  • “Brexit’s happened, the referendum has happened and the government can’t make it work.”
The suggestion that Britain could have moved ahead more quickly with the Covid vaccination having not been in the EU is “a lie” says John McTernan.

Opinion on the EU was always a major fault line in the party. It took strong leadership to hold it together. Then Cameron happened. Then austerity happened causing the rise of demagogues. Then we had a wretched referendum campaign with neither side behaving remotely well and failing to describe the pros and cons. Then there was no plan.

I see none of that, myself at least. Granted, my POV is limited, living where I’m at. But the EU, as the world, is closely intertwined with laws and regulations on food and so forward. The only thing that I’ve seen with Britain is higher and denser walls. We hear less and less about their (your?) politics even - because now it’s become an even more personal thing that’s exclusive to Britain and not our neighbour anymore. It’s more of a “they do their thing” now - we’re not involved because they cut it off. Purposely.

A recent blog by Prof Chris Grey the UK's top academic trade expert on the EU (according to The Economist and the FT) looked in detail at the issue of regulatory divergence from the EU which is very dear to Brexiters and he points out that:
"Not only can we not afford to diverge, we cannot afford not to follow"
    and further
"In short, leaving the single market makes regulatory alignment expensive, but regulatory divergence is even more expensive. So we pay for the price of a freedom we cannot afford to exercise, and Brexiters call this sovereignty."
Brexit always was a delusion. As the very astute Irish journalist and observer of the UK, Finton O'Toole, has noted about Brexit “You had imaginary oppression, now you've got imaginary freedom.”
