actually my mam didn't have choice cuz she was afraid I would get bullied in school , and I did get bullied in school for having my hair in it's natural state , so my mam relaxed my hair since I was very young , I don't even know what my real hair look like and it's damaged alot :(

It is shoking and sad to hear a little kid saying that they 'supposed to have perms'. Very sad that they are thaught to believe that their natural beauty isn't good and they have to change it.
I dont blame the kid. U have to understand its a generational thing. After slavery, & black women got working in society, they wore wigs. ALL THE TIME. Their hair just wasnt acceptable. No one was taught how to care 4 d naturally dry afro hair. Ecspecially in the terrible weather, it was easier to wear a wig (check out all d artists in the 50's, 60's). When the relaxers came, mothers relaxed their childrens hair from around the age of 6 (my moms generation). Relaxers were the norm. And they also grew up & relaxed their kids hairs (our generation - i'm 32). The whole thing started in reaction to society until it became - what everybody does. The odd thing would be to not relax ur hair. So when i read ur comment, i & a lot of black girls like me feel confused. "Like are u implying i hate myself, my relaxed hair IS the norm". In our generation, people dont know better is the main reason why people do it - we've done it all our life. Its not bcos of self-hatred. More people are getting educated about their hair now & going natural & this is still a learning curve for black women. As i said some of us never even knew what our natural hair looked like till we were 30. The good thing is i think its stopping at my generation cos videos like this has got pple thinking. I see a lot of children wt afro hair now.

Yes, on the practical note when they were removed their native African cultural contexts, placed amidst new scenarios, they weren’t able to care for their hair as did prior,...on the African continent, yet still a midst their poverty(mental and physical) they were taught to disdain everything that made them uniquely African, and as the offspring(biracial) of white slave masters, overseers, & indentured servants were placed in their midst treated better,...such people became the REFLECTIONS in every way the more covetous esteemed. A part from this we were strategically indoctrinated with a thorough education of self hatred consciously and unconsciously enslaved or not seeing that we have long been subjects of a eurocentric society.

wow 10 years later and i’m so happy to see how we’ve grown. now i walk down the street and see beautiful afros, braids, cornrows locs etc... this video was made 2 years before I went natural, and it was hard as a kid because no one was natural at my school, but i still was confident, and i was proud to have my hair. now i’ve been loc’d for a year, and i’m really happy, keep on loving your hair y’all.
i had a friend who is mixed and has naturally biggish loose curls and combing my hair one day she watched me in disdain and said when are you gonna straighten your hair so i was like when are you gonna straighten yours. people think is a right of passage for all black women to get a perm. i am mixed with hair more on the afro side, i have never gotten it relaxed and i'm proud!
I hear you. This came out when I was in HS...and it caused me to question a lot of things. It wasn’t until college that I decided to quit the creamy crack and never look back...but this scene was the beginning!
I’ve big chopped 3x trying to go with the natural movement and hated it every time. Detangling, shrunken hair, extra time styling hair etc is not my cup of tea. Bring on the lye, no lye, I’m so much happier.

As a white european guy it sure is news to me that black people do this. I also saw that Vice documentary about caribbean fashion week when they were in Jamaica and talked to people about skin bleeching. That was scary to watch. On one hand I think that it has to do with residue from slavery about beauty standards. But I also think it has to do with greed. I live in Sweden and when the sun shows up here in June and July people run outside to desperately get a tan. The newspapers often print articles with warnings about not tanning too much and to think about the risk of skin cancer. Tanning beds and fake tan sprays and all of that crap. I guess whatever insecurity some market researchers find to exploit they will exploit.
Yep. That is how the beauty industry makes its millions-- by telling everyone, all the time that we are not ok the way God made us. If you are white, you need to have darker skin, fuller lips, a different hair color, "volumizing" shampoos for more hair fullness, etc. If you are black, you need to have lighter skin, straighter hair, slimmer noses, etc. They have us all chasing something unnatural and if they had their way, we'd all look like Kardashians-- artificial, racially ambiguous, and oddly resembling felines after a certain point.

