- Stuck in the soft sand again… does my Toyota Landcruiser 200 series Crawl Control system work to get me out?
Heading off from an absolutely stunning beach camp on the southern coastline of Western Australia, I found myself bogged to the axles. I had already lowered the tyres pressures on the vehicle to ~17PSI on the front and ~18/19 on the rear, however this wasn’t enough.
This was the perfect chance to see whether the Toyota’s Crawl Control function is a gimmick, or the real deal?
I hope you enjoy today’s video and check out my other crawl control tutorial on how to activate and use all of Toyota’s systems in detail: • Landcruiser 200 | EVER...

Nice maybe crawl control can get me out of a toxic relationship.
Hmm, not sure if it's designed for this...
That's what guns are for!
@@terrystratford1235 yep I agree 👍
@Kanpol Mahtlactliomei LOL 😆

Crawl has saved my bacon a couple of times. The most impressive was while towing a boat on Fraser. I was heading downhill and negotiating a big step down. I ended up off the side of the track in super soft sand so as not to damage the outboard on the drop off, sitting on the chassis rails both sides. Couldn't reverse uphill and couldn't go forward. My mate was ready to get digging, 15 seconds of crawl control and we were away. So impressive.
It’s an awesome system which works very well! Definitely something I recommend for efficient and safe recovery’s!
Thanks for sharing your experience 👍
Cheers, Nathan.
That is so impressive. Well done Toyota.
Sure is... a little bit of engineering magic was used here!
You do a great job with the videos mate. There articulated very well and the detailed information is appreciated.
Thanks mate! That's awesome to hear and I'm glad you are enjoying the videos.
Much appreciated, Nathan.
Mate i have a 200 gxl and i love how you go in to depth with the 200's and show others how to use them to their full potential!! Your doin a great job and you have a world full of knowledge i love watching your vids, it always makes me question my mods to see if their a right for what i want....keep up the great work!!
Side note its good to see why the BFG's are such a beast of a tyre for Oz
Cheers man, feedback like this is always encouraging! I'll be sure to try and keep providing this type of content.
For sure, these tyre's are awesome. Will be sticking with them for the next set with the way these are going.
98% of 200 owners won’t even know they have this feature.
I reckon that would be accurate. So many of these vehicles are bought to cruise the streets. Unbeknown how capable they are off-road.
i do!!! i have used mine a few times. the first time was on a west coast trip and got stuck near yardie creek station on the beach, near exmouth. it rose up out of the sand like... well.... you get the idea. Im in the 2%.

The LC 200 never ceases to amaze me! Thanks for sharing your video!
It sure is an impressive vehicle!
Yep, I'm definitely impressed with that Nathan. More videos like that would be great. So many buttons on my new 200 VX and with no real instructions from the sales people makes it a little hard to understand how those buttons work and how / when to use them. Thanks so much again. Great vid.
Thanks Jim! These type of videos to appear to be popular, I’ll try and keep them coming 👍
There sure a lot of electronics on these new cruisers that require certain procedures or orders to activate. Hopefully my videos, past and future will assist 👍
Cheers, Nathan.
I don’t think the sales people every know how to use them other than over green leafy suburb car park bumps 🤣
@@FangDocFilms I reckon you are right there in most circumstances!
@@FangDocFilms Absolutely. On purchase I received absolutely no instructions from the sales person. Left the yard to go and fill the almost empty tank and had to get the hand book out to find the release for the filler cap cover. Same mob told me when I had issues with the centre diff light coming on randomly that the fault was unidentifiable and that a solution would be to disconnect the light !!! That meant also that cruise control was eliminated and was low range !! Go figure.
That’s a fantastic demonstration of that function, it is something I greatly under use., cheers and Merry Christmas
Sure is mate, Toyota have done a great job here. Keep it in mind for that new tricky track.
Have a great Christmas and New Years.

Impressive. Thanks for going into depth of this system
Let’s go, Toyota! 💪🏼 Glad I have exactly the same A-Trac, Crawl Control, Terrain Mgt. System, and Rear Diff lock in my 2018 4Runner Off-Road Premium... ❤️ it!

Pure gold Nath! Thank you.

