Teacher fired for asking student to engage in critical thinking is ‘absolutely insane’

  • Sky News Digital Presenter Gabriella Power discusses the firing of a teacher who questioned a student's claim that author J.K. Rowling was a transphobe and bigot.
A teacher was fired after his video went viral on X, where he gently challenged a student’s stance on whether Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is a transphobe and bigot.
“It’s absolutely insane, isn’t it the point of education is to teach the next generation how to think critically,” Ms Power told Sky News host Rita Panahi.
“Hopefully, this teacher will receive a lot of support and go on to bigger and better things and will continue to educate people in some way.”
“He was so careful language when he was being asked about JK Rowling he was pointing out some pretty fair points.”

Yeah he broke the terms of employment--if for no other reason than penning a book on his work laptop, which of course is the school's property and went back to them when he was terminated. (He didn't even back up his work. 🤦‍♀️) So while he's great at philosophy and I love his method of speaking to his students and getting them to come up with their own answers, he lacks a lot of common sense and ingenuity. If I remember correctly, even in the beginning he was waiting for the ball to drop and said as much--which almost assuredly means he knew he was breaking at least one rule that his continued employment hinged on.

This video is kind of leading :/ None of us can know exactly what happened at the school, but it’s clear that the reason he was fired was never actually officially stated. A video of him talking about a controversial topic to a student got viral online, and he was fired afterwards. But correlation isn’t causation- is that not what we were taught about critical thinking in maths and science class. Maybe they fired him because the school didn’t want him to discuss politically charged, living people in the classroom. Maybe there was something else behind the scenes we don’t know about. Instead, this video is framed in a way to push viewers to do the opposite of critical thinking: make assumptions. Assume that he was fired for promoting “rationale, critical thought” and therefore was unfairly fired to incite outrage.
This video also automatically wants the viewers to assume J.K. Rowling is not a transphobe/TERF, much in the same way the teacher pointed out the student’s comment wants us to assume Rowling is one. This is supported by the commentator’s remarks that “those aren’t fair labels for her” without substantiating evidence. Can we really assume this without assessing THAT claim critically? While the student in the video did not have explanation why he thought Rowling was transphobic, it’s because he does not seem to know much about Radical Feminism. He lacked the necessary information and context to substantiate his claim, only repeating rhetoric seen online. The teacher, perhaps due to his own similar lack of knowledge on this topic, did not identify this as the main flaw in the student’s arguments.
But why the hypocrisy? We’re defending a teacher for supposedly doing a good job “promoting critical thinking”, particularly for pointing out the student made a loaded claim. And then this video conveniently proceeds to commit the exact same logical blunder, creating an argument based off of a loaded claim. They just say “she’s not a transphobe!” without acknowledging the actual evidence or well-informed arguments against her, and want us to run with that. To ultimately conclude “this firing was unfair.” After all, no school would actually fire a teacher doing a good job teaching critical thinking. So, this video seems to imply, it must be related to J.K. Rowling and how she is unfairly treated. What is the purpose behind this?

This shows how much the 'wokeness' and stupidity has corrupted American universities and colleges. After I had been laid off I went back to college. It was a technical college/university but we still had the required courses such as math, English composition, Literature etc. I had made a change in majors where one of my courses was 'Critical Thinking'. At the very last moment, we were told we'd have a different instructor teaching 'Humanities'. Talk about being dumbfounded and pissed. Since earning my degree it has become more well known and wide spread that other universities were abandoning 'Critical Thinking' as part of the normal college curriculum. Look at our society. We have a young generation that can't think for themselves or make important decisions. If we don't reverse this soon, it will be too late.

People need to learn how to think for themselves, as well as think outside the box and outside of social norms. Our 9th graders are reading at a 3rd grade level, our HS seniors don't know how to do basic algebra, and our college students can't name when the US was founded or name more than 3 presidents names. Heaven forbid you actually try to teach them anything, you might step on a slowflakes toe and get fired for it like he did.
These schools are all 'graded' by the government, and if they do bad on these 'grades' they get less funding each year. They are already paid next to nothing, and with that looming over their head, the administration will not allow you to simply flunk a student because they deserve to flunk, you have to pass them or you lose your job. Now everybody who should have been held back a year are now going to college and going into major debt for something they are unprepared for and unable to actually absorb any information out of. Our entire future is going to be in the hands of people who can't do any sort of critical thinking and just spew out whatever misinformation they read off their phone on twitter that day.

It's simple, he challenged an opinion and asked the person he was discussing with to logically work through how they got to the opinion, it's the most dangerous thing to teach in todays world, how to question your beliefs and form your own opinions based off of real events and evidence rather than regurgitating an opinion with zero knowledge of whether of not what they're saying is true, to educate a kid this much in the span of minutes is the scariest thing the machine has seen, the fact that this story is hitting the news is terrible news for the machine, it may actually make other people question their actions and beliefs and become more educated and possibly even willing to not speak on the behalf of something if they have not done the proper research to justify them having such a strong opinion on said thing.

No reference is made to the existence or non-existence of a statement from the school, it is not clear whether the newsroom sought clarification on this aspect from any source beyond the teacher in question. That the act of teaching his student to think critically is, in itself, the basis for Mr. Smith's termination is an assumption, not-on the basis of the information presented here-a proven fact.