I actually had the opposite experience as a white girl/woman. Most of the boys and young men went for the darker girls/women, with dark skin, dark hair and dark eyes. Said they were exotic, beautiful and sexy. I used to wish I had black hair and darker skin, and I paid to have curls in my hair. Also, because my hair was very blonde (it's now more white :), I used to get accused of dyeing my hair, which I never did. And I heard a lot of dumb blonde jokes and jeering. (all the shows with 'dumb blondes' didn't help) One young man even tried to convince me that there is actual research that proves that blondes are dumb. On top of that, just for being white, I've had all kinds of assumptions made about me that weren't/aren't true. I had a lot of self-loathing to heal, from different harsh experiences. I'm still working on it. I'm not bitter, I'm just trying to educate. There is prejudice and unkindness expressed in every race, but thankfully most everyone expresses kindness and good will. The Truth is that every single person on this planet is Beautiful, Soulful, and Worthy of Love and Respect. I will endeavor to have no preconceived notions so that I can see us all as we Truly are, and to have Beautiful experiences with all the Beautiful people that I meet. Metta. Namaste.

After I saw this movie, I started seriously considering going natural. (I had thought about it before but never thought I could do it) about a month ago I cut of my relaxed ends and I love my hair!! I have never had so many compliments about my hair or had some much fun with it. So for now its natural for me!
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is an ionic compound, which is made from a metal and a nonmetal. You're basically torching your hair!!!! I'm a chemistry major, so you become familiar with these types of chemicals in the lab and they are not good for your hair at all!
Most chemicals for hair aren’t good for it. Guess you should keep your natural texture, color, and just it care. Skip the makeup and nail polish too. Gotta pick your poison with beauty

I place hair relaxers in the same category as skin bleaching, double eye-lid surgery, and anorexia; it's basically taking dangerous and even deadly initiatives to achieve a certain look. Why can't we all just be happy with how God made us? I'm also really annoyed by the "can't comb natural hair" excuse. Comb your hair IMMEDIATELY after you take a shower when it's still damp, moisturizers help. I, with super "nappy" hair (that I love!), usually don't have to put in moisturizer at all. Do u! :)
I did my bigchop 2weeks ago and guess what? I found a bald spot (well not completely bold, barely there). Relaxer did that, I took care of my hair despite it being relaxed so there is no other way I could have got that. Never realised relaxer could damage your scalp. GLAD I'm going natural.

Leah Olamioti If you had offered me (3b/3c European dark blonde) this method without any other knowledge of chemicals when I was 10... I would've taken it. But I'm Dutch and not black so I had no idea this existed until now. Because smooth curly hair is accepted, but giant piles of frizz like what I had? No. In my heart I find curls incredibly beautiful but straight was the norm and I didn't want to be bullied anymore. I can only GUESS at what this is like for black people. I had no idea it was like this. I always thought "Afros look good on black people, but I don't want one, I'm super white!" :)
I completely agree. My sister who is 35 has a completely different mindset about natural hair now and is raising my niece to love her natural hair. I don't even think she herself knows what her natural hair looks like.
Dont forget the "whites" that wear hair extentions to make their hair thicker and coloring it, getting tan to look more exotic etc.. But i quess the victimhood is just down the "black" street.

Wow it is so funny how times has changed even since then which was not that long ago because now a lot of people are also embracing their own natural hair weather it is courser hair or not all hair is beautiful in a way it is just how you manage to take care of it. Now they are variety of styles and that is just beautiful :-).
I know what you mean....I didn't know it can harm your lungs. That's scary. I asked my mother when I got a relaxer for the first time and she said a little after I turned one. “I just don’t know how to take care of it...” that excuse is unacceptable. I went natural in 7th grade (big chopped) and at first I didn’t even know the curl pattern of my hair !!! But I wanted natural hair so bad that I took the time to learn the history behind it, and how to care for it. I was 13 at the time, and now I’m 15 (in the 9th grade.) I take care of my sisters hair so momma won’t relax it like she did mine, cause I want them to keep their culture. Moral of the story that ExCuSe is getting rly old. There are hairstylists, CZcams, and other resources that can teach you. You’ve just got to be willing to learn.
I remember perms, but what i remember the most is how thin my hair used to feel after my mom did it. I felt like I could see my scalp through my hair. It's not for everyone, my hair is definitely healthier now that it's natural.

