Very Important question and great answer! So many producers switched already to home studios from the 80s - they wanted to be able to work quickly and serve the creative ideas 🙏 not to shine from outside! So whatever works to make your music happen is legit!

I feel that with the advent of home recording, the idea of what makes a studio has become more flexible. To some a studio could be something on the level of the JST studio. To others all it needs to be is a spare room they can soundproof, a good audio interface, a good set of headphones and monitors, midi keyboard, and a computer with their daw and some free and paid plugins.

You only need a studio if you record real drums or a live band all at once.
You can track vocals, guitars, bass and keys in any small space.
But you only need about 3k to record drums:1k $ computer, 600$ 8 channel interviews, around 1k $ worth of microphones and about 400$ for some mild room treatment then mix on headphones.

99% of this business is driven off manufactures and service providers (Mixers, Photographers, PR, Web hosting, Videographers, management, Recording studios, etc) making a living off of artists. This is all before the artist even knocks on the door of a potential fan/listener lol. The smartest artists in the game, took their first payments and built their private studio. Think of it this way; how the hell can you consider yourself an artist when you don't even have a place to develop your art... Painters don't go to some other place that has canvas, lights, paint brushes and whatever else. Music is the only industry where you can get utterly lost and drown in the sea of the technical aspect of the art without ever creating a damn thing. Best decision I ever made has be investing into my own private studio. The worst musical decision I ever made was not taking my private studio serious 10-15 years ago. Good video dude.

Do your research and buy what is needed and / or upgrade when necessary. Don't overboard with hardware. Master what you have now and make magic with it.

If you want to make music for the clubs having space and freedom to listen and feel sub bass without annoying the neighbours is so helpful and speeds up mix time... Great if you got space and freedom at home to blast sub bass but if you cant do that at home a studio would be more than ideal.

I started building my home Studio in 2020 and stopped buying gear in 2022. After I realized that anything that I spent on from now on would have diminishing returns I just settled with what I have and learned to make the most of it, I have a cheap 400$ e-kit (I enjoy tracking a real drum performance instead of programming), Steven slate drums ($100), an AKG mic ($60), some guitars and a bass (~$426), a Behringer UMC-1 ($200) and edifier speakers ($140). Since then my mixes only got better and nothing in my setup has changed, so at the end of the day all you need is decent gear and a sharp ear.

Thanks! I needed to hear that because I’m really close to opening my studio for the first time and I’ve been looking for a building to get into but I have a basement at my house and it’s not a finished basement it’s just a place to put the furnace and water heater and that’s it but it’s enough for a small live room and an even smaller control room and vocal booth but it looks like a crappy basement with some equipment. Keep in mind no one even knows I have a studio so the rent, utilities and gas back and forth would all be a waste of time and money

I feel that the great concept must be mobile studio- when you need a big room or some specific stuff you take step out and rent or borrow a place for a couple of days.
In my case, I record our full band live in the same room with some gobos. Something I think is crucial is having a space for content/recording/mixing and in our case rehearsal.

Ive been going through this way of thinking here lately. what do i really need right now that will improve my sound without costing hundreds of thousands of dollars? Right now my plan is to get 2 Neve-ish preamps. And i plan to use it in a variety of ways. i can use it to track what i need but i can also use it as if im analog summing. cost would be between $650-$2,000 just for preamps depending on if i want the real Neve preamp or a clone. Right now im looking at the Golden Age Premiere 73 which cost $430 each. and for EQ for tracking im looking at the great river harrison 32Q. im looking for at least a good 4 band parametric EQ for that. All of those will be 500 series so need a chassis so im looking at the Radial work house. So total between those 3 is going to be around $2500 for everything. Im also looking at IGS S style buss compressor along with Neve tape emulator need 2 of those. So with those total around $6k I figure with just those i can track and mix with those. thats alot cheaper than buying a full console which i hope to have eventually. Looking at the Neve Genesys Black 24 inputs.

Yes they are. That's why Glenn Fricker just bought a $100k Neve console. Hardware > plugins by a long shot. Real stuff is sonic bliss on the ears, less option paralysis. None of my favourite records used plugins. We are still chasing old tones. I learned on a Line 6 Toneport. I love my new tube amps so much more.

unfortunately where I live, if they don't see the drums, the tube amplifier or the nice machines with lights, they don't care about the result, they prefer to record with a 200 dollar drumset than using a good process midi one even though once again you show them the result of the portfolio, I can only continue saving to have the space, but I agree 100% in everything you say.

Depends what you want to do. But it would only feel like a “burden” as you described if you didn’t have enough clients to make profit. This video sounded like that.
No you don’t necessarily need a studio space…But I can easily make __times my rent each month, so rent doesn’t matter. On the other hand, I wouldn’t be making those numbers if I didn’t have my studio space. It all connects.
Hiring occasionally means there’s three sides you need to organise with. Last minute cancellations would be a nightmare. It’s just easier to run your own space. It’s not to impress or show off. Artists simply need a safe place with someone to guide them when it comes to recording.
If you just want to mix, you don’t need the above.
Hope your new journey goes well!

The upfront cost of commercial real estate made having a facility not very practical for me. I habe a relatively serious home setup but i have a mobile 24 track rig that fits in my vehicle so i can record bands in a comfortable familiar space like their jam rooms or garage.
If a band has the budget I always prefer a commercial studio for drums but instead of turning people away I just pivoted. How many people do you know that can show up, record a full band simultaneously with cue mixes for each member and you don't have to transport your gear?

Hey mate! I'm happy you're moving your life in the direction you feel would give the most genuine results.
The grind can be something, we're all kinda getting through it in our own ways, but yeah, life isn't all about the grind. At some point, you realize things about yourself and notice what works and what doesn't with how you feel with yourself. Isn't it also why we're into music as well?
Anyway speaking for myself that I have only two projects under my belt and I know that enough for now. Both projects are young and doing well. Well... Better than what I anticipated. But I'm also a public servant full time. I'm also a boyfriend that believes that this relationship will work out. So why trying to burn the candles on both ends? Especially on this day and age.

People are always gonna have a need for places to record and recording and mixing engineers.
The lower cost to entry isn't going to level the skill playing field. People will always need skilled people. So instead of hating on home recording studios, focus on your skills. You'll keep getting business if you have the skills. Gear and your own facility doesn't guarantee you anything except bills.

@@MrNEWDY I disagree. It won’t be anytime soon. However, recording studios today are barely breaking even so it might even be sooner than we think

Recording studios are def going out of business, but the need to record real instruments will always be there. Also, big studios are a flex for content. A place for everything I’m this game, just figure out where you fit in

@@joeymusic you really think people spend millions of dollars just to flex a studio on CZcams?
