  • It's finally here, my reaction to Ren's Tales Trilogy, including the full version of The Tale of Jenny & Screech as well as Violet's Tale. WHAT A MASTERCLASS IN STORYTELLING, and man, THAT TWIST!
Ren continues to make my jaw drop...and this is no exception. As many of his songs have done thus far, this one also broke me and had me sobbing in more than one place, but I'm thankful you all kept recommending it, and glad I was able to finally get in a headspace where I felt confident I could handle reacting to something so intense. As always, use your own judgment about whether or not the content is safe for you at any given point.
I hope you're able to enjoy this one with me, though "enjoy" feels a little weird as a word choice, here.
    Take care of yourselves!💕

Okie as I watch I'm gonna write my thoughts & comment it when it's over. This will be a long comment, you absolutely don't have to read it! I'm just kind of journaling my experience throughout this reaction video. I have memory issues from my meds and I want to remember my thoughts later. 😅Thoughts below aren't in chronological order. I flitted around trying to format it in a way that's readable if you choose to do so.
-Wow your understanding of things like musicality, symbolism, metaphor, morality etc. combined with your ability to communicate your thoughts is phenomenal.
-Loving the format! Listening and processing, then reading the lyrics and breaking them down. Solid!
-I'm so glad you love the things I love. The knocking on the guitar, the phone call, the gunshots, rewinding with the guitar etc. This is masterful lyrical, musical, AND physical storytelling. Ren's a one man Broadway show and I'm here for it.
-I looove the word "bardcore"! I haven't heard it before but it's just (chef's kiss) perfect for Ren! I wonder if this is an actual/recognized genre or style, or if Ren is perhaps originating it in front of our eyes? I've seen other artists try something resembling this, and you're so right, it comes across as kitschy, false, and forced in my opinion. Like "oh look at me I'm so artistic and different". Ren really IS though.
-As a man, I can't ever fully comprehend what it must be like to be a woman walking alone in the streets at night. A lot of men think it's unfair for y'all to be afraid of us. But facts are facts. Of course not all of us men are evil/predators/creeps, but enough are that it's a legitimate fear. What's unfair is to expect women to ignore patterns or their internal voice. It's heartbreaking, however true it may be, though. I hate the idea that if I was walking behind a woman at night I would probably be feared, when the reality is that I'd rush in without hesitation to protect a woman (or man) in danger even if it cost me my life. Self-sacrificial love is the highest love.
-Your emotional intelligence, perceptiveness, and empathy are so impressive! Your voice was quivering with worry for poor Jenny. I could read the fear on your face. :( Gosh this is such a sad tale. I wonder how you're gonna handle the next two parts! The suspense is killing me! Ren, be gentle! Don't hurt Becca with Violet's Tale! 😭
-Your facial expressions are the best! People who are so expressive like that are giving people the superpower to read their mind without even saying anything. It's neato burrito!
-"I don't think I'm ready for Violet's Tale" ... NOBODY IS READY FOR VIOLET'S TALE BECCA! 😭(sorry for yelling lmao)
-"Even if it's a fictional story, the reality is real for a lot of people"
Yes 😢My stepdad "never left the room" either. The damage he did to my body and mind, my understanding of my self worth, confusion of what's right, of what I deserve, my own value, and confusing me about my s***uality has taken years to even just start coping with. I think it's worse for girls, maybe that's just my internal voice of "men should protect women" saying that, but what he made me do was still really horrific. He got what he deserved in the end. Ironically, in this context, he met the same fate as Screech at the hands of the police. I've done a lot of recovering thanks to the healing hands of our Lord. Everything I've gone through just makes me rely on Him all the more. He reigns.
-Your crying is breaking my effin heart. I wanna reach through the screen and hug you.
-The ending. Ugh. I lost my words but thankfully you found them and gave them back. Your analysis was expert throughout this entire trilogy. Perfect mix of emotion and rationality. I need a little time to recover from this emotional ride so I'm going to wrap up my rambling and go wash my face. You're a tour de force in the reaction genre and in no time at all, this has become my favorite channel on this entire platform.
-I'm almost scared to start watching your NF reactions because he's my favorite artist of all time and now that I know how empathetic you are, it'll be like taking the NF Journey all over again through your eyes and it's gonna hurt. I'm gonna do it anyway. 🤗
-One last thing Becca; You're my hero.