This is really sad. Strangely enough, as a white woman, I used to put chemicals in my hair to make it curly. I didn't think it looked pretty unless it was curly. I don't do that anymore. I still admire curls though. They are so pretty to me. But it is strange that we sometimes want the opposite of what we are. Some white people want to be darker; some black people want to be lighter. Some white people want curls; some black people want straight hair. Just goes to show you that we're all beautiful, we just don't always know it. My hope is that we all know, see, and appreciate our own unique beauty. Because everyone is Beautiful just the way we are! And that's the Truth!!
Kelly D You are simplifying something that comes from a culture of oppression and the fact that for whatever reason you decided to curl your hair you weren’t treated differently, you weren’t denied jobs, you weren’t considered ugly, you weren’t underrepresented in the media, you weren’t detained without cause. Your fashion choices were celebrated instead of being criticized, so no, it’s not wanting the opposite of what each one have, it’s one part having the complete liberty to even Afro themselves and the other part not being able to walk the streets exactly like they look so then needing to change towards the way the privileged part looks.
I got relaxers in 6th and 7th grade. I had a lottt of hair, but it got incredibly thin, almost to the point when it looked like I had none. My mom decided I should go natural, and it was the best decision I made. My hair became thicker, healthier, and straightens just as well without a relaxer. I can also do twists and braids without extensions (I have in twists now). Plus there are no more burns. My mom went natural too, and neither of us regret it.
I'm so glad the relaxer industry, as we speak, is going down the hill and closing down. It's an abuse to have relaxer in...i remember the torture I went through as a young girl. I stopped at 22 and I'm 43 now and have not regretted it! It's the best thing i ever did
i miss my hair. god how i miss my hair. you don't appreciate what you have till its gone. and i always appreciated my nappy/kinky hair.... i did relax my hair once, but not because i thought straight hair was "better"...but just to make my hair style at that time(braided), easier to manage. and because i was too lazy to dread lock it. i was too lazy to be constantly twirling my hair. i prefered some female to just braid it. and yes, it was beautiful.
The part with the chemist dissolving aluminum cans in sodium hydroxide is a little misleading....yes sodium hydroxide is a very caustic chemical but the sodium hydroxide used in salon and at home relaxers is not pure sodium hydroxide and the chemical is mixed will all kinds of emulsifiers, oils, and conditioners to buffer it. As a former cosmetologist I can say that yes a relaxer should be used with caution but they are generally safe when properly applied. Also while relaxers are primarily marketed towards people with African or African American hair textures any person with curly to very curly hair regardless of race or ethnicity can use a relaxer to straighten their hair and they do indeed use them. That all said I do not believe a relaxer is appropriate for any child under the age of 12 because their hair follicles and scalp are still developing and it can cause irreparable damage.
+jazminelovenicki A relaxer should not burn, irritate, or scar the scalp if it is properly applied. You want to wait at least 7 days after shampooing before applying a relaxer. The entire scalp should based as well with some type of scalp base or grease and you want to avoid getting the relaxer on the scalp as much as possible. If you or your client is ever experiencing any type of burning sensation then the relaxer should be rinsed and neutralized immediately do not try to wait it out to get the hair straight rinse it out immediately!
+jazminelovenicki I understand your point, I really do, but relaxers aren't the only chemical service that can cause scalp burns and sores. Hair bleaches and lighteners used to turn dark hair blonde can cause severe burns as well as the chemicals used in curly perms and sometimes even ordinary hair color can cause burns and sores in some people. Any time you put any type of chemical in your hair you're taking a risk. Everyone's hair and scalp is different and I always encourage women to educate themselves about their own hair and know what their hair and scalp can and cannot handle. There are plenty of women who have been relaxing their hair for years and have never had a problem with burns or their hair breaking off. That said if you do have problems with relaxers burning you or damaging your hair then you really should either learn to wear your hair in its natural state or find an alternative method of straightening it. Relaxers or any chemical service is not for everybody and it certainly should never be applied to a child's head!
I think much more research needs to be done on the effects of relaxers on women's health. I watched a video where a lady, back in the 90s, claimed to have had a chance to see the brains of 3 dead black women. 2 of them, with relaxers, had dark spots on their brain that were spongy and corroded. She said it looked as if something had been eating at the brain. The lady that didn't have the spots was natural. The killing part of the video was that the mortician said that it was a common thing that he saw in black women with relaxed hair due to the chemicals. Now I seriously doubt that the majority of beauticians are being meticulous in perm application to not get any perm on the scalp.... If that were the case black women wouldn't be almost unanimous in their perm burn experiences. The majority wouldn't know how it feels to have a burning scalp that you have to sit through just a little longer to get it straighter. As a matter of fact 3 of my passed beauticians told me to hold out while I burned. Never once did they offer to rinse out my relaxers. I'm not even going to get started on the women who self relax... One of my beauticians recently passed from years of exposure to the chemicals in relaxers. People are going to do what they want obviously, however, it isn't fair that they aren't doing this (to themselves and kids as young as 1)with complete knowledge. The only thing they have is the hope that they do it "right".
I got my first perm when I was 6th grade. I grew it out and went natural because there was a lot of breakage. Then I got a texturizer sophomore year. I took/take much better care of my hair now and I only get it texturized twice a year. It makes me wince seeing people getting there kids hair permed so young and so often. They think their natural hair is bad when it's not. I've been natural and permed and I love it both ways.
I started relaxing my hair at age 3.But now that I'm older , I decided to go natural. It's a bit difficult when you don't know what your hair wants and what makes it grow and all. But I'm glad I'm natural
My mom did this shit to me when I was young. My sisters had a different texture and didn’t need them. So I was the only one tortured. I got burned real bad once and had scabs all over my scalp. You think that would keep my mom from doing it. Nope. Still got perms. Perm free for 15 years now 🙌🏽