Wish my 76 had crawl control ;) On a serious note, I'm actually impressed by the Toyo crawl control. Never thought it was worth it. Thanks for the content! cheers
For sure, it’s a bit of a pity they don’t come with it, but then again, they are designed to be simple and reliable 👍
Works really well, definitely a great bit of technology.
Use both D.locks and pull the high idle knob out.
Awesome - never thought about that.. Great stuff!
Cheers mate. Definitely some great engineering here!
I am from uk, we went up to Fraser Island from Noosa. Great drive up the beach 90 clicks? I think. When we got to other end to go across ferry, we could not get off beach. After 5 min good old Aussie arrives, have you let your tyres down mate? No we'll try that worked a bit, Aussie gent pulls a tow sling out the back of his estate car, attaches it to mine tows me for 500 yards till things and get a little better, tells me how to drive proper Aussie beach style and we do it. Also good news about under car body wash. Had a great time in Australia good luck to ya all. Thanks again mate.
Thanks for sharing mate! I'm looking forward to getting over to the east coast sometime.
Some of the sand on the beaches in Aus are super soft, tyre pressure are vital in being able to safely along them.
Hopefully you'll be able to re-visit sometime when all of this is over.
Cheers mate, I appreciate the feedback.
Thanks, Nathan.
I’m impressed, no getting stuck in a Toyota ever again

Top vid mate. Cool experiment. I will surely benefit from this when I'm on the sand next
Awesome, glad to hear you enjoyed it! All the best with your adventures.
Great demo, never seen this before, thx!!
Cheers mate 👍 glad you enjoyed it
Can't wait to get mine...not that I wish to get bogged but see this work. Save using the maxi's. One thing I would be worried though if I already had low tyre pressure (some of beaches western south coast) we've gone down to 12psi (Yeagerup 10psi) would be worried about rolling the tyre off moving the wheel side to side!
This feature is absolutely awesome! A little bit of engineering magic I reckon. For sure, it would all come down to circumstance and adjusting your driving to suit as such. I have been involved in slightly panicked recoveries where pressures have been lowered to 5PSI, but this really is for emergency cases only. It can work, but potential damage to the tyres is significantly increased.
Man, thanks for reminding me I even have that system.
WA sand is easy! I did the whole WA coast in an old underpowered automatic van on light truck tyres. No diff locks, no winch, no sand tracks, just 4 strips of old carpet taken from a dumpster. We were not the fastest because of our $5 Kmart pump took a while to get them wheels up for higher speed driving. WA scerery is great, take them flies away and I move there.
East Coast sand is much more demanding, experience is much needed. Do this on Fraser after 4 weeks of no rain on 3pm. I had a Cruiser pulling my Subaru out when all the other brands would not even think of having a go.
Bravo ! Bro very impressed I do love it I do got a 200 series but now I will upgrade to 200 series Sahara that’s the way to go !
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it. These vehicles are awesome and the Sahara is so comfortable!
Cheers for watching.
Love my Crawl. It's awesome up rocky terrain as well where just being able to concentrate on wheel position rather than anything else makes a huge difference.
For sure, I agree 100%. Some people, especially those who drive vehicles without this system will be quick to bag it out, however I'd rather be sitting at camp enjoying a fire, than digging my car out of mud/sand etc.
That's great to hear Mathew. It awesome tech like this that allows beginners/amateurs like yourself that can't concentrate on using both an accelerator and steering wheel at the same time, to go 4WDing.
@@tangosucka8526 Funnily enough I've been 4wd for over 35 years, and the crawl control is still better than any other vehicle I've owned with or without lockers. Just so damn easy.

Call Matt. Oh wait he's in Utah. Pretty impressive thing. I wonder what that drumming sound was.
Haha true. That sound is the ABS system activating for the crawl control. It's definitely audible, but completely normal.
Yes, it is quite off putting the first time you hear it. As stated the ABS system fires on and off randomly to stop which ever wheel from spinning, in turn transferring drive to the opposite side. I dont think i could be so smooth on a clutch in a manual trans but.

