  • UPDATE: The US has increased the price of an ESTA from $14 to $21.
    UPDATE: You are now required to upload a photo of your passport. (This may be easier on your phone).
    I hope this step by step guide can help you to successfully complete the ESTA form. This is needed for entry into the US by tourists from many countries. I got approved within 3 hours of paying. Hope this can help.

    In my case, I got the authorization in around 10 hours, so I'm quite glad.
    A few things to note, as OP mentioned at the beginning regarding Chrome browser. This happened with me and I couldn't go into the pay section, so I had to phone them up and ask. They said the site deletes cache every 4 hours, so you can log back in using your D.O.B, passport number etc after a few hours to complete and pay. Also be aware, according to their own site you are almost guaranteed to get rejected if you put "Yes" on any of the questions at the end. Another thing, unlike me, you should probably send all this off and get approved before you book tickets to the U.S.A. would hate to lose out of tickets and hotel fees because of a rejection at this stage.

What if the esta application is not approved and I've already book the hotel?
    Also once the esta is approved, can I print it out on a hardcopy as a document to show the customs officer for admission to the US?

    You explained very clearly how to complete the ESTA form but when I tried it in August 2023 I could not even complete the first page without being instructed to upload my passport. This involved holding my passport page inside a window on my MacBook screen, but when I did this nothing happened. It looks as if something has changed since you wrote your guide and now you need to do something really tricky - do a video on how to upload a passport that can be followed by any old person who might wish to holiday in USA.

      I had similar problem with a laptop webcam so this is what I did. Put passport on a table & held down edges with blu tack so it was flat. Then took photos of the passport with Iphone set to 10 seconds timer. This gives you time to frame the photo how you want. After that I copied the photos from the iPhone onto my Windows 11 laptop. Then used the Microsoft Photos app to straighten, crop, boost contrast and brightness of the photo. Saved the edited photo. (Probably same with Windows 10) Went back to the ESTA upload passport page & selected the photo. It was accepted immediately with all fields populated. I used the Firefox browser btw. So, hope this might help you & maybe some others. After I had paid my ESTA came through in about 1 hour😀📱💻

    1) I'm applying for a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 youth. Can i use one email for all four applications? It's just makes life a but easier
    2) my wife was born in India but is now a naturalised Brit. In previous nationality I guess she'd put Indian? She is not a dual national.
    3) is the ESTA a separate document. Or it something that is stamped in the UK passport?
    Thanks in advance

      Hello, since it is a Portuguese passport I believe you can obtain an ESTA. You cant get a visa on arrival. This link says you are eligible if you "Have a valid passport lawfully issued to you by a Visa Waiver Program country". Which would be Portugal. - esta.cbp.dhs.gov/faq?lang=en&focusedTopic=About%20ESTA%20and%20The%20Visa%20Waiver%20Program&answerToDisplay=Who%20is%20eligible%20to%20submit%20an%20application

    Cuba has now been added to the list of countries they ask if you have visited. It will be a problem if you have been to Cuba on or after January 2021. I was there in 2020 and got an "approved" ESTA application. But as usual, that does not guarantee entry into the US on the day of travel. Fingers crossed though! Note: Do not lite on the form! They can check where you have travelled even if you have no stamp on your passport, countries share information on citizen travels as your passport is always scanned. Lying will definitely disqualify you for life from an ESTA.

    Worst stressful experience filling out this new-fangled form! Because their system won't let you type in lower case, yahoo will not accept the email entry needed to get a security code. I had to change my browser from safari to firefox, and use another e-mail address! Instead of the 20-30 minute time with the old form, this new one took 2 days, with 2 phone calls to their "help" desk, which yielded nothing. Even their online complaint form doesn't work either! I then phoned apple support which was really good. This new system is a time waster!

      Hello, when I completed it, it was optional. By uploading your passport it fills in the information for you. However, if you choose not to then you just have to enter the information yourself. This may have changed since I completed it. But, I have heard that if you click to upload passport, then you must upload it, there is no option to go back. If it says you must upload your passport or has an Asterix next to it, then you will have to upload it.

    I saw a video that says in the US, you must check in through immigration customs first before you proceed to collect luggage and travel for your next destination or check into the next plane for your connecting flight. Is that true for all airports in the US?

      @AutopilotAviation  Před rokem

      Hello, yes that is true for all airports in the US. It isn't too bad. I have done it at Boston and was easier than I expected.