I stopped relaxing my hair about a yr ago, wish someone would do a video on what happens to the body after a person stops using it, how long does it take to rid your body of chemicals from body???
ugh I'm so glad I don't get relaxers anymore...I never knew how to care for my relaxed hair, so I never had any significant growth. But now that I don't change the composition of my hair, its much easier to care for, and it's growing like a weed, and if I want I can have it bone straight, but most time, I don't even want to anymore :)
I cut all my relaxed hair off about a month ago... I WILL NOT GO BACK TO THE RELAXER...Lol! My hair may be short, but no burns, I can scratch if I want to (not that I have b/c my hair is moisturized so no dryness) just brush and go...
Im now natural for the second time in adulthood and I dont knock anyone for getting a relaxer however I am against parents who do it to children that have no say in the matter. Its damaging and sometimes that damage can be irreversible. My mom rip gave me a relaxer at i think 5 because she had no idea how to handle curly hair. I said curly because i dont believe in "naps" just curl patterns. she didnt understand why my hair wasnt "good" like hers. Now I am a licensed Cosmetologist lol

At the age of 20 I had very long heathy African Arabic hair but after relaxing it i ended up with thin weak hair and now am done with it. I had decided to grow my own beautiful long curly hair. I love my African beauty.
And that is a good point! I'm in the same boat as you. What you have to do now is learn to think about taking care of your hair in a whole new way. forget about what you used to like because you've never taken care of your own real hair. If you look online youll find tons of tips but ultimately its up to what works for you and your hair. Going natural I realized my hair loves water and combing it wet is so much easier. Good luck.