I'm writing my thoughts down too as I read you comment. Chef's kiss, never saw that put inti words before GREAT! As a man I can't fathom certain womanly things either. But I don't need to go through childbirth to know that s__t hurts. And even as a man I don't like walking down dark empty streets. Becca got through Violet's tale like a soldier gets through war. Your stepdad left you cold but I'm sure he's warmer than he wants to be down in Hell's fire. I haven't watched any NF yet either but I guess I ought to . @@user-px4sc8qi2m Hiya Richard! I did listen to it, 4 or 5 times! Even though I'm from Texas I've never been much into country music, because most of what I've heard is this new "stadium" party-type country and I just don't vibe with it that much. But WOW that was a powerful song. I've always known there's a different kind of country music that is real and raw and powerful; I just haven't taken the journey yet. Also, Jenny was a 14 year old orphan girl in high heels heading home, who walked the streets a thousand nights before, looking for a place to sleep. You can guess her profession.

This was the best analysis of The Trilogy I have heard by a long way. But it was obvious how difficult it was for you. I really admire your strength to see it through to the end. I first herd this in January and it still gives me chills. What Ren does though is to take these extremely painful things and hold them up in the stark light of day without glorifying the violence or disrespecting anyone who has experienced that in their life and in doing so he makes us all face the darkness in our modern society. Thank you so much for making this video. Especially given how much it must have cost you emotionally not just to see it through but to edit the whole thing too. I wish you peace and happiness. I am obsessed with Ren reactions, so I have seen a ton of these. Your reactions are always the most insightful and powerful. You always notice far more details than anyone else, and that includes several professional rappers and musicians. You feel things on a much deeper level than anyone else. I have found that the most creative artists (such as Ren) and deep insightful thinkers/feelers (such as yourself), are those who have suffered with mental and physical health issues. I think there is something that allows them to connect with the deeper parts of our humanity. It brings to mind one of the final lines, "A tragedy, or miracle." I think it can be helpful to focus on the "miracle" side of this duality.

A little detail about the seed of inspiration which this trilogy came from. Apparently, the characters of Jenny and Screech are based on a real encounter. A 14 year old street walker attacked and killed by another 14 year old. In the press conference, the hardened and jaded police officer, replying to a journalist highlighting their young ages simply remarked "Yeah, its such a shame". The twists, turns and the tragic character of Violet are from Ren's own dark, cinematic imagination.

Your enthusiasm is infectious. At one point I said (to the dog) that I'd love to go to a gig with you just to watch your joy, it's so wholesome. Your pain is also very visceral, and I'm sorry that this subject matter is so impactful. These songs are such a good illustration of generational trauma, violet's mum is a drinker for a reason and something dark lives in her father, forward to violet's almost passive role in her own story, her body's fight flight or freeze response being silent and frozen, and forward to the lives and fate of her offspring. I also believe in some events/acts being communal and global traumas, like war and violent weather, but also in behaviours described throughout this story. Domestic abuse is so damaging that it has an impact on us all. Thank you for another thoughtful reaction, please take care and hold yourself in compassion x

I’m so glad you were able to catch the moments of just joy and awe when watching Ren nail the execution of this masterpiece. My entire life, I’ve dealt with assorted people telling me to “tone it down” because they assume my emotional reactions are “put on” or otherwise not real, so it’s surreal to me that there are people who not only don’t say those things, but who are able to connect with, and enjoy, the emotion coming through the screen. As I’ve mentioned a couple times in videos, I’m notoriously bad at faking any kind of emotion, so anything I share here is 100% the same reaction I’d have if listening to things on my own, without a camera.
And I’m also glad the duality/coexistence of the pain and joy is apparent; I do my best to embrace the whole spectrum of emotion, and acknowledge when things are painful, but also when the joy is present. I have a feeling we’d enjoy going to a gig together (say hi to your dog for me!😊).
These songs really are such a masterpiece, and the layers and parallels woven throughout are nothing short of jaw-dropping. I’m so thankful to Ren for creating such an important, helpful, tragically beautiful work of art.🩷
I can totally hear the seagulls now that I went back to listen to that section, but it definitely duped me the first time!

