    I’ve got some dimmable lamps. My wife and I don’t care for the order of brightness. Ie: from the off position… upon touch the metal to initiate power… the lamp starts off in its lowest setting; then gets brighter with each tap until it cycles back to the off position. We’d like it to cycle backwards. As in, the lamp starts in its brightest setting and then dims downward with each tap. We have a new born… the light coming on full strength is a bit jarring to everyone, not just the baby.

    Thank-you for the video, I have a touch lamp and the sensor went out. Payed a trip to Home Depot, picked up a new sensor and installed. Lamp working like new.

    Thanks (old post) but relevant information. I installed a westec into a floor lamp, having trouble, not enough space for module due to counterweighted base.

    • @TheGarageEngineer
      @TheGarageEngineer  Před rokem

      Those weights do get in the way. Hope you find a better locations.

    • @Ojb_1959
      @Ojb_1959 Před rokem +1

      I just cracked the counterweight into a couple pieces with a hammer then JB welded the 2-3 pieces inside the base leaving room for the module & connector’s. On another lamp I took out the weight and shaved off some with my grinder to fit the module.

    The best (sometimes the only) way to find which wire is neutral is that the neutral insulation has a little ridge on it NOT by finding "writing". Also, fluorescent will not work. Get the hot / neutral wrong and you fry your control switch.

    I tried doing this on our floor standing lamp. The stands and the shelves are all metal. Touching the metal ring attached to that little black box turns the lamp on and off etc. But attaching this ring to the lamp stands does nothing unfortunately.

    Hi there, great video!
    So, when I was little we had a few touch lamp planters ("Planterns") that had this sort of wiring, but, the lamp post is in the middle of a potted plant! Whenver we touch the plant or the soil, the light would either dim or turn on/off.
    Can you PLEASE do a demonstration of how to DIY this using a similar setup! I can't find one for purchase anywhere! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

    What happens if one of the wires in the base of the lamp becomes loose and touches the metallic surface, making it live? In the UK we have to connect metal parts to Ground if they are used to enclose live connections. What are the rules in the U.S.?

    • @dylanwhite6539
      @dylanwhite6539 Před 3 lety

      Not sure as to why but pretty much no lamp ever has a ground pin. I believe it might be the double insulated code that allows for this.

    I have a custom Bare metal base, and I’m thinking of painting it with hammered finish spray paint. Probably 2 coats, and maybe one clear coat. Dose anyone know if the 3 way dimmer will still operate with the base Being painted? Or will this make it, non-conducive to human touch?

    • @tomar3
      @tomar3 Před rokem +1

      I think you'll need an exposed metal part to act as the switch. I think it works on a change in capacitance though so maybe it might work because the paint may have a small amount of conductivity that the switch will be sensitive enough to detect. Best bet would be to give it a go and find out

    Hi , I have a touch lamp I would like to paint. Will the touch part still work if I paint the lamp????

    • @TheGarageEngineer
      @TheGarageEngineer  Před 3 lety +1

      The touching of the lamp grounds the circuit allowing the light to turn on. By painting the lamp it will not allow the connection to be completed. Maybe you could leave a section of the lamp unpainted?

    I installed a touch module to my 3-way lamp and have no light yet. When I turn the switch there is no off for some reason because my power detector pen stays lit as I touch the lamp with it. Any thoughts anyone 🤔

    • @TheGarageEngineer

      maybe the 3 way lamp has a mechaincal switch to change between the 3 settings?

    • @ahaku3135
      @ahaku3135 Před 3 lety

      The yellow wire is the signal wire (switch).Just attach it to the metal base.I added this to a cabinet light .Just spliced a longer wire and attached it to a metal hinge

    And lamps (BULB) needs to be a dimmable lamp