Some of our men base their selection of a woman based on the texture of her hair. Our beauty is unique, diverse, and authentic. We must stop adopting European standards of beauty and regain who we are as African people. WE are the most hated, most disrespected, and the MOST ENVIED.
also, I wear it natrual a lot, about a week a month, and i love the way that it looks, but since I've got a little french and indian and me I have to work to get some parts of my hair curly. also, to maintain my curly hair and keep it mousterized is hardder than straightening it. still, i love to do it, and Im just glad my hair is healthy now and i can scratch all i want. so whatever you do (weave, perm, natural, dread locks, etc.) just do what makes you feel good and keeps ur hair healthy.
I have naturally curly course hair and use to get my hair straightened with chemicals. A lot of cultures straighten their hair. Japanese use relaxers and straighteners and have (in my opinion) created the best ones. I stopped doing this process but, sometimes think about going back to it. Specially on these muggy hot Georgia days when I use the iron and products to straighten my hair only to walk out and it blow up on me in the humidity! Brazilian Woman have been straightening their hair just as long as anybody. Every culture desires what they don't have-straight hair/curly hair/Blonde hair (My natural Blonde daughter dyes hers Red).. and I know a lot of straight haired girls who sit under chemicals for perms to get tight curls. I don't know why everything always turns into a race issue. It's a preference for a look. I am starting to love my course hair now that I colored it blonde (Oh.. that's something I see all cultures sometimes want to do to their hair...even Black Woman). You should get the hair you want and if you can't get it with the hairdresser, by a wig or get extension! Bottom line. The best hair is healthy hair no matter the texture or color.
A relaxer can grow your hair you just have to know how to care of 😊 easy as that , the doctor is right it breaks the protein bonds of your hair one of the reasons why there's protein treatment , it is a chemical Duh it is gonna burn if you leave for a long time just like a flat iron , but I didn't like how he said "black women trying to look white " he's not an ignorant person he's really funny and a great father😀but what he said was ignorant , i agree that a 1 or 6 years old child should not get a perm regardless if is a kiddie one , BUT this 21 century and almost 2 months for 2017 and you don't have to feel pressured to try to have natural or relaxed hair just go with what makes more comfortable ❤️✌️

I remember before I started my first day of kindergarten, my mom gave me 2 choices. I could rock a jheri curl or get a Just For ME. I didn't have a choice. My hair stayed broke off because she never maintained it, just so long as it was straight. When i was 14 I started doing my own hair. I experimented with natural off and on. But now, i'm full fledged natural and I love it.
Thank you that is so true. Relaxers require more maintenance but if you take care of it your hair will grow and be beautiful. Natural and Relaxed are both good. I think people should only get relaxers because they want to not because they feel pressured. Please parents do not put perms in your children's hair until they are old enough to take care of their own hair at least 12. Until then use water and grease on their hair and it will come out pretty. Teach them how to take care of their hair.

I dont blame the kid. U have to understand its a generational thing. After slavery, & black women got working in society, they wore wigs. ALL THE TIME. Their hair just wasnt acceptable. No one was taught how to care 4 d naturally dry afro hair. Ecspecially in the terrible weather, it was easier to wear a wig (check out all d artists in the 50's, 60's). When the relaxers came, mothers relaxed their childrens hair from around the age of 6 (my moms generation). Relaxers were the norm. And they also grew up & relaxed their kids hairs (our generation - i'm 32). The whole thing started in reaction to society until it became - what everybody does. The odd thing would be to not relax ur hair. So when i read ur comment, i & a lot of black girls like me feel confused. "Like are u implying i hate myself, my relaxed hair IS the norm". In our generation, people dont know better is the main reason why people do it - we've done it all our life. Its not bcos of self-hatred. More people are getting educated about their hair now & going natural & this is still a learning curve for black women. As i said some of us never even knew what our natural hair looked like till we were 30. The good thing is i think its stopping at my generation cos videos like this has got pple thinking. I see a lot of children wt afro hair now.

wow 10 years later and i’m so happy to see how we’ve grown. now i walk down the street and see beautiful afros, braids, cornrows locs etc... this video was made 2 years before I went natural, and it was hard as a kid because no one was natural at my school, but i still was confident, and i was proud to have my hair. now i’ve been loc’d for a year, and i’m really happy, keep on loving your hair y’all.

i had a friend who is mixed and has naturally biggish loose curls and combing my hair one day she watched me in disdain and said when are you gonna straighten your hair so i was like when are you gonna straighten yours. people think is a right of passage for all black women to get a perm. i am mixed with hair more on the afro side, i have never gotten it relaxed and i'm proud!

As a white european guy it sure is news to me that black people do this. I also saw that Vice documentary about caribbean fashion week when they were in Jamaica and talked to people about skin bleeching. That was scary to watch.
On one hand I think that it has to do with residue from slavery about beauty standards. But I also think it has to do with greed. I live in Sweden and when the sun shows up here in June and July people run outside to desperately get a tan. The newspapers often print articles with warnings about not tanning too much and to think about the risk of skin cancer. Tanning beds and fake tan sprays and all of that crap.

