I think an electrical schematic would be greatly appreciated by anyone trying to make the car, it takes any ambiguity out of it
I agree. I’ve built a kit car before and the electrics was the trickiest part.
I often forget that there are many hobbyists who prefer to do things “by the book”. I’ve always been the type to wing it and make it up as I go, so it’s an interesting perspective

You're a really crazy guy, I love your videos! I just look at the steering tube with concern. So that the tube does not penetrate your body in the event of an impact, you should consider a telescopic design or something like an compression basket, for example made from a tin can. The more info in your book will mean less calls for customer assistance. Yes a complete wire schematic is a good idea. Show where accessories items should plug to if people want to customize their unit.
I tried and failed some years ago on something like this.

I really like the pulleys on the outside. It could be a steampunk design.

As for the electronics, you should just release the initial schematics of the base car and then a separate set on how to add the electronics to it. At least then you can justify having a pause between the two sets of instructions.
With that idea in mind, it would be nice to have an add-on to extend the front of the car out specifically to solve the storage issue, functioning like a trunk, it would be a nice little plug and play addition to the car.
Anxious to see this completed (because it’s fascinating) so that we can get back to the backyard railway!
Have you considered a kick-starter campaign? That would give you an idea of how well the plans will sell, and whether there's demand for things like a wiring diagram.

Yes you should do a electrical plan.
My brother, dad, & I built a wooden go-cart from the boy scout plans in 1978. Solid front axle that pivots in the center. Steers with a cable & pulleys to the steering wheel. Solid rear axle driven by chain & 5hp Briggs & Stratton. Brakes was a 2x4 on door hinges against the back tires with cable to brake peddle. Still runs great.
200 miles, wow from an idea you had to production without any financial backing that's impressive, especially as it's still a R&D project that you want everyone to use. Nice work Tim.👍
Reckon just a basic electrical scheme would be helpful, if only for a baseline to sanity check against when adapting whatever components one can get a hold of.
Wiring schematic will def help some people but you should worry about the physical plans first, then maybe add that later if you are not already totally sick of the project.
You could use some copper pipe (15 and 22mm) and plumbing fittings (either solder or compression) to make a nice luggage rack above the rear wheel, maybe? Like a square shape with a few bars running across and a little lip at the bottom. And then held off of the body of the car using Munsen rings. Easy to make with just hand tools!

5:44 the metal to metal contact between the screw and the steel rope is concerning.
I recommend changing the screw to brass to make sure the screw is the wearing, not the steel wire.
I would recommend this for all other things in contact with the steel wire as well.

Absolutely include a wiring diagram. Never underestimate the importance of clear, complete and accurate documentation.
Still disappointed you elected to not go with my Merlin engine suggestion, but your way is good too.
Worth adding a couple of pins or a curved cover to prevent the steering wires coming off the pulleys if the wire goes a bit slack. I didn't and made a cart sized hole in a wired glass window.
Oh dear! Loose steering cables lead to speed wobble too - guess how I know that!

Dear Tim, I'm usually not of the worrying type, but that steering column looks like it could become the _Great Impaler 3000_ once one would hit a wall / tree.
How about having the steering barrel mounted directly to the steering wheel and lengthen the wires, using a few more pulleys to redirect its path from steering wheel to the axles? This surely will increase friction and decrease directness due to cable stretching, but might be safer. Aaaaand it opens up the possibility to have the steering wheel angle adjustable ;)
Well I'm not saying you're wrong, but there is a big wheel stuck on the end of the column, so it would have to be something spectacular to actually impale anyone. I will keep looking for alternatives though.. : - )
I don't think he'll be going fast enough for that to actually happen, remember, the top speed is (theoretically) 25kph.
I'm not sure about the camber discussion: I think if you're feeling fine with the handling then it's a good setup. the only place I think camber might be necessary is the forces on the wheels during cornering. I know it's been done to death with the rear wheel and that the small-diameter wheels are quite stiff, but I'm more wondering about the bearing longevity with the lateral forces, though the same question comes to mind with a cambered setup...

I have a suggestion.
I see you are using thin plywood for the sides. Corrugated plastic is lighter and can be cut with a utility knife. And it's more water resistant.

Not everyone has a lathe, BUT THEY SHOULD.
You don't need an electrical schematic per se, but some kind of diagram showing what wires connect where is always useful.

Rather than cutting into the clevis, I'd have thought about putting a bend in the connecting rod (tang). Maybe you did; I know it would change the clearances for the rod.
Longer Tang and Cleavis to remove the need for bird mouth cut.
Thicker steering cable . Thin wire will stretch. Oh and water ingress in to steering boxes will weaken structure over time. Resulting in catastrophic failure. Anyone see that one coming.
Well now..! A longer clevis would throw out the Ackerman, that's stainless steel brake cable, specifically designed not to stretch, and I would agree with you about the water in the box - if it had a waterproof seal on the bottom bearing (it doesn't). I considered adding breathing holes in the sides (easily done), but they're just not needed.