This made me smile when she got out I'd thought she was going nowhere Toyota is king
Awesome bit of engineering magic here!
Hey mate,
I really got alot out of this video, so much so that on a recent trip to yeagarup beach in the southwest i purposely got my 2016 GXL bogged 4x to test out the crawl control featurre. Admittantly it was actually quite difficult to bog the car without reinflating the tyres but on one of the occasion i hat bogged sufficiently enough so that all electronic aids besides activating crawl control would not pull her out. But just as seen here in your video crawl control worked great everytime recovering the big heavy rig under its own steam. I am so impressed even joking to the boys about throwing the maxtrax in the bin aha. I have even noticed using it through the hilly poweline tracks down south it works good for steep downhill descent when carefull control is required straddling deep rutts/washouts and with a bit of finess with your foot on and off of the accelerator i can power on going up hills which will disengauge the crawl control then when going back down hill just slightly power off and shel re engauge with the tell tale ABS noises and jerks.
You have some of the best content on youtube for 200 series landcruiser owners mate keep it coming !
Awesome to hear mate! I love this feature, it gives you a little more confidence and another option when you do get bogged. I hear you about getting the cruiser bogged, I have rarely been bogged in this vehicle, the power always helps a little as well..
The system is awesome for all sorts of situations and tracks, I'll have to do some more demonstrations in varying terrain in the future.
Thanks for the feedback mate, appreciate the comments.

I havent been offroading or overlanding before but ive watched so many of these vids that when i see ppl on the beach/sand stuck, the first thing that pops in my head is "whats their tire pressure at?". Lol
For sure, tyre pressure plays the biggest role in these situations. I did lower my pressure down a little bit, but could of gone down a lot more, however I needed to get stuck for this video....
Imagine how unstoppable these vehicles would be with low tyre pressures and this traction control system.

Sure is mate, used more often than I care to admit 😆
First of all, in deep sand never use crawl control in high speed, secondly, never turn the steering wheel to the very end. Other than that all is ok 😃
Thanks for your thoughts on this mate. I've actually done some other testing in regards to driving styles and speeds of this crawl control and had some interesting results: czcams.com/video/IWteCiBFrh4/video.html
Great video again! I’d be keen to see how crawl control would go if you were towing a 2.5t camper trailer too...?
Cheers mate. For sure, I'll have to do another video when the new trailer arrives.
I think the results would heavily depend on the environment. If it was too boggy or soft than I believe the vehicle would struggle and likely overheat the transmission.

Great piece of engineering design here! Definitely worth given a go next time your stuck!
Ha! I'm about to take delivery of a new y62. Wonder if it can do something similar.
@@rkmckenna I'm not sure the Y62 has a dedicated 'crawl control' system as such. But from what I know, there is a good chance you would be able to manipulate the vehicles traction control settings, through the off-road 'modes' along with the rear diff lock. I reckon a combination of these electronic features would give it a red-hot go at it. Saying this, I would say it would come down to vehicle familiarisation and practice to get it to work. Jealous though mate, I love those vehicles, you wouldn't believe how close I got to purchasing one for myself before the LC200.

@@franadrian It's only natural haha. In all seriousness, the Patrols are still a very capable car. I used to have an '08 GU, however in my opinion the 200 series is advantageous most aspects.
Might want to think about plugging those chassis rail holes in your wheel wells with rubber grommets as it looked like quite a bit of salty sand got inside the rails. I used a rubber floor mat & cut my own for the bigger holes & used black silicone on top of rubber grommets as they seem to deteriorate really quickly & the inside bits break away. P.S I cut a little groove with a hacksaw blade on the bigger ones so they seated in the rail.
Yeah, they sure filled up with plenty of sand and crud from this trip!
To date, I’ve been relying on throughly flushing and washing out the rails to make sure no corrosive material is left in there.
Thanks mate 👍
Nice demo of this function. I have tried this in loose sand and boggy mud. Trans has overheated every time, so have simply avoided using it. Temped to go out and try it again.
Cheers mate. That’s interesting to hear. What sort of conditions were you trying it in? Outside temps? Did the vehicle disable the function when it overheated?
When I did this test, my trans temps were lucky to go over 90, but it was about 21 outside.
Yeah both times it was 35 odd outside. Trans temps up in the 130s. Booked hard in a salt flat.