Yep. That is how the beauty industry makes its millions-- by telling everyone, all the time that we are not ok the way God made us. If you are white, you need to have darker skin, fuller lips, a different hair color, "volumizing" shampoos for more hair fullness, etc. If you are black, you need to have lighter skin, straighter hair, slimmer noses, etc. They have us all chasing something unnatural and if they had their way, we'd all look like Kardashians-- artificial, racially ambiguous, and oddly resembling felines after a certain point.

I actually had the opposite experience as a white girl/woman. Most of the boys and young men went for the darker girls/women, with dark skin, dark hair and dark eyes. Said they were exotic, beautiful and sexy. I used to wish I had black hair and darker skin, and I paid to have curls in my hair. Also, because my hair was very blonde (it's now more white :), I used to get accused of dyeing my hair, which I never did. And I heard a lot of dumb blonde jokes and jeering. (all the shows with 'dumb blondes' didn't help) One young man even tried to convince me that there is actual research that proves that blondes are dumb. On top of that, just for being white, I've had all kinds of assumptions made about me that weren't/aren't true. I had a lot of self-loathing to heal, from different harsh experiences.
I'm still working on it. I'm not bitter, I'm just trying to educate. There is prejudice and unkindness expressed in every race, but thankfully most everyone expresses kindness and good will. The Truth is that every single person on this planet is Beautiful, Soulful, and Worthy of Love and Respect. I will endeavor to have no preconceived notions so that I can see us all as we Truly are, and to have Beautiful experiences with all the Beautiful people that I meet. Metta. Namaste.

After I saw this movie, I started seriously considering going natural. (I had thought about it before but never thought I could do it) about a month ago I cut of my relaxed ends and I love my hair!! I have never had so many compliments about my hair or had some much fun with it. So for now its natural for me!

I place hair relaxers in the same category as skin bleaching, double eye-lid surgery, and anorexia; it's basically taking dangerous and even deadly initiatives to achieve a certain look. Why can't we all just be happy with how God made us? I'm also really annoyed by the "can't comb natural hair" excuse. Comb your hair IMMEDIATELY after you take a shower when it's still damp, moisturizers help. I, with super "nappy" hair (that I love!), usually don't have to put in moisturizer at all. Do u! :)

I did my bigchop 2weeks ago and guess what? I found a bald spot (well not completely bold, barely there). Relaxer did that, I took care of my hair despite it being relaxed so there is no other way I could have got that. Never realised relaxer could damage your scalp. GLAD I'm going natural.

Because smooth curly hair is accepted, but giant piles of frizz like what I had? No. In my heart I find curls incredibly beautiful but straight was the norm and I didn't want to be bullied anymore.

I completely agree. My sister who is 35 has a completely different mindset about natural hair now and is raising my niece to love her natural hair. I don't even think she herself knows what her natural hair looks like.

“I just don’t know how to take care of it...” that excuse is unacceptable. I went natural in 7th grade (big chopped) and at first I didn’t even know the curl pattern of my hair !!! But I wanted natural hair so bad that I took the time to learn the history behind it, and how to care for it. I was 13 at the time, and now I’m 15 (in the 9th grade.) I take care of my sisters hair so momma won’t relax it like she did mine, cause I want them to keep their culture. Moral of the story that ExCuSe is getting rly old. There are hairstylists, CZcams, and other resources that can teach you. You’ve just got to be willing to learn.
I remember perms, but what i remember the most is how thin my hair used to feel after my mom did it. I felt like I could see my scalp through my hair. It's not for everyone, my hair is definitely healthier now that it's natural.

This is really sad. Strangely enough, as a white woman, I used to put chemicals in my hair to make it curly. I didn't think it looked pretty unless it was curly. I don't do that anymore. I still admire curls though. They are so pretty to me. But it is strange that we sometimes want the opposite of what we are. Some white people want to be darker; some black people want to be lighter. Some white people want curls; some black people want straight hair. Just goes to show you that we're all beautiful, we just don't always know it. My hope is that we all know, see, and appreciate our own unique beauty. Because everyone is Beautiful just the way we are! And that's the Truth!!

