  • As you may know if you have watched our previous video, we have been running a Cupra Born e-Boost as the AutoEV long term test car. It's been put through the rigours of family life, driven across Europe and generally just used as we would do with an everyday car. In this video, Bryan and his partner Liz, both previous Seat Leon Cupra owners, give their verdicts on whether the new e-Boost model delivers that specialness that they loved about their old cars, making it the Born of choice.

    I have a white v2 58kw with heat pump & panoramic roof !done over 4500miles only problem i have had is the bloody Cupra app! couldn't personalise the Cupra. Looks really smart in white with tinted roof etc. Most of the miles done to work 60mile round trip. Only used a public charger once since i got it! Charge to 80% charged it once to 100% Definitely more efficient on A roads got 5.2 miles/kw 4 on motorway at 60! however recently as temp drop got aprox 3.6/kw and on A roads 4 to 4.2/ kw As for Hot hatch, maybe not, but its adequate compared to most cars on the road, also it has to be judged against other electric cars! bit unfair to judge against petrol since they are a lot lighter!

    I just received my Cupra
    Metallic white panroof heatpump eboost with 20inch Firestorm alloy
    With Michelin pilot sports. Included in wheel upgrade you get DCC. A must.
    In V3 trim I LOVE IT.

      Hi, I am considering buying a borne. Does the infotainment work well? A friend has the formentor and had a lot of issues with the infotainment system.

      @@farhanr6191 hi I had the Formentor as well, that was the one reason I traded it in for the Born.. I honestly have had no issues with the Born.. sorry for the late response just seen your message

    The 77kw version has DCC and Michelin Pilot Sport tyres which I believe makes a difference to the fun factor. My wife will probably get her v3 77kw probably in January.

      Probably, lets hope it arrives. 77kw is slower due to battery weight.

    Fantastic review but just one note regards the audio, I’ve got me TV on at my usual volume level and I can only just hear you guys. I’ve got to turn my tv up to 3 times my usual volume but then the adds come on and I’m stuck on the ceiling cos it’s that loud.

    Is the screen too small or do you just want % of charge rather than range?
    We don't need bigger screens in my view so what is the problem?

    Thanks for the long review. I ordered a Cupra Born already 11 month ago and still waiting. About your point the Born shouldn’t have a Cupra batch. Seat/Cupra has decided that all electric cars are now named Cupra. At the moment there won’t be any electric cars from Seat. If this was a good idea, I don’t know. The other points with the infotainment and the steering wheel button is not to everyone’s taste but way over discussed. I drove a ID3 now for 10k km and I never had any real problem. Like someone said here after a day or two I learned it. My other car a Seat Tarraco FR PHEV is a bit more traditional but modern cars are much more complex to operate so it takes its time. I hope to have my Born before years end.

    The problem I have with "touch screen buttons" (and always have had, even before EV's), for functions that you need to access whilst driving is that, unless you're on an incredibly smooth road, your hand is constantly bouncing up and down and it can be incredibly difficult to hit the button you want without taking your eyes off the road for quite a while, to focus on it. Seems to me that car manufacturers have solved a problem that didn't exist - i.e. I don't think anyone has EVER complained that they wished they didn't have to press an actual button to turn things on or off.....! (iX3 driver)

    I’m contemplating putting down a deposit on one hear in Australia. There delivering in march 2023 with with a 82kWh battery with 511kms of range and with two options. Interior package and sports package which means headed massage seats and beats stereo and 20 inch wheels and adaptive suspension.
    My wife and I also want that little extra sparkle that the badge promises but you say it doesn’t deliver. What worries me is the performance specifications, the fact that you need to take the car to a dealer for a service to get a software update (really) and the weight of the car which is 400kg’s heavier than a Tesla 3 standard.
    So I’m in a quandary as to wether or not to buy one.
    Starting price here is AU$6200
    and $68.000 with both options delivered.

