- I found a brackish pond and decided to make a temporary native brackish aquarium. It contains a lot of life. Sticklebacks, but also other organisms.
Enjoy!.

Someone get this man a damn microscope!
Bardelyx he has one
So why is he asking for another one?

you maybe. begging for a microscope
After being returned, When telling the other fish, The transpanted fish probably sounded like they were abducted by aliens.
Poor things
So right!!
No one will believe them.
Lol
I'm really glad you took them back where they can survive :)

Thank you

I love how you observed them for a time. Then put them back; all things great and small. Subscribed!
Yeah I love to do that. It's something a lot of people don't consider as an option.

I hear you, it is exactly why I also just hit the subscribe button.

Very cool

I read that right when he said it xD lol
Aww, look at you getting your little waters and riding your bike. Makin’ jokes, getting excited about your findings, so cute. He really grr’ed at the fishes, precious
Do we want to talk about how you probably ate some of those tiny specks when you did your taste taste?
The Lonely Rogue gosh I can't even imagine how many microorganisms I accidentally swallowed during beach trips 😭😭
@@negomyan 🤢
@@negomyan lmfao the bad news is each beach trip you would have ingested hundreds of thousands of microorganisms. The good news is that few of them are any harm to us.
@@negomyan remember that time you did it on purpose?

I have always loved having Aquariums and a few years back I bought a 29 gal tank at a garage sale, well even though I hadn’t kept fish for a long long time I ended up buying more and more tanks so I could have, you guessed it, more fish lol. Anyways 2 of my tanks I decided to try doing them brackish and just kind of winged it. I guess my wings worked good as I had my brackish fish for a number of years. One tank was 2green spotted puffers, 1 moray eel (can’t remember the type) I loved that tank and at one point I put a live oyster in it and it lived for almost a year. It was suppose to be food for the puffers but I realized after I bought it the size was way to big for them. My other brackish tank housed 2 violet gobies and 2 mud skippers, they are so fun to watch 🙂
You are a awesome natural scientist thank you for sharing part of your life
Thank you for watching!
I love your background music, it's very fitting.
Thank you I really try my best
It gives him a Mr. Rogers vibe. He's educational and fun.
Actually I was thinking more of a porno vibe.
@@david2869 yes. Exactly. Very fitting.
your humour and personality are great, not sure why you don't have more subs but i suspect you're about to get super, super popular
love how relaxing your vids are, keep up the hard work :D

Shaggy Boombastic I agree. It’s nice to listen to a mellow narrator every now and then

