  • I found a brackish pond and decided to make a temporary native brackish aquarium. It contains a lot of life. Sticklebacks, but also other organisms.
    Enjoy!.

    I have always loved having Aquariums and a few years back I bought a 29 gal tank at a garage sale, well even though I hadn’t kept fish for a long long time I ended up buying more and more tanks so I could have, you guessed it, more fish lol. Anyways 2 of my tanks I decided to try doing them brackish and just kind of winged it. I guess my wings worked good as I had my brackish fish for a number of years. One tank was 2green spotted puffers, 1 moray eel (can’t remember the type) I loved that tank and at one point I put a live oyster in it and it lived for almost a year. It was suppose to be food for the puffers but I realized after I bought it the size was way to big for them. My other brackish tank housed 2 violet gobies and 2 mud skippers, they are so fun to watch 🙂

    Great stuff! I too used to go and get stuff from lakes and the sea and put whatever into aquariums to observe.
    My favourite experience was with common beach crabs. I'd catch them as tiny creatures only a few mm in size, and keep them and let them grow up in a tank overgrown with caulerpa (from tiny things a few mm across to 20-30 cm diameter on the shell), and hand feed them every day. As they grew accustomed, as soon as I entered the room they'd storm out and get ready to climb up my hand when I stuck it in the tank and climb up onto my shoulder to be fed whilst sitting on my shoulder. Almost felt like feeding parakeets or something...

    • @cornpie9755
      @cornpie9755 Před 5 lety +2

      Even with a whole course on them we never went past the family level.
      It is expected that I can identify aquatic macroinvertebrates to the order level on site. Without a shadow of a doubt, it is order diptera making it a true fly.
      To give you an idea of how diverse they are, here is a dichotomous key that I use:
      www.zoology.ubc.ca/bcdiptera/Order%20Diptera%20Text%20Files/key_1_to_7.htm
      Looking at images for diptera is easier:
      www.researchgate.net/figure/a-Larval-morphology-of-the-different-Diptera-families-adapted-from-Chu-and-Cutkomp_fig4_226782686
      After doing this, I am confident that it is a chironomid (midge) larvae. Not the one with the retractable head though. The stick worms are.

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 Před 5 lety +1

      I think most of those have larva with a shelled head. I have no idea what kind of larva that is, but I think the head is the part that needs to be used for identification. I am thinking it is a fly larva though, because of the retractable head.

    • @cornpie9755
      @cornpie9755 Před 5 lety +1

      @@rich1051414 That armored segment is called a sclerotized plate. The number of plates is sometimes used to identify them. Diptera can have between 1 and 3 of them.
      But you are also correct. It is a fly that's what the order diptera is.
      The retractable head is very seldom seen among diptera. This makes it easy to identify as a crane fly larvae (family tipulidae). They have over 15,000 species.

    The little fish are coming up to the surface to gulp down air. It means the water in the tank is oxygen depleted, you should get some air stones to incorporate bubbles in the water

      I love how your accent doesn't show as long as you speak English (at least not to me) - but becomes undeniably Dutch when you say the Latin names :-)

    Not certain but I think the "cloudiness" is millions of water bears. One of my jars wasn't doing much of anything at a time so I put some moss pieces in it and the cloudiness happened. That's the only thing I could come up with.
    Both of my jars have been sealed for at least 4 years now in mostly darkness but now that the summer is here, weird things are starting to happen.
