Summer Days on Our Little Farm Renovating an Old Stone Cabin

  • Summer is well & truly here on our little farm & renovations on our old stone cabin enter a new phase as we take our first step working on the interior of the building!
The beautiful stone house has been ruined in the past with messy concrete pointing, but bit by bit we're repairing & stripping it back to reveal the original walls & give our tiny house the transformation it deserves!
Elsewhere on the farm, the intense summer heat is causing our veg garden to struggle so we need to act now & rescue our plant babies before the sun overwhelms them. 🌞
LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoyed it and SUBSCRIBE to follow our journey as we document our life here in Portugal and the many DIY projects that we'll be tackling including renovating a tiny stone home, setting up systems to grow some of our own food and finally restoring the 100+ year old farm house.
Also say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you 😊
    Ricky and Victoria x
    -------------
We're Ricky & Victoria 👋 We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
We both agree that we’re not experts in anything that we do here, however we don’t let that stop us from giving it a try. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

On your weed strimmer. First check outlet of the muffler usually there's a fine screen there to keep sparks from creating a fire hazard but they will plug up. Just use propane torch. Heat till bright red and quick wire brush will look like new. Then yearly replace spark plug. Otherwise if still having issues. Just adjust carburetor. It's easy adjust the small needle valve with a L on it when motor is at idle just turn out for more fuel and in for less same thing with the jet that has a H next to it. Hold engine wide open throttle and adjust as needed

    Things to check for:
    1) spark plug fouled or corroded (clean
    egap
    eplace)
    2) fuel line\fuel filter clogged (clean
    eplace)
    3) water in fuel (drain and refill tank)

    Great solution for the windows.
For the bed sunshade some recommendations: Large span with little support against wind, rain, rain runoff, stretch and drooping. Material already cut. Start with two taller center posts connected by a horizontal beam(s). Sort of an A-frame to the outer posts. You may have to relocate or re purpose two outer posts based on elevation changes. Evaluate if additional shorter middle A-frame pieces like the center piece are required. Reduces overall forces on the sunshade and allows for runoff.
Or make two outer posts the tallest, middle posts shorter and the furthest outer posts proportionally shorter. Sort of a downwards sloping sunshade. More support, additional attachment points, better drainage. Alot depends on the wind, rain volume.

I also used plastic coated wire rather than rope to string the shade cloth. I used the same disks on the shade cloth. I used galvanized steel fence rails from chain link fencing rather than wood as they last longer and set them in concrete. Works a treat.

Hi, to help with the "touchup" on the existing fill, try a wire brush, the type you can fit in a drill They have the shape of a pine cone, leaves an uneven texture, no lines you get with a grinder face. Also works well on the concrete. Are going to use lime pointing on filling the joints, it remains flexible, better for the walls than mortar or concrete.

Great idea to install a shade cloth for the garden! 2 ideas: one is you may want to cut some U-shaped slits in them for wind to more easily flow through and prevent the entire structure from flying away in a big wind storm (speaking from experience!), and another is to tether the 4 posts, ropes pulling them away from the centre and staked to the ground. Maybe double them as trellises for beans!

A guy I know in France on hot days he ties up white sheets around his home/farm for parts of shade and act like fans 👍

You two are always very resourceful. I think the shade cloth will really help. 😉

Is it possible the fact that your garden containers are metal that they are heating up soil/roots, essentially cooking the plants?
I love your videos. You both are so natural, easy going.❤

Nice video guys, strongly advise you to reinforcing the corner posts, with e.g. stakes and steel cable. Good luck.😊

When putting the pole in the middle, put some netting on top of it. The wind will make a hole when the roof net rubbed on the pole

Pe4haps some water where you need the poles might help soften the ground

Anybody else would have just tied each corner directly to each pole ,BUT oh no you two always do things the hard way and most probably the better way lol🤗

I am in awe on every episode and each time I learn something new and finding the solutions I thought about! Great minds. I would still use some of the original stone to dab it outside as an accent finish. Love the sun tarp over the beds😊 save the veggies!

I use hoops, plastic pipe slipped over steel rods driven in the ground to make a tunnel. The hoops support the shade cloth and the ropes hold it down, not up. Good Job.

Still loving your rolling work benches. We had a wilted pumpkin plant and later in the day is was totally collapsed. A gopher chewed it off at the root.
