Or for the people who read Hamilton The Revolution. And lin explains that this was more of a scene than a song so thats why it never was on the studio album
I always took that as a purposeful contrast, rather than directly grieving he poured himself into his work. Especially if you believe they had a romantic relationship historically, this puts more context into him separating himself from Eliza. It makes the second act as a whole even more heartbreaking for me.
So there's an official Hamilton book that has the lyrics to every song and pages about the history and behind the scenes things. There are footnotes in the lyrics that give more insight into the writing and the history and occasionally point out historical inaccuracies that were included to make the play simpler or better. This was the footnote included in Lauren's Interlude: "Here's the thing about Hamilton's response: it's more telling when he's quiet than when he has something to say. This was true of historical Hamilton as well. We have very little written record of his grieving for Laurens. For a man who has an opinion on everything, for him to hold back betrays genuine, life-changing grief. It is possible that Hamilton and Laurens were lovers at some point--Hamilton's letters to Laurens are every bit as flirtatious as his letters to the opposite sex, if not more so. If this is the case, the silence betrays an even more profound grief." In other words, Lin knew what he was doing
I just realized that this is the only part of the musical where Eliza and Alexander are actually talking to each other and not singing…somehow that makes this scene even more powerful 😞💔
Lin-Manuel Miranda believed that both Hamilton and Laurens were possibly lovers, based on the affectionate letters they exchanged with each other. After Laurens died, according to the Hamilton biography, "Hamilton shut off some compartment of his emotions and never reopened it." Hamilton, also known as the guy who writes about everything, only wrote a single paragraph about how Laurens' death affected him. That speaks volumes about how much Hamilton loved Laurens. Regardless of whether or not you see them as lovers, they clearly had a strong relationship with one another.
He was capable and has wrote paragraphs and essays more than any college student, but he in a letter to someone (I can’t remember who) he only wrote 2 sentences on Laurens death, which just sums up to “I miss him so much it hurts.”

When he sings "Tomorrow there'll be more of us!" with such conviction and strength and innocence, Anthony's voice delivers it so sincerely, it hits so much differently and harder cause you know he's dead and he won't be included in that 'us' tomorrow. He's so happy about his dream, but it won't be realized. & the way he holds that note out, like he's clinging onto life, but that's the last thing you hear from him, and he doesn't get to finish the phrase in the song. Undoubtedly my favorite scene. His voice is just so beautiful. The cold blue lighting contrasting from Hamilton’s warm yellow. The others reading the letter in the back. Didnt they also cut a line from elisa in this song saying that all the soldiers in the black battalion were returned to their masters? I feel like I remember that line because it broke my heart the most.
i didn’t realise this would actually be in the musical (due to it not being in the playlist) and when it came on the way i sunk into my seat and immediately started BALLING, my parents didn’t realise why i was crying so much until the end of the song😭✋
Everything about this hurts me 😭❤️
Going from Dear Theodosia to this to Nonstop gives me whiplash
THEY HAD TO SHOW LAFAYETTE AND MULLIGAN READING THE LETTERS TOO!!
this song always gets me choked up but watching the actors preform it has me in tears 😭😭😭
abs right after dear theodosia too, hamilton looked so happy and then he’s hit with this .((

“Tf you mean he’s dead, he’s right there.Oh, hey Philip-“
Pranked you!
i wish this was longer so it could hurt me more
I lose it when they look at each other
This scene made me cry so many times Lauren’s was amazing he didn’t deserve that
this interlude should be on spotify tbh
it literally lives in my head
this is really sad but for some reason it feels like anthony is holding in laughter and now im hysterical
I could have sworn there was a version of this where Eliza says “these men have all been returned to their masters”
The one “tomorrow there’ll be MORE OF US” is so powerful to me idk abt anyone else
It hasn't even started and I'm crying already
I've been trying to cry all night and dammit Lauren you would be the reason I have tears wouldn't you. "raise a glass to freedom..."
I get that this is supposed to be sad but…why is Anthony’s voice so calming?
What I love so much about this show is all the historical figures I grew to love and adore because of it. I credit this production for introducing me to the wonderful John Laurens.
the way anthony belts out ‘tomorrow there’ll be more of us’ always gets me teary-eyed. his voice is beautiful, and you can hear the emotion behind it. this scene is so beautifully laid out. especially how you can see hercullies and lafayette at the top of the stage reading the letter.. lin manuel miranda and the others that worked on this show are all geniuses.
