  • The new axial/radial main air compressor AR-MAX1 incorporates the benefits of proven industrial design and gas turbine technology and forms part of the AIRMAX train, one of MAN’s leading solutions for air separation units (ASU). The first of 19 AIRMAX trains that have been sold within three years, marks the beginning of the success story. After being engineered, manufactured, assembled and tested in our Oberhausen workshop in Germany, the AR-MAX1 serial number 001 starts its journey overseas to be finally installed and commissioned on site.

    Without any explanation one could think it is normal that the compressor surges so often, this was only done to show that this compressor can withstand many surges without beeing damaged. Most other axial compressors would have been destroyed by the shown surges. In normal operation the surges are prevented by an anti surge control.

    @ 15:15 to 15:35 you can hear the compressor undergoing surge testing. That is the compressor blades undergo a compression stall as the space behind the blade forms a vacuum causing a sudden reverse load on the blades. This is caused when the blade spins too fast and pressure waves trail off the blades and overlap the leading edge of the next compressor blade. At this point the next disk of blades have no air to bite into and start trying to drag the front disk of blades back. The compressor stall is not uniform in load across the compressor face but strongly asymmetrical. This can cause the main armature to wobble and half the turbine blades to pull towards the front stator blades. In extreme cases these blades do collide with the stator blades with very catastrophic and explosive effect.

      Those bursts of sound are from the effects of surging. Due to the relationship of mass flow parememter and pressure ratio.

    • @MAN-Energy-Solutions
      @MAN-Energy-Solutions  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Our maximum temperature for AG/AR in operation is currently 320°C. For high-temperature applications, we split the pressure build-up between two compressors. First machine AG/AR for large volume flows and high efficiency plus second machine RG integrally geared compressor for max. temperature where the materials can be changed individually.

    So how far out is a part when it breaks 6 months? Very strange using a machine that big since there probably is no way to back it up. Multi staging with multiple units just seems smarter. Awesome machine though and I assume it’s production based.

    • @johnsawyer2516
      @johnsawyer2516 Před 6 lety

      Multiple units working in parallel or series can be difficult to control due to one or more surging. It can be done with modern controls systems but is not so energy efficient. Hence one big machine.
