    Remember that Nathan Oakley is unable to predict the motions of celestial objects, because he hasn't got a working model. Without a model, Oakley would be unable to explain why the moon doesn't change in shape, or apparent size, between rising & setting. Without a model, Oakley would be unable to explain why constellations maintain shape, and apparent size, between rising & setting. Because he hasn't got a model, Oakley doesn't even know where the sun goes at night.

    • @chrisantoniou4366
      @chrisantoniou4366 Před 2 lety

      Nathan Oakley can't produce a model of the flat Earth (obviously) so he has to pretend that models have no place in reality ("the model isn't the thing"). This way he thinks he has sidestepped the problem. Too bad normal thinking people understand that a model that can accurately predict events, eclipses in this case, but so many other things like occultations, seasons, etc., it is most likely an accurate representation of reality. No model is perfect in detail of course, but the principles behind it are.
      Nathan Oakley likes to pretend that he doesn't know the shape of the Earth but in arguing against the use of sextants on a curved Earth but affirming that sextants can only be used to navigate on a flat surface, that is exactly what he is doing. Leaving all of Oakley's sextant shennanigans and irrelevancies aside and despite his assertions, he can't even show how a sextant on a flat Earth can be used to navigate.

    • @clemstevenson

      These Flat Earthers fail to comprehend the need for evidence, in order to substantiate their claims of a conspiracy. The fact that Flerfs aren't even sufficiently intellectually disciplined to understand the need for evidence, in order to substantiate their claims, infers that they are either poorly educated, or just plain stupid.

    The thing that disc defenders don't like to bring up, or most likely don't understand, is atmospheric refraction is not dependent upon the shape of the Earth, it is a product of there being a density gradient. If the Earth was flat they would also have to account for it in celestial navigation in order to calculate the true position of the star. They would still have a "curvy line" to the object!

    Right at the begging of oakley's vid, when he's talking about angles, you can see clearly that the change of angle is not proportional to the the base of the triangle. I mean you can see it with the naked eye let alone how obvious it should be to anyone who's taken high school trig. This matters because the distance to a stars gp is proportional to the angle that the star is above the horizion. That change in angle is caused by the curve of the earth, not the increasing base of the triangle the way oakley demonstrates. the base of the triangle is negligible since the stars are so far away.

      corresponding angles are congruent.
      The navigator's line of sight to the star and the star's zenith line are parallel and intersected by the navigator's zenith line at the Earth's center and the navigator's GP.

    Using Oakley's own "logic", you can't have a straight, horizontal line of sight on a Flat Earth since the sea is never horizontal due to tides.
    I do wish Flerfs would think things through but then again if they did, we'd have nobody to ridicule.
    Btw line of sight, as demonstrated by Miles Davis at Treprain Law, is an absolute FE killer.

    I just have one question Mr Sensible, if Kylie is in your line of site surely that's were she would stay until she decided otherwise!
    True story~ back in the mid nineties I was working on a Prince gig at Earls Court. This gorgeous young lady walked passed with the tightest pair of leather trousers on and the zip went all the way around to the back of them! She stayed in my line of sight for as long as it took her to cross the back stage area heading off in the direction of the dressing rooms. There were lots of young ladies there but this one stood out. As she disappeared from my sight and sadly from my life, one of my mates laughed and told me that was indeed the one and only Kylie Minogue! No one can ever erase that image, I have been a huge Kyle fan ever since.

The dip correction brings your eye level down to sea level where you have a horizontal baseline from the observer to the geographical position of the star. Welcome to flat earth Mr. S.

  • @MartinJames389
    @MartinJames389 Před 2 lety

    Everything you explain about line of sight and refraction is described and illustrated in detail in Ibn al-Haytham's seminal 7-volume work Kitab al-Manazir ("Book of Optics") written between .. umm ... 1011 and 1021, mostly in volume 3. Nearly all of it still stands as sound science. His work was translated into Latin and became so well known in Europe that even the arch-cynic, Geoffrey Chaucer, gives him a favourable mention in 'Canterbury Tales' and, six centuries after his lifetime, Johannes Kepler wrote effusively in his praise and was a sort of al-Haytham fan club.
    So, an answer to Mike Jones' "draw a diagram" dribble could have been simply that Ibn al-Haytham already did, over 1,000 years ago.
    Sod anything al-Khalifa, however. Bad choice there, Mr S. Al-Haythem had lots of problems with the Khalif (the Fatimid one, of Cairo) and he wrote Kitab al-Manzir in secret whilst under house arrest, having had all his possessions confiscated. It was only after the Khalifal despot (Abu Ali Mansur) died in 1021 that he was released, Kitab al-Manazir could be circulated in codex form and he was given his stuff back.