Morgan Hackworth me too......
That patreon plug tho 😂
Honestly he has to be the most honest youtuber I've ever seen
One of my favorite qualities in your work is the fact that almost every creature you film looks like they are dumb AF. I say that with the utmost love and respect. Thank you for providing dope content young one!
Great stuff! I too used to go and get stuff from lakes and the sea and put whatever into aquariums to observe.
My favourite experience was with common beach crabs. I'd catch them as tiny creatures only a few mm in size, and keep them and let them grow up in a tank overgrown with caulerpa (from tiny things a few mm across to 20-30 cm diameter on the shell), and hand feed them every day. As they grew accustomed, as soon as I entered the room they'd storm out and get ready to climb up my hand when I stuck it in the tank and climb up onto my shoulder to be fed whilst sitting on my shoulder. Almost felt like feeding parakeets or something...
The background music & this video & your voice & life in the tank or jar is so relaxing, the music reminds me of Charlie Brown
Glad to be a Patreon now! Love all your work, keep it up!
I just saw it. Thank you very much for your support!
The mini creatures are infusoria. A mixture of micro crustaceans, single celled organisms, and single celled algae.
Thanks for this insightful info! Paramecium are part of infusoria so I was kind of right...
@@LifeinJars No you could be right, "infusoria" isn't an organism and doesn't even describe anything, it's just a term people use for small things they can't identify.
Dude, I just started my own ecosystem in a jar a couple of weeks ago cause you inspired me. Eventhough I took water from an eutrophic pond, the water is full of life and I added some mossballs to help a bit.
12 years ago I had a 2m aquarium with a dutch habitat with eels native fish and wooly hand crabs.
the crabs were good at escaping but after building a ramp at the side I found that escapees would return to the water I think they forage on land during summer nights but go back in the morning.
That is really really cool.
Life in Jars guy, you crack me up....I burst out laughing....you make me happy n smile x
It's been a while since the last vid! The video wasn't posted late at night for once lmao.
It was nice.
Yeah haha. This video could have been done earlier if it weren't for my laptop not being powerful enough to edit.
Yea, time zones...
The presence of Sticklebacks implies a good environmental quality! Where I live are almost extinct...😢 Compliments for your videos, they show us the importance of preserving nature in its entireness!
Wait, 7:37 wasn't a skyline?! It looks like a view of the ocean with a reflection of a cloud in the water. Incredible!
Yeah I only saw that when you pointed it out in the poll. Doesn't change how I'm using your advice though.
@@LifeinJars It was compositionally a super nice shot :) very beautiful!
The music is so calming I fell asleep the first time I watched this.
Well that's something :)
I just woke back up. It's very calming, peaceful voice and music.
We have little sticklebacks in our freshwater streams here, they are such interesting little guys, building their little cave nests. I've never tried keeping any though I've always wanted to. I always find them in cold and highly oxygenated water, so assumed they wouldn't last in an aquarium. I think we have 4 and 5 spine stickles...
Goodbye, little fishies. ;-(
Started my first Ecosphere bc of you! So much life!
I have recently come to believe that this is the best channel on all of CZcams.
I once saw a water scorpion in the ocean and it was fine. As well as backswimmers in a tide pool. Pretty cool seeing they could survive in sea water.
your newest video got picked for the algorithm. i hope it gets you some ad revenue and more patrons. get that damn microscope!
Your personality and jokes are so funny, and these videos are very entertaining. Thankyou for filming these :)
this is actually great original content on youtube whaaat?
Love watching your videos and hearing your views on the microscopic World. Love your humor
I love that you returned the fish! I love your little studies.
I am glad that I am not the only one who tastes pond water to find out the salinity.
6:01 *Childhood memories coming like the ones from Vietnam*
Hilarious commentary. Extremely dry humor. Very entertaining videos. Thanks.
You should get a filter, it'll help aerate the water and clear up the cloudiness. Only change out water from your tank with water from your pond. Also, if you see any native aquatic plants, it'd be cool to throw them in there
Yeah that's true but it was a one week set-up
Im assuming you didn't get the whole point of this video
That first larva is probably a type of chironomid!
I agree. I took an aquatic macro invertebrate ID course and even my prof had trouble identifying diptera to the family level.
They are just too diverse.
They are a lot of diffrrent species but that might be true
Even with a whole course on them we never went past the family level.
It is expected that I can identify aquatic macroinvertebrates to the order level on site. Without a shadow of a doubt, it is order diptera making it a true fly.
To give you an idea of how diverse they are, here is a dichotomous key that I use:
www.zoology.ubc.ca/bcdiptera/Order%20Diptera%20Text%20Files/key_1_to_7.htm
Looking at images for diptera is easier:
www.researchgate.net/figure/a-Larval-morphology-of-the-different-Diptera-families-adapted-from-Chu-and-Cutkomp_fig4_226782686
After doing this, I am confident that it is a chironomid (midge) larvae. Not the one with the retractable head though. The stick worms are.
I think most of those have larva with a shelled head. I have no idea what kind of larva that is, but I think the head is the part that needs to be used for identification. I am thinking it is a fly larva though, because of the retractable head.
@@rich1051414 That armored segment is called a sclerotized plate. The number of plates is sometimes used to identify them. Diptera can have between 1 and 3 of them.
But you are also correct. It is a fly that's what the order diptera is.
The retractable head is very seldom seen among diptera. This makes it easy to identify as a crane fly larvae (family tipulidae). They have over 15,000 species.
I also did this jar life before to save a part of my fresh water tank which was destroyed by earthquake.. apparently cannot take in my co² it did not last long and my RCS dead. Thanks for this video :)
I've only recently found this channel but man I love your personality, it's interesting to watch your videos and yet I'm still entertained throughout
What would happen if you mix two very different ecospheres..?
user255 death
@@l00tgoblin37
Surely, but all of them? No harmony or symbiosis at all?
user255 I was half joking half truth, I guess it depends on what two ecospheres are being mixed, probably a salt water and fresh water would probably not turn out so well but two fresh or two salt, some interesting things might happen
Really love his content and the relaxing music background
I would describe your humor as "wholesomely funny". Very enjoyable
These videos are WONDERFUL ❤️!!!! I like seeing all the little things in the water, watching them grow and especially hearing your voice and your narration is hilarious. Love it! 💯
I suggest setting up your tank with an under gavel filter. It will suck the the cloudiness out of the water fairly quickly so you (and we) you can enjoy viewing your fish more.
as someone who keeps animals and cares very deeply for all life (bugs included) i usually don’t agree with taking life from the wild. however, you released them back and i respect that. thank you. :)
love that u replanted the grass
I made the mistake of drinking ginger ale while watching this...

