  • What is heart rate variability? how does it relate to stress, depression, and anxiety? This video answers these questions, and more.
I first define heart rate variability (HRV). Understanding the purpose of HRV allows us to better tailor or needs for stress management. After showing the purpose of tracking HRV, I share the app I have been using to do so, HRV4Training.
Check back next week after this posting date for How to Improve Heart Rate Variability.

So to be clear, the more my heart rate changes, the better? I have a pulse oximeter, and I used to worry that my heart rate always fluctuated when I breathed in and out, or would bounce around between 70-80 seemingly randomly at rest.

Hey Chris! My name is Nicholas and I’m 19, I was diagnosed with anxiety after my first few panic attacks back in May of 2020 that I’ve never had before ever. Over the months that has passed, I’ve had panic attacks but not as much, The anxiety bothers me everyday some less than most. Now on my Apple Watch I check my variability everyday and it’s been at a constant 29, I’m not sure if they are accurate or not, but should I be worried?

As a medical student I still cant get this concept. I learned that if the space between a beat and another variates Is too much, then you could have an arrhytmia! I am quite confused

Gianfranco W I haven’t studied this greatly but I believe this variation in inter beat intervals is too small to be confused with an arrhythmia. You can feel an arrhythmia by checking someone’s pulse and clearly feel the variations in beat length. With heart rate variability the beats will feel normal. It’s variability between those normal beats that determine heart rate variability.

What is a normal range? I’ve been monitoring this on my watch since January and I only average 17. I have Sarcoidosis in my lungs and it can affect the heart. My resting pulse during the day is usually 90 to 100 and that’s with taking a beta blocker. My cardiologist doesn’t seem concerned about the Heart rate but I haven’t seen him since checking the variability.

Rob Stewart good question! I checked this morning and had 26. This is the first time I tried it and I know I'll have to do it over a period of time - but would be good to know if it was high or low for my age, weight etc.

Heart rate can be changed by a myriad of ways. Talking, walking, getting excited, scared, even breathing in. What he was talking about is He is talking about Heart Rate Variability. That is how consistent is the time between two beats. You heart usually adapts to your surrounding all the time (bc of oxygen levels, co2 levels, BP, etc) so the variability is usually high. When you have anxiety or depression or some kind of damage to the Nervous system, the brain cant adapt as well, which leads to a decrease in HRV. That's why new research has focused on finding a relationship between this drop in variability and the individual's health. So your heart rate alone doesnt really tell you anything about your anxiety /depression status. Though it could refelct acute changes, such as a faster heart rate if you are angry. But not the overall status of your condition. At least not by itself.

Angel Levin measure it multiple times in different states - ie sitting down, lying down, meditating - you might have measured it when you were stressed or excited, etc. of course checking for biological issues with a doctor should probably be done first depending on severity of depression (and if it is true depression and not just poor mood) but then also exercise, read about principles of happiness, meditate, spend time with friends and close relatives for enough social interaction, set achievable goals and do meaningful stuff to help others and you will most likely be fine (again, of course unless there is some biological condition - but even then these activities will still help a lot). You look like a young beautiful girl - do the things above and you will most likely be fine :) also, get Miracle Morning book (it helped me a lot) and have consistent wake up and bed times.