I got relaxers in 6th and 7th grade. I had a lottt of hair, but it got incredibly thin, almost to the point when it looked like I had none. My mom decided I should go natural, and it was the best decision I made. My hair became thicker, healthier, and straightens just as well without a relaxer. I can also do twists and braids without extensions (I have in twists now). Plus there are no more burns. My mom went natural too, and neither of us regret it.

i did relax my hair once, but not because i thought straight hair was "better"...but just to make my hair style at that time(braided), easier to manage. and because i was too lazy to dread lock it. i was too lazy to be constantly twirling my hair. i prefered some female to just braid it.

The part with the chemist dissolving aluminum cans in sodium hydroxide is a little misleading....yes sodium hydroxide is a very caustic chemical but the sodium hydroxide used in salon and at home relaxers is not pure sodium hydroxide and the chemical is mixed will all kinds of emulsifiers, oils, and conditioners to buffer it. As a former cosmetologist I can say that yes a relaxer should be used with caution but they are generally safe when properly applied. Also while relaxers are primarily marketed towards people with African or African American hair textures any person with curly to very curly hair regardless of race or ethnicity can use a relaxer to straighten their hair and they do indeed use them. That all said I do not believe a relaxer is appropriate for any child under the age of 12 because their hair follicles and scalp are still developing and it can cause irreparable damage.

+jazminelovenicki A relaxer should not burn, irritate, or scar the scalp if it is properly applied. You want to wait at least 7 days after shampooing before applying a relaxer. The entire scalp should based as well with some type of scalp base or grease and you want to avoid getting the relaxer on the scalp as much as possible. If you or your client is ever experiencing any type of burning sensation then the relaxer should be rinsed and neutralized immediately do not try to wait it out to get the hair straight rinse it out immediately!
You shouldn't use anything that has the POTENTIAL to do that to your scalp period...
+jazminelovenicki I understand your point, I really do, but relaxers aren't the only chemical service that can cause scalp burns and sores. Hair bleaches and lighteners used to turn dark hair blonde can cause severe burns as well as the chemicals used in curly perms and sometimes even ordinary hair color can cause burns and sores in some people. Any time you put any type of chemical in your hair you're taking a risk. Everyone's hair and scalp is different and I always encourage women to educate themselves about their own hair and know what their hair and scalp can and cannot handle. There are plenty of women who have been relaxing their hair for years and have never had a problem with burns or their hair breaking off. That said if you do have problems with relaxers burning you or damaging your hair then you really should either learn to wear your hair in its natural state or find an alternative method of straightening it. Relaxers or any chemical service is not for everybody and it certainly should never be applied to a child's head!
I think much more research needs to be done on the effects of relaxers on women's health. I watched a video where a lady, back in the 90s, claimed to have had a chance to see the brains of 3 dead black women. 2 of them, with relaxers, had dark spots on their brain that were spongy and corroded. She said it looked as if something had been eating at the brain. The lady that didn't have the spots was natural. The killing part of the video was that the mortician said that it was a common thing that he saw in black women with relaxed hair due to the chemicals. Now I seriously doubt that the majority of beauticians are being meticulous in perm application to not get any perm on the scalp.... If that were the case black women wouldn't be almost unanimous in their perm burn experiences. The majority wouldn't know how it feels to have a burning scalp that you have to sit through just a little longer to get it straighter. As a matter of fact 3 of my passed beauticians told me to hold out while I burned. Never once did they offer to rinse out my relaxers. I'm not even going to get started on the women who self relax... One of my beauticians recently passed from years of exposure to the chemicals in relaxers. People are going to do what they want obviously, however, it isn't fair that they aren't doing this (to themselves and kids as young as 1)with complete knowledge. The only thing they have is the hope that they do it "right".
I got my first perm when I was 6th grade. I grew it out and went natural because there was a lot of breakage. Then I got a texturizer sophomore year. I took/take much better care of my hair now and I only get it texturized twice a year. It makes me wince seeing people getting there kids hair permed so young and so often. They think their natural hair is bad when it's not. I've been natural and permed and I love it both ways.
I started relaxing my hair at age 3.But now that I'm older , I decided to go natural. It's a bit difficult when you don't know what your hair wants and what makes it grow and all. But I'm glad I'm natural