I really like that you returned the fish man. A+ move.
Of course!
I used to keep aquariums before moving cross country, this seems just as fun, and costs less....ALOT LESS!!
About 4:20 in is the greatest Patreon plug I've ever seen.
Wait. So you can just gather up a bunch of pond muck and fricking FISH might appear?! This channel is absolutely fascinating!
I imagine the sticklebacks trying to tell their mates about their journey, and being called alien nuts 😆
please use miscroscope so that we can see clearly all those tiny things
Hey I know that invasive grass as I live in Perth west Australia and yes it’s planted along the beach dunes amongst other coastal plants, hope they don’t use it any,ore when restoring dune flora.
I’d luv to come for a holiday n hang out collecting stuff n listening to you play guitar, I can see really well 😁...how cool is THAT! he he
Yeah I sure hope they stopped using it. Funny that you saw it as well.
@@LifeinJars Funny how I just read ur rey and turned the TV on to see "Escape from the Country" show on with a guy moving from *Netherlands* to the UK.. Lol
Dankjewel!
I follow a lot of unusual creators on YT but this one takes the cake. Nonetheless I fell over myself racing to the couch to watch this on the TV. Scared the utter shit out of my dogs who were chilling on the route. Cool info about Marram Grass! I remember planting it in the dunes on our holiday property in South Western Australia and had no idea it was introduced. Great content! Thanks so much and keep it up!
Haha poor doggo's. Well it makes me happy that you're enjoying the videos!

I hope so too! Thanks
A little late. This is the first video of yours I have ever seen and I'm in love! Going to watch more. What an interesting hobby!
Thanks for watching. I'm glad I have been able to interest you in a new hobby
The little fish are coming up to the surface to gulp down air. It means the water in the tank is oxygen depleted, you should get some air stones to incorporate bubbles in the water
this guy is such a lad
How did the stickle backs get there bc it couldn't have been eggs the day before
Kids these days will never remember the trauma inflicted by the baracuda scene.

Idk if im just quite new or is this video packed with jokes, i living for it xD
Yes you are!

Welcome:)
I knew you were dutch
Mooie vid
I love how your accent doesn't show as long as you speak English (at least not to me) - but becomes undeniably Dutch when you say the Latin names :-)
Atomic Shrimp sent me here and I'm glad he did.
This is so cool :O I didn't even know how full of life is in the water alone lol
Not certain but I think the "cloudiness" is millions of water bears. One of my jars wasn't doing much of anything at a time so I put some moss pieces in it and the cloudiness happened. That's the only thing I could come up with.
Both of my jars have been sealed for at least 4 years now in mostly darkness but now that the summer is here, weird things are starting to happen.
Always a joy to watch and listen. Thanks for sharing your experiments, knowledge and humor! Also, do you have a particular microscope in mind yet?
this guy livin on the edge taste testing random stagnant water.
For those fish, it must have been like being abducted by aliens. I bet their buddies back at the pond don't believe them.
your so wholesome it hurts