Great demo. It seems to me every time you turned the wheels to either lock forward propulsion stopped or slowed. Maybe try it again without moving the steering wheel?
Yes, I can see this to some extent. Recording this from outside the vehicle definitely offers perspective, however as you could probably imagine, being inside the vehicle, I couldn't feel this as much.
Maybe an idea to try again sometime in the future with some suggestions from these comments.
Cheers for watching, Nathan.
@@XploringOz By doing it this way, you showed us that Crawl Control needs a different technique - something none of us would have known if you hadn't moved the wheel side to side - something most of us would instinctively do in such situations. All kudos to you Nathan.
@@BenMitro Thanks mate 👍 got plenty of ideas for another video in the future now too. Cheers.
That is really amazing. Would very low range 4x4 with front and rear LSD s do the same???
It sure is amazing technology. I think it could very well be worth a try before digging. I believe a single rear diff locker would help a lot though. Let us know if you ever try that theory.
Cheers, Nathan.
czcams.com/video/_9mmajFmVcc/video.html This guy does a great demo. I always thought you must keep wheels straight - well maybe not.
The one reason that you were stuck is that the steering wheel is not on the proper side of the vehicle. Everybody knows that the steering wheel is on the left side. -)
But seriously that was pretty cool to watch. I don't think you needed to move your front tires. You look at when you first started to crawl you could see your car moving just so gently. I know why you were moving your front wheels That's just something we all do when we are four wheelers we know that you can turn your front and perhaps get a better bite in the sand or dirt. I think in this case you did not need that but it didn't hurt anything either.
You definitely got a new fan of your videos here in the States. I already hit the like button and subscribe button. I'm getting ready to watch the other video you refer to at the end about explaining all of this stuff and how it works.
Thank you for taking your time to show everybody how that system worked. I'm still not 100% sure how it worked but it was nice to see it work if that makes any sense.
Haha, yeah it would seem a little weird for those not used to the wheel on that side, just like it is for me the other way round...
Thanks mate, appreciate your comments here. I completely understand your comments regarding turning the wheel left and right and actually did a bit of a test with that in a recent video where my crawl control overheated (released a few weeks ago). To be honest, when you're inside the vehicle, it's hard to tell whether you are moving at all and much easier to see on camera from outside.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you will enjoy my others and future video's to come! This channel is all about trying to educate those who might be thinking about getting out and about in their own 4WD and specifically their 200 series Landcruiser.
Cheers, Nathan.
@@XploringOz watching the video I can imagine how hard it was to know if you were moving. I think if it wasn't on video and I was standing there I might not have seen the vehicle move so slightly.
I cannot wait to watch your video about the overheating. Until I saw your first video I had no idea that Toyota did that.
Here in the States where I live our particular off-roading involves more snow and ice than sand and mud. I own two different 4x4 vehicles and my oldest one is a 1990 F-150 4x4 with the 5.0 engine. That is my go-to vehicle when the weather gets very bad here. I have never met a blizzard that I could not get around in. My other one is a newer Ford expedition and that one really doesn't do well off-road or in the snow. I just love the old school four-wheel drive that my pickup truck offers.
I really look forward to watching your adventures.

Nice! I have a LC 200 as one of the few in Norway. It is the luxury version with hydraulic springs. Maybe you only have this in the Lexus version?
Potentially, we have 'KDSS' or Kinetic Dynamic suspension system which is a hydraulic assist suspension system which still relies on the fundamental spring and shock system. Is this what you would be referring to?