This reminds me of the first time I got stopped by the police, it was in a soap box derby powered by a Jacobson rotary lawnmower. I was in the gravel on the side of the road doing about two mph, he told me to take it apart and drag it home.
I guess he was just doing his job but it seems very harsh. (Unless you were forty years old and it happened last week?)
I was around 10 years old.
Not sure I would ever build the car, but I’d love to buy a copy to support your channel. I’d certainly buy this as a “coffee table book” if the format and binding made that practical.

Lots and lots of good ideas, and delightful finetuning. Provided I don't have to sell a kidney to afford them, I definitely want to purchase the plans. I want the full details on that steering setup. I'll not build the whole car, but many of your solutions are very clever and actually tested and refined. So far I have had success building a sturdy and lightweight frame, the rear wheel mounting is solid and practical, my seating position is comfortable, but my front wheel setup is nog going so well. At all. 😢

I'm in the U.S. I've always pronounced it with a short e (eh, like best) sound. It's interesting to hear how things a pronounced differently elsewhere
You might as well have a rack and pinion now. As far as camber goes, there's a reason old race cars had negative camber. I just don't know what it is, but I think it has something to do with the narrow tires, which this thing has.

Definiately I would include the electrical design. The plans should specify parts list for all the necessary e-bike parts so that people without much knowledge of this electric bicycle stuff can easily reproduce your magnum opus.

Yes, making a set of plans is pretty much the hardest thing to do.
I built a number of amusement devices and upgrades, and it’s not easy.
Take a part, any part, draw the plans to be simple and easy. Not so complex that you’ll need an engendering degree just to make a cut.
Also, you should make a wiring diagram and placement for the wires. If you get a chance, look up the wiring diagram on a 1959 Volkswagen. It’s very simple and straightforward.

I highly recommend to put a wiring schematic into your plans, because it takes all doubts away about what wires go where when everything is coloured and/or labeled. However, I am an electric engineer, so that was beaten into me. One of my professors wouldn't even help you if you didn't have a schematic.
We don't have a 4 inch pipe, but a 100 mm pipe is common

I'd definitely buy the plans. I'm not sure about actually building the car, since it'd be suicide around here to drive anything that fragile that can't hop a kerb and avoid a lunatic driver.
Maybe once I move northwards to somewhere with lower population and traffic density. It'd work great for short trips without a heavy load.

Your Clevis looks like the old brake rods that someone used to stake saplings at my allotment. The trees eventually grew around many of the brake rods and swallowed them up! Made it difficult when the trees had to come down.
Looks like this is basically done. How about making a boiler for your steam engine now?

I was thinking some more about the other comments that suggested putting the steering drum right behind the 'firewall' on a very short steering column and extending the steering cables.
One advantage mentioned that it would eliminate the danger of a long steering column being thrust into the driver in a frontal crash but that is not my motivation.
Would the space no longer used by the long steering column be a useful storage space?
It is tempting, but there's very little space over your toes while you're pedalling so you wouldn't gain a lot. And you'd need at least two more pulley wheels. I will keep looking at it though

I would advise against adding any wiring diagrams. it something for someone to get wrong easily and blame you or use different parts and blame you! no matter what they will blame you. make sure to add something to your instructions that covers you from liability. I don't know what the laws are where you are from but here in America these things can involve lawyers rather quickly. be careful.

I think you should add a electric schematic diagram because it would make it easier for those who want to build there own car.
I wonder if this car would be street legal here in Germany. Would really be a fun project to build. But I wouldn´t necessarily need electrical schematics, as electrician I could figure it out by myself.
I'm sure it's legal in Germany - it's an e-bike really. And you could put a bigger motor in so it would go up hills easily : - )
I would say a simple electrical schematic would be useful because what one person calls easy another can call rocket science.
for instructions, you have to assume the reader doesn't know what their doing, because while the reader may mostly know what their doing, you have no way to tell where the hole in their knowledge is.

As a suggestion for the steering, rather than a pipe, why not have a circle made like the steering wheel from layers?
Three layers, middle layer a little smaller to act as a channel for the cable to run in, outer layers a bit bigger to act as a guide for the cable and prevent it coming off.
that would work too - but it might wear quite quickly?

I'm not sure why you'd need an electrical drawing unless you were already a bit of an engineer who understood all this to begin with! :)
Remember the trick to writing plans for a project is to make them as concise as possible, if you write them to detailed it will actually have the opposite effect to what you want.
Short and concise beats long and too detailed.

Great project , and I am sure plenty of people would love to have a go at building it, basic wiring circuit colour coded would make things easier for many. Good fun project and very practical, dose it need any kind of licence e.c.t for road use in the UK.
The UK has the same rules as we have - so it's legal for anyone 14 years old and up