    I had one from new for three weeks.
    It had numerous software gremlins, including changing the cruise distance to minimum randomly (meaning I would suddenly end up getting too close to the car in front), chucking out hot or freezing air on start up, putting the seat heaters on, repeated reboots of the infotainment system, speed warnings resetting themselves, app issues, headlight levelling errors...
    Then the wipers stuck fully apart, and finally the charge cap stuck closed leaving me unable to power it up. Add to this a really bad rattle from the trim at the rear, and I asked for my money back.
    Guess it's the luck of the draw, and clearly some people have had better experiences. :/

    I'm 6"3, would I struggle for room in this car?
    I currently drive a 2021 Audi A3 and find my legs are always trapped between the steering wheel and centre console / drivers door.

    Got shot of mine! Trouble is the EV platform is VW and despite the stated charging speed figures, it doesn’t deliver those! When you complain they say it’s only a range (albeit it never gets in to the range!). My experience was DC charging 20-80% is more like 50-55 minutes not 35. AC charging about 80% of the time was only half charging due to some battery safe mode that apparently randomly cuts the charge so on a cheap overnight 6hr charge I was getting 20kw not 40! Big difference. I had mine for 4 months, it then spent 6 weeks in garage and I got a BM i4 instead which is brilliant

    Had my born now since may , love the car , mines a 58kwh v2 in quasar grey , it was one of the ‘stock cars ‘ if you didn’t know about that cupra took orders and also got borns in stock at launch , I had one ordered but took a stock car , I’ve done just short of 3k miles efficiency was excellent in summer but winter and heating on it’s taken a drop more than I expected

      Yes V2 is similar. I was told in June factory orders were October (ish) to Jan 2023.

    77 kWh becomes a 4 seater... What does that mean exactly? Do they leave out the middle seat belt? Do you void the insurance if you use it? Or is it just a matter of them recommending to only use it occasionally?

      @@AutoEV aw crap. I do need the 3rd backseat a few times a year. And also the long range for my day to day life. Oh well, I guess I'll hold on to my diesel a little longer while more models show up to the party.

    Its fumny most people are annoyed by the infotainment. For me i think its pleasant enough. I have no issues with the touch sensitive buttons

    Battery life channel said that his id3, ( which this is a version of) has lost 10% battery range and capacity in 2 years ?

      He did ALOT of rapid charging to 100% most will use a home 7kw charger , mines never been on a rapid yet and usually to 80%

      If DC rapid charging then yes it can happen. A driver in the USA killed his battery by rapid charging it twice a day. VW group guarantee 70% over 7 years so you can loose 30%.

    I might get one of these in Germany.... Where it is only around 35000 euros after rebates, for the 58kw version.. and they throw in the heat pump here.. The Renault Megane is way more expensive.... More like ID4 price.

    I have a V3 58kw non-e-boost Born on order (with pano roof 😂) to replace my mk7 GTI. On the test drive the first thing I noticed was the higher driving position, more SUV than hot hatch.
    Also, since the Born weighs ~1000 lbs (450kg) more than the GTI it certainly didn't feel as sporty, I guess physics is a thing, I'll just have to learn to accept that 😂.
    I also wonder how much the lack of engine sound make EVs "feel" less sporty - there is something about dropping down into third and flooring the throttle which can't be replicated in an EV (yet) even though the performance may be there.
    I do worry about those pesky steering wheel buttons though ☹️.

      Hi. I made the exact same car transition as you are about to make. Hot hatch, the Cupra isn't. But I was wanting to embrace EVs and the Born was the one for me. Don't miss my GTI performance one bit except the interior quality. Cupra not as nice s my old GTi inside. Wheel buttons? Not as bad as everyone makes out. I suppose the volume is rubbish but I got used to it very quickly. 8nfotsinment and getting around 8t is a doddle. Performance? More than adequate for me. Don't feel much of a diff 0-60. It's just a different delivery. After 70, tails off and battery will drain quick . Don't miss an ICE one but. 0 regrets.

      @@SigmaJAD The move to EVs is not irreversible, yet, if I don't get on with the Born I can aways go back to a GTI - a mk8 after the face-lift brings back buttons and knobs 😂.

