg perfectly sums up the necropolitical logic that underpins Israel's Zionist settler colonial project. For the Israeli Zionist regime, the security and life of Israelis are dependent on the death, destruction, and control of Palestinians, but, as Goldberg points out, this logic has and continues to motivate counter-killing that produces insecurity for those the Zionist regime claims to protect. Histories of colonial and settler colonialism have taught us long ago that colonial domination and repression produce resistance to the dehumanization, humiliation, and social suffering to which the colonizer subjects the colonized. Hence, I WILL NEVER CONDEMN HAMAS OR ANY OTHER ANTI-COLONIAL RESISTANCE MOVEMENT. The fact that one of these former members of the Israeli Occupation Forces still regards Hamas as a 'terrorist' organization tells me that he fails to see Israel for what it is: a settler colonial society.

Sorry but I need more than lukewarm words. Both of these x IOF soldiers “still” live in Israel, both have security of a job -they still enjoy their entitled Israeli “right” to freedom of expression while the Palestinian people are denied and have only filming their own deaths as their only expression of truth. Yes, indoctrination plays a role but is an insufficient rationale - genocide is a systematic process, an end goal never to be superficially justified or exploited. Where is the acknowledgment of root causes, underlying ideology that must be extinguished? To me, an indication that these men and remaining Zionists are believable is for them to acknowledge Palestine was never theirs and to leave peacefully on bended knee. Given the depths of atrocities and weight of moral guilt, this would be very small price to pay.

I agree. I showed how tone deaf he was to mention visiting his family in America (NY) recently. He doesn't even see how that is a problem! If there is a limited piece of land, and one people who HAVE HOMES and lives in another country keep coming to the piece of land to live while the other, who have NO PLACE TO GO bc they don't even have passports or an airport also no one wants to take them, are also living there- what do you think will happen? He struggled to admit that 30,000 civilians have been killed, when its likely MUCH more under the rubble. I COMPLETELY understand bc if I was in his shoes, I would also take whatever advantage was afforded to me. Its just hard to know that the BEST voices in Israel about this issue are so in denial themselves (and again, I'm sure I would be too).