My mom did this shit to me when I was young. My sisters had a different texture and didn’t need them. So I was the only one tortured. I got burned real bad once and had scabs all over my scalp. You think that would keep my mom from doing it. Nope. Still got perms. Perm free for 15 years now 🙌🏽

ugh I'm so glad I don't get relaxers anymore...I never knew how to care for my relaxed hair, so I never had any significant growth. But now that I don't change the composition of my hair, its much easier to care for, and it's growing like a weed, and if I want I can have it bone straight, but most time, I don't even want to anymore :)

Im now natural for the second time in adulthood and I dont knock anyone for getting a relaxer however I am against parents who do it to children that have no say in the matter. Its damaging and sometimes that damage can be irreversible. My mom rip gave me a relaxer at i think 5 because she had no idea how to handle curly hair. I stopped getting relaxer because I was tired of being so plain. I wanted to stick out. I didn't want to be like the millions of other girls in the world who have straight hair.
At the age of 20 I had very long heathy African Arabic hair but after relaxing it i ended up with thin weak hair and now am done with it. I had decided to grow my own beautiful long curly hair. I love my African beauty.
And that is a good point! I'm in the same boat as you. What you have to do now is learn to think about taking care of your hair in a whole new way. forget about what you used to like because you've never taken care of your own real hair. If you look online youll find tons of tips but ultimately its up to what works for you and your hair. Going natural I realized my hair loves water and combing it wet is so much easier. Good luck.

also, I wear it natrual a lot, about a week a month, and i love the way that it looks, but since I've got a little french and indian and me I have to work to get some parts of my hair curly. also, to maintain my curly hair and keep it mousterized is hardder than straightening it. still, i love to do it, and Im just glad my hair is healthy now and i can scratch all i want.
so whatever you do (weave, perm, natural, dread locks, etc.) just do what makes you feel good and keeps ur hair healthy.

I have naturally curly course hair and use to get my hair straightened with chemicals. A lot of cultures straighten their hair. Japanese use relaxers and straighteners and have (in my opinion) created the best ones. I stopped doing this process but, sometimes think about going back to it. Specially on these muggy hot Georgia days when I use the iron and products to straighten my hair only to walk out and it blow up on me in the humidity! Brazilian Woman have been straightening their hair just as long as anybody. Every culture desires what they don't have-straight hair/curly hair/Blonde hair (My natural Blonde daughter dyes hers Red).. and I know a lot of straight haired girls who sit under chemicals for perms to get tight curls. I don't know why everything always turns into a race issue. It's a preference for a look. I am starting to love my course hair now that I colored it blonde (Oh.. that's something I see all cultures sometimes want to do to their hair...even Black Woman). You should get the hair you want and if you can't get it with the hairdresser, by a wig or get extension! Bottom line. The best hair is healthy hair no matter the texture or color.
A relaxer can grow your hair you just have to know how to care of 😊 easy as that , the doctor is right it breaks the protein bonds of your hair one of the reasons why there's protein treatment , it is a chemical Duh it is gonna burn if you leave for a long time just like a flat iron , but I didn't like how he said "black women trying to look white " he's not an ignorant person he's really funny and a great father😀but what he said was ignorant , i agree that a 1 or 6 years old child should not get a perm regardless if is a kiddie one , BUT this 21 century and almost 2 months for 2017 and you don't have to feel pressured to try to have natural or relaxed hair just go with what makes more comfortable ❤️✌️
amen i hate the way all the naturals are superior ........................its judgemental, i just like my hair to feel smooth i dont like curls on me i like it straight my hair my choice

I remember before I started my first day of kindergarten, my mom gave me 2 choices. I could rock a jheri curl or get a Just For ME. I didn't have a choice. My hair stayed broke off because she never maintained it, just so long as it was straight. When i was 14 I started doing my own hair. I experimented with natural off and on. But now, i'm full fledged natural and I love it.
I asked my mom if i could get relaxer and she said "Like Hell!" lol
Thank you that is so true. Relaxers require more maintenance but if you take care of it your hair will grow and be beautiful. Natural and Relaxed are both good. I think people should only get relaxers because they want to not because they feel pressured. Please parents do not put perms in your children's hair until they are old enough to take care of their own hair at least 12. Until then use water and grease on their hair and it will come out pretty. Teach them how to take care of their hair.