There is a small bit at the beginning of Screech’s tale that sounds like either another Christmas carol or a piece of music I either heard or performed years ago that was part of a madrigal. I’m sure I spelled that wrong but it’s a memory that’s at least 40 yrs old and pre-traumatic brain injuries. I started collecting them at 26 and even the drs can’t give me an exact number just that it is somewhere between 7 and 15. Used to have a photographic memory but lost that after my second concussion in 3 months or at least that is the neurologists best guess. I got whiplash in an earthquake 3 months before I was in a car accident. My losses were more severe than what they should have been after the car accident. Had to relearn how to read, can remember the fingerings for several instruments but not what note is what fingering, had to relearn how to read music, fell off chairs because my balance was so bad, didn’t recognize my roommate, couldn’t find my way from my dorm room to the bathroom, cafeteria, class pretty much anyplace and loss my ability to recognize faces. I was in grad school. I tend to recognize people by their voice as opposed to their appearance. My roomie used to wear bright red or yellow when we went out because then if we got separated I only had to study the people wearing those two colors to locate her. Unfortunately I still have trouble finding people if we get separated. They all know to go to the book section if we get separated because that is one place I always check out and will head to if we get separated. Barnes and Nobles they head to the magazines. I’ve had to create a bunch of compensatory strategies because I had no rehab or outside help the first 15 yrs. Training as a special Ed teacher was helpful because I’ve created most of my own rehab. Unfortunately, trying to get help with the mental and emotional issues from both that and my childhood and teen years got me labeled with disorders I didn’t have and put on meds I didn’t need. I’ve actually developed agoraphobia because of the treatment I received from one psychiatrist. He was trying to reduce my anxiety; that was a fail. At one point when seeing that dr I was on 15 prescriptions a day plus my asthma and allergy meds. Only good thing to come out of that mess was I was able to work through most of my trauma issues and rarely have flashbacks or dissociative episodes anymore.

Great reaction Becca. This was actually on the news years ago. He brings abuse awareness of something that has unfortunately on some level been socially accepted although it's a subject most pretend to ignore or doesn't happen. He is addressing it. Props to him and you for seeing it. This was a story showing the cycle of abuse, beginning with their mother who was abused by her father and partner who actually killed her. father went to prison. The doctors couldn't save Violet but saved her babies. They fell into the system, meaning jenny and james (screech) were separated. Jenny was like her mother, James like his father. James was shot down after slitting her throat from a mugging. As twins, those kids died at 14-yrs old. That feeling she had making her scared- ironically, she was feeling danger and sensing her twin brother.
And- Patrick wasn't answering the door because he was cheating on james with his gf.

Wow!! This comment blew my mind. Of all the comments to the different reaction videos to this trilogy, this is the first time I've seen anyone mention that Jenny may have felt her twin's presence. We all know that twins often experience the world as a cohesive and singular unit. Even though Jenny wasn't even aware that she had a twin, her psyche probably DID know, and sensed that he was close by.

Amazing reaction and in depth breakdown. Something that really caught me in the Tale of Screech I thought I'd share, especially with your connection between the banshee sound of the sirens and Screech's own name...Banshees are part of mythology originating in the UK, as in "sirens like a banshee in the night"...and in that mythology Banshees were omens of Death and Despair. In the tales, hearing the screech or wail of a banshee meant someone was going to die.

