Homesteading with children sounds extremely difficult, especially for large families or those with younger children. The truth is, by teaching our children traditional skills at a young age, they'll become contributing members of and huge assets to the family as they get older. Let's discuss how to involve children on the homestead so that they learn to love it.

This gave me such hope for the future of our children. I remember saying to my son, be a gentleman because there aren't many left in the world. To this day, he holds open doors, helps carry packages, and I also taught him to bake bread. He's a wonderful young man.

My kids are all grown. All I can say is I really could have benefited from this video years ago. Even if one does not homestead, these are great tips.
I remember my mom always criticized my work, which turned me against housework. I loved doing outside work - one cause I loved being outside, but that my dad always made me feel appreciated and would take the time to show me how to do something right if I did it wrong. Over the years, my mom got better about not always criticizing all the work. I also realized it was how they were brought up.
I told my kids a thank you goes a lot further than criticism.

When I was a child, before we had a refrigerator, we had what was called a 'meat safe'; which was a metal box with screened sides, for airflow. Something like that would work for drying meat, or even a mosquito net type set up.

So I'm thinking next year she'll be ready to have her own small space to grow her own goodies ❤️

This is so refreshing! As someone who is the oldest of 10 children, and also homeschooled, thank you for showing how you emphasize your children's individuality within the family. My identity was tied up for so long as "1 of 10". Individuality was not really recognized growing up, but it is so important. Thank you. I am now a parent myself, and I feel like this is advice that I can I actually take to heart and use.

We have a freeze dryer. We live in Arizona so it's very hot here to begin with but we do have air conditioning. In the winter we keep our fees dryer in the garage and that is fine. In the summer we have to bring it inside but even with the air-conditioning we get an error message that says the room is too hot. We started putting a fan on the left-hand side of the freeze dryer and although it's still says that the room is too warm we're no longer having problems with the batches finishing. Do not put the fan on the right-hand side of the freeze dryer because that's where the warm air is expelled from the freeze dryer if you put a fan on that side you're going to push that hot-air back into the freeze dryer

I have enjoyed encouraging our granddaughter in her interest in growing a garden. When here one day late spring, she went home with a couple of plant starts and some seeds. She just this week actually was able to harvest some lettuce and she was tickled about it as was her mom. My heart was full at her excitement and joy at actually growing something that can be eaten.
On a side note…I have noticed your mugs and I absolutely love their size etc. I’m wondering if you mind sharing where they came from?

Thank you for this video! It was so encouraging and great reminders of things we should/could be doing with our kids regularly.
I have been struggling the past 2+ years with feeling like I was failing my kids because life got crazy. We purchased property, built a house and moved. The kids did not get the attention they needed during that time and some things, like homeschool, didn't get the organization and time it should have had.
My goal is to revamp things and work on more organization this year but also work on character building.
I loved the ideas you shared and will be watching this video again so I can take notes 😊 Thank you also for saying where your hope comes from. Jesus is so important to keep as the foundation of the family.

Just a clarification on the sugar question: depending on the recipe, sugar and salt can add a safety element to canning. The safety element is called water activity. All bacteria, molds, etc require available fresh water to grow and reproduce. Adding sugar and/or salt reduces the amount of fresh water available to any nasties. This is why honey has an indefinite shelf life. It is so packed with sugars that bacteria can't use any of the water. Please be cautious about modifying canning recipes. The USDA and county extension offices have resources to assist with home canning. They may be able to guide you when recipes can be altered.

When you described the difference between happiness (external, circumstantial) and joy (inner, satisfying) it occurred to me that while Joy is fruit of the Spirit, happiness is fruit of the soul. And like all soulish things, is temporal while things of the Spirit are eternal.
Also, regarding the question, I just bought my first freeze dryer and have it in my Central NY unfinished basement which also houses all my canned goods and curing produce like potatoes, squash and cabbages. I wasnt prepared for the drastic temperature rise where I would prefer it to remain cool. I bought a very inexpensive personal sized Evaporative Air Cooler, aka Swamp Cooler. A portable window A/C was not an option, but I discovered these small evaporative coolers that run on a USB cable and blow air from a fan across a felt element that is saturated with cold water. You can even freeze it first for an even colder blast. Bigger swamp coolers are available that would probably be needed for rooms that house multiple freeze dryers, but this small one works great to lower my basement temp enough to get longer storage for my vegetables.