      I got a V2 58kw and although it handles nicely with the ESC in sports, and the lane assist off, you do feel the weight. This, I feel is what makes it more warm than hot hatch, although it works well for the weight. I do wish I'd added the dynamic pack though, but I didn't think I'd need it. You get so little time when test driving a car, and I think I drove a V3, and now realise it likely had the dynamic pack, as it felt better than the car I have now.
      Having said this, I feel the poor tyre choice on the 19 inch wheels also affect the handling. I hope to get some 225/45 R19 sports tyres on the car when its due for tyres.
      I come from an RCZ, so you can imagine the gulf between a 1200kg coupe and 1800kg hatchback!

    I got attuned to the infotainment after 1 day. The criticism of it and steering wheel controls is now frankly nauseous. It's not bad at all.

      I’ve been driving lots of VW Group product for quite some time now, and recently had a Multivan…..which oddly has physical steering wheel controls and they are so much better. Sorry, I just think touch sensitive controls on a steering wheel is a poor design. Agree to disagree.

      I have a Golf 8 with real buttons on the steering wheel. They work well, cannot be pressed mistakely, and no one has ever complained about them.

      Try picking from 3 alternative routes, cos you can't zoom in. Then try and find the reroute button.... There ain't one. Also, just zooming in in the map is yuk.... Pinch to zoom sucks.... Gimme a plus and mm inis button please.

      @@AutoEV Totally agree, anyone that drives cars understands that capacitive buttons on a steering wheel are a no go.
      With buttons you can feel them with your thumbs, reducing the need to take your eyes off the road.

    I feel you need to learn more about the car before reviewing, it’s the same old story, the volume sliders are terrible, when they work perfectly ok. Who drives around constantly adjusting it anyway! No single button for heated seats, when there is, a double tap on the heating control switches them on. Vast majority of long term owners, inc myself, never accidentally press buttons while turning the wheel, and if you do rub the button, nothing happens! They are not touch sensitive, well at least not on the latest models. They have to be physically pressed, same for the cruise controls. I find the infotainment actually very good, maybe that’s cause I came from a Skoda which was honestly the worst infotainment and ac controls I have ever experienced. I think your review is pretty unfair, but I guess it’s fairly common when you have limited time with it. Cheers PS, nobody advertises this as a HOT HATCH.

      I constantly adjust audio volume. I turn up the radio/Spotify when a favourite song comes on, or when I want to hear the news headlines, then turn down afterwards.
      You will find that these controls are a constant source of frustration for many, not just me. I have no real issue for touch sensitive controls, but only when they are properly executed in design and functionality. Unfortunately no one who drove this car during its tenure with us think they are.

    The car was supposed to be a SEAT but was given Cupra as SEAT are disappearing as a name. The E Boost is a gimmick to try and add Cupra sportiness but fails. I drove an Boost and wasn't that impressed especially trading in an AUDI S3 so bought the standard V2 in Grey (it does have parking option I didn't really want but 9 to 12 month wait was too long for me). Alloys a bit disappointing as there is a copper effect wheel available in Europe and possibly in UK. Infotainment can lag sometimes and even lock up the screen. My 2017 Hyundai I30N infotainment system was far better. Perhaps there is too much reliance on the screen for functions and saving 1 button for the rear windows is just silly. Seems stupid your car profile can't include preferred drive mode settings and climate settings so you don't have to spend 5 minutes setting everything before you set off even after stopping at the local Express Supermarket for 2 minutes. Also wheel bolt caps fall off too easy as I have lost 2 (no magnets in them, why ?). Bigger battery only of use if you do daily commute on motorways as you are just pulling around more weight and less efficient kwh per mile (Audi etron same spec as my Born does 30 to 40 miles less range due to its size). Good car but if VW group sorted slow infotainment, more options on wheels and some extra bits, some REAL buttons and even the option to add extra battery cells (2 needed to get 77 kwh from 58 kwh, I have the workshop manual for the Born) to increase range (these could be rented from VW / Cupra and just slot in for the couple of annual long trips ?)

      There are no plans to get rid of Seat name, it was rebranded as Cupra so they could justify the price tag etc and place it along side the ID3