Violet's tale takes place in 2005 (two zero zero five).....Jenny and Screech's tale takes place in 2019 when he taped them......we hear Screech is 14 years old (2019-14 = 2005). As Violet died and Stevie probably went to prison for killing her, Jenny and Screech ended up in "the System", more than likely separated (and never knew about their twin).
What's haunting, now that we KNOW they are 14 years old, is that a 14-year-old is wearing High Heel shoes....WHY? (people have their suspicions) Jenny has walked those streets about 1000 times before.....Hmmmmm. We know Screech probably didn't grow up in the best of circumstances.....but could the same be said about Jenny?
Why/How was Violet able to move out and into "Government housing" (a Council Flat) at age 16? Was she already pregnant? Is that why Stevie got mad at her? Because he thought she cheated on him? If she was pregnant at 16, who got her pregnant?
Stevie (Violet's Beau) got MAD at Violet when she didn't respond to him......Just like Screech got MAD at Jenny when she didn't respond. Jenny was quiet and submissive when faced with danger/aggression, just like Violet was quiet and submissive when faced with danger/aggression.

It took him awhile to write a follow-up that fit and it's likely that the idea to have a twist wasn't present when the first two were written but he does a wonderful job of making it all feel cohesive, except of course originally alluding to Jenny being an adult woman and not a child. I know I just replied on your other comment, but wanted to at least come here and add that, again, it makes my heart smile to know someone is able to get something from what I’m able to share. I love digging into the analysis (which is why this is basically an hour long😬), and he really pulled no punches here-the storytelling, subject matter in all three tales, his ability to act with his body, face, and voice, and his use of whatever space he’s in at any given point…my gosh, it’s a masterpiece.

Absolutely another masterpiece of a work of art from Ren.🩷

When Ren wrote this he was inspired by a news paper article about a murder in Sussex gardens Paddington. Where a young sex worker was robbed and killed by a 14 year old who later the same night was shot by police. So Jenny was a sex worker. In the article little is actually written about “Jenny” and more about the “Screech” character, hence we don’t get much background in the song. Since these part were all written at different times I am not sure if they were meant to be twins from the start.
But he wrote the tale of Violet to discuss generation trauma and violence.
The fact is we leave Screech’s tale thinking we know Screech but Violets tale allows us to realize he is also a victim. A victim of violence and a victim of a failed system. Jenny is a victim of the same system. The reason Screech doesn’t get far is that he is 14 his world and support system and contacts are small and local.
Violet lets us see the same spiral and same repeated failings - the staircase helps represent the continued spiral of violence and trauma. When Violet dies her trauma passes on.
Many people point out that Jenny is like Violet - silent and still whilst Screech is like Stevie demonstrative, aggressive and violent. But is this nature or nurture. Many boys are taught not to express softer emotions and instead express only anger, aggression and violence whilst girls are taught to be quiet and be smaller than they are and hope it passes. Most likely Stevie was a product of a violent household too and these patterns keep repeating. Both Screech and Jenny lacked positive supportive role models to break the cycle.
    Truly sad tale

Every time I listen to these tracks from Ren I think if Medieval Minstrals. No 'production' just a man with his instrument and voice telling a story. Love it. Even some of the melodies, especially the intros have that 'medieval' origins sound to them. The instrument telling the story not just the lyrics.
The "She never ever stood a chance" part, or rather Rens delivery of it reminded me of a Beatles Track though cant recall specifically which one. I thinks is on the Sargent Pepper album. Even the words were very similar if not identical. If im right Ren did it deliberately im sure and I wonder what it means?
The whole thing recalled to me one of my most fave Musicals - Blood Brothers. A story with a musical Narrator; a deal with the Devil and about Twins. Ren is phenomenal.

Sending love and hugs (only if wanted) across the miles. I appreciate you taking time to share all this here. Ren definitely gave us something special with this one, and it’s very much a type of catharsis that’s hard to find elsewhere. I’m glad it’s been able to be that for you, too. And I’m thankful you liked this reaction.🩷