Yeah, can’t try it out in snow here in Western Australia. Hopefully it will work for you in sand if you get the chance 👍
Not every time? Never been a time it has not worked for my TRD OR 4R. And I run completely stock everything. Not even OR tires. @@nickkaboo Mate, I haven't been down there yet personally, but I'm always up for a challenge and new places. So this is definitely on the list, it's just a matter of organising a trip down that way.
I'll create a video for sure.
Great video. I’m surprised that this is such big news to Toyota guys. My 2014 Discovery D4 has this (and has been available as a standard feature in the range since about 2008). It really shows that a good traction control system is not to be scoffed at. Too many people, in my opinion, get overly obsessed with the idea of lockers and live axles. True, in extreme 4wd situations those are hard to beat. But if you want a comfortable touring 4wd with strong off-road chops, a great traction control system coupled with a lockable centre diff and an independent suspension is very effective.
Couldn't agree more mate. There are way too many people hung up on the idea of lockers and solid axles, however these IFS vehicles with a capable traction control can surprise many people.
I guess some are just stuck in their way, but for us, this vehicle is the perfect Overlander and the perfect compromise between comfort on-road and capability off-road.
Cheers, Nathan.
Steven, your Disco does not have crawl control. You have traction control, 2 very different functions.
Gareth, I’m open to being wrong about it. What in your opinion is the function of crawl control?
@@arielle_australia your traction control requires wheel spin to initiate, like all other brake traction aids, the wheel sensors need to detect different axle speeds across the diff to engage. Crawl control, is a set and forget function, no throttle input requires by driver, it drives for you, with a very aggressive abs response to ensure limited slip accurs to maintain constant wheel speed on all 4 corners. It's like comparing downhill descent control with the brake peddle. It cannot be replicated by the driver. 👍
ya toyota has had this shit since the 90’s
Awesome. I have a FJ cruiser. 2013 trail teams edition. It has that crawl control function as well. My question is. Should I be using the rear differential locker with the crawl functionality?. Thank you for your time. Daniel.
Hi Daniel, nice car! So you don't need to use the diff lock if you're using crawl control. The vehicle will determine how quickly or slower the wheels need to turn and will automatically regulate power around the vehicle for maximum traction. In some cases (like soft sand) diff locks can actually hinder progress.
Hope that helps.
Cheers, Nathan.
@@XploringOz thank you 😊
Absolutely use the locker, that way the abs controller only has to distribute braking force to the front axles. This way, you will have a more constant axle speed and be out of your big much sooner.
Hey Nath
Just wondering got a Prado Kakadu haven’t got to test it out though presuming this would be the same?
Yep the same 👍🏻
I would assume it would be the same system 👍 Toyota are always improving their software though and I’m sure it would be optimised for the Prado. Good luck with testing it out, great system.
It moves forward every time you stop putting steering input
Exactly what I was thinking
Maybe, but some testing with speeds and steering input can be seen here. It doesn't actually make that much of a difference... czcams.com/video/vCzVlP22iCw/video.html
You can see the car still had traction control on when you first tried to get out of the bog! The front wheels were spinning but the back was doing nothing. You can't just press the traction control off, it stays on even though it lights up. You have to hold the button in for 5 seconds to fully disable it! You can see when you engage crawl control it turns it off as all 4 wheels spin equally.
Yes that's correct? The traction control was turned off (completely) for part of this hence some wheel not turning?
Not exactly sure what you are referring to here?
You couldve gotten out of it without crowling feature...all you need L4, and turn the steerting wheel slowly right and left while moving forward slowly... But good Toyota ad 👍
I reckon it’s worth another test in the future to see different comparisons. I would have my doubts without crawl control though. Without some sort of diff lock or traction control only two wheels would be spinning. I’m willing to give it a go in a future vid though 👍
My observation is that Crawl control more or less just locked all hubs so all wheels turned. When you were in regular drive some of your wheels were not even turning even though you were in 4WD
Yeah, I guess it kind of works that way. It's essential attempting to lock the differential to provide smooth and even power to all 4 wheels at the same time in an attempt to gain maximum traction.
Having normally open diffs, 1 wheel on the axle will always spin faster than the other side, especially when in a bog like this.
Cheers, Nathan.
Better demo..... My concern, while watching at 3:40 to 3:55, the vibration on your bumper was very clear, and for me, in the long run, due to wear and tear, that could somehow break (but it is supposed to be stronger than the original). Was the vibration, that hard, really normal? Or something lacking with your improvised bumper?
Hey mate, so this is completely normal. This is because the bumper is attached to the chassis of the vehicle and the body of the vehicle is isolated or separated from the chassis by rubber body mounts.
I can assure you that the bumper is solid and mounted well to the chassis, but this just demonstrates how well the rubber body mounts work on the cruiser to take out these vibrations from the body...
So I have a question.. can you tow a car out of a bog in crawl mode. .. eg, you snatch someone out then get slightly bogged yourself, put it in crawl then continue to pull them forward through soft sand?
Potentially, there would be many factors that would this would depend on. Traction of the bogged vehicle, traction of the recovering vehicle gradient etc.
I would say it would probably struggle and something like a snatch strap would likely work better.
